Godlike.Host offers hosted Space Engineers servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
To back up a Space Engineers dedicated server, stop it normally, then copy the complete world folder and the server configuration file from the dedicated server’s own save location. Keep that copy somewhere separate. To restore a world, stop the server again, preserve the currently loaded files, replace the live world files with the backup, and restart. Check both AppData and ProgramData because installations and community reports show more than one possible save location.
What a complete backup contains
A usable backup has two parts:
- The entire world folder, including its saves and world-specific settings.
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg, the dedicated-server configuration file used by the installation.
Copying only a local Steam save, a single XML file, or a screenshot of the settings window is not a complete dedicated-server backup. The dedicated server maintains its own save directory, so the source for a backup should be the files that this server actually loads.
Before replacing anything during a restore, make a second copy of the current live world. That gives you a way back if the backup is from the wrong server, the wrong date, or a different configuration.
Before you touch the files
- Tell players when the server will stop and how long the maintenance window should last.
- Make sure you can identify the server’s installation and the world it normally loads.
- Prepare a destination outside the live save directory, such as a dated folder on another drive or a protected storage location.
- Do not edit, move, or overwrite save files while the server process is still running.
A normal shutdown writes the current world before the process exits. A forced stop can skip that save. The dedicated-server guidance specifically warns that the /f flag kills the server without saving, so use it only when the server is hung and a normal stop is impossible.

Find the dedicated server’s save directory
The exact path depends on how the server was installed, and the available guidance is not completely consistent. Check the locations below rather than assuming that the local Steam client’s save folder is the one in use.

There is a practical reason to check both AppData and ProgramData: a community report found a duplicate save under ProgramData that the server continued loading after an AppData copy had been edited. If a restore appears to do nothing, you may have changed a copy that is not the active one.

Search the dedicated-server directory and confirm which copy changes with the installation you are operating. Back up the configuration file that belongs to the active server, not an unrelated copy left by an old installation.

Back up a running server safely
- Announce the stop. Give connected players time to leave and state that the world will be unavailable while files are copied.
- Stop the server normally. Use the server’s regular shutdown control or console command and wait for the process to finish. Do not use
/funless the process is unresponsive; that forced-stop option does not save the world first. - Confirm that the process has exited. Do not copy files while the dedicated-server process is still writing them.
- Open the dedicated save directory. Start with
%AppData%RoamingSpaceEngineersDedicatedSaves, then checkProgramDataSpaceEngineersDedicatedand the SteamCMD installation’sTempContentpath if applicable. - Identify the active world folder. Use the folder the server normally loads, not the numbered Steam user-ID directory around it when you are working from a local world migration. The world folder itself is the item that must be copied.
- Copy the complete world folder. Preserve every file and subfolder. Do not copy only files that look like progress data.
- Copy
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. If more than one copy exists, record which path the active installation uses and include that file with the backup. - Place the copies in a dated backup folder. A useful name includes the server or world name and the date and time, for example
SurvivalWorld-2026-10-14-2300. Keep the world folder and configuration file together. - Keep a second copy. Store it on a different disk or system when possible. A backup in the same folder as the live save is vulnerable to the same accidental deletion or disk failure.
- Restart the server and check the world. Confirm that the expected world loads and that players can see their normal bases, inventories, and settings before declaring the backup job complete.
The copy should be made after a clean shutdown because the normal exit is the point at which the current world is saved. If the server had to be killed forcibly, treat the resulting files as potentially older than the last player activity and make a note of that limitation in the backup name.
Restore a world from a file backup
Restoring is a replacement operation. The backup’s files must be copied into the live world folder, and the existing files should be preserved before they are replaced.
- Stop the server cleanly. Wait until the process has exited. A restore performed while the server is running can be overwritten when it saves or can leave a mixed set of old and new files.
- Locate the active live world. Use the same AppData, ProgramData, or SteamCMD path you identified during backup. If there are duplicate folders, use the one the server actually loads.
- Download or copy the current live files aside. Save the current world folder and configuration under a separate name before changing them. This is your rollback copy if the selected backup is unsuitable.
- Open the backup world folder. Select its contents, not merely the outer dated backup folder.
- Copy the backup contents into the live world folder. Allow Windows to merge folders and replace files when prompted. The restore guidance used by hosting control panels describes this as copying every file from the selected backup over the current world files.
- Restore the matching configuration file. Replace the active server’s
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgwith the backed-up version when the configuration is part of the recovery you intend to reproduce. If you deliberately need the current server settings, retain the current configuration instead and document that choice. - Start the server. Watch the startup output and confirm that the intended world, settings, and recent progress appear.
- Have a player perform a functional check. Verify a known base, a recent inventory or vehicle, and the expected server settings. Stop again and restore the pre-restore copy if the result is not the intended world.
Do not delete the rollback copy immediately. Keep it until the restored world has been checked and players have confirmed that the correct date and state were recovered.

Using a host’s backup and restore controls
If the server is managed through a hosting control panel, use that provider’s own backup and restore workflow first. Host documentation describes two distinct restore paths: an in-game restore script that copies all files from a selected backup folder over the current world, and a separate control-panel restore function. Their labels and permissions can differ, so follow the panel’s current instructions rather than assuming that an in-game command performs the same operation as a panel restore.
Before selecting a restore point, download or otherwise preserve the current files if the panel offers that option. A restore that replaces the live world without a current copy can remove progress made since the selected backup.
Migrate a local world to a dedicated server
For a move from a local game to a dedicated server, copy the world folder itself. Do not copy the numbered Steam ID folder that contains or surrounds it as though that ID were the world.

- Stop the local game and close the dedicated server if it is already running.
- Find the local world folder and identify the folder representing the world you want to move.
- Copy that world folder into the dedicated server’s active save directory.
- Start the dedicated-server configuration and select or point it at the copied world using the controls available in your current installation.
- Check the resulting world in-game before allowing regular players to connect.
A community helper advises that the world’s sandbox configuration and the main dedicated-server configuration should agree after a move. Treat that as an operational check rather than a guarantee: compare the settings that matter to your server and correct mismatches before opening the server to players.
Configuration and loading caveats
Do not assume a LoadWorld setting exists
No confirmed documentation in the available material establishes a LoadWorld key in the configuration file or as a launch argument. Do not add one based on examples from another game or an old forum post.
What -ignorelastsession is reported to do
The launch argument -ignorelastsession is reported to ignore the last automatic save and use the values in the configuration. The report is not current primary documentation, so treat it as a troubleshooting option to verify against the version and launcher you operate, not as a universal restore command.

“Saved Worlds” in the configuration window
A community thread describes a Saved Worlds option as the way to choose which world loads, while another player reports that it stores settings rather than game progress. Because those accounts conflict, use the option only after confirming its effect on your installation with a disposable copy or a known test world.
When the restored world does not appear
The server loads the old world
- Stop the server again and verify that you replaced the folder under the active save path, not a duplicate under another installation.
- Check both
%AppData%RoamingSpaceEngineersDedicatedSavesandProgramDataSpaceEngineersDedicated. - If the server is installed through SteamCMD, check its installation-directory
TempContentpath. - Confirm that the copied world folder is the folder itself, not an outer numbered Steam ID directory.
The server starts with unexpected settings
- Compare the active
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfgwith the one saved alongside the backup. - Check whether the backup configuration was stored in AppData or inside the world folder, since installations and community reports place it differently.
- Compare the world sandbox configuration with the dedicated configuration after a migration.
The backup is missing recent activity
- Determine whether the server was shut down normally before the backup.
- If
/fwas used, assume the final automatic save may not have been written. - Try an older cleanly shut-down backup rather than repeatedly overwriting the same restore target.
A restore was performed while the server was online
Stop the server, preserve the current files, and repeat the replacement from the beginning. Files copied while the process is active can be overwritten by the server’s next save, leaving a mixture of states that is difficult to diagnose.
How to make backups dependable
Use a repeatable naming and retention scheme instead of keeping one anonymous copy. Record the world name, the installation path used, the shutdown time, and whether the stop was normal or forced. Keep at least one copy separate from the machine that runs the server, and do not remove the pre-restore rollback copy until the restored world has been tested.
On every backup, include both the world folder and SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. On every restore, perform the same sequence: stop, preserve the current files, replace the live world contents, restore the intended configuration, restart, and verify in-game. Consistency matters more than a complicated schedule because it prevents the two most common recovery errors: backing up a folder the server does not use and restoring over the only copy of the current world.
Backup and restore checklist
- Before backup: players notified; normal shutdown requested; process fully stopped.
- Locations checked: AppData save path; ProgramData path; SteamCMD
TempContentpath where applicable. - Files copied: complete world folder and the active
SpaceEngineers-Dedicated.cfg. - Storage: dated folder and a second copy outside the live save directory.
- Before restore: server stopped; current world and configuration preserved.
- Restore: backup contents copied into the active world folder; replacement confirmed; intended configuration selected.
- After restore: server started; correct world and recent progress checked; rollback copy retained until verification is complete.
Bottom line
A reliable Space Engineers server backup is a cleanly stopped server’s complete world folder plus its dedicated configuration file, stored in more than one place. A reliable restore is the reverse done cautiously: stop first, save the current files, replace the active world with the backup, restart, and verify that the server is loading the folder you actually changed.
