Yes—you can still back up and migrate an Xperia after Sony has stopped issuing Android or security updates. If the phone still turns on and you can unlock it, first create a Google backup, then make an independent USB copy of irreplaceable files. Move the backed-up data to the replacement Android phone during its initial setup, check items that Android cannot copy automatically, and only then erase the old Xperia.
Use the exact Xperia model and Android version when following menu labels: Sony changes features and wording between generations. Do not factory-reset, trade in, or recycle the old phone until the new phone and your computer copy have both been checked.
What changes when an Xperia stops receiving updates?
An end to Android or security updates affects the phone’s future protection and compatibility; it does not prevent the phone from being copied. Backup and transfer depend mainly on whether the Xperia boots, accepts your screen-lock credential, can connect to Wi-Fi or USB, and still has access to your Google Account.
Think of the migration as two separate safeguards:
- Cloud backup and setup transfer: Google can restore supported apps, app data, contacts, call history, device settings and SMS/MMS.
- Independent file archive: A computer copy protects original photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings and other folders even when an app’s data is not included in Android backup.
Keeping both copies avoids a single point of failure. A Google backup may omit an app’s private data, while a USB file copy cannot recreate an app’s signed-in state or settings.

Before you start: protect access to the old phone
Record the details you will need
- Write down the exact Xperia model name or model number and its Android version.
- Confirm the Google Account email address used on the Xperia.
- Record the screen-lock PIN, pattern or password. A credential is needed to unlock the phone and can provide stronger protection for backed-up data than a swipe-only lock.
- Make sure you can sign in to important accounts, especially your Google Account, password manager, banking services and two-factor-authentication service.
Prepare the phone and destination
- Charge the Xperia and the replacement phone. Keep both connected to power during a long transfer.
- Connect the Xperia to a reliable Wi-Fi network and check that it has enough free storage to complete a backup.
- Have a known-good, data-capable USB cable and a computer with enough free storage for your personal files.
- Do not remove the SIM or eSIM, sign out of accounts or reset the Xperia yet.
If the old phone is already failing, start with the computer copy of the most irreplaceable files before spending time on optional cleanup.
Run a Google backup on the Xperia
Start the backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google.
- Choose All services.
- Under services for this device, open Backup.
- Tap Back up now and leave the phone connected to Wi-Fi and power.
Google’s current Android documentation says this backup can include apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS. It describes backing up the old phone first as the fastest way to transfer those categories. The no-charge Google Account storage allowance is 15 GB; that space is shared with other Google services, so a nearly full account can prevent completion.
Google says a Google One device backup can take up to 24 hours. A status screen that remains active for a while is not proof of failure. Check the backup timestamp and any error message before trying again.
Check what the backup does not promise
Android backup is selective. It is not a complete image of the Xperia’s internal storage, and each app decides whether and what data it supports. The backup also does not guarantee that an app will restore its login session, downloaded content or private database.
Google Photos is a separate check. Open Google Photos on the old Xperia, confirm that the account and backup setting are correct, and review the library for recent pictures and videos. Photos and videos are available on the new phone only after Google Photos has backed them up. If the library is incomplete, copy the originals to a computer before erasing the Xperia.

Make an independent USB copy of personal files
A computer archive is the second, independent copy you should make even when Google backup reports success. It preserves files that are outside Android’s backup categories and gives you something to inspect before you wipe the old device.
Copy files from Windows or macOS
- Connect the Xperia to the computer with a data-capable USB cable.
- Unlock the Xperia.
- If a USB notification asks how to use the connection, select File transfer or MTP, not charge-only.
- Open the Xperia’s internal storage on the computer and copy your personal folders to a clearly named folder for this phone.
At minimum, check DCIM, Pictures, Movies, Music, Download, Documents and Recordings. Also look for folders created by camera, scanning, editing, messaging, recorder and export apps. If you use a microSD card, inspect it separately and copy it as well.

- Open several photos, videos, documents and recordings directly from the computer copy.
- Compare approximate file counts and date ranges with the Xperia’s folders.
- Check that large videos finish copying and play beyond their first few seconds.
- Keep the original files on the Xperia until these checks pass.
Sony’s current Xperia Companion requirements mention one available USB port and a USB cable, but a cable that charges can still fail at data transfer. If the computer does not show the phone, unlock it again, select File transfer/MTP, try another known-good data cable and try another USB port. The precise Windows or macOS recovery steps vary by computer and Xperia model.
Move data to a new Android phone during setup
Use a cable when possible
Start the replacement phone while it is still in its initial Android setup. When setup offers to copy apps and data, connect the two phones with a compatible cable. An adapter may be required when the plugs do not match. Cable transfer is usually the more predictable choice because it avoids a weak wireless connection, although Google says the cable and wireless options support the same data categories.
- Turn on the new phone and follow setup until it asks whether to copy apps and data.
- Connect the old Xperia and new phone with the compatible cable and any required adapter.
- Unlock the Xperia and approve the connection if prompted.
- On the new phone, select the categories you want to copy and continue.
- Keep both phones charged, nearby and connected until setup reports completion.
Google says a direct transfer can take from a few minutes to a few hours, depending on the amount of data. Large photo and video libraries, many applications or a slow cable increase the time.

Choose wireless transfer when a cable is unavailable
At the same setup screen, choose the wireless option and follow the pairing instructions shown on both phones. Keep the Xperia unlocked and both devices near the router or one another as instructed. Wireless transfer supports the same data categories as cable transfer, but interruptions are more likely if either phone loses power or connectivity.
Restore from the Google Account when the Xperia is unavailable
If the old phone will not boot, select the option to restore from a Google Account backup during new-phone setup and sign in with the same account. Google warns that a backup made on a higher Android version may not restore completely to a phone running a lower Android version. The destination phone may therefore receive fewer apps, settings or data than a same-or-newer-version device.
Restoration is most complete during initial setup. If you skip the copy screen, some phones require a factory reset to expose the full setup-time restore flow again; do not reset the new phone until you have confirmed what it already contains and have another copy of anything important.
Data that may need a separate move
Google identifies several categories that may not copy during setup: downloads, media in hidden folders, apps installed outside Google Play, data from apps that do not use Android backup, non-Google accounts, non-Google contacts and calendars, ringtones and some settings.
Authentication and passwords
Transfer two-factor-authenticator accounts before wiping the Xperia. Use the authenticator’s export, cloud-sync or account-recovery procedure, and test a code on the new phone. Verify that your password-manager vault opens and that you have recovery methods for accounts that require an old device.

Messaging and chat history
Each messaging app has its own export or cloud-backup process. For WhatsApp, enable its backup on the old phone, then sign in and open WhatsApp on the new phone so it can restore the cloud copy. Do not assume that an Android device backup contains every chat database.
Notes, recordings and proprietary app data
Export notes, voice recordings, project files and app-specific databases using the app’s own instructions. Then include the resulting exports in the computer archive. Check file formats and open a sample on the new phone or computer.
Accounts, contacts and calendars outside Google
Sign in to each supported account on the new phone or use that service’s sync/export feature. Contacts stored only on the device or SIM may require an explicit export, import or SIM transfer rather than relying on Google backup.
Why Xperia Transfer 2 and Xperia Companion are not the same thing
Xperia Transfer 2 is discontinued
Sony ended the Xperia Transfer 2 service on June 30, 2023, and the app was removed from Google Play for download. It is not a current migration route. Use Android’s built-in transfer flow or Google’s cloud backup instead.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteCurrent Xperia Companion has limited relevance to backup
Xperia Companion is available for Windows and macOS and can still provide supported repair or device-management functions. However, Sony’s current feature information and FAQ do not present it as a dependable general backup solution for newer Xperia generations. Sony states that after December 2023 it is no longer possible to back up data with the Xperia Companion PC app, and that Xperia phones released from 2019 onward use Google Drive backup.

If you install Xperia Companion for a supported task, use the latest release. Sony says versions older than 24.9.1.202408201019, released September 2, 2024, are no longer supported. Updating the program does not change the limitation on PC data backup.
Method comparison
| Method | Best for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Google Backup/Google One | Apps, supported app data, contacts, call history, settings and SMS/MMS; restoring when the old phone is unavailable | Not every app or file is included; a backup can take up to 24 hours and restoration is most complete during setup |
| Android cable or wireless setup transfer | Direct migration to a new Android phone | Usually tied to setup; downloads, hidden-folder media, non-Play apps and unsupported app data may be omitted |
| USB computer copy | Photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings and an independent archive | Needs a working data cable, enough computer storage and manual verification |
| Xperia Companion | Repair and limited device management on supported combinations | Sony no longer presents it as a current backup path for newer Xperia generations; older versions are unsupported |
Verification checklist before erasing the Xperia
Verification is the point at which you discover omissions while the old phone can still supply them. On the new phone, work through this list:
- Open Google Photos and check recent pictures and videos, not just older albums.
- Open Contacts and confirm important entries, including any non-Google contacts you expected to keep.
- Open Messages and inspect recent conversations.
- Open Files and inspect Downloads, Documents and other folders you use.
- Launch the applications that contain important work or records and confirm their data and sign-in state.
- Generate a test authenticator code and confirm password-manager access.
- Open several photos, videos, documents and recordings from the computer archive.
- Confirm banking, email and messaging access before losing the old device’s recovery session.
Only after these checks should you sign out where appropriate, remove the SIM or eSIM, and factory-reset the old Xperia. Keep the computer archive until you have used the new phone long enough to be confident that no delayed restore or missing file remains.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The Google backup will not finish
- Connect the Xperia to stable Wi-Fi and power.
- Check the Google Account’s available storage; the free allowance is 15 GB shared across Google services.
- Confirm the phone is unlocked and that the Backup screen shows a recent attempt or an error.
- Allow additional time—Google documents up to 24 hours for a Google One backup.
- Protect irreplaceable files immediately with the USB computer copy instead of waiting for cloud backup to solve every category.
The computer sees only charging
- Unlock the Xperia.
- Open the USB notification and select File transfer or MTP.
- Replace the cable with a known data cable.
- Try another USB port and, if possible, another computer.
If none of these changes exposes storage, prioritize cloud backup and investigate model-specific USB drivers or operating-system steps; those details differ between Xperia models and computer systems.
The new phone does not show everything
Check the omitted categories against Google’s list: downloads, hidden folders, outside-Google-Play apps, unsupported app data, non-Google accounts, non-Google contacts or calendars, ringtones and some settings. Retrieve those from the old phone or your computer archive. Also check Android-version compatibility when restoring from a higher-version backup to a lower-version phone.
The old Xperia cannot be unlocked
Without the screen-lock credential, encrypted local data may not be readable. Try the Google Account restore during new-phone setup if a recent cloud backup exists. Do not factory-reset the old phone while investigating, because resetting removes the remaining local source.
A practical order of operations
- Identify the Xperia model, Android version and Google Account; record the unlock credential.
- Charge both phones and connect the Xperia to Wi-Fi.
- Run Settings → Google → All services → Backup → Back up now.
- Check Google Photos for a complete library.
- Copy personal folders to a computer over USB using File transfer/MTP.
- Open copied files and compare counts or dates.
- Set up the new Android phone and transfer by compatible cable, or use wireless transfer.
- Restore separately supported app data, authenticator accounts, password access, chats, notes and recordings.
- Verify the new phone and the computer archive.
- Only then remove the SIM or eSIM, sign out as needed and factory-reset the old Xperia.
This sequence preserves the old phone as a fallback until both the cloud migration and an independent local archive have proved usable.
