A reliable DayZ server backup starts with the persistence files, not just the configuration. On most installations, the world state is in mpmissions/<active-mission>/storage_1/, especially the data folder containing the active .bin files. Those files represent camps, bases, vehicles and items that players expect to survive a restart. Stop the server before restoring them, keep several dated copies, and test a restore on a duplicate server directory before touching production.
DayZ folder names are not identical on every host or build. The mission name, the instanceId value and host-specific layout can change the path. Use the procedures below to identify the live persistence folder first, then back up the complete set of files needed to recreate the same world.

A world backup is useful only if it includes the files that define persistence and the files that let the server load the same mission and mods. Copy these items together so a restore does not produce a mismatched world.

A community recommendation is to copy the entire server directory when storage space permits. That captures the mission, configuration, keys, mods and any host-specific files in one snapshot. If a full copy is impractical, the minimum useful set is the active storage_1 data, the complete mission folder, serverDZ.cfg, keys and every mod required by that mission.

Find the persistence folder on your installation
Do not assume that every DayZ server uses the same path. Several community guides describe mpmissions/<mission>/storage_1/, while another describes a layout containing missions/db/, profiles/ and storage_x/ with players.db and vehicles.db. Those descriptions conflict, so treat the second layout as a possibility to verify rather than as a universal rule.
Start at the server root
- Open the directory that contains
serverDZ.cfg. - Confirm that the same directory contains
mpmissions/,keys/and, on a modded server, the installed mod folders. - Open the active mission directory under
mpmissions/. The folder name may identify the map and mission template. - Look for
storage_1/. Inside it, check fordata/and, often,backup/. - Within
data/, identify the active.binfiles and the two failsave files commonly labelled001and002. Do not rename or edit them.
The instanceId setting can change the storage slot name. Some references describe a path such as storage_<instanceId>/ rather than a fixed storage_1/. Read the value in serverDZ.cfg, then search the active mission tree for the corresponding storage directory. If more than one storage slot exists, compare modification times while the server is running and after a controlled restart to determine which one is active.

Community guidance indicates that a new value starts a fresh world and leaves the old slot on disk. Back up the old slot before changing the setting, and record the old and new values in your backup notes.
Prepare a safe backup
The safest copy is made while the server is stopped, because the persistence files can be written while players are active. A copy taken during a write may contain files from different moments. If you cannot stop the server, use a tool that can retry files that change during the copy, and label that snapshot as less certain until you verify it.

Stop and confirm the process has ended
- Warn players and allow a short period for an orderly shutdown.
- Use the host control panel or the server console to stop DayZ.
- Wait until the process is gone and file timestamps stop changing. Do not rely only on a control panel showing a stopping message.
- Record the date, time, map, mission name,
instanceId, game build and mod set in a text file beside the backup.
Copy the files without altering the originals
- Create a destination with a sortable name such as
dayz-backup-2026-10-14-2300. Use a different disk or host when possible. - Copy the entire
storage_1(or verifiedstorage_<instanceId>) directory, includingdataandbackup. - Copy the complete active mission directory, then
serverDZ.cfg,keysand all required mod folders. - For a full snapshot, copy the whole server root into the dated destination. Keep the original directory untouched until the copy is complete.
On Windows, Robocopy is commonly preferred over Xcopy for a live copy because retry and wait options can handle a file that is temporarily locked or changing. A representative pattern is robocopy <source> <destination> /E /R:3 /W:5; replace the paths with your own and review the result before treating the copy as valid. The safer default remains stopping the server first. On Linux, use an equivalent recursive copy tool and check its exit status; do not delete the source as part of a backup command.
Verify that the backup is usable
A folder that copied successfully can still be incomplete. Verification should be part of every scheduled or manual backup.

.binfile with a size of 0 KB is a warning sign commonly associated with a crash or incomplete write. - Compare file counts and total sizes with the source. A small difference caused by log files may be normal; a missing storage file is not.
- Open the copied configuration as text and verify that the recorded
instanceId, mission and mod settings match the snapshot notes. - Keep the copy read-only for ordinary administration, or at least restrict it to the server administrators. Never let a running production process write into the backup directory.
For higher assurance, restore the copy to a separate test directory or test machine. Start it with a different network port and a private password, join as an administrator, and confirm that known bases, vehicles and containers exist. A test restore is the only dependable way to discover that a path, mod or permission was omitted.
Choose a backup schedule and retention policy
There is no published DayZ-wide rule that guarantees a particular interval. Community hosting guidance commonly suggests a daily snapshot of the persistence directory and a weekly copy of the mission and configuration for a small vanilla server, with at least three versions retained. A busy modded server can lose more progress between daily snapshots, so take storage snapshots more often; taking one immediately before each planned restart is a practical additional safeguard.

Use a rotation rather than overwriting one file. A simple policy is three daily copies, four weekly copies and a permanent copy before each major upgrade. Put dates and times in UTC or state the timezone consistently, and write down whether the server was stopped for the snapshot.
Restore a DayZ world from a backup
Restoration replaces live persistence. Plan downtime, preserve the current state before deleting anything, and test the chosen backup on a copy if you can.
1. Select and preserve the current state
- Choose a dated backup whose mission,
instanceIdand mod versions match the world you intend to recover. - Stop the production server and wait for the process to exit completely.
- Make an emergency copy of the current server root, even if it is damaged. Name it with the time of the failed restore attempt.
2. Match the directory and configuration
- Read
serverDZ.cfgin the backup and note the mission andinstanceId. - Confirm that the production server will start with the same mission template and compatible mod files. Restore the backed-up
keysand mod folders if they are missing or were changed. - Do not point a server configured for one storage slot at a different slot by guesswork. If the backup contains
storage_1but the current configuration uses another instance value, resolve that mismatch before starting.
3. Replace the persistence data
- Inside the active mission, open the current
storage_1/datadirectory (or the verified configured storage directory). - Move its contents to the emergency copy or another quarantine directory. Do not permanently delete them until the restored world has been validated.
- Copy the backup’s
datacontents into the now-empty activedatadirectory. Include every.binfile and the failsave files supplied by that backup. - Preserve the directory structure and file names exactly. Do not mix individual files from different dates.
- If the backup includes a matching
backupsubfolder, copy it as well unless your host explicitly manages that folder.
This stop, clear and replace method is a community procedure rather than official Bohemia Interactive documentation. Treat it as a controlled file replacement: keep the emergency copy, make no edits to binary files, and be prepared to restore the pre-restore state if startup fails.
4. Start and validate
- Start the server and watch the console and log for errors before allowing players to connect.
- Verify that the expected mission loads and that the server is not creating a new empty storage slot.
- Join with an administrator account and check several known locations: a base, a vehicle, a storage container and a recently placed item.
- Ask a trusted player to confirm that ordinary characters and inventories behave normally.
- Only after validation should you remove the quarantine copy or resume the normal backup rotation.
Understand automatic repair and corruption symptoms
The storageAutoFix setting is reported to check persistence files at startup and replace corrupted files with empty files when set to 1. That may allow a server to start, but an empty replacement can mean lost world data. Verify that your build supports this setting and understand its behavior before enabling it. If a restore unexpectedly produces an empty area, inspect the logs and the storage file sizes before restarting repeatedly.

Common warning signs include a storage .bin at 0 KB, a server that starts with a fresh world, missing bases or vehicles, and logs reporting unreadable persistence files. Stop the server after recording the symptoms. Repeated starts can cause automatic repair behavior or overwrite the state you are trying to recover. Use the most recent known-good snapshot rather than combining damaged files from several attempts.
When the folder layout does not match
You see storage_x but no storage_1
Check instanceId and the active mission name. The storage directory may use the instance value, and changing that value can create a new world while leaving the previous slot untouched. Back up every candidate slot before changing configuration.

You see players.db and vehicles.db
That layout is described by one third-party guide but conflicts with the binary-file layout described by other community sources. Do not delete or convert those database files. Copy the complete directory, identify which files change during a controlled restart, and confirm the format with your hosting provider or the documentation for your exact server build.
The server starts but the world is empty
- Check that the restored files went into the mission directory the server actually loads.
- Check the mission name and
instanceIdin the active configuration. - Look for a newly created storage directory, which indicates a path or instance mismatch.
- Confirm that the server account can read the restored files and that their sizes are not zero.
- Stop the server, preserve the failed state, and retry with the complete matching snapshot.
Mods prevent startup after a restore
Restore the mod folders and keys from the same snapshot, then verify that the launch parameters reference the same set and order. A persistence backup cannot recreate mod files that were never copied. Do not let players connect until the server loads without missing-key or missing-addon errors.

Protect backups and document recovery
Backups contain the complete game state and configuration, so restrict write access to administrators and store at least one copy separately from the live server. A second host or offline disk protects against accidental deletion, host failure and a bad update. Encrypt the archive if it leaves your private infrastructure, and do not publish server passwords or administrative credentials in the backup directory.
Keep a short recovery record with the backup timestamp, server build, mission, instanceId, mod versions, storage path and the result of the last test restore. When an incident occurs, this record prevents guesswork and makes it clear which snapshot is safe to use.
Operational checklist
- Identify the active mission and storage directory rather than assuming the name.
- Stop the server for normal backups and every restore.
- Copy
storage_1or the verified instance-specific storage directory, includingdataandbackup. - Include the mission folder,
serverDZ.cfg,keysand mod folders. - Use dated, non-overwriting snapshots and retain several versions.
- Reject or investigate 0 KB persistence files.
- Before replacing data, quarantine the current server state.
- Restore a complete matching snapshot; never mix files from different dates.
- Test on a copy and validate bases, vehicles, containers and items before reopening the server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I back up only the DayZ database files?
Only if you have verified that your specific build uses that database layout. Many installations use binary files under the active mission’s storage directory, so a database-only copy can omit the actual world state. Copy the complete storage directory and configuration unless your host documents a different format.
Will changing instanceId recover an older world?
Changing it selects or creates a different storage slot; it does not merge worlds. Back up first, record the old value, and confirm which slot contains the desired files before starting the server.
What should I do if a restored .bin file is 0 KB?
Keep the server stopped, preserve the failed restore, and select an earlier verified snapshot. A zero-size persistence file is commonly associated with a crash or incomplete write and should not be treated as valid data.
