Make a second copy of your Elden Ring save before entering Shadow of the Erdtree, and verify which copy is newer before restoring anything. On PS5, the supported method is PlayStation cloud storage: upload the matching PS5 or PS4 save, then download that selected copy back to console storage if you need to roll back. On Steam, Steam Cloud synchronizes files rather than keeping a guaranteed history; a conflict can overwrite the copy you do not choose. Xbox supports Elden Ring, but an authoritative, current menu-by-menu backup and restore procedure is not established here, so do not rely on unverified manual-export instructions.
Shadow of the Erdtree requires the base game and a qualifying character. Before you launch it, confirm that you have defeated Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood, and that your save reaches the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace. Then back up the exact game-version save you intend to use.
Confirm your Shadow of the Erdtree starting point first
The expansion is not a separate starting game. The official Elden Ring product information states that the base game must be progressed before the downloadable content can be started. The access notice published on June 20, 2024 identifies two required victories: Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood. After both bosses are defeated, the route into the Land of Shadow begins at the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace.
That requirement matters for backup planning. A cloud copy made from an earlier character is still a valid backup, but it will not let that character enter the expansion until the progression conditions are met. Make the backup after the boss victories if your goal is to preserve a ready-to-enter state.

Check the platform and game version
The official game site lists PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Steam. Shadow of the Erdtree released on June 21, 2024. Save handling differs by platform, and on PlayStation it also differs by the PS4 and PS5 editions of Elden Ring. Identify the edition you actually launch before uploading or downloading anything.
Choose the right kind of backup
A backup and a synchronization service are not identical. A separate copy gives you something to preserve while you continue playing. Synchronization tries to make two locations match, which can replace an older state. The distinction is especially important when a game reports a cloud conflict.

Back up and restore an Elden Ring save on PS5
Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current support instructions use the same high-level path for both editions: Settings, then Saved Data and Game/App Settings. The menu labels below are those shown on the cited US support page; wording can vary with system software and region.
1. Identify whether you are using the PS5 or PS4 edition
- Close Elden Ring so that no active session is writing progress.
- On the PS5 home screen, highlight the edition you normally launch. Confirm whether it is labeled as the PS5 version or the PS4 version.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Choose Saved Data (PS5) for the PS5 edition, or Saved Data (PS4) for the PS4 edition.
Do not upload a PS5 save while intending to restore the PS4 edition, or the reverse. PlayStation treats those save sets as separate categories.

2. Upload the intended save to cloud storage
- From the matching saved-data category, select the option for uploading or copying saved data to cloud storage.
- Select the Elden Ring save you want to preserve. If several entries are listed, use the displayed date and time and the character state you recognize to identify the correct one.
- Start the upload and wait for the console to report completion.
- Check the cloud-sync status before leaving the menu. The desired copy must be in cloud storage; a save that exists only on the console is not protected by this step.
PlayStation cloud storage requires an active PlayStation Plus membership. PlayStation describes that storage as network space used to copy saved data. Automatic synchronization can simplify routine updates on PS5, but it does not turn the cloud into an unlimited historical archive. If a newer save synchronizes over an older one, the older state may no longer be available through the normal cloud copy.
3. Start the expansion only after verifying the copy
Return to Elden Ring and confirm that the character you backed up is the one you will use. If you have more than one character, note the character’s level, location or recent achievement so you can recognize it during a later restore. Starting the expansion does not itself create a rollback point; the upload you completed is the rollback point.
4. Restore the PS5 or PS4 save from the cloud
- Close Elden Ring.
- Open Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
- Enter Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4), matching the edition you will launch.
- Choose the cloud-storage action labeled Download or Delete from Cloud Storage.
- Select the intended Elden Ring save and choose Download to copy it to console storage.
- Before accepting any overwrite prompt, compare the cloud timestamp with the console copy. The cloud copy should be the state you deliberately preserved.
- Launch the same game edition and verify the character before continuing.
The phrase “Download or Delete from Cloud Storage” is a menu label, not an instruction to delete the backup. Choose download when restoring. Deletion is a separate destructive action and should be used only when you intentionally want to remove a cloud entry.

Moving a PS4 Elden Ring save to the PS5 version
The official Elden Ring product page says PS4 save data can transfer to the PS5 version. Treat that transfer as a one-way version-conversion step, not as a version-agnostic backup. The PS4 and PS5 versions cannot be played concurrently with one shared save. Keep the original PS4 cloud entry until you have opened the transferred save in the PS5 edition, confirmed the character and progress, and decided that the conversion is complete.

If you continue to play the PS4 edition after transferring, its later progress will not automatically become the same save as the PS5 edition. Manage the two saved-data categories separately and always check the edition before downloading.
Handle Steam Cloud safely on PC
Steam Cloud is convenient for keeping a local installation and Steam’s cloud copy synchronized, but it is not a guaranteed version-history system. Valve’s Steam Cloud FAQ and the Elden Ring notice about PC save-data conflicts both warn that local and cloud files can diverge.
What a cloud conflict means
A conflict means Steam sees different local and cloud versions. The dialog displays last-modified times so you can compare them. The Elden Ring notice warns that the save data you do not keep will be overwritten. Selecting a version is therefore a destructive decision when both copies contain progress you may need.

- Do not dismiss the conflict merely to get back into the game.
- Read the local and cloud timestamps shown by Steam. A later timestamp is not automatically the right choice: check which session contains the character progress you want.
- If both copies might matter, stop before choosing either option and make an independent copy using a local-file procedure you have verified for your current installation. The official sources used for this guide do not establish a current Windows save path or exact file-copy and restore commands, so do not rely on a guessed path.
- After protecting any copy you need, select the local or cloud version that should become the active save.
- Allow Steam to complete synchronization before launching Elden Ring. Reopen the game and verify the character, rune total, equipment and location.
Steam Support states that it cannot recover lost saves or resolve Steam Cloud conflicts. That is why the separate-copy step belongs before the choice, not after an unwanted overwrite.

When Steam shows no conflict
No warning does not prove that an older historical version is available. Steam may simply synchronize the newest file it recognizes. If you need a pre-expansion rollback point, preserve an independent local copy through a verified procedure before playing. Because the authoritative sources here do not specify the current Windows path, the safest instruction is to confirm the path in up-to-date Steam or game documentation rather than copying a location from an old forum post.
What Xbox players should and should not assume
The official Elden Ring site confirms Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S support. The available official material does not, however, provide a current, platform-specific sequence for exporting, uploading, downloading or restoring an Elden Ring save on Xbox.
- Do not present a community file-management method as an official Xbox backup.
- Do not assume that an Xbox One save and an Xbox Series save can be manually exchanged without checking the current Xbox guidance for your console and game edition.
- Before beginning the expansion, use the console’s current official saved-data or cloud-management instructions and verify that synchronization has completed.
- If a sync or save error appears, stop launching the game repeatedly and follow Microsoft’s current recovery guidance for that exact message.
This limitation is preferable to inventing menu names that may be wrong for the console generation, region or system software.

When the game opens with the wrong progress
Exit without making additional progress. On PS5, return to the matching PS5 or PS4 saved-data menu and compare the console and cloud timestamps. On Steam, look for a local/cloud conflict and compare the displayed times before selecting a copy. On Xbox, consult the current official recovery instructions because a verified manual restore sequence is not established here.

When the cloud copy is newer than expected
A newer timestamp may represent an unwanted session, not the intended backup. Do not download it simply because it is newer. First identify the character state you want. On Steam, protect both versions before resolving the conflict if both could be useful. On PS5, avoid overwriting the console copy until you have confirmed that the cloud entry is the deliberate backup.
When you selected the wrong copy
Stop playing immediately. Further play can create another synchronization event and make the unwanted state harder to separate. If you made an independent copy before the selection, use that copy through the platform’s supported restore process. If you did not, recovery may not be possible: Steam explicitly says its support team cannot recover lost saves or resolve cloud conflicts, and cloud services generally should not be treated as archival history.
When the save does not appear
Check the edition first. On PS5, a PS4 save appears under Saved Data (PS4), while a PS5 save appears under Saved Data (PS5). Also check that you are using the same console account and the same game edition that created the save. Do not delete entries while troubleshooting an absent save.

- The base Elden Ring game is installed and updated on the platform you will use.
- Your character has defeated Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood.
- You can reach the Cocoon of the Empyrean Site of Grace.
- You identified the exact edition: PS5, PS4, Steam or Xbox.
- On PS5, you selected the matching Saved Data (PS5) or Saved Data (PS4) category.
- Your PlayStation Plus cloud upload completed, or your Steam independent copy was made through a verified current procedure.
- You recorded enough character details to recognize the intended state after restoration.
- You checked timestamps before accepting any overwrite or conflict decision.

The PlayStation steps reflect Sony Interactive Entertainment’s current “PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 consoles” support page, accessed October 13, 2026. Steam behavior reflects Valve’s current Steam Cloud FAQ and Bandai Namco Entertainment and FromSoftware’s March 4, 2022 PC Steam Cloud save-data notice. The notice documents the overwrite risk; it should not be read as proof that an identical incident remains active today.
