Back up your Pixel before you unlock its bootloader. Unlocking is the point at which your phone can be wiped, so do not begin the LineageOS procedure until you have checked your Google backup, copied irreplaceable files to a computer, and completed separate backups for apps whose data matters.
The exact installation procedure depends on the Pixel model and LineageOS device codename. The official instructions used for the examples below are for Google Pixel 4a (sunfish) running LineageOS 22.2; they are not a universal guide for every Pixel generation. Identify your own model first, then open its current LineageOS device page before changing any bootloader setting.
Why the backup must happen before bootloader unlocking
LineageOS installation normally requires an unlocked bootloader. The LineageOS Wiki installation instructions for the Pixel 4a (sunfish), LineageOS 22.2, state: “Warning: Unlocking the bootloader will erase all data on your device!” Treat that as a complete wipe of the phone’s user data, not as a warning limited to photos or downloaded files.

Once the wipe occurs, you may be able to restore some information from a Google account or from an app’s own service, but restoration is not guaranteed for every file, setting, account, message history, or private app database. A backup that exists only on the phone is not a backup against this operation.

There are three separate jobs:
- Cloud/device backup: review what Google has most recently saved and which categories are included.
- Independent file copy: copy personal files to a computer, and optionally to a second external destination.
- App-specific protection: use each important app’s export, sync, recovery, or migration procedure.
Completing all three gives you different restore paths. It also exposes gaps while the original Android installation is still available to check.
First identify your exact Pixel and its LineageOS page
Do not follow a Pixel 4a tutorial merely because you own another Pixel. Device codenames, supported build versions, partition layouts, firmware requirements, and installation sequences differ between models. A command or file intended for one device can be wrong for another.
- Open your phone’s Settings and About phone information. Record the marketing model, model number, Android version, and build information shown there.
- Check the model against the hardware information printed on the original packaging or device documentation if the Settings label is ambiguous.
- Open the LineageOS device list and select the page for your exact model and codename. Confirm that the page is current and that its supported LineageOS release matches the release you intend to install.
- Read that page’s backup and installation warnings before connecting the phone to a computer or enabling developer options.
The source used for this checklist is specifically the sunfish page for Pixel 4a and LineageOS 22.2. Use it to understand the risk and workflow, not as a substitute for your own model’s instructions.

Google’s Pixel Help guidance tells you to review the device backup details rather than assume that a backup is complete. The labels can vary by Android version, so use the backup area in Settings and open the detail screen associated with your Google account. Look for the most recent successful backup time and inspect the categories or data types listed there.
What to verify
- The phone is signed in to the Google account you intend to use after the wipe.
- The displayed backup is recent enough to include your latest contacts, settings changes, and other information you care about.
- The detail view lists the data categories you expect. A listed category is evidence that Google backs up that type; it is not proof that every item inside the category will return.
- The backup is not reporting an error, a paused job, or a date that predates important changes.
If the status is old or incomplete, leave the phone connected to power and a reliable network, run the available backup action, and check the detail screen again. Do not proceed based only on a notification that a backup exists. The important question is what the backup contains and when it last completed.

Why a Google backup is not enough by itself
Google backup is a cloud restore path, not a byte-for-byte image of the phone. It may cover selected device settings, account information, or app-related data while excluding particular files, app databases, downloads, or content that an app keeps locally. The backup detail screen is therefore a boundary: anything not shown there needs another plan.
Make a separate local copy of personal files
The Pixel 4a LineageOS instructions recommend backing up data you want to retain to a PC and/or Google account before unlocking. A local copy gives you an independent path if cloud restoration is unavailable or incomplete.

- Use a computer with enough free storage for the phone’s personal files.
- Use a USB-C cable that supports data, not only charging, and that fits both the Pixel and the computer or its adapter.
- If the files are irreplaceable, consider a second destination such as an external drive. The second copy is optional, but it reduces dependence on one computer.
- Create a clearly named folder that identifies the phone and copy date. Do not move the only originals; copy them.
Copy files from the Pixel
- Unlock the Pixel and connect it to the computer with the data-capable USB-C cable.
- When the USB notification or connection menu appears, choose the option for transferring files or use the file-transfer mode shown by your operating system. A charge-only mode will not expose the phone’s storage.
- On the computer, open the Pixel’s internal storage and copy personal folders such as
DCIM,Pictures,Movies,Download,Documents, andRecordings, along with any other folder where you deliberately saved files. - Check application-created folders and folders outside those common names. If you recognize a file as important, copy it even when it is not in a standard media folder.
- Wait for the copy to finish before disconnecting. Keep the phone unlocked if your operating system requires it to maintain access.
Verify that the copy is usable
File-transfer completion is not the same as a verified backup. Open a sample of copied photos, videos, documents, recordings, and downloads directly from the computer. Choose files from different folders and, where practical, from different dates. Check that large files open and that filenames and sizes look plausible. If a sample will not open, recopy the affected folder before unlocking.
This manual copy protects files that are visible in shared storage. It does not claim to capture private app data, encrypted databases, account tokens, or information stored only inside an app’s sandbox. Handle those items through the app’s own backup or export process.
Protect data inside important apps separately
App data is the most common gap between “my files are copied” and “my phone is recoverable.” Before the wipe, open every app whose history, credentials, or records you cannot easily replace.

Messaging and communications
Use the messaging app’s built-in backup, export, or account-sync feature. Confirm the destination account and the latest successful backup time. Some services require a separate restore phrase, transfer code, or cloud account; save that information where you can access it after the phone is erased.
Authenticator and two-factor accounts
Check whether your authenticator supports encrypted export, account synchronization, or a device-to-device transfer. Generate and safely store recovery codes where the service provides them. Do not assume that copying an app folder or relying on Google backup will recreate one-time-password secrets.
Banking, payment, and identity apps
Follow each provider’s re-enrollment and recovery instructions. You may need a username, password, customer number, recovery code, or a second device. Confirm that you can complete the provider’s sign-in and verification process without depending on the Pixel that is about to be wiped.
Password managers and notes
Verify that the password manager has synchronized recently or export an encrypted vault if its documentation supports that method. For local notes, use the app’s export or sync function; a note that is visible only inside the app is not covered by a general copy of the Documents folder.
Games, creative apps, and specialist tools
Look for an account-sync indicator, an in-app cloud backup, or an export format. If the app has no documented backup or export, record that limitation and decide whether the data is worth preserving another way. Do not invent a file path or assume that reinstalling the app will restore its private database.

Understand the available restore paths
Android’s “Transfer your data to your new Android” guidance describes selecting data to copy during setup and restoring from a Google One backup. That documentation explains a transfer workflow; it does not promise that every item will be restored to a LineageOS installation. Plan each category according to its actual source.

Use the table as a coverage check, not as a promise that any one method will restore a particular item. If information is important, give it both an appropriate backup method and a way to verify the restore later.
The final pre-unlock checklist
Run this checklist immediately before following the bootloader section of your model’s LineageOS page. If any answer is “no” or “I am not sure,” stop and resolve it first.
- Model confirmed: You have recorded the exact Pixel model and codename and opened that model’s current LineageOS installation page.
- Google account confirmed: You know which account holds the device backup and can sign in to it after the wipe.
- Backup details checked: The latest backup time is acceptable, and you have read the listed data categories instead of assuming full coverage.
- Personal files copied: Important photos, videos, downloads, documents, recordings, and other personal files exist on the computer.
- Copy tested: You opened representative files from the computer copy and corrected any failed or incomplete transfer.
- App data handled: Messaging, authenticator, banking, password-manager, notes, and other high-value apps have completed their own export, sync, or recovery steps.
- Recovery information available: Passwords, recovery codes, transfer codes, and account details are available without relying on data that will be erased.
- Second copy considered: You have made an additional copy for files whose loss would be unacceptable, or have consciously accepted the risk.
- Unlock warning understood: You accept that bootloader unlocking will erase the phone and that the LineageOS page’s steps are specific to your model.
Only after every applicable item is complete should you begin the page’s unlock procedure.
What happens to the backups after the wipe
Unlocking removes the user data from the Pixel. The phone then starts through the setup and installation sequence described by the exact LineageOS device page. Your restore order should match your backup types:

- Complete the LineageOS installation and initial setup without assuming that an old Android backup will recreate the previous environment automatically.
- Sign in to the Google account only if the LineageOS setup and the services you choose to use support the restore option you need.
- Restore app-specific data using each app’s documented import, sync, or recovery flow.
- Connect the computer and copy verified personal files back to the appropriate storage locations.
- Open several restored files and test critical apps, messaging, authentication, and account access before deleting your backup copies.
Keep the computer copy until you have confirmed that the new installation contains everything you actually need. A backup is most useful when it remains available during recovery, not when it is discarded immediately after the first successful boot.
Troubleshoot gaps before unlocking
The Google backup date is old
Check the backup detail screen for errors or excluded categories, then retry the backup while the phone is powered and connected. If the date does not advance or the category you need is absent, treat that data as unprotected and use a local or app-specific method instead.
The computer sees charging but no files
Unlock the phone, reconnect the cable, and select the file-transfer USB mode. Try a different USB port or a different cable that is explicitly capable of data transfer. If the phone still does not appear, do not proceed to the bootloader step; find another supported way to copy and verify the files first.
A file will not open from the copy
Copy it again, preferably to a new destination folder, and test another sample from the same source folder. If repeated copies fail, preserve the original phone data and resolve the transfer problem before any wipe.
An app offers no obvious export
Read the app’s own backup, sync, account-recovery, or device-transfer instructions. Check whether the data is tied to an online account, whether a separate recovery code is required, and whether the provider documents support for a new Android installation. If no supported method exists, record the limitation and do not represent the data as backed up.
You cannot confirm which Pixel model you have
Stop before enabling or changing bootloader settings. Recheck About phone and the device’s documentation, then match the model and codename to the LineageOS page. The Pixel 4a (sunfish) instructions cannot safely stand in for an unidentified Pixel.
A practical minimum and a safer standard
The minimum responsible plan is a checked Google backup, a verified local copy of irreplaceable files, and app-specific protection for anything that cannot be recreated. A safer standard adds a second copy of those files and a test that you can access the required accounts and recovery codes without the old installation.

Neither standard eliminates every compatibility issue after installing LineageOS. They do ensure that the irreversible step—unlocking the bootloader—is not also the first moment you discover that your only copy of a photo, message history, authenticator secret, or document was stored on the phone.
