Before a major ColorOS update, make an OPPO local backup, copy that backup off the phone to a computer, and separately verify Google device backup and Google Photos. A backup stored only on the phone is not a safe independent copy: OPPO warns it can be erased by a reset, wipe, or flash. OPPO says an OTA update does not require a backup, but recommends backing up before updating.
1. Check your ColorOS version and choose a backup route
On the phone, open Settings > About Phone or Settings > About Device and note the ColorOS version. OPPO says menu labels can vary by device, so use the path that matches your version and look for similarly named backup options if the wording differs.

These methods serve different purposes. For a major update, the strongest practical approach is to make a local backup, export it to a computer, and confirm the cloud copies you rely on.
2. Create a local backup on the OPPO phone
ColorOS 15 and later
- Open Settings > System & update > Back up & reset > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Tap New backup, select the categories you want to include, then tap Start.
- Keep the phone powered and do not turn it off or restart while the backup runs. OPPO recommends a network connection, preferably Wi-Fi.
- Wait for the process to finish and confirm that the new backup appears in the backup list.
ColorOS 5.0 through 14
- Open Settings > Additional settings or System settings, then find Back up and reset.
- Open Back up & restore or Local backup, depending on the phone’s labels.
- Tap New backup, select the data categories, and tap Start.
- Keep the phone powered and do not turn it off or restart during the process. Wait for completion and check that the backup is listed.
OPPO notes that the exact menu path and available categories depend on the device. Do not assume every app, secure folder, authenticator, or app-specific database is included; check critical apps’ own backup or export options.

3. Copy the backup and important media to a computer
OPPO’s computer-backup instructions use a compatible USB cable and the phone’s Transfer Files mode. They also describe enabling USB debugging through Developer Options for that workflow. Follow the instructions for your device if the computer does not show the phone’s storage.
- Connect the phone to the computer with a compatible data-transfer USB cable.
- On the phone, choose Transfer Files when prompted.
- From the phone’s internal shared storage, copy the Backup folder to the computer.
- Copy important media folders separately. OPPO calls out DCIM for photos and screenshots, plus Movies and Music as needed. Pictures downloaded from apps may be in Pictures/Photo.
- On the computer, open the copied folders and check that the files you need are present before starting the update.
OPPO warns that phone-storage data, including the backup, is erased if you flash the phone, wipe data, or reset it to factory settings. 4. Verify Google device backup and Google Photos separately
Google device backup
OPPO describes Google backup for app data, Wi-Fi settings, and other preferences. Its support material also lists categories such as apps and app data, device settings, contacts, call history, and SMS where supported. The available categories depend on the phone and system configuration.

Open the backup screen for the Google account you intend to use and confirm that a recent backup completed successfully. OPPO’s Google Drive backup guidance describes supported categories, but the backup screen on your own device is the relevant check for what is enabled there.

Photos and videos
Google device backup and photo/video backup are separate checks. In Google Photos, confirm that you are using the intended Google account, that backup is enabled, and that the device folders containing the pictures or videos you need are selected. OPPO’s data management guide explains Google Photos backup and folder selection. Cloud sync should not be treated as proof that every local folder or app-specific file has uploaded.

Before updating, check any app whose data would be difficult to replace—such as an authenticator or an app that stores files locally—for its own export, recovery, or backup procedure. OPPO’s general backup instructions do not establish that every app-specific database or protected area is included.

- Record the phone model and ColorOS version.
- Confirm the local backup completed and is listed.
- Check that the Backup folder and important media folders are present on the computer.
- Confirm Google device backup has a recent completion and Google Photos covers the folders you care about.
- Complete any separate backup or export required by critical apps.
- Connect the phone to power, or make sure its battery is above 40%, and use a working Wi-Fi or mobile network before starting the OTA update.
OPPO’s OTA update guidance says a backup is not required for an OTA update but recommends making one before updates. It also advises connecting to power or having more than 40% battery.
