To preserve the latest Apple Watch data before service, keep the paired iPhone nearby and unpair the watch from it. Apple says unpairing creates a backup first. Erasing the watch directly is not a substitute: it removes data and settings without making a backup.
Before handing over or shipping the watch, remove its band, protect your account credentials, and follow the instructions for your service route. If the paired iPhone is unavailable, understand what will be lost before you erase anything.
Back up the watch before service
Apple Watch backs up automatically to its paired iPhone when the devices are near each other; there is no separate routine backup button to press. Unpairing the watch from that iPhone makes a backup first, saving the latest watch data available through that process. The backup can later be used when pairing the same watch or a replacement.

- Bring the paired iPhone close to the watch. This lets the devices communicate before you begin. If you have more than one iPhone, use the one that is paired with this watch; a different iPhone is not a substitute for the paired device in the unpairing process.
- Unpair the Apple Watch from the paired iPhone. Apple says this step creates a backup before the watch is unpaired. Keep the iPhone available, since you may need it when setting up the watch again. Do this before service or shipment rather than relying on a technician to preserve the data.
- Confirm you have a backup route for Health and Fitness data. Apple says Health and Fitness data is included only when you use iCloud or an encrypted computer backup. If preserving this information matters, make sure one of those backup conditions applies. An ordinary unencrypted computer backup does not meet the stated condition.
An iPhone backup made to iCloud or to a computer also includes Apple Watch data. That can be useful if you are restoring the iPhone as well as the watch, but it does not change the important distinction: unpairing the watch with its paired iPhone is the action Apple identifies as creating the current watch backup before service. The watch backup is associated with the paired iPhone, so an iPhone backup may also help preserve it as part of an iPhone restoration.

Think of unpairing as the data-preservation step and service preparation as the separate hand-off step. If you still need the watch for everyday use, plan the timing: once it is unpaired, you will need to pair it again to use it as a watch. Avoid assuming that a repair intake or a direct erase will create the backup on your behalf.
If the watch is set up for a family member
A watch set up for a family member follows a different backup path. Apple says it backs up directly to that family member’s iCloud when the watch is connected to power and Wi-Fi. Do not assume this setup uses the standard paired-iPhone backup route. If you are preparing a family member’s watch, make sure it has the power and Wi-Fi connection Apple specifies and consider which family member’s iCloud account is involved before service.
What an Apple Watch backup includes—and what it does not
A backup can preserve settings, data for some apps, watch-face configuration, Health and Fitness history and settings, synced media selections, and other preferences. It is not a complete copy of every credential, connection, or item on the watch. Apple describes app data as applying to some apps, so do not assume every third-party app stores its full state in the watch backup.

Because of these exclusions, do not treat a restore as a promise that every item from the old watch will reappear. In particular, payment cards and the passcode are not carried over as watch-backup contents, and information that syncs to iCloud is handled through that sync rather than being included in the watch backup. Bluetooth pairings are also excluded, so expect to set up connections again where needed.
There is a useful distinction between information that is excluded from the watch backup and information that is not preserved at all. Apple says data that syncs to iCloud is not included in the watch-backup contents; it is handled through iCloud syncing. Health and Fitness data has its own condition: use iCloud or an encrypted computer backup to include it. If that history is important to you, do not rely on a general assumption that all watch data is covered simply because an iPhone is backed up.
Media selections and preferences may be restored, but that wording is not a guarantee that every song, photo, app detail, or account credential will be reproduced exactly as it appeared before service. Plan to review the restored watch and complete any setup the watch requests. The safest expectation is that the backup helps restore supported settings and information, while excluded items and data dependent on syncing or app behavior may require separate attention.
If you cannot use the paired iPhone
Apple’s service-preparation guidance says to erase the watch if its paired iPhone is unavailable. That is a privacy and service-preparation action, not a backup: erasing removes media, data, and settings without creating a backup, and it does not remove Activation Lock.

If you need the information on the watch and do not have its paired iPhone, pause before erasing it. The erase procedure cannot save a new backup. Apple’s guidance for an unresponsive watch when no iPhone is available also says Apple Pay cards can be removed and Apple Cash turned off through the Apple Account website. These are account-protection actions, not ways to recover or back up the watch’s data.
- Paired iPhone available and usable: unpair from that iPhone to create a backup first.
- Paired iPhone unavailable: an erase does not create a backup; weigh data preservation against preparing the device for service.
- Watch unresponsive, with no iPhone available: use the Apple Account website to remove Apple Pay cards and turn off Apple Cash, as Apple advises.
These paths are not interchangeable. Unpairing through the paired iPhone is the route that saves a backup before service. Erasing directly on the watch is what Apple recommends for service preparation when the paired iPhone is unavailable, but it does not create a backup and does not clear Activation Lock. If the watch is unresponsive, follow the relevant service instructions and do not assume that an erase, remote card removal, or turning off Apple Cash saves watch data.
Prepare the watch and protect your account
Remove the band and accessories
Remove the watch band before an in-person service appointment. If Apple sends an Express Replacement return kit, send only what the kit instructions request: Apple says not to include the band or other accessories in the return box. Keeping accessories out of the shipment reduces the risk of sending items Apple did not request and needing to retrieve them later.
For mail-in or replacement service, read the instructions that accompany the shipping materials rather than packing the watch as if it were an in-person hand-off. Apple’s Express Replacement guidance specifically calls for the provided kit and return process. The watch band is not part of the requested return, and accessories should stay out unless the instructions for your case explicitly say otherwise.

Keep passwords and passcodes private
Apple Support warns: “Never give your Apple Account password, device passcode or account security details to anyone else.” Apple says neither it nor Apple Authorized Service Providers will ask for those details. If a software-support interaction requires you to enter a passcode or password, stay present while the technician has access to the device.
This advice applies even when the service request is legitimate. Do not hand over account security details simply because a watch is being repaired, shipped, or replaced. If a technician needs a device unlocked for a software-support interaction, remain there while entering the passcode or password yourself. Keep the distinction clear between entering information yourself while present and disclosing that information to another person.
Bring what the service location may need
For an in-person visit, check whether the location requires an appointment. Apple advises bringing the watch, its paired iPhone, relevant accessories, proof of purchase if possible, and personal identification. The paired iPhone is especially important if you need to unpair and back up the watch before handing it over. Bringing proof of purchase is advised if you have it; Apple does not state that it is always required.

Check the appointment details for the specific location and service provider rather than assuming every site has the same intake process. A Genius Bar and an Apple Authorized Service Provider are both listed in-person options, but authorized providers may have their own service fees. Bring only accessories that are relevant to the issue or requested for the appointment, and do not send extras in a mail-in or Express Replacement box unless the instructions call for them.
Choose the right service route

The practical choice depends on whether you can reach a service location, whether you need a mail-in process, and whether you qualify for the distinct Express Replacement benefit. For any route, the data decision comes first: if the paired iPhone is available, unpair the watch to back it up before service. The physical hand-off differs by route, but erasing the watch directly remains a different action and will not create that backup.
Apple lists in-person service at a Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider, as well as mail-in service with a prepaid shipping box. For an in-person visit, check whether you need an appointment and bring the paired iPhone and items Apple recommends. For mail-in service, use the prepaid box and follow the shipment instructions, including any directions about what to send. Do not improvise the return package when Apple has supplied a specific process.
Express Replacement is a distinct AppleCare service path, not a standard option for every repair. Apple says it is unavailable in some countries and regions. Check your plan and local availability before relying on it. For GPS + Cellular models, Apple’s Express Replacement instructions include moving the mobile plan as part of preparation; follow the instructions provided for your case. Do not assume every watch model, coverage arrangement, or location qualifies, or that Express Replacement is the same as a routine mail-in repair.
Service details depend on the watch model, location, coverage, parts availability, and inspection. Apple says repair estimates may be subject to tax, a shipping fee may apply, and Apple Authorized Service Providers can set their own service fees. Apple also states that its service and replacement parts are guaranteed for 90 days or the remaining term of the Apple warranty, whichever is longer; confirm current local terms before relying on that coverage. No single repair price can be inferred without the relevant model, location, coverage, and inspection details.

Restore the watch after service
After service, pair the watch with the iPhone and choose the option to restore from a backup if one is available. Apple presents restore as an option during pairing, not a guarantee that a usable backup exists or that every old-watch item will return. If the watch was set up for a family member, use that family member’s iCloud-backed route when restoring.

Once setup is complete, check the items that matter to you—such as watch faces, app data, Health and Fitness information, and synced media.
