Before installing an Android update, make and verify a current Google backup, then check photos, downloads, and important apps separately. A routine software update does not automatically restore a backup if something is missing: Google’s documented restore process is generally part of setting up a new or reset phone, and some data can only be restored during setup.
Back up your Motorola phone before the update
- Prepare your account and phone. Connect to reliable Wi-Fi, confirm you can sign in to the Google Account you intend to use, and make sure the phone has a screen lock. Google recommends a PIN, pattern, or password rather than swipe or Smart Lock to help protect backed-up data.
- Open the backup settings. On Motorola’s general support path, go to Settings > System > Backup. Turn on Backup by Google One if it is off, and check that the selected Google Account is the right one. Menu names and locations can vary by phone; if the path does not match, search Settings for “backup.”
- Run and verify the backup. Tap Back up now if the option is available. Open Backup details to review the data types and apps listed, then wait for the phone to report that the backup is complete before starting the update. Google says a backup can take up to 24 hours; tapping the button alone does not confirm completion.
Check data that may need its own backup
A Google device backup is useful, but it does not guarantee that every app’s private data or every file stored locally can be recovered. Check anything important outside the main backup rather than assuming one switch covers it all.
- Photos and videos: Verify that Google Photos sync is on and that the items you care about appear in your Google Photos library. Motorola describes photos and videos as syncing to Google Photos, separately from Google Drive.
- Downloads and attachments: Review important local files and upload them to Drive if needed. Motorola specifically identifies files such as downloads and attachments as items you can upload there.
- App data: Check important apps individually. Google warns that not all apps can back up or restore all settings and data.
- WhatsApp chats: Enable WhatsApp’s own backup if you need its chat history and data. Google’s guidance is to restore that backup from the cloud after signing in and opening WhatsApp on the new Android device.
- Messages: Google’s Android backup guidance includes SMS/MMS; RCS messages are covered when using Google Messages. Motorola also lists SMS messages when using Messages. App and Android-version behavior can vary.
What Google’s phone backup includes
Motorola lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, phone settings—including Wi-Fi passwords and permissions—and SMS messages when using Messages. Photos and videos are included when synced with Google Photos. Google’s general Android guidance also lists SMS/MMS, device settings, call history, contacts, apps, and app data; RCS messages are covered when using Google Messages.
Google says backups are uploaded to Google and encrypted in transit. Some data is additionally encrypted with the device screen lock; Google Photos photos and videos and carrier MMS media are exceptions to that additional screen-lock encryption. Google’s Android Help guidance, accessed in 2026, lists up to 15 GB of storage at no charge for a Google Account. The available space in your account may be shared with other Google services.

Restore a backup if you replace or reset the phone
Google describes restoring a device backup during Android setup, including when setting up a new or reset phone. During setup, sign in with the Google Account that holds the backup and follow the restore prompts. Keep the old phone’s screen-lock PIN available: Google may ask for it. Some app data, settings data, and messages can only be restored during setup, and Google One Help says a factory reset and Android setup may be needed for some missing data.
A normal Android software update is not the same as setting up a new or reset phone, and the documented restore process does not say that installing an update automatically triggers a restore. Do not factory-reset the phone casually to try to recover something: a reset erases local phone data. First identify what is missing and whether the relevant app or Google backup offers a recovery path.

Check Android-version compatibility before restoring
A backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older Android version. Google says transfer works best when the destination runs the same or a later Android version; using an older version can result in an incomplete transfer. This matters most when restoring to another phone or setting up a reset device, not as a reason to treat every routine update as a restore operation.

Google’s current Google One Help guidance says a device backup may become unavailable after more than 57 days without using the device. That is a service guidance threshold, not a guarantee that every backup remains available until then. Check the backup status in the account you plan to use rather than relying on an old backup.
