There is no universal settings folder for open-source desktop software. The reliable method is app-specific: identify the program’s documented profile or export feature, make a separate backup while the program is closed, restore through the destination app’s instructions, and verify the result before removing the original.
This matters because a profile may contain far more than interface preferences. Depending on the application, it can include mail, saved passwords, bookmarks, extensions, templates, document data, and other personal information. Treat every app as a separate migration project rather than copying an entire hidden home directory.
What you are actually backing up
“Settings” is an ambiguous term. Desktop applications commonly keep preferences alongside working data, credentials, plug-ins, caches, and recovery files. A successful migration starts by deciding which of those categories you need.

Preferences and application state
These include themes, keyboard shortcuts, window layouts, account choices, language settings, toolbars, and other options that control how the program behaves. Some applications export these choices separately; others store them inside a larger profile.

Personal data inside a profile
Mozilla documents that a Firefox profile can include bookmarks, saved passwords, extensions, and other personal data. Thunderbird describes its profile as containing messages, passwords, user preferences, and additional user data. Copying such a profile is therefore a data migration, not merely a preferences transfer.
Cache and recovery data
Cache directories are often separate from the main profile and may be disposable. Recovery files have a different purpose again: they help recover an unfinished document after a crash, but they do not necessarily preserve a complete application configuration. Keep these distinctions in your inventory instead of assuming every file under an application’s directory is equally important.
The safe, app-by-app migration workflow
Use this sequence for each application. The exact command or folder depends on the program and operating system, but the safety checks are consistent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Define the scope. Write down whether you need only preferences, or also mail, passwords, bookmarks, extensions, templates, accounts, and working files. Record anything that must not be overwritten at the destination.
- Read the application’s current documentation. Look for a profile manager, export command, backup tool, or migration article. Prefer an official export or backup when one exists, especially when moving to a new computer.
- Locate the documented profile. Use the app’s own About, Troubleshooting Information, Profile Manager, or Settings page where available. Do not infer a path from another application or from a forum post about an older release.
- Quit the application completely. Close every window and confirm that its background process has stopped. Copying a live profile can capture incomplete files or produce an inconsistent backup.
- Make an independent copy. Copy the exported archive or closed-app profile to a separate destination such as an external drive. A second live copy on another computer or in synchronized storage is not automatically a backup.
- Prepare the destination application. Install the same application family, review its version and operating-system differences, and create a destination profile if the documentation requires one.
- Restore using the documented route. Import the export, or copy the backup contents into the destination profile while the application remains closed. Follow any required folder naming or profile-manager steps exactly.
- Verify before cleanup. Open the restored application and check the settings and data you listed in step one. Test important accounts, extensions, mail folders, bookmarks, and documents. Keep the original installation and backup until verification is complete.
Where common profile folders are found
Paths vary by application, edition, operating system, and profile configuration. The following are common Firefox locations documented by Mozilla; they are starting points, not a promise that every installation uses them.
| Operating system | Firefox profile root | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | %APPDATA%MozillaFirefoxProfiles |
The active profile can be selected through profile metadata, environment variables, or command-line arguments. |
| Linux | ~/.mozilla/firefox |
Distribution packaging and custom launch options can change the effective location. |
| macOS | ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles |
Use Firefox’s profile information to confirm the profile actually in use. |
Firefox also maintains local and cache directories separately in common installations. Copying only a remembered cache folder can miss persistent data, while copying every hidden directory in your home folder can bring along unrelated or obsolete state. Thunderbird has its own profile locations and should be located through Thunderbird’s profile instructions rather than by reusing Firefox’s path.
Export tools versus manual profile copies
When both methods are available, choose according to the job rather than convenience alone.

| Decision point | Official export or backup | Manual profile copy |
|---|---|---|
| Best use | Moving supported data to a new device or reinstalling the application. | Targeted recovery, troubleshooting, or a documented alternative when export is unavailable. |
| Scope | Defined by the application; it may include selected personal data, preferences, or both. | Potentially the entire profile, including mail, passwords, extensions, and other data. |
| Portability | Often designed for supported destinations, but still subject to version and operating-system limits. | A whole profile may fail across operating systems or application versions. |
| Risk of accidental overwrite | Usually reduced by an import workflow. | Higher; replacing files can overwrite a newly created destination profile. |
| Repeatability | Depends on whether the app can create recurring exports. | Can be repeated with a backup tool that stores a reusable file-selection set. |
An export is not automatically complete, and a profile copy is not automatically portable. Read the method’s scope and compatibility notes before starting.

Firefox desktop: recommended and manual methods
Use Firefox’s built-in backup for a new device
Mozilla currently recommends its Firefox Backup tool for most users moving desktop data. Use that route when the source installation is working and the destination is a supported Firefox desktop installation. The tool is intended to reduce the need to identify individual files manually.
- On the source computer, open Firefox’s Backup feature and create the offered backup for desktop data.
- Store the resulting backup separately from the live Firefox profile. Treat the backup as sensitive because it may contain personal data such as passwords and bookmarks.
- On the destination computer, open Firefox’s corresponding restore or import path and select the backup.
- After restoration, check bookmarks, saved logins, extensions, history or other items that matter to you. Do not delete the source profile until those checks pass.
The exact labels and available items can change with Firefox releases, so follow the labels shown by the current desktop build rather than an old screenshot.
Manual Firefox profile copying
Manual copying is useful for a broken profile, selected-file recovery, or troubleshooting. Close Firefox fully first, then copy the documented profile folder to a separate destination. Restore into the destination profile using Mozilla’s current manual instructions; the correct folder name and replacement steps depend on the destination profile.
Do not assume that a complete Firefox profile will work unchanged between different operating systems. Mozilla warns that path and version differences can make whole-profile transfers non-portable. When crossing those boundaries, use Firefox’s supported backup or import route, or move selected data instead of replacing the entire profile.
Why Firefox may use more than one location
Gecko applications separate a profile root from local or cache data. Firefox profile selection can also depend on profiles.ini, environment variables, and command-line arguments. That is why copying only one folder remembered from a previous installation can omit the active profile or capture a profile that Firefox no longer uses.

Thunderbird: profile backup and relocation
What a Thunderbird profile contains
Thunderbird’s profile can include messages, passwords, preferences, and changes made while using the application. Decide whether your goal is mail recovery, a complete move, or a smaller settings transfer before choosing a method.
Export or copy the profile
Thunderbird’s help provides an export tool for backing up data and describes profile copying as an alternative. For a manual backup, locate the profile through Thunderbird’s profile information, quit Thunderbird, and copy the profile folder to a separate location. A USB stick is one possible destination; the documentation does not establish a required capacity, speed, brand, or file system.
Move to a different destination
- Install Thunderbird on the destination computer and close it.
- Use Thunderbird’s Profile Manager to create a profile at the destination when the move instructions call for one.
- With Thunderbird still closed, copy the contents of the backup into that destination profile, following the current instructions for folder placement.
- Start Thunderbird and verify accounts, message folders, passwords, preferences, and any other data included in your scope.
Thunderbird makes an important distinction: “But storing it separately is NOT a backup.” A profile sitting on the same computer, another computer, or cloud storage may be a working copy or synchronized copy. A backup is a separate, recoverable copy that you can use after deletion, corruption, or a failed migration.
LibreOffice: do not confuse recovery with configuration migration
The LibreOffice 26.2 Getting Started Guide describes AutoRecovery information for open documents and an option to save a previous document version as a .BAK copy. Those features protect document work and can help after a crash or an accidental change.
They do not establish a complete export of LibreOffice user preferences. Do not present AutoRecovery or document-level backup copies as a method for migrating every toolbar, extension, template, account, or application setting. For a full LibreOffice move, identify the current profile and configuration instructions for the exact operating system and release you are using, and treat document recovery files as a separate concern.
Using KDE KBackup for selected configuration folders
KDE KBackup can support a broader, repeatable workflow when you know which application folders need protection. Its handbook describes a reusable .kbp selection profile containing included and excluded files or folders, the destination, an archive prefix, and a maximum slice size.

- The available storage capacity may vary.
When this approach helps
- You maintain several open-source applications and want one documented selection of their configuration folders.
- You need exclusions for caches, temporary files, or large working directories.
- You want to repeat the same selection without rebuilding it manually each time.
What it does not solve
KBackup does not provide a universal list of files required by every application. You still have to identify each app’s profile, determine whether it contains sensitive data, close the app before copying, and test restoration. A reusable selection profile improves repeatability; it does not make an unknown folder safe to migrate.
Cross-operating-system and cross-version moves
Portability is the most common reason a seemingly complete profile fails. Paths, permissions, account identifiers, encryption facilities, native libraries, and application versions can differ between Windows, Linux, and macOS. Firefox explicitly warns about operating-system path and version differences, and the same caution is sensible for other desktop software.
Prefer data import over wholesale replacement when boundaries change
If the source and destination use different operating systems or substantially different application versions, first look for an export/import workflow. Move bookmarks, mail, passwords, templates, or other supported categories individually when the application provides that option. A complete profile replacement is appropriate only when the app’s documentation says the source and destination are compatible.
Keep the source available
Do not uninstall the old application or erase its profile immediately after copying. A failed start, missing extension, unreadable mail folder, or invalid preference can require returning to the source and repeating the migration with a narrower data set.

- Preference test: check the interface, language, shortcuts, account choices, and other settings you specifically wanted.
- Data test: open representative mail folders, bookmarks, saved documents, templates, or project files.
- Credential test: confirm that saved passwords or account tokens are present and usable, while recognizing that some credentials may be protected by the original operating system.
- Extension test: check that extensions or plug-ins appear, are enabled, and work with the destination version.
- Write test: make a harmless settings change, close the app, reopen it, and confirm the change persists.
Keep the old installation and independent backup until these checks are complete. If only one category failed, restore that category or repeat the import rather than replacing the entire destination profile again.

Common failure modes and safer fixes
The application was still running
Symptom: the copy completes but the destination has missing or inconsistent data. Fix: quit the application and any background process, make a fresh copy, and restore from that closed-app copy.
The wrong profile was copied
Symptom: the destination opens with old preferences or none of the expected data. Fix: return to the application’s profile or troubleshooting screen and confirm the active profile. For Firefox, review profile selection metadata rather than relying on a single remembered directory.
A cache was mistaken for the profile
Symptom: temporary files appear, but bookmarks, mail, passwords, or preferences do not. Fix: identify the documented persistent profile and treat cache locations separately.

Symptom: the app refuses to start, resets preferences, or shows missing paths and extensions. Fix: restore the source, install a compatible destination version if appropriate, and use supported export/import or selected-data migration instead of a wholesale replacement.
The only copy was synchronized storage
Symptom: a deletion or corruption appears on every synchronized device. Fix: maintain a separate, recoverable backup with an independent copy and verify that it can be read before relying on it.
Security and retention decisions
Profiles can contain passwords, mail, browsing history, private messages, and account tokens. Store the backup where unauthorized users cannot casually read it, and consider the security controls provided by your operating system and storage device. Do not upload a profile merely because cloud storage is convenient; synchronization is not the same as an independent backup.
Keep at least one copy separate from the computer being migrated. Before discarding an old backup, confirm that a newer copy opens or can be mounted and that the files needed for recovery are present. The right retention period depends on how often the data changes and how much history you need; the application documentation does not prescribe one universal schedule.
Quick Recap
A compact checklist
- List the exact settings and personal data required for each application.
- Find the current official profile, export, or backup instructions.
- Check operating-system and application-version compatibility.
- Close the application completely before manual copying.
- Save a separate copy, not just a live or synchronized profile.
- Restore through the app’s profile manager or import workflow.
- Verify preferences, data, credentials, extensions, and persistence.
- Keep the source and backup until verification is finished.
