The safest V Rising backup is a copy of the complete world folder made after a clean server shutdown, stored outside the live installation. For a dedicated server launched with -persistentDataPath .save-data, the world normally lives in save-dataSavesv4<save-name>. Restore that entire folder under the target server’s Savesv4 directory, set -saveName to the folder name, restore the matching settings, and test the world before deleting your pre-restore copy.
What you need to back up
A V Rising server’s state is more than one file. The world/session directory contains player progression, buildings, inventories, characters, and autosave data. The persistent Settings directory contains the server’s host and gameplay configuration. A reliable recovery set therefore includes both the complete world folder and the settings used to run it.
- World data: the entire session folder beneath
Savesv4, including all autosave files. - Persistent configuration:
ServerHostSettings.json,ServerGameSettings.json, and any administration files in the persistentSettingsdirectory. - Launch identity: the persistent-data location and the
-saveNamevalue used by the server, so the copy can be placed and selected correctly.
Keep the original live files until the restored copy has been opened successfully and players have confirmed their expected progression. A backup that is overwritten during an unsuccessful restore is not a recovery point.
Where V Rising stores saves
Dedicated-server layout
The location is controlled by the server’s -persistentDataPath launch parameter. A common launcher example is:

Current references use the versioned path save-dataSavesv4<save-name>. The v4 segment is version-sensitive, so check the folder name used by your current server build before scripting a backup or restore.

The dependable way to identify one is to open V Rising’s Load Game menu, select the world, and choose Go to Directory. That opens the exact folder the game associates with the selected session.
Cloud-backed client saves
With Cloud Saves enabled, sessions are normally under:

Back up a dedicated V Rising server safely
1. Stop the server cleanly
Issue the normal shutdown command or stop the service through the process manager that launched it. Wait for the process to exit before copying anything. A clean stop lets the server flush the latest state; copying while it is writing can produce a partial or internally inconsistent session.

Inspect the launcher, service definition, shortcut, or startup script for -persistentDataPath. Do not assume the installation directory is the save location. If the parameter is ., resolve it relative to the server process’s working directory and then verify that the expected Settings and Saves folders are present.

3. Copy the complete world folder
Open the persistent-data path, then Savesv4. Copy the selected world’s entire directory to storage outside the live server directory. Include every file in the folder, especially autosave files. Copying only one autosave is appropriate only when you have deliberately designed a recovery-point policy around that file; it is not the normal full backup.
4. Copy persistent settings
Copy the complete persistent Settings directory as a companion to the world backup. Preserve ServerHostSettings.json, ServerGameSettings.json, and any server administration files used by your deployment. Keeping customized settings in persistent data protects them from installation updates that may replace defaults in the installation folder.
5. Label and retain the backup
Store the copy outside the live server tree, using a label that identifies the world and the backup time in UTC, such as castle-world-2026-10-15T23-00Z. Keep at least one older recovery point when disk space permits. A newest-only policy cannot recover from corruption that was already present when the latest copy was made.
6. Record what the copy contains
Alongside the files, record the server build, the persistent-data path, the -saveName value, and whether the source was a dedicated or client-hosted session. This small inventory prevents a later restore from using the right files with the wrong launch identity or settings.
Restore a V Rising dedicated-server save
1. Stop the target server
Shut down the target instance cleanly and verify that its process has ended. Never merge files into a running world. The server can overwrite a restored folder with its in-memory state or leave a mixture of old and new files.
2. Make a safety copy of the target
Before changing anything, copy the target’s current Saves and Settings directories to a separate location. Name this copy with the restore date. It is your rollback if the selected backup is older than expected or if the restored configuration prevents the server from starting.
3. Place the world under the target persistent path
Copy the backed-up world directory into the target’s persistent-data Savesv4 directory. Preserve the folder’s contents and do not add an extra nesting level. The final structure should be equivalent to:

<persistent-data>Savesv4world1<world files>4. Match -saveName
If the launcher selects a named save, make the restored folder name exactly match the value passed to -saveName. For example, a folder named world1 requires a launch setting of -saveName world1. A mismatch can make the server create or open a different session instead of the restored one.
5. Restore the matching settings
Restore the companion persistent Settings directory, or copy its intended files into the target directory. Check ServerHostSettings.json for the expected server name and save selection. Check ServerGameSettings.json for gameplay rules such as the settings your players expect. If the destination intentionally uses a different name or rule set, edit those values deliberately rather than restoring them blindly.
6. Check save-local JSON overrides
Look inside the restored world folder for JSON settings files. Settings stored inside a save can take precedence over the base persistent Settings directory. If the server appears to ignore a restored value from ServerGameSettings.json, compare the save-local files and remove or reconcile an override that conflicts with the configuration you intend to use.
7. Start and validate before cleanup
Start the server and confirm all of the following:
- The expected world name and map load.
- At least one known player can connect.
- Player progression, inventories, castles, and other important structures are present.
- The server name and access settings are correct.
- Gameplay rules match the restored configuration.
- A new save or autosave completes without errors.
Keep the pre-restore safety copy until players have connected and the state is confirmed. Only then should you retire older files according to your retention policy.

1. Locate the exact client session
Back up the session before moving it. In V Rising, open Load Game, select the world, and choose Go to Directory. This method works whether the session is in the local Savesv4 path or the account-specific CloudSaves<SteamID>v4 path.
2. Copy the full session directory
Copy the complete selected folder, not just a visible save or autosave file. Keep the original client folder untouched until the dedicated server has loaded and been tested. The generated client directory name is not required on the dedicated server; you can rename the copied folder to a simple name such as survival01.
3. Install it under the dedicated server’s save path
Place the renamed folder in the dedicated server’s persistent-data Savesv4 directory. Set the launcher’s -saveName to the new folder name:

-saveName survival01Use the target server’s own -persistentDataPath; placing the files in the installation directory while the launcher points elsewhere will not transfer the world.
4. Reconcile per-save configuration
Inspect the copied session for ServerHostSettings.json or other per-save settings. A client-hosted world can carry settings that conflict with the dedicated server’s host name, save selection, or gameplay rules. Remove or edit those files only after comparing them with the dedicated server’s persistent settings and the precedence rules described above.
5. Validate the dedicated instance
Start the server, connect with an affected player account, and check progression and world objects. Confirm that the server advertises the intended name and that gameplay rules are correct. Keep the original client session and the pre-migration copy until this test is complete.
Cloud Save synchronization hazards
Cloud Saves can resynchronize files changed outside the game. If you delete or replace a cloud-backed session in Explorer while the game is closed, the next launch may restore the cloud copy and undo your change. For cloud-backed worlds, use V Rising’s own save-management interface when deleting or replacing sessions, and maintain an external backup before making changes.
This matters during migration as well as ordinary recovery. First create the external copy, then use the game interface to identify and manage the session. Do not treat the local CloudSaves directory as an independent archive unless you have verified that synchronization is disabled or controlled.

AutoSaveCount and rollback depth
AutoSaveCount controls how many autosave files the server retains. Increasing it creates more short-term rollback points but consumes additional disk space. Autosaves complement, rather than replace, periodic full-folder backups: they remain inside the live world directory and can all be affected by the same corruption or mistaken configuration change.
Back up before updates
Stunlock Studios’ official instructions say: “It is highly recommended to backup the save files often and before patching or before starting the server after having patched.” Make a full backup before applying a game or server patch, and make another backup before first startup after the patch. A corrupted state or a persistence-format change can make the previous copy essential.

Do not assume every build uses the same folder version
The current references use v4, but the versioned directory is tied to the save format. Verify the folder name against the server build you are running before publishing automation or copying a path from an older guide. If a patch introduces a new version directory, do not rename it by guesswork; let the current server documentation and generated folder structure determine the correct location.

Choosing a backup approach

For a server you operate yourself, combine frequent full-folder copies with a sensible AutoSaveCount. Managed hosting can simplify uptime and file access, but it does not remove the need for an independent backup that you control.
Troubleshooting restore failures
The server starts a new world
Check the final path and the launch arguments. The folder must be directly below the target persistent-data path’s Savesv4 directory, and -saveName must exactly match the folder name. Also confirm that the launcher’s -persistentDataPath points to the directory you copied, not to another working directory.
The world loads with old settings
Inspect JSON files inside the save folder. A save-local override may take precedence over ServerGameSettings.json or other files in persistent Settings. Reconcile the conflicting value, restart the server, and test again. Do not change several unrelated settings at once; isolating the override makes the result easier to verify.
Players or structures are missing
Stop the server and compare the restored folder with the backup source. Missing progression usually indicates that only one autosave or an incomplete directory was copied, or that the server opened a different save. Restore the complete source folder again, verify -saveName, and keep the target safety copy until the correct state is confirmed.

A cloud-backed session reappears after deletion
Cloud synchronization may have restored it. Use the in-game save-management controls instead of deleting files only in Explorer, and preserve an external copy before trying again. Confirm which session the Load Game menu opens through Go to Directory.
The restored folder is not recognized after a patch
Check whether the current build uses the same versioned directory, such as v4. Compare the server’s newly created save structure with the backup and consult the current version’s instructions before moving files. Keep the original backup unchanged while determining whether the issue is a path-version mismatch or a format incompatibility.
A practical retention routine
- Keep the server’s normal autosaves enabled and set
AutoSaveCounthigh enough for the rollback window your disk can support. - Make a dated full-folder backup after a clean shutdown at a regular interval appropriate to how often the world changes.
- Create an extra full backup immediately before every patch and before the first post-patch startup.
- Copy persistent
Settingswith each world snapshot, even when the settings have not changed. - Store at least one recovery point outside the live server machine or directory.
- Periodically test a copy on a separate location so you know the folder, save name, and settings are usable before an emergency.
This routine separates quick rollback from disaster recovery: autosaves handle recent mistakes, while dated full copies protect against corruption, failed updates, and configuration loss.
