Do not automatically restore your backup. If you are erasing the iPhone because someone may have tampered with it and installed malicious software, Apple’s personal-safety guidance says a backup could reinstall the problem. Secure your accounts from a device and network you trust, review sharing access, erase the iPhone, and set it up as new unless Apple Support or a qualified security professional gives you case-specific recovery advice.

A suspicious symptom is not proof of malware. An unfamiliar app, unexpected account access, unwanted location sharing, physical access by another person, compromised credentials, and an Apple threat notification require different responses. The steps below separate ordinary phone migration from a suspected-tampering cleanup.

The decision that matters: migration or suspected tampering?

Apple supports restoring an iPhone from an iCloud backup or from a computer backup. That is appropriate when you are replacing a phone, recovering from accidental deletion, or setting up an erased device and you have no reason to believe the device or backup is compromised.

The rule changes when the reason for erasing is possible tampering and malicious software. Apple’s factory-reset guidance states:

“If you’re erasing all content and settings because you’re concerned your device was tampered with and had malicious software installed, don’t restore from a backup.”

Apple Support, personal safety guidance, October 2025 — Restore device to factory settings

The concern is not that every iPhone backup is infected. It is that a backup can contain or restore the software, configuration, or access that you are trying to remove, and Apple’s cited guidance does not certify any particular category of backed-up data as safe. If this warning describes your situation, treat a backup as untrusted and do not use “Restore from iCloud Backup” or a computer-backup restore during setup.

Use this quick classification

What prompted the reset? Appropriate direction
Routine upgrade, lost passcode, accidental deletion, or a normal replacement with no security concern Use Apple’s ordinary iCloud or computer restore procedure if you need the old setup.
Someone had physical access, an unfamiliar app or profile appeared, or you suspect malicious installation Secure accounts, review sharing, erase, and set up as new. Do not restore a backup.
Unexpected sharing, location access, or account changes with no evidence of malware Use Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access first; change access and credentials before deciding whether an erase is necessary.
An Apple threat notification about targeted spyware Verify it by signing in directly at account.apple.com, follow Apple’s notification-specific protections, and seek expert help.

Symptoms such as battery drain, pop-ups, overheating, or slow performance can have ordinary causes. They do not establish that malicious code is present. Avoid turning a guess into a diagnosis before choosing a destructive reset.

Before erasing: work from a trusted environment

If the iPhone may be compromised, perform account-protection steps on another device and network you trust, such as a fully updated personal computer on a known home network. Do not use a sign-in link supplied by a suspicious text, email, pop-up, or message. Open the service’s address yourself or use its official app.

Protect the Apple Account and other exposed accounts

  1. Sign in directly to your Apple Account and review the devices, phone numbers, and email addresses associated with it. Remove anything you do not recognize.
  2. Change the Apple Account password from the trusted device. Use a unique password that is not reused elsewhere.
  3. Check other accounts that may have been visible or accessible on the iPhone, including email, messaging, financial, work, and social accounts. Change passwords and revoke unfamiliar sessions according to each provider’s own controls.
  4. Confirm that two-factor authentication methods and recovery contacts still belong to you. If an attacker may control a phone number or email account, secure that account with its provider before relying on it for recovery.
  5. Record essential information you will need after the erase, such as your Apple Account address, recovery details, and the names of genuinely needed apps. Do not copy unknown configuration profiles or apps merely to preserve them.

Changing a password on the iPhone itself may be unsafe if you believe someone is actively controlling it. The trusted-device approach also prevents a malicious link on the suspected phone from capturing a new password.

Review sharing before a factory reset

Apple specifically recommends Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access before erasing in the suspected-tampering scenario. It can help identify people, apps, and services that have access to information. Safety Check is an access-review tool, not a forensic malware detector; a clean-looking review does not prove that the iPhone is free of malicious software.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the iPhone, open Settings and search for Safety Check, then choose Manage Sharing & Access. The exact screens can vary with the iOS version. Review each person and app, stop sharing you do not intend to continue, and inspect account and device access. If immediate personal safety is at risk, Safety Check also offers an emergency reset option; read its warnings carefully because it can change sharing and account access at once.

Preserve only what you can assess

An iCloud or computer backup is a copy of the phone’s state, not a certificate that the copy is clean. If you need records for an investigation, preserve them separately and deliberately: for example, save specific documents, photographs, or messages whose source you understand to a trusted storage location. Do not make a full backup solely so you can restore it later when Apple’s no-backup warning applies. If evidence of stalking, workplace intrusion, extortion, or targeted surveillance may be needed, consult a qualified security professional before wiping the device; an erase can destroy useful evidence.

Update iOS at the right point

Apple calls keeping software up to date “the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” See Apple’s iOS security-update guidance (published April 2, 2026). Use the current on-device update flow because supported versions and menu labels change.

If you can safely operate the phone, open Settings > General > Software Update and install the offered update. If you are about to erase because of suspected tampering, do not delay the reset while experimenting with cleaners or “malware removal” apps. After the erase, update iOS during setup or immediately after reaching the Home Screen, before installing other apps. Download updates only through Apple’s normal Settings or setup process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Erase the iPhone when suspected tampering is the reason

Apple’s factory-reset instructions describe erasing all content and settings. The operation removes the local data, installed apps, settings, and accounts from the iPhone. Make sure you know the Apple Account credentials and have a way to complete activation and two-factor authentication.

  1. From a trusted place, finish the account and sharing review described above.
  2. On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
  3. Tap Erase All Content and Settings, read the warnings, and continue.
  4. Enter the iPhone passcode and, if requested, the Apple Account password to turn off Activation Lock and complete the erase.
  5. Keep the iPhone connected to power and connected to a trusted Wi-Fi network while it completes the process. Do not interrupt it because the screen appears unchanged for a while.

For Apple’s full, version-aware instructions and the effects of the reset, see Restore device to factory settings. If you cannot complete the erase, do not repeatedly guess credentials; contact Apple Support or a qualified professional, especially when an account or Activation Lock is involved.

Set up the erased iPhone without importing the old state

When the Hello screen returns, choose the option to set up the iPhone without restoring an iCloud or computer backup. The wording can change by iOS release, but avoid any choice labeled Restore from iCloud Backup, Restore from Mac or PC, or equivalent migration from the old device.

  1. Install the latest iOS update offered during setup, if one is available.
  2. Connect the iPhone to a trusted Wi-Fi network and sign in to the secured Apple Account only after you are satisfied that its password and recovery methods are under your control.
  3. Enable only the iCloud services you understand and need. Syncing an individual service is different from restoring the entire device backup, but do not enable data or accounts you cannot assess.
  4. Install apps manually from the App Store, one at a time. Use the developer name, install history, and the app’s purpose to decide whether each one belongs on the clean device.
  5. Recreate essential settings manually, including passcode, Face ID or Touch ID, notification permissions, and privacy permissions. Grant location, microphone, camera, contacts, and Bluetooth access only when the app’s function requires it.
  6. Turn on automatic iOS updates and review Apple Account device access again after setup.

Do not restore a configuration profile, device-management profile, unknown certificate, or copied app package simply because it was present before. If a school or employer manages the iPhone, obtain the profile from that organization’s verified administrator rather than copying it from the old phone.

Recover data selectively instead of restoring a full backup

After a clean setup, bring back information in a way that lets you evaluate its source. The safest choice depends on what you need and why you distrust the old phone.

Photos, videos, and documents

Retrieve individual files from a trusted cloud service or a computer copy whose provenance you understand. Open them with current, updated apps and avoid installing a viewer or converter supplied by an unknown sender. If a file itself is suspicious, preserve it for professional analysis rather than opening it repeatedly on the clean phone.

Contacts and calendars

Sync only the account that owns the data, after changing that account’s password and checking its active sessions. Review contacts, calendar subscriptions, and shared calendars for entries you did not create. Remove unwanted subscriptions at the account level so they do not return.

Messages and app data

Many apps keep their own server-side history and require a fresh sign-in. Reinstall the app from the App Store, update it, and restore only the service data you recognize. Do not import an app’s entire local data directory from the old phone when you cannot verify its origin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Passwords and passkeys

Use the password manager or account provider’s supported recovery process. Review saved credentials before syncing them to the new setup, and rotate any credential that may have been exposed. A password export from an untrusted phone should not be treated as clean merely because it is encrypted.

Ordinary Apple restore methods—and their boundary here

For a normal migration with no suspected tampering, Apple documents two supported routes. These instructions explain what the standard process is; they do not override Apple’s warning to avoid a backup when malicious installation is the reason for erasing.

Restore route How it normally works What you need Why it is different in this scenario
iCloud backup during setup During iPhone setup, choose the iCloud-backup restore option, sign in, select a backup, and leave the phone on Wi-Fi and power while content downloads. Apple Account access, an available iCloud backup, and reliable Wi-Fi. Do not select this route when the erase is intended to remove suspected tampering or malicious software.
Computer backup over USB Connect the iPhone to a Mac or PC, use Apple’s supported device-management or backup software, and choose the option to restore a stored backup. A trusted computer, the backup, and a compatible USB data cable. Connector compatibility depends on the iPhone and computer models. A computer backup is still a backup; using a cable does not make it safe from the concern Apple describes.

Apple’s current general instructions are at Restore all content to iPhone from a backup. That page covers ordinary restoration, while the personal-safety page controls the decision when you suspect tampering.

You do not need a cable for an iCloud workflow. A cable is not a malware-removal tool, and no Apple source cited here establishes that a consumer “cleaner,” antivirus utility, or third-party scanning app will detect or remove an iPhone infection.

When an Apple threat notification appears

Apple threat notifications concern a small number of people whom Apple believes may have been individually targeted by highly sophisticated attacks, including mercenary spyware. Treat a notification seriously, but verify it safely: sign in directly at account.apple.com, not through a link in an email or text. Follow the specific protective steps in Apple’s notification guidance and consider expert assistance, including Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline.

Read Apple’s current explanation at About Apple threat notifications and protecting against mercenary spyware (August 13, 2026). A notification is not the same as a generic pop-up or an app’s claim that your phone is infected. Do not forward the alert to an unknown “support” address or pay anyone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Lockdown Mode: a targeted-attack measure, not routine cleanup

Lockdown Mode is optional, extreme protection for the very small number of people who may be personally targeted by highly sophisticated attacks. It restricts features and can affect websites, messages, FaceTime, accessories, and other functionality. It is not a general malware scanner and is not necessary for every suspected infection.

If your circumstances fit that threat model, read Apple’s explanation and the restrictions before enabling it: Harden your devices with Lockdown Mode. You can find the setting through Settings > Privacy & Security > Lockdown Mode; the exact location may change with iOS updates. A threat-notification recipient should follow Apple’s case-specific advice and obtain expert help rather than relying on Lockdown Mode alone.

Troubleshooting after the reset

The old symptoms return immediately

Stop reinstalling apps and disconnect accounts that were just added. From another trusted device, change the relevant account password and revoke sessions. Note which step preceded the symptom; that information is more useful than repeatedly erasing the phone. Contact Apple Support or a qualified security professional if the behavior persists on a current, freshly erased system with no third-party apps.

You cannot activate or update the iPhone

Check the trusted Wi-Fi connection, power, Apple Account credentials, and Apple’s system status. Do not use unofficial activation tools. If Activation Lock belongs to another person or organization, only the legitimate account owner or administrator can resolve it.

You need a file that was not copied

Do not respond by restoring the entire backup if Apple’s suspected-tampering warning applies. Retrieve the specific file from its original, trusted service or ask a professional to assess an offline copy. Keep the clean phone isolated from unknown files until you know what they contain.

You suspect stalking or immediate physical danger

Use a safer device to contact a trusted person or local support service. Changing settings can alert an abuser, and an erase can destroy evidence. Safety planning and specialist advice take priority over completing a technical reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Final checklist

  • Classify the concern: ordinary migration, access or sharing problem, suspected tampering, or Apple threat notification.
  • Use a trusted device and network; never sign in through a suspicious link.
  • Secure the Apple Account and other exposed accounts, including recovery methods and active sessions.
  • Run Safety Check’s Manage Sharing & Access before erasing when sharing or access may explain the concern.
  • Update iOS through Apple’s supported flow.
  • If suspected tampering or malicious installation is the reason for erasing, use Erase All Content and Settings and set up as new.
  • Do not restore an iCloud or computer backup in that case.
  • Install apps manually and recover only data whose source you can assess.
  • Verify Apple threat notifications directly at account.apple.com and seek expert help when targeted spyware is possible.
  • Use Lockdown Mode only when its restrictive, targeted-attack protection fits your situation.
