Back up your OnePlus phone before installing an update, but do not assume that a backup stored on the phone is safe. A local archive can be deleted by a factory reset or any operation that erases user data. The safest workflow is to create the built-in backup, copy its Backup folder to a computer or other compatible external storage, check separately saved photos and app data, and only then run the update.
OnePlus Support explicitly recommends backing up before updating. The menu names differ between OxygenOS releases and models, so use the path that matches your software rather than treating one route as universal.
What to check before creating a backup
Have the phone, its unlock method, a suitable data cable, and enough free space on the destination computer or storage. Keep the phone connected to power while preparing the archive. Also note the exact OxygenOS and Android version, because OnePlus manuals for OxygenOS 14, Android 12, and OxygenOS 12 use different labels.
Find your software version and update menu
On current OnePlus support instructions, software updates are reached through Settings > System & update > Software Update or System Update, depending on the label shown on the device. OnePlus’s OxygenOS 12 note directs users to Settings > About device to view update information. Do not force a path that is absent: use the closest equivalent wording on your phone and confirm the model’s own manual if a menu has moved.

Plan for data that a phone archive may not contain
A local backup is not necessarily a complete image of the phone. The Android 12 guide lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps excluding app data. Photos, videos, downloads, documents, authenticator databases, and files held inside individual apps need their own checks. Make a short inventory before proceeding so that a successful local backup does not create a false sense of completeness.
Compare the available backup routes
Use more than one route when the information is important. The table shows what the cited OnePlus documentation establishes and where each method stops.

When choosing, compare four things: the data categories selected, whether the copy is outside the phone, what setup is needed to restore it, and whether the method exists on your model and software version.

Create a local backup on the phone
OxygenOS 14 path
- Open Settings.
- Tap Additional settings.
- Open Back up & migrate.
- Choose Local backup.
- Tap New backup and follow the prompts to select the available categories.
The OxygenOS 14 manual describes local backup as suitable for a small volume of data. Wait for the completion message before leaving the screen, and note the time or name of the archive so you can identify it during restoration.
Android 12 path
- Open Settings.
- Tap System settings.
- Choose Back up & migrate, then Local backup.
- Select the categories offered on your phone and start the backup.
The Android 12 guide says the resulting files are stored in the phone’s storage/Backup folder. The exact folder display may appear as Internal shared storage/Backup in a file manager or when the phone is connected to a computer.
Check the selection instead of accepting every default
Read the category list before confirming. In the Android 12 documentation, the local choices are contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps without app data. That means an app can be listed while its accounts, downloaded content, game progress, or other private database remains outside the archive. Treat each app’s own export or cloud-sync function as a separate responsibility.

Copy the local archive off the phone
OnePlus warns that local-backup data is cleared when you wipe data, erase all data, or restore factory settings. Therefore, a local archive is an intermediate step, not the final safe copy.
Copy to a Windows, macOS, or other computer
- Unlock the OnePlus phone and connect it with a cable that supports data, not only charging.
- When the USB notification appears, select Transfer files.
- Open the phone’s internal shared storage on the computer.
- Locate the
Backupfolder and copy it to a clearly named folder on the computer. - Wait for the transfer to finish, then open the destination and confirm that the folder contains files and has a plausible size before disconnecting.
Keep the computer copy until you have completed the update and, if necessary, restored the data. If you prefer removable storage, OnePlus community guidance mentions a USB flash drive, but the phone’s port, adapter requirements, file-system support, and available power differ by model. A computer is the documented option and does not require buying a drive.
If the computer does not show the phone
- Unlock the screen and reconnect the cable.
- Change the USB mode to Transfer files rather than charging.
- Try another data cable or USB port.
- Check that the computer has enough free space for the entire
Backupfolder. - Do not delete the phone copy until the off-device copy opens and the transfer has completed.
Use Google-account backup as an additional layer
The OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 manual documents account synchronization and restoration after a factory reset or a move to another device. On a phone that presents those controls, sign in to the intended account, enable the synchronization items you need, and allow the process to complete. OnePlus recommends Wi-Fi for large backups in that manual.
This route is not a guarantee that every category on every OnePlus is covered. The cited instructions are tied to the OnePlus 10 Pro’s OxygenOS 12 documentation, so verify the categories and status indicators shown on your own phone. Keep the off-device local archive even when account backup is enabled.
Consider Clone Phone for migration or a documented cloud copy
OnePlus’s Ireland migration guide describes Clone Phone backup and restore and includes a cloud-backup and cloud-restore path. This can be useful when the update is combined with a move to another handset or when the app is the method available on your model.

Run the software update without interrupting it
- Return to the update screen through Settings > System & update > Software Update/System Update, or the equivalent location shown for your version.
- Connect the phone to power, or make sure the battery is above 60 percent as OnePlus advises.
- Use a stable Wi-Fi or mobile-data connection. A stable network is especially important when the package still has to download.
- Start the update and leave the phone alone while it installs. Do not operate it, disconnect power unnecessarily, or power it off during the process.
- Allow the phone to reboot and finish its post-update setup before judging whether data is missing.
OnePlus says rollout timing varies by country or region, so the absence of an update on a particular day is not evidence that the backup failed. The official guidance does not promise a universal download or installation duration; package size, network speed, model, and update stage all affect elapsed time.
Restore a local backup after the update
OxygenOS 14 restoration
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Select the backup time you created before the update.
- Tap Start and follow the prompts.
Android 12 restoration
The Android 12 guide similarly directs you to Local backup, select a time point, and start restoration. The wording and location can follow the Android 12 path under Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate.
If you moved the archive to a computer or external device, make the Backup folder available on the phone’s internal storage before opening Local backup so the restore screen can detect it. Keep the original off-device copy untouched until you have checked the restored information.

Restoration should be judged against the categories you selected, not against a perfect clone of the old phone. The Android 12 documentation excludes app data from its listed app backup, and neither cited local guide promises that every photo, document, download, or app-specific database will return automatically.

Google-account restoration
The OnePlus 10 Pro OxygenOS 12 instructions describe restoring after a factory reset or device change by signing in to the account and enabling synchronization. Complete the initial setup, use the same account that held the backup, and allow Wi-Fi synchronization to finish. The available categories depend on the account, Android version, and device setup.
Clone Phone restoration
Use Clone Phone’s restore function on the destination phone and select the local or cloud backup presented by the app. Follow its pairing or sign-in instructions and leave both devices connected until the transfer completes. Because the guide is regional and migration-oriented, treat the app’s current on-screen list as the authority for what can be restored on your model.

Troubleshoot the common failure points
The backup menu is missing
Search Settings for Back up, Migrate, or Local backup. OxygenOS 14 uses Additional settings, while the Android 12 guide uses System settings. A different model or release may expose only account backup or Clone Phone. Do not reset the phone merely because one manual’s path is absent.
The archive is not detected
Confirm that the folder is named Backup, is on the phone’s internal shared storage, and was copied completely. If the folder exists only on the computer, copy it back before opening Local backup. Select the correct time point rather than assuming the newest visible entry is the intended one.
Some apps or files are missing after restoration
Check whether the missing item was app data, a downloaded file, a photo, or a document outside the categories selected during local backup. Sign in to the relevant app or account, use its own restore/export function, or retrieve the item from the separate copy you made. A local archive that contains an app package does not establish that the app’s private data was included.
The phone was reset before the archive was copied
OnePlus states that wiping data, erasing all data, or factory-resetting clears local-backup data stored on the phone. If no computer, external-storage, account, or Clone Phone copy exists, the local archive may no longer be available. Stop performing further erase operations and check every independent destination before attempting another reset.
The update stops or reboots repeatedly
Keep the phone connected to power and avoid interrupting it while the installation is active. If the device returns to Android but reports an incomplete update, reconnect to a stable network and check the update screen again. Use the off-device backup before any recovery step that could erase user data.

- Record the model and OxygenOS/Android version.
- Create a Local backup using the path that matches your version.
- Review the selected categories and separately protect photos, documents, downloads, and app-specific data.
- Copy the phone’s
Backupfolder to a computer or compatible external storage. - Confirm that the copied folder opens and remains available.
- Enable and complete any applicable Google-account synchronization or Clone Phone backup.
- Charge the phone or keep it above 60 percent, use a stable network, and do not interrupt installation.
- Afterward, restore only the archive and categories you need, then verify important contacts, messages, files, and app access.
