The safest sequence is: verify a current Google backup on your Pixel, confirm that Google Photos and your contacts service have synchronized, make a separate WhatsApp backup, then copy data directly from the Pixel during the new phone’s setup. Afterward, check messages, contacts, photos, files, calendars, app sign-ins, WhatsApp, and mobile service before erasing the old phone.

Android’s backup and transfer tools cover much of a phone’s data, but not every app, account, setting, or messaging database. The steps below show what to verify, what to copy, and what needs separate handling.

1. Prepare both phones before you start

Charge, connect, and unlock the Pixel

  • Charge both phones and connect them to Wi-Fi. Keep them close together for the entire transfer.
  • Make sure you can unlock the Pixel with its PIN, pattern, or password; the new phone may request it during pairing.
  • Sign in to the Google Account you intend to use on the new phone. Google recommends signing in and backing up the old phone first for the most complete transfer. Google’s Android switching guide explains the preparation requirements.

Check Android versions and available storage

Look at the Android version on both devices in Settings > About phone. A Google Account backup made on a newer Android version cannot be restored to a phone running an older Android version. If the new phone is behind, update it before relying on cloud restoration. Also make sure the new phone has enough free storage for the apps, media, and files you select.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Verify the Pixel’s Google backup

Review the backup status and contents

  1. On the Pixel, open Settings > Google services > Backup.
  2. Read the date and status of the latest backup.
  3. Open Backup details and review the categories included.
  4. If the backup is old or incomplete, start a new backup while the Pixel is on Wi-Fi and power.

Google describes this feature as backing up “data and settings from your phone to your Google Account.” Android backup can include supported app data, call history, contacts, device settings, and SMS/MMS, but the exact contents depend on the phone, Android version, and each app’s support. Some backup data is end-to-end encrypted with the Pixel’s screen lock, so keep that lock available when restoring. Pixel backup instructions and Android backup and restore guidance describe the supported categories and limitations.

Do not treat the device backup as your photo library

Photos and videos synchronize through Google Photos separately from the device backup. Open Google Photos on the Pixel, tap your profile picture, and check the backup status. Browse recent pictures and videos from another device or the web to confirm that the newest items are actually present in the account you will use on the new phone. A completed device backup alone does not prove that every photo or video has uploaded. Google’s Pixel backup page distinguishes photo and video sync from device backup.

Check where your contacts and calendars live

Contacts saved to your Google Account can sync to the new phone when you sign in. Contacts or calendars synchronized through a work account, a carrier account, or another service follow that service’s own sync process instead. Open the relevant Contacts and Calendar apps and verify recent entries on the service’s web or account view. Export or use the provider’s transfer method for anything that is not in Google’s account. The Android copy guide specifically warns that non-Google accounts and contacts or calendars synced to other services may not transfer automatically. Android’s copy-data guidance lists these exclusions.

3. Make a separate WhatsApp backup

WhatsApp has its own backup and restore path; the standard Android backup does not guarantee that WhatsApp chats and media will be available. On the Pixel, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup, choose the Google Account and backup frequency you want, and run a current backup. Wait for the completion indication before beginning setup on the new phone.

During WhatsApp setup on the new phone, use the same phone number. If you restore from cloud storage, use the same Google Account that holds the backup. WhatsApp may offer either a direct transfer from the old phone or a cloud restore. Follow the option shown on screen, and check both recent messages and expected media afterward. Google explicitly says a successful WhatsApp transfer is not guaranteed, so do not erase the Pixel until you have inspected the restored chats. Google’s WhatsApp transfer instructions cover the available flows.

4. Inventory data that may need separate action

Before opening the new phone’s setup wizard, make a short list of anything important that is stored outside ordinary Google backup. This prevents a missing category from being discovered only after the Pixel has been wiped.

  • Work-managed content: A company-managed profile or device may restrict ordinary backup and transfer. Ask your administrator which account or management process must be used.
  • Non-Google accounts: Email, contacts, calendars, notes, files, and app data belonging to another provider may require that provider’s own sign-in or export.
  • Apps that do not use Android backup: Some apps keep private databases on their servers or in local storage and do not participate in Android’s backup system. Check each important app for an in-app export, cloud-sync, or migration feature.
  • Authentication apps and passkeys: Confirm how each service restores credentials. Some require a QR transfer, a recovery code, or a fresh sign-in rather than a normal app reinstall.
  • Ringtones and specialized settings: Custom ringtones and certain phone settings are listed by Google as possible omissions.
  • Local files: Files in Downloads or app-specific folders can be copied during setup when supported, but open the file manager afterward and verify folders that matter to you.

Google’s Pixel transfer page lists common categories such as Google Account data, passwords and passkeys, settings, calendar events, text messages and attachments, files and folders, call history, photos and videos, contacts, WhatsApp chat history, apps, audio files, and custom-photo wallpaper. Whether a category appears depends on the source and destination phones, Android versions, Google app availability, and the individual app. Manufacturer-specific app data may not transfer. Pixel’s transfer reference shows the category-by-category qualifications.

5. Copy data during the new Android phone’s setup

Use direct phone-to-phone transfer when the Pixel is available

  1. Turn on the new phone and begin setup.
  2. When asked whether to copy apps and data, choose the option to copy from an Android device.
  3. Follow the pairing or QR-code instructions. Keep the Pixel unlocked and approve the connection.
  4. Enter the Pixel’s PIN, pattern, or password when requested.
  5. Choose the categories and apps to copy, then leave both phones connected until the process finishes.
  6. Allow selected apps to download from the Play Store, and leave the new phone on Wi-Fi while downloads complete.

Labels and the exact selection screen vary by manufacturer. Google says copying can take from a few minutes to more than an hour, depending on the amount of data. Do not interrupt the phones simply because the screen appears idle; large photo libraries and app installations can continue in the background. The Android switching walkthrough and Pixel’s transfer instructions show the current setup flow.

Choose a cable or Wi-Fi connection

Method What you need Best use Limitations
USB cable A cable that supports data and connectors compatible with both phones; an adapter may be needed. Use when you want a direct wired connection and have the correct accessories. A charge-only cable, incorrect adapter, or loose connection will prevent copying.
Wireless Both phones charged, nearby, unlocked, and connected as directed by the setup screens. Use when you do not have a suitable cable or want to avoid adapters. Transfer time depends on the amount of data and the wireless conditions.

Both methods are documented. Google’s general Android instructions recommend the cable method when available, while Pixel instructions support wired and wireless copying. A cable is optional, not a requirement for every transfer. Android’s copy guide explains cable requirements and Pixel’s guide describes the wireless option.

6. If the Pixel is unavailable: restore a Google Account backup

If the old phone is lost, damaged, or already inaccessible, choose the restore-from-backup option during new-phone setup and sign in to the Google Account used on the Pixel. This route depends on a backup that completed before the Pixel became unavailable. Select the most recent backup and review the categories offered by the new phone.

Cloud restoration is not identical to direct copying. It is constrained by Android-version compatibility, app support, account type, and the backup’s contents. A backup from a higher Android version cannot be restored to a lower-version device. If you skipped the copy screen, note that Google says device transfer may be offered only once and recommends doing it during setup; consult the new phone’s manufacturer instructions for its recovery options rather than assuming the wizard can be reopened later. Google’s Android copy help documents the one-time setup limitation.

7. Verify every important category before erasing the Pixel

Set aside time for a deliberate inspection instead of assuming that a completed progress bar means the migration is complete.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Messages: Open the messaging app and check recent conversations, attachments, and any threads you need for work or records.
  • Contacts: Search for several recent and older contacts, including entries stored under different accounts.
  • Photos and videos: Open Google Photos, check recent uploads, and inspect albums, favorites, and locally stored media that was not part of cloud sync.
  • Files: Open the file manager and check Downloads, documents, recordings, and folders created by important apps.
  • Calendar: Confirm upcoming and recurring events from every account you use.
  • Apps: Launch essential apps, complete sign-ins, and check in-app data. An installed app icon does not prove that its private database transferred.
  • Passwords and passkeys: Test a few critical accounts and complete any security prompts or device approvals.
  • Settings: Recheck notification behavior, accessibility options, VPN profiles, alarms, and other settings that matter to your daily use.
  • WhatsApp: Open chats, inspect recent messages, and verify expected photos, videos, and voice notes using the separate backup or transfer path.

Keep the Pixel powered on and intact until these checks pass. This is a practical safeguard because Google documents transfer omissions and carrier-dependent activation; it is not a claim that Google requires you to retain the old device for a particular period.

8. Move and test the SIM or eSIM

Physical SIM

If you use a physical SIM, power down both phones when the manufacturer instructs you to remove or insert it, place the card in the new phone, and wait for network registration. Make a test call and send a text before relying on the new device.

eSIM

Automatic eSIM transfer depends on operator support and compatible devices. Google lists Android 12 or later, current Google Play services, and a screen lock as requirements for automatic transfer. Start the transfer from the new phone’s mobile-network setup screen and follow the verification prompts. If the option is missing or activation fails, contact your operator for a QR code or manual activation process. Google’s eSIM transfer help explains the carrier dependency.

After activation, turn off Wi-Fi briefly and place a test call, send an SMS, receive a call, and check mobile data. Do not cancel the old line or erase the Pixel until the new phone has working service and you have confirmed that your number is correct.

9. Troubleshoot common transfer problems

The new phone does not find the Pixel

  • Unlock the Pixel and keep both screens awake during pairing.
  • Confirm both phones are charged, nearby, and connected as the setup screens request.
  • Restart both devices and repeat the pairing flow.
  • If using a cable, replace any charge-only cable, check both connectors, and try the required adapter.

The cable is connected but no data copies

Disconnect and reconnect with a known data-capable cable. Make sure the cable fits both ports and that the adapter supports data, not only charging. If the phones still do not recognize each other, use the wireless method or follow the destination manufacturer’s transfer utility.

Some apps or their data are missing

Check that the new phone is signed in to the correct Google Account and connected to Wi-Fi, then allow Play Store downloads to finish. For a missing database, open the app’s help or account settings on the Pixel and look for its own export or cloud-restore process. Android cannot restore data from an app that does not participate in Android backup, and manufacturer-specific app data may have separate rules.

Contacts or calendars are incomplete

Identify the account that owns the missing item. Turn on synchronization for that account on the new phone, then refresh the relevant app. If the data belongs to a non-Google service, install that service’s app and sign in, or use its documented export and import tools.

WhatsApp chats are absent

Verify the phone number and Google Account match the backup. Return to WhatsApp’s restore prompt if it is still available, and check that the Pixel’s backup completed before switching. If the direct transfer did not work, try the documented cloud-restore route. Do not delete the Pixel’s WhatsApp data until you have exhausted the available restore choices; Google does not guarantee every WhatsApp transfer will succeed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

eSIM activation fails

Check that the new phone meets the Android, Google Play services, and screen-lock requirements, then retry on a reliable Wi-Fi connection. If automatic transfer remains unavailable, the operator must provision the eSIM manually. A test call and mobile-data check are the proof that activation completed.

10. Decide which transfer method fits your situation

Situation Use this first Why
The Pixel is present and unlockable Direct copy during setup, by cable or Wi-Fi It can copy categories directly from the source and lets you choose what to bring over.
The Pixel is unavailable but a recent backup exists Google Account restore during setup It can recover supported data without the old device, subject to Android-version and app limitations.
Photos or videos are important Verify Google Photos separately Photo and video synchronization is separate from the device backup.
WhatsApp history is important WhatsApp Chat backup and its own restore or transfer flow Android backup does not guarantee WhatsApp data, and Google warns that transfer success is not guaranteed.
Mobile number is on eSIM Use the setup transfer if offered, otherwise contact the operator Automatic transfer depends on carrier and device compatibility.

The most reliable plan is therefore layered: verify the Google backup, verify independent services, copy directly while the Pixel is available, restore app-specific data through its own workflow, and test the phone before wiping the source.
