Make a fresh backup before installing a major One UI update, then verify that it finished and includes the data you actually need. The safest practical approach is to use Samsung Cloud or Google-account backup for cloud protection and Smart Switch for a separate copy on a computer or compatible external storage. These services cover different categories, and Samsung does not promise that every item on every Galaxy phone will be included.
What to do before you tap Install
A major One UI update normally preserves your phone’s contents, but no official Samsung guide gives a blanket guarantee for every model, carrier build, or update. Treat the backup as insurance rather than assuming the update will erase the phone or that an option shown in Settings has already protected your files.
- Connect to Wi‑Fi. Samsung recommends Wi‑Fi for Samsung Cloud backup and restore; mobile-data charges may apply if you use cellular data.
- Charge the phone. For Smart Switch transfers to a PC or Mac, Samsung’s current setup guidance says both devices should have at least 20% battery. More charge is preferable for a lengthy backup and update.
- Run a manual cloud backup. Use the available Samsung Cloud or Google-account backup path and wait for its completion message.
- Create a second, local copy when the data matters. Smart Switch can save a backup to a computer, compatible USB storage, or a microSD card on models that support it.
- Check the categories and status. Open the backup details, confirm the important categories were selected, and make sure the latest-backup time has changed.
- Handle app-specific data separately. Important chats, authenticator tokens, downloaded documents, and files in app-private storage may need that app’s own export or backup function.
Keep the local copy connected or stored safely until you have completed the update and checked the phone. Do not disconnect a USB cable while Smart Switch is transferring data; Samsung warns that interruption can cause data loss or device damage.

Samsung Cloud, Google-account backup, and Smart Switch are not interchangeable. The right choice depends on whether you need convenience, an independent copy, or protection for a particular category.

For irreplaceable photos, documents, or work files, use two different destinations. A cloud backup protects against a lost phone, while a local copy protects you if an account cannot be accessed or a cloud category is unavailable.
Back up to Samsung Cloud
Run the manual backup
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Choose Samsung Cloud.
- Tap Back up data.
- Select the categories you want to protect.
- Tap Back up now and leave the phone on Wi‑Fi until the completion message appears.
Menu names and the list of categories can differ by Galaxy model, One UI release, country, and carrier. Use the selection screen on your phone as the authority; do not assume that a category listed on another Galaxy is available on yours.
What Samsung Cloud may include
Samsung’s support documentation lists phone call and message history; contacts and calendars saved on the device; alarms, world clocks, and timers; accessibility and other settings; selected home-screen data; apps and Samsung app settings; and voice recordings. The exact selection is device-dependent.
Samsung states that files larger than 1 GB cannot be backed up to Samsung Cloud. Some large message files can also be left out. If a video, recording, archive, or document exceeds that limit, copy it to a computer or supported external storage instead.
Do not confuse backup with synchronization
Samsung Cloud synchronization and Samsung Cloud backup are separate features. Samsung lists sync items such as Samsung Calendar, Samsung Notes, Samsung Browser, Samsung Pass, and Samsung Health separately from the backup controls. Contacts and calendars configured with a Google account will not be synchronized by Samsung Cloud, so check which account owns those records before relying on Samsung’s service.

Why manual backup is better before an update
Samsung Cloud’s automatic backup requires the phone to be charging, the screen to be off, and a Wi‑Fi connection. Those conditions mean an automatic run may not have happened when you are ready to update. A manual Back up now action gives you a visible completion point. Still review the timestamp and categories afterward; pressing the button alone does not prove that every desired item was accepted.
Back up with your Google account
Samsung’s UK support instructions describe this route for Android 12 and older menu paths. Current One UI builds may use different labels, but the goal is the same: start the backup from the Google-account section and confirm that it completed.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Choose Google Drive.
- Tap Back up data.
- Tap Back up now.
- If prompted about Google Photos, choose whether to grant the requested permission and verify that the intended Google account is selected.
Google-account backup is distinct from Samsung Cloud. It may preserve Google-managed device information, but the categories shown depend on your software and account setup. Google Photos also has its own photo-backup controls; do not treat the existence of a Google account on the phone as proof that every picture or video is already uploaded.
Create a Smart Switch backup on a PC or Mac
Prepare the transfer
- Install the Smart Switch desktop application on the computer.
- Use a reliable USB cable capable of data transfer, not only charging.
- Charge the Galaxy and computer-connected device to at least 20%, as Samsung’s current setup guidance specifies.
- Confirm that the computer has enough free storage for the selected categories.
Run the backup
- Open Smart Switch on the PC or Mac.
- Connect the Galaxy phone by USB and unlock it if the phone asks for permission.
- In Smart Switch, choose Backup.
- Select the data categories you want to copy.
- Start the backup and wait for Smart Switch’s completion message before touching the cable.
- Review the reported result and note where the backup was stored.
The Smart Switch phone app is preinstalled on Galaxy models according to Samsung’s Singapore guidance; the computer application is downloaded separately. Available data types and transfer behavior can vary. Samsung specifically warns that third-party messenger data might not transfer, so use the messenger’s own export or cloud-backup setting for chats you cannot replace.
Use Smart Switch with external storage
Smart Switch can use compatible USB storage and, on supported Galaxy models, a microSD card as the destination. This is useful when you want a local copy but do not have a computer.

- Connect a compatible USB storage device through the phone’s supported port or insert a supported microSD card.
- Open Smart Switch and choose the backup option.
- Select the categories to copy and check the destination’s free capacity.
- Start the backup and wait for the completion notice before removing the storage.
- Keep the storage device separate from the phone until the update is finished.
Do not assume that every Galaxy has a microSD slot or accepts every USB-C drive. Check the specific model’s port and storage support. Samsung notes that insufficient external-storage space may require you to deselect backup items. A USB-C flash drive is optional, not a requirement; use one only when its connector, capacity, and file system are compatible with the phone.
Verify that the backup is usable
Verification is the step most often skipped. Before starting One UI installation, perform these checks:
- Timestamp: Samsung Cloud, Google-account backup, or Smart Switch shows a completion time from the current session.
- Scope: The categories you care about are selected, rather than merely the categories offered by default.
- Capacity: The cloud route did not exclude files over 1 GB, and the computer or external drive has enough free space.
- Independent files: Open the computer or external-storage destination and confirm that a backup folder or archive was created.
- High-value data: Copy especially important documents, recordings, or photos separately if they are too large, stored in an app, or absent from the category list.
- Account access: You know the Samsung or Google account credentials needed to restore a cloud backup.
A backup can report success while omitting an unsupported category. Read the details rather than treating a green completion message as a guarantee that every byte on the phone was copied.
Data that may need its own backup
Third-party chats
Smart Switch may not transfer data from some third-party messaging apps. Open each important messenger and look for its own chat-export, cloud-backup, or transfer function. Follow the app’s instructions and verify the resulting archive or account status before updating.
Large files
Samsung Cloud excludes files larger than 1 GB. Move large videos, recordings, compressed archives, and project files to a computer or compatible external storage. Check the copied file from the destination rather than relying only on a transfer count.

Authenticator and security data
Some authenticator applications keep secrets in protected app storage that a general device backup may not restore. Use the app’s account-transfer or export process, save recovery codes, and ensure you can sign in after the update.
Downloads and app-private documents
Review the Downloads folder and any work or editing apps that store files internally. If a file does not appear in the backup category list, copy it manually to a computer or supported drive.

Before and after the One UI installation
Before starting
- Leave the phone on reliable Wi‑Fi and connect it to power.
- Finish the manual backup and retain the local copy, if you made one.
- Make sure you know the screen lock and Samsung or Google account credentials.
- Remove nothing from the backup destination until the phone has restarted successfully.
After the phone restarts
Unlock the phone, allow system apps time to finish updating, and check your highest-priority data first: contacts, recent photos, messages, calendar entries, notes, recordings, and authenticator access. If something is missing, do not overwrite or delete the local Smart Switch backup; use the appropriate Samsung Cloud, Google, or Smart Switch restore path while that copy is still available.
Troubleshooting common backup problems
Samsung Cloud does not show the categories you expect
Category availability is tied to the model, One UI version, country, and carrier. Check whether the item belongs to a Google account, Samsung Cloud sync, or an app-specific service instead. Copy unsupported files manually.

Reconnect to Wi‑Fi, plug in the phone, turn the screen off, and retry the manual backup. Check available cloud and device space. Large files cannot be added to Samsung Cloud, so move them to local storage.

Smart Switch cannot connect
Unlock the phone, accept any USB permission prompt, try a different data-capable cable or USB port, and confirm that Smart Switch is installed on the computer. Do not remove the cable during an active transfer.
External storage reports insufficient space
Check the drive or card’s free capacity and deselect nonessential categories, as Samsung’s setup guidance suggests. For the most important files, make a smaller verified copy first, then use another destination for the remainder.
A chat or app did not appear after restore
General backups do not guarantee restoration of every app-private or third-party messenger record. Use that app’s own restore or import procedure and keep its export file or cloud backup available.
Bottom line
Before a major One UI update, run and verify a fresh backup rather than relying on an old automatic run. Samsung Cloud is convenient but excludes files over 1 GB and varies by device and region; Google-account backup is a separate cloud route; and Smart Switch supplies the independent local copy that is most useful for large files and recovery. For data you cannot replace, use two destinations and back up critical apps separately.
