Make at least two independent copies before installing HyperOS: a Xiaomi local backup copied to a computer or USB drive, plus cloud or app-specific backups for data the local copy may not restore. Xiaomi says an over-the-air (OTA) upgrade should not affect phone data, but its own safety guidance still recommends backing up first. Treat the update as normally safe, not as a guarantee against every failure, reset, hardware problem, or incompatible app.
The most dependable preparation combines four checks: an off-device Xiaomi local backup, Xiaomi Cloud synchronization for supported items, Google Android backup, and separate backups for apps such as WhatsApp, authenticators, banking tools, notes, and work applications.
What to back up before HyperOS
A HyperOS update replaces system software while attempting to preserve your user data. The important question is not simply whether an update is expected to erase the phone; it is whether every kind of data has a recoverable copy if the installation fails, the phone must be reset, or an app cannot restore its data afterward.

Xiaomi’s OTA guidance says, “The OTA upgrade will not affect phone data, but for the safety of the data, please make a backup before upgrading.” That statement appears in Xiaomi’s How to do OTA upgrade on Xiaomi phone?, whose illustrated steps refer to MIUI 12. Current HyperOS menus can use different names or locations, so use the labels shown on your model rather than assuming every phone has the same path.

- EXPAND YOUR STORAGE. Easily move files off your device, freeing up valuable space so you can store your favorite photos, movies, music, games, and more.
- Say goodbye to emailing photos between devices. Once they’re on your SanDisk Phone Drive, read speeds up to 100MB/s let you transfer files fast. (1 MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors. USB Type-C port with USB 3.2 Gen 1 support required.)
- AUTOMATIC BACKUP. Automatically back up your latest photos, videos, music, documents, and contacts with the SanDisk Memory Zone app. (Download and installation required. Set up automatic backup within app settings. See official SanDisk website for Memory Zone details.)
- DATA RECOVERY. Recover deleted files with the included RescuePRO Deluxe software.(Registration and download required; terms and conditions apply. See RescuePRO page on SanDisk site.)
- CONVENIENT DESIGN. Attach your drive to your keyring to help keep it secure so you can have storage wherever you are, whenever you need it.
- Local device backup: the broadest Xiaomi fallback and the option Xiaomi says can include app data.
- Xiaomi Cloud: a wireless copy of supported Xiaomi data, system items, and settings; it is not an app-data backup.
- Google Android backup: an account-associated copy of selected device data and settings, with app-by-app limitations.
- App-specific exports or cloud backups: essential when an app has its own account, encryption, or migration process.
- Manual file copies: needed for photos, downloads, recordings, documents, and other files that are not covered by the services you checked.
How the backup methods differ
Use the methods together rather than treating one service as a complete image of the phone. Xiaomi’s comparison of local and cloud backups says a local backup can include app data, while Xiaomi Cloud cannot back up app data.
| Method | What it is good at | Limitation to plan for | Best role before an update |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi local backup | Xiaomi says it can include app data and more items than a cloud backup | The copy must be moved off the phone; a factory reset permanently deletes a local backup left on the phone; third-party app data can still be incompatible | Broad local fallback |
| Xiaomi Cloud | Wireless synchronization of supported Xiaomi data and settings | Xiaomi says cloud backup does not include app data; third-party data may be omitted; availability and menus vary by region and software version | Additional copy of supported Xiaomi items |
| Google Android backup | Selected Android device data and settings associated with a Google Account | Not every app backs up or restores all settings and data; Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours; photos and videos use Google Photos | Additional Android-level cloud copy |
| App-specific backup | Can preserve data through the app’s own supported process, such as WhatsApp chats | Must be enabled and configured separately for each app and account | Protection for data general phone backups may omit |
1. Create a Xiaomi local backup and move it off the phone
A local backup is the most useful starting point because it gives you a device-side package that can contain more categories than Xiaomi Cloud. It is only a fallback once you have copied it somewhere else. Xiaomi warns that a factory reset deletes a local backup stored on the phone.
Start the built-in local backup
- Open Settings and use the settings search for backup if the menu is not obvious. Open the Xiaomi or system backup control that your model presents.
- Choose the local-device backup option and review the categories selected. Keep the categories you would need after a failed update, including the available system settings, messages, contacts, call history, and app-related data shown on your phone.
- Start the backup while the phone has sufficient battery and stable storage. Do not begin the HyperOS update until the backup screen indicates completion.
- Open the resulting backup location and verify that files were actually created. Xiaomi describes the folder as
MIUI-backup-AllBackup; folder names and display locations can differ on newer software.
The exact settings path, wording, and folder presentation vary among Xiaomi models and HyperOS versions. If a search for “backup” produces several choices, select the local backup control supplied by the phone rather than assuming a cloud-only option is equivalent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCopy the completed backup to a second device
- Connect the phone to a computer with a USB cable, unlock the phone, and choose the file-transfer mode if Android asks how the USB connection should work.
- Locate the completed backup folder, including
MIUI-backup-AllBackupwhere that label is used, and copy it to a clearly named folder on the computer. - Alternatively, copy the backup to a compatible USB drive using the phone’s file manager or the destination offered by the backup tool. Keep the drive disconnected after copying so an accidental reset cannot affect both copies.
- Wait for the transfer to finish. Open the destination on the computer or USB drive and confirm that the backup files are visible and that the copy size is not zero.
- Keep the external copy until you have updated, tested your important apps, and confirmed that your files and settings are present.
A local backup that remains only in internal storage is not an independent recovery copy. If the phone is factory-reset during troubleshooting, that on-phone copy is erased with everything else.
2. Check Xiaomi Cloud synchronization
Xiaomi Cloud is useful for supported synchronized data, but it should supplement—not replace—the local copy. Xiaomi’s list of supported categories includes apps and system or home-screen items such as desktop layouts, wallpapers, alarms, notification management, and other MIUI/system settings. The exact list can change with region, account status, and software version.

- Security & Warranty: Securely protects files using an advanced security software solution with 256-bit AES encryption. Backed by a Lexar 3-year limited warranty
- Open the Xiaomi Account controls, then open Xiaomi Cloud or the similarly named cloud-sync area shown on your phone.
- Review each available data category instead of assuming that enabling the service covers everything. Turn on synchronization for the items you actually need.
- Wait for synchronization to finish, then check the displayed status, last-sync time, or item count where the service provides one.
- Keep the Xiaomi Account email or phone number and password available. You may need the same account after an update or reset to retrieve synchronized items.
Xiaomi cautions in What can Mi cloud service back up? that some third-party app data may not back up or restore because of application permissions and compatibility. A cloud status showing that synchronization completed therefore confirms only the supported categories, not every record inside every app.
3. Run and verify Google Android backup
Google’s Android backup is a separate layer from Xiaomi Cloud. Google lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS among the data that can be associated with the Google Account. Photos and videos are handled through Google Photos rather than the device-backup list.
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, then All services, then Backup.
- Review the account selected for backup and read the categories and storage details displayed.
- Tap Back up now.
- Return to the backup screen and confirm that the status shows the selected data as saved. Do not rely on having pressed the button alone.
Google’s Back up or restore data on your Android device explains that a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. That is a maximum caveat, not a promise that every backup will take that long. Leave the phone connected to power and a reliable network long enough for a large backup to complete.
Google also warns that not every app backs up or restores all settings and data. An app can appear in a device backup while still requiring its own sign-in, export, encryption key, or migration procedure. Check the backup details for omissions rather than interpreting the Google backup as a complete clone.
4. Protect app data with each app’s own method
General device backups cannot guarantee recovery for apps that restrict their data, use end-to-end encryption, or store records only in an account-specific service. Make a short list of apps whose data would be difficult to recreate and handle them individually.

Open WhatsApp’s own backup controls and confirm that a recent cloud backup exists under the account you will use after the update. Google’s transfer guidance says WhatsApp chats and data restore requires WhatsApp backup to be turned on on the old device. Its instructions are in Copy apps & data from an Android to a new Android device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the displayed backup date before updating. If the date is old, run a new WhatsApp backup and wait for its completion message. Remember that restoring requires the appropriate phone number and account credentials; a generic Android backup status does not prove that WhatsApp’s own backup is current.
Authenticator, banking, work, and note-taking apps
- Authenticator apps: use the app’s account-transfer, export, or multi-device feature before changing system software. Save any recovery codes in a separate secure place.
- Banking and payment apps: confirm that you can sign in and complete their re-registration or device-verification process. Never assume that a copied app package includes security keys.
- Work and school apps: follow the organization’s enrollment or migration instructions, especially when mobile-device management is involved.
- Notes and recording apps: enable their account sync or export important notebooks and recordings to a readable file format.
For every critical app, identify where its data lives, how it is restored, and which account or credential is required. This prevents a successful phone-level restore from being mistaken for a successful app restore.
5. Copy photos, downloads, and documents manually
Review folders that are easy for automated services to miss: DCIM, Pictures, Movies, Download, Documents, screenshots, voice recordings, and files received through messaging apps. Copy irreplaceable files to a computer or USB drive, or confirm that the service you use has uploaded them and that they are visible from another device or its web interface.
Google identifies Google Photos as the place for photos and videos in its Android backup documentation. A photo that is merely visible in the phone’s gallery is not proof that it has uploaded. Open the photo service and check its backup status, then spot-check recent photos, videos, and large files.

Do not delete the phone originals until the external or cloud copy is confirmed. Keep at least one copy that is not dependent on the Xiaomi Account, Google Account, or a single app login.
Final checks before tapping the HyperOS update button
Use this sequence immediately before starting the update:
- Confirm the Xiaomi local backup reports completion.
- Confirm that the local backup folder has been copied to a computer or USB drive and is visible at the destination.
- Review Xiaomi Cloud’s synchronization status for the supported categories that matter to you.
- Open Google backup details, tap Back up now if needed, and wait for a saved or completed status. Allow up to 24 hours when Google indicates that a large backup is still processing.
- Check WhatsApp’s own backup date and complete the backup if it is stale.
- Complete export or migration steps for authenticator, banking, work, notes, and other high-value apps.
- Verify photos, downloads, documents, recordings, and screenshots have another copy.
- Make sure you know the Xiaomi Account, Google Account, app-account, and screen-lock credentials that recovery may request.
- Keep the phone sufficiently charged and connected to a stable network while the update downloads and installs.
After the update: verify before deleting backups
When HyperOS finishes installing, allow the phone to restart fully before judging the result. Unlock it with the existing screen lock, connect to the expected network, and check the items that would be hardest to replace.
- Open the Gallery or photo service and check recent photos and videos.
- Open Messages, Contacts, and the call-history screen.
- Launch WhatsApp and verify that its chats are present or that its own restore prompt offers the expected backup.
- Test authenticator codes, banking access, work enrollment, notes, recordings, and any app that stores offline data.
- Open the file manager and check Downloads, Documents, and other manually copied folders.
- Confirm that Xiaomi Cloud and Google services are signed in and synchronizing normally.
Keep the computer or USB copy until these checks pass and you have used the phone normally for a while. If an app is missing data, consult that app’s restore or export process first; do not erase the external local backup while investigating.

Troubleshooting backup problems
The local backup finishes, but no folder is visible
Use the phone’s file manager search for MIUI-backup-AllBackup and inspect the backup destination selected by the built-in tool. Connect the phone to a computer in file-transfer mode and search the internal storage. Because labels and locations vary across Xiaomi models and HyperOS releases, follow the location shown by your device rather than creating a new folder with the same name.

The computer copy stops or contains no files
Unlock the phone, reconnect the cable, select file transfer instead of charging-only mode, and copy the folder again. Wait for the operating system’s transfer notification to finish, then open the destination and verify that files are present. If the phone offers a USB drive destination, use that as a separate copy and verify it before unplugging.
Cloud synchronization shows warnings
Read the category-level warning. A warning about third-party app compatibility cannot be solved by repeatedly forcing Xiaomi Cloud synchronization; it means that app data needs the app’s own export or backup method. Check network access, account sign-in, and available cloud storage for supported categories, then record which items still require a manual copy.
Google backup remains in progress
Open Settings > Google > All services > Backup and inspect the details rather than assuming the process failed. Keep the phone on power and a reliable connection. Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours, and some app data may still be excluded even after the status completes.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →An app does not restore after the update
Sign in with the same account used for the app’s backup, check whether the app has a separate restore command, and use the export file or migration code you created before updating. A successful Xiaomi or Google device backup does not override an app’s permissions, encryption, or compatibility rules.
Bottom line
Before a HyperOS update, create a Xiaomi local backup, copy it off the phone, verify Xiaomi Cloud and Google backup status, and complete separate backups for WhatsApp and other critical apps. Add a manual copy of personal files, keep your credentials available, and retain the external backup until the updated phone has passed your own data and app checks.
