If you suspect your Samsung Galaxy phone has been compromised, secure important accounts from a trusted device first. Then identify the files you cannot replace, make and verify a backup using a route supported for your phone, and reset only if needed. Restore selectively: Samsung documents ways to back up and restore Galaxy data, but does not certify a restored backup as complete or malware-free.
Pop-ups, battery drain, or unusual behavior alone do not prove that a phone has been hacked. Treat them as reasons to investigate and protect your accounts—not as proof that every file or app is unsafe.
Secure your accounts before using the phone for recovery
If you believe the phone may be compromised, use a different trusted device for sensitive account changes. Start with the email account used to recover other accounts, then secure other important accounts and review their active sessions and recovery options where available. If you see signs of financial or mobile-number account abuse, contact your bank or carrier.

These are general incident-response steps, not a Samsung recovery procedure. Do not enter new passwords or recovery codes on a phone you do not trust.

Decide what you need to preserve
Make a short list before choosing a backup route. Include irreplaceable photos and videos, documents, contacts, messages, and any authenticator, recovery, or other information that may exist only on the phone. Do not assume that every app’s private data or setting can be copied and restored.
Samsung France notes that information stored only on a phone that is lost or stolen cannot be restored; its guidance is specific to France. The practical lesson is to confirm that essential information exists somewhere you can access before erasing the device.

Choose and verify a backup route
Samsung support describes Smart Switch and account-based backups as options. What is available, which data categories are included, and the menu names depend on your Galaxy model, software, region, and account setup. Use the instructions for your specific model and confirm the copy is present at its destination before resetting.

Smart Switch is not a perfect image of the phone: Samsung’s listed categories and transfer limitations mean some settings or app data may be absent. A backup is useful preparation, not proof that every item is preserved or that restored content is safe.

Reset only after backup and only if needed
Samsung Canada describes factory reset as a last resort after trying other measures. Its settings route is Settings > General management > Reset > Factory data reset. The phone may ask for its screen-lock credentials and Samsung account password. Menus can differ by carrier and software version.
A factory data reset erases personal files, downloaded apps, and settings. Do not begin until you have confirmed the essential backup and can sign in to the accounts needed to set up the phone again. Samsung UK says most Android devices use Google Factory Reset Protection; for a phone you are giving away, its UK guidance advises removing the Google account before resetting. If you are keeping the phone, have the relevant Google and Samsung credentials available. Reset prompts and protections can vary by device and region.

Restore selectively and secure the phone
- Set up the reset phone. Sign in with the account that holds the backup, or connect the phone to the computer or storage used for Smart Switch, following Samsung’s instructions for your model.
- Restore what you need. Choose essential data rather than assuming a full transfer is the safest choice. Samsung documents restore capability, but does not guarantee that backed-up app data or settings are safe after a security incident.
- Reinstall apps from official stores. Samsung Canada advises downloading apps exclusively from Galaxy Store or Google Play and avoiding suspicious links in apps, texts, and email. Enable Auto Blocker if it is available on your device.
- Update and review. Install available phone and app updates, then check app permissions and account sessions. Avoid restoring an app or setting you do not recognize or need.
If suspicious behavior continues after a reset and clean setup, Samsung Canada recommends contacting Samsung support, visiting a service center, or scheduling a repair.
