Back up a Galaxy phone in layers before unlocking its bootloader: run Google’s Android backup, make a Samsung Smart Switch copy to a computer or compatible USB drive, export irreplaceable files so they can be opened independently, and complete each app’s own migration procedure. Assume that unlocking will factory-reset the phone, and do not proceed until you have checked the exact model, region, carrier variant and ROM instructions.
Why a custom-ROM backup must be more than one tap
Unlocking a bootloader is a destructive boundary. Android Open Source Project security guidance states: “To prevent unauthorized access to your personal data, unlocking the bootloader will also delete all personal data from your device (a “factory data reset”).” Treat that as the planning assumption even if a guide for your particular Galaxy describes a different sequence. The exact unlock mechanism, supported models and flashing steps vary by handset and software.
A backup indicator is not the same thing as a restorable image of the phone. Google says that not every app can back up or restore all of its data. Samsung says Smart Switch cannot back up data held in an app’s private storage. A Smart Switch archive is therefore not a bootable clone, and a Google account backup is not a guarantee that every app will reopen with its previous state.

- Account backup: Google backup for eligible apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS, plus Google’s own categories such as Photos when enabled.
- Samsung backup: Samsung Cloud for the Samsung categories available on your model and in your country.
- Local backup: Smart Switch on Windows or Mac, or Smart Switch to compatible USB, SSD or microSD storage.
- File copy: A separately browsable copy of photos, videos, downloads, documents and recordings.
- App exports: The official migration or export procedure for authenticators, encrypted messengers, password managers, banking apps and any other app whose local data cannot be recreated.
Keep at least one copy away from the phone. Verify that the copies are current and that representative files can actually be opened before you unlock anything.

Inventory the data that would hurt to lose
Start with an inventory rather than a backup button. A written list makes gaps visible when a service restores only account-backed data.
Make a personal-data checklist
- Camera photos and videos, screenshots, screen recordings and edited exports.
- Downloads, documents, PDFs, scanned receipts, music files and files stored in messaging-app folders.
- Voice recordings, notes and locally stored calendars or contacts.
- Call history, SMS and MMS, and any RCS history that your messaging setup supports.
- Authenticator accounts, passkeys, recovery codes and security keys. Identify which services offer an export or transfer route.
- Message histories in apps that use end-to-end encryption or local databases.
- Banking, government-ID, workplace and digital-wallet apps that may require device re-enrollment.
- Game saves, project files, downloaded maps, offline playlists and other data that is not synchronized to an account.
- Secure Folder items and any app data that exists only inside it.
Confirm what is already synchronized
Open the relevant cloud service on another device or in its web interface and confirm that recent items are present. A sync icon on the Galaxy only shows that an operation was attempted; it does not prove that the account contains every local file. Check the newest photo, the latest note and a recent contact, not just the presence of an account.
Check free space and power
Charge the phone, use a reliable Wi-Fi connection for cloud operations, and check free space on the computer or external drive. A local destination must have room for the selected content plus temporary files. If you are using a USB-C flash drive or SSD, confirm that the phone supports the required USB-OTG connection and that you have the correct adapter or cable.
Run and inspect Google’s Android backup
Google’s Android Help documentation lists apps and app data, call history, contacts, device settings and SMS/MMS among the categories that may be included. Google Messages can back up RCS messages in supported configurations, and Google Photos handles photos and videos when you use its backup feature. Availability and exact labels can differ by Android release and device.
Start the backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, then All services, then Backup. On some releases the path is shown simply as Settings → Google → Backup.
- Review the account and the categories shown on the Backup screen.
- Tap Back up now and leave the phone on power and Wi-Fi while it runs.
- Open Google Photos separately if you use it, and verify that its photo and video backup status is current.
Allow for the backup delay
Google says a Google One backup can take up to 24 hours. Do not interpret the first progress message as completion. Return to the Backup screen after the operation and check that the saved date and category status have advanced. If the date is old, keep the phone connected and investigate account, network or storage warnings before proceeding.
Understand what Google cannot promise
Google explicitly warns that not all apps back up or restore all settings and data. An app can appear in the backup list yet omit its private database, downloaded content, login session or encryption keys. A restored app may therefore open as a new installation. Treat this layer as a way to recover eligible account-backed information and settings, not as a complete snapshot of the old system.

Use Samsung Cloud for the Samsung data it supports
Samsung Cloud can cover selected Samsung categories, including items such as call history, messages, contacts, calendar, settings, home-screen layout, apps and voice recordings. The exact list depends on the Galaxy model, One UI version, country and carrier. Samsung’s support information also says files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Check the categories on your phone
- Open Settings and select your Samsung account area.
- Open Samsung Cloud and choose the backup or data-management option shown for your software version.
- Review each category and its most recent date rather than assuming that every category is enabled.
- Start a backup and wait for completion. Reopen the screen to confirm the new date and any warnings.
Do not use Samsung Cloud as the only copy of large videos, downloaded files or documents. A category can be unavailable on one model and present on another, and a cloud copy that depends on signing in again does not replace a separate file archive.
Make a Smart Switch backup on a computer
Smart Switch for Windows or Mac creates a local backup of supported phone content. Samsung’s content list includes many personal categories and multimedia formats, but it also identifies exclusions. In particular, data in an app’s private storage cannot be backed up. Some synchronized account items are excluded because they are expected to return after you sign in.
Computer workflow
- Install the current Smart Switch application for Windows or Mac from Samsung’s official support channel.
- Connect the Galaxy with a USB data cable, unlock the phone and approve any USB or data-access prompt.
- Open Smart Switch and choose Backup. Review the categories it can select for this connected device.
- Start the backup and keep the cable connected until Smart Switch reports completion. Avoid using the phone or allowing the computer to sleep during the operation.
- Record the backup date and the computer location. If the computer is shared, protect the backup with the computer’s normal access controls.
- Disconnect safely, then reconnect or browse the destination as appropriate to confirm that the backup exists.
What the computer archive means
A Smart Switch backup is intended to be restored through Smart Switch; its files are not necessarily a set of ordinary folders that can all be opened directly on a PC. It is useful as a local recovery source for supported Samsung content, but it is not a full system image and cannot preserve excluded private app data.
Back up to USB, SSD or microSD when supported
Samsung documents Smart Switch transfers to external storage such as a USB flash drive or portable SSD. A USB-OTG adapter may be required, depending on the phone and drive connector. A microSD route is available only on models and cards that support it. External storage gives you a copy that is physically separate from the phone, but it does not change Smart Switch’s content exclusions.
External-storage workflow
- Choose a USB drive, SSD or supported microSD card with enough free capacity for the selected backup.
- Connect it directly or through a compatible OTG adapter. Confirm that the phone recognizes the storage and that the connector supports data, not charging only.
- Open Smart Switch, choose the external-storage backup or transfer option, and select the content offered for your device.
- Start the operation and keep the phone powered until it reports completion.
- Use the phone’s eject or unmount control before disconnecting the drive. Removing it while data is being written can corrupt the backup.
- Reconnect the storage and check that the Smart Switch backup is still detected. For ordinary files copied separately, open sample files from the drive.
Choose storage realistically
A larger drive solves a capacity problem, not an app-data problem. Private app storage remains excluded, and protected or account-bound content may still require the app’s own recovery process. Keep the external copy in a different physical location from the phone when the data is irreplaceable.

Copy ordinary files so they are independently usable
Do not leave your only photos, videos and documents inside a cloud account or a Smart Switch archive. Use a computer or external drive to copy folders that you can browse without a Samsung or Google restore tool.
Folders worth checking
DCIMfor camera media.Pictures, including screenshots and edited images.Movies,MusicandRecordingswhere your apps store media.DownloadandDocuments.- Export folders created by note, scanning, recording or messaging apps.
Folder names vary by app and Android version, so search the phone’s file manager for file types and recent dates as well as checking the common folders. Copy the files to the computer or external storage, then safely eject the destination.
Verify the copy instead of trusting the transfer dialog
- Reconnect the destination after ejecting it and confirm that the expected folder count and approximate size are present.
- Open representative small and large photos, a video, a PDF, a document and an audio recording from the destination.
- Check the newest and oldest files in each important folder.
- For irreplaceable material, make a second copy on another destination before unlocking.
This file copy preserves usable files, not app state, protected media, settings or a bootable Android installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHandle Secure Folder and app-specific data separately
Secure Folder
Samsung’s current US support guidance says Secure Folder data backup is no longer available. It describes Smart Switch as a possible transfer route, while stating that Secure Folder restore functionality is unavailable on Android 16 with One UI 8 or higher. The behavior is software-version-sensitive, so inspect the Secure Folder and Smart Switch options on your exact phone before wiping it.
Export anything Secure Folder or its apps allow you to export, copy permitted files outside the container, and keep an independent copy. Do not promise yourself that Secure Folder content will survive an unlock or a ROM change; encrypted container data and app credentials may not be recoverable through ordinary backups.
Authenticators and passkeys
For an authenticator, use its official account-transfer, encrypted-export or recovery-code process. Confirm that a second device or the service’s recovery route works before removing the old installation. Never paste seed phrases, recovery keys or one-time codes into a public document or an unprotected shared folder.

Encrypted messaging and password managers
Follow the application’s documented device-migration procedure. Some apps require the old phone to approve a transfer; others use an encrypted export protected by a password. A Google or Smart Switch restore may reinstall the application without restoring its local message database or secrets.

Expect device re-enrollment, identity checks or a new security key after installing a ROM. Downloaded films, books, music and other DRM-protected material may need to be downloaded again under the account’s terms. Confirm that you can sign in and complete recovery before starting the wipe.
Plan for restore compatibility before you flash
Google states that a backup made on a higher Android version cannot be restored to a phone running a lower Android version. A custom ROM may use a different Android release, vendor configuration or security model, so a successful backup does not guarantee a successful one-step restore.
- Write down the phone’s exact model number, regional or carrier variant, current Android version and One UI version.
- Record the Google and Samsung accounts used for backup, and verify that you know their passwords and can complete two-step verification without the old phone.
- Read the maintained installation instructions for the exact ROM build and model. Do not substitute instructions for a similarly named Galaxy.
- Check whether the ROM supports your modem, storage encryption, recovery method and required firmware base.
- Download any required ROM, recovery and firmware files before unlocking, and keep a copy of your backup away from the phone.
Android’s platform guidance explains the security reason for the wipe, but it does not establish that every Samsung model has an unlockable bootloader or exposes the same commands. Some regional or carrier variants may not support the assumed path. Use the ROM maintainer’s exact procedure rather than a universal command list.

Data checks
- Every irreplaceable folder has been copied to a computer or external drive.
- Representative files open from the copied destination after reconnecting it.
- Google Backup shows a recent saved date and the expected account.
- Google Photos, if used, contains the newest photos and videos.
- Samsung Cloud categories show a recent completion date where available.
- Smart Switch has completed on a computer or external destination, and the backup is detected afterward.
- Authenticator, encrypted-messenger, password-manager, banking and wallet migrations are complete or have a tested recovery path.
- Secure Folder content has been exported as far as the current software permits, with no assumption that it will restore.
Device and procedure checks
- The exact model, region and carrier variant match the ROM and bootloader instructions.
- You understand that unlocking may trigger a factory reset and that the process can make the phone temporarily unusable if the wrong files or steps are used.
- You have the account credentials, two-step verification methods and recovery codes needed after the wipe.
- The backup destinations are physically separate from the phone and have enough free space.
- The ROM instructions explain how to return to stock firmware or recover from a failed installation for this exact model.
Common mistakes and how to correct them
“Smart Switch finished, so every app is safe.”
Smart Switch excludes private app storage and other unsupported content. Correct this by running each app’s export or migration process and by preserving ordinary files separately.
