Back up your OPPO phone before installing a major Android update, even though OPPO says an ordinary OTA update normally does not require one. The safest process uses three layers: an OPPO local backup, a Google backup, and a copy of the local backup and important media on a computer. First identify your ColorOS version, because the menu names differ. Then confirm that Google reports the selected data as saved and that the computer can open the copied files before you start the update.
Why backing up still matters before an OPPO update
OPPO’s general update guidance says an OTA update does not normally require a backup, but OPPO also recommends making backups a habit before updates. That advice is sensible because the exact data behavior depends on the phone model, region, installed ColorOS and Android versions, and the particular update package. The available support guidance does not establish a universal guarantee that every major update preserves every user item, so do not treat an update as risk-free. Read OPPO’s OTA Update Reminders and keep an independent copy before proceeding.
A backup is useful only if you know where it lives and what it contains. A local backup saved solely in the phone’s storage is not independent: OPPO says storage backups are removed by a factory reset and can also be erased by flashing or wiping data. A Google backup is held with your Google Account, while a computer export gives you a separate copy you can inspect without relying on the handset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose the backup layers that fit your situation
| Method | Where the copy lives | What it is useful for | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| OPPO local backup | Phone storage until you export it | Selected personal data, system data, and applications with their data, according to the items you select | It is erased by a factory reset, wipe, or flash if you have not copied the backup elsewhere |
| Google Account backup | Google’s cloud backup associated with the account on the phone | Supported apps and app data, contacts, call history, device settings, and SMS/MMS; photos and videos when backed up with Google Photos | Coverage varies by app, Android version, Google service, account storage, and the data type; some apps cannot back up or restore all settings or data |
| Computer export | Your computer or another storage device connected to it | An off-phone copy of the OPPO Backup folder plus media folders such as DCIM, Movies, and Music | Requires a compatible USB data cable, file-transfer access, enough computer space, and a careful copy |
For a major update, use all three when practical. If time or storage is limited, prioritize the Google backup and a computer copy of the OPPO Backup folder and irreplaceable media. Do not delete the phone-local copy until the computer copy is visible and readable.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Step 1: Check the phone’s ColorOS version
On the OPPO, open Settings > About Phone or Settings > About Device. OPPO notes that paths, labels, and screen images can differ between phones, so use the version as a guide rather than expecting an identical screen on every model. The version determines which local-backup and Google-backup route is most likely to appear. OPPO documents the version check and backup paths in How to Back Up Your OPPO Phone.
- Write down the ColorOS version and, if shown, the Android version.
- Keep the phone unlocked while working through the menus.
- Make sure you know which Google Account is signed in under the phone’s backup settings.
Step 2: Create an OPPO local backup
ColorOS 15 and later
- Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset.
- Tap Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Choose New backup.
- Select the data categories you want to include and tap Start.
ColorOS 5.0 through ColorOS 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings or Settings > System settings.
- Tap Back up and reset > Back up & restore.
- Choose Local backup > New backup.
- Select the categories and tap Start.
OPPO describes local backup as covering selected personal data such as contacts and messages, system data such as settings, clock information, and weather information, and applications with their data. The selection screen is authoritative for your handset: select everything you need rather than assuming every category is included automatically. Application coverage is conditional, so a local backup should not be treated as a universal copy of every app’s private database.
Leave the process running until the backup entry appears in the local-backup list. If the phone offers several dated backups, note the newest one and its location. Do not factory-reset, wipe, or flash the phone while the only copy is still in internal storage; OPPO says those operations can remove it.

Step 3: Run Google’s backup as a separate copy
Google backup on ColorOS 15 and later
- Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset.
- Tap Google accounts.
- Choose Back up now.
Google backup on ColorOS 5 through ColorOS 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Back up and reset.
- Enable Back up my data or Backup by Google One, depending on the label shown.
General Android route
Google’s current general route is Settings > Google services > All services > Backup > Back up now. If your OPPO uses different labels, search Settings for Backup and open the Google backup page. Google explains the process in Back up or restore data on your Android device and Back up your phone.

- SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
- HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
- BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
- COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
- INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.
Check what Google is actually including
Open Backup details on the Google backup screen. Google documents support for apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS. RCS messages, call settings, blocked numbers, and pictures or videos depend on using the relevant Google apps and services. Google explicitly warns that not all apps can back up or restore every setting and item of app data, so an enabled backup switch is not proof that every app is restorable.
A Google Account includes up to 15 GB of storage at no charge; Google says additional capacity is available through Google One. Check the account’s remaining space before starting. Google also says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours to complete. Treat the tap on Back up now as the beginning of the job, not its completion: return to the backup page and confirm that the selected data types show On or otherwise indicate that they are saved.
Step 4: Protect photos, videos, messages, and app-specific data
Photos and videos
Google identifies photos and videos as backed up when you use Google Photos. Open Google Photos and check that recent images from the OPPO are present in the account before the update. As a second route, copy the phone’s DCIM, Movies, and Music folders to a computer. This gives you a direct file copy even when a particular media item is not in Google Photos.

Messaging and authenticator apps
Google’s categories do not guarantee that every messaging, authentication, payment, or work app can recreate its private data. Open each essential app and look for its own export, cloud-backup, recovery-code, or account-transfer instructions. Save recovery codes somewhere other than the phone. Do not assume an OPPO local backup or Google backup can replace an app’s documented migration process.

Contacts and calendar data
Confirm whether important contacts and calendar entries are stored in the Google Account, an OPPO account, a SIM card, or only on the device. The Google backup screen can report contacts, but the account used for synchronization matters. If a contact is visible only on the handset, export it using the contact app’s own export option before updating.
Step 5: Copy the OPPO backup and media to a computer
OPPO’s computer instructions cover ColorOS 7 through ColorOS 13 and are published at How to Back Up Your OPPO Phone to a Computer. Newer phones may show different menu wording, but the principle is the same.
- Use a compatible USB cable that supports data, not only charging, and connect the unlocked OPPO to the computer.
- On the phone’s USB notification or connection screen, choose File transfer.
- Open the OPPO’s storage on the computer.
- Copy the entire Backup folder to a clearly named computer folder, such as
OPPO-backup-before-update-2026-10-16. - Separately copy DCIM, Movies, and Music, plus any other folders containing irreplaceable recordings or downloads.
- Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting the cable.
The connector type and exact USB screen depend on the model. If the computer shows only charging, unlock the phone and select File transfer again; if no data connection appears, reconnect with a compatible data cable and use another computer USB port. Do not erase the phone’s Backup folder merely because the computer has started copying it.

Step 6: Verify that the copies exist
Verification is a practical check, not a formal guarantee of a complete restore. On the computer, open the copied folder and confirm that it contains files and subfolders rather than an empty directory. Open several copied photos or videos from the computer. Check that the Google backup page shows the expected categories as saved or On, and confirm recent photos in Google Photos if you rely on that service.

- Confirm the computer copy is on a drive with enough free space and is not still showing an active transfer.
- Check that the local OPPO backup entry remains on the phone until you have finished the update.
- Record the Google Account email used for backup and make sure you can sign in to it from another device or browser.
- Keep app-specific recovery information with the computer copy, but do not store passwords in an unprotected plain-text file.
Google’s support pages do not provide a single test that proves every app setting and private database can be restored. The strongest available check is therefore to verify each layer’s status and inspect representative files, while treating unsupported app data as a separate risk.
Step 7: Prepare the phone and install the update safely
Before selecting the update command, follow OPPO’s OTA precautions. Keep the phone connected to power or above 40 percent battery, use a working Wi-Fi or mobile network, and do not operate or power off the device during installation. OPPO’s reminder is broad support guidance; the exact requirements can differ for the model and update package.
- Finish both backup processes and the computer export.
- Close any copy or backup operation still in progress.
- Connect the phone to reliable power, preferably where the cable will not be disturbed.
- Use a stable network and begin the update from the phone’s software-update screen.
- Leave the phone alone while it verifies, restarts, and completes the installation.
Do not promise yourself that the update cannot erase data. The backup is what gives you a recovery path if the particular model or update behaves differently from expectations.
What to do if the phone must be reset or restored
Restore during setup or after a factory reset
Google says the rest of a device backup is restored during initial setup or after a factory reset. Backed-up photos and videos remain available in Google Photos. Google says restoration can take up to 24 hours, so a newly reset phone may not show every supported item immediately.

Have the correct Google Account ready
Google’s factory-reset guidance says you should know the Google Account and password used on the phone before resetting it. A recent password change can require waiting 24 hours before a factory reset. This is reset guidance, not a requirement for installing an ordinary OTA update, but it matters if troubleshooting leads to a wipe.
Mind Android-version compatibility
Google says a backup from a newer Android version cannot be restored to a device running an older Android version. That restriction matters if you try to move data backward after an update or onto an older handset. Keep the computer export and app-specific recovery material available rather than relying on a single cloud restore.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
The local-backup option is missing
Recheck Settings > About Phone/About Device and use the path for the matching ColorOS range. OPPO states that labels and screens vary by device. If the option still does not appear, complete the Google backup and computer media export, then consult the support page for the exact model instead of selecting an unrelated reset command.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Google backup remains incomplete
Open Backup details, check the selected categories and account storage, and allow time for the operation. Google says completion can take up to 24 hours. If a category remains unavailable, treat that as a coverage limitation and use the app’s own export or migration method where one exists.
The computer cannot see the phone
Unlock the OPPO, reconnect the cable, and select File transfer rather than a charging-only mode. Use a compatible data cable and confirm that the computer has enough free space. If the phone is visible but the Backup folder is absent, verify that the local backup actually completed before copying.
A photo or app is missing after the update
Check Google Photos, the computer’s DCIM and media folders, and the app’s own account or restore instructions. A missing item does not prove the entire backup failed: Google documents that app support varies, and media may be stored through a separate service.
