You can back up selected Windows or Mac folders to a UGREEN NAS with its desktop client, or use Apple Time Machine over SMB for a Mac’s backup history. The workflows are different: the desktop-client option copies chosen folders but does not keep overwritten-file versions, while Time Machine is the history-oriented option for Mac files, apps, and settings. Neither protects against losing the NAS itself, so important NAS data needs a separate backup destination too.
Choose the backup method that fits your computer
Use UGREEN’s desktop-client task when you want to copy selected folders from a Windows PC or Mac to the NAS. Choose Time Machine when you want a Mac backup history that includes files, applications, and settings. UGREEN documents both approaches, but they are not interchangeable: the desktop task is a selected-folder copy, while Time Machine is the Mac-specific history option.
| Question | Desktop-client backup | Time Machine over SMB |
|---|---|---|
| Works with | Windows and macOS | Mac |
| What it is for | Selected computer folders | Mac backup history, including files, applications, and settings |
| Setup | UGREEN desktop client and a Sync & Backup task | SMB, Bonjour, a designated shared folder, and macOS Time Machine settings |
| Deletion and version behavior | Source-deleted files remain in the backup; overwritten-file history is not provided | Time Machine is the history-oriented Mac option described by UGREEN |
| Capacity management | Choose a NAS destination with enough free space | Use a dedicated share and set a capacity quota |
UGREEN distinguishes backup from sync: its “Backup this computer” task creates a recoverable copy of selected folders, whereas sync is intended to keep files consistent across devices. A synchronized deletion or change can propagate, so syncing should not be treated as a separate backup. See UGREEN’s explanation of NAS file sync and its backup setup guide.

Before you start
Confirm access and storage
You need a working NAS account, a reachable NAS on your local network, and write permission for the destination folder. Check that the NAS has enough free capacity for the data you plan to copy. For the desktop-client task, UGREEN recommends creating a distinct destination folder for each computer; that makes it easier to identify the source when browsing or restoring files.
For a desktop-client task, confirm the account you sign in with can write to the destination you select. A folder that is visible or browsable is not necessarily a usable backup target if the account lacks write permission. For Time Machine, plan a dedicated shared folder rather than mixing the backup with ordinary shared files, and set a capacity quota for that folder. Check both the quota and the NAS’s available space as part of setup.
Decide what matters
Choose folders containing data that would be difficult to replace: documents, photos, financial records, creative projects, and locally stored files that cannot simply be downloaded again are practical candidates. A selected-folder task does not necessarily cover every location on the computer, so check the folder list rather than assuming the whole disk is included.
Make the source selection deliberately. The aim is not to copy every temporary or easily replaceable file by default, but to include the work and personal data you would actually need after a computer problem. Review the chosen paths before starting, especially if important files are stored outside your usual Documents, Pictures, or project folders. UGREEN’s described task backs up the folders you select; it should not be mistaken for a complete disk image or a guarantee that every computer location is included.
Plan for the initial transfer
The first copy may take longer than later runs. UGREEN recommends wired Ethernet for a large initial transfer when practical. Its 2025 practical estimate of roughly 110 MB/s applies to favorable 1GbE file-transfer conditions, not a guaranteed backup rate or independent benchmark; Wi-Fi conditions, small files, the computer sleeping, and other network activity can reduce throughput. Details are in UGREEN’s backup guide.
That estimate is useful only as context for favorable file-transfer conditions; it is not a promise that a particular PC, Mac, NAS, or Time Machine job will finish at that speed. The initial transfer can be affected by the number and size of files, the wireless connection and network activity, and whether the computer remains awake. If you use Wi-Fi, distance, interference, router capability, and the Mac’s wireless connection all influence Time Machine transfer performance. Plan to let the first job run while the computer is available rather than assuming it will complete while the machine is asleep or disconnected.
Back up selected Windows or Mac folders with the desktop client
This procedure uses UGREEN’s computer client and the NAS’s Sync & Backup app. The client guide covers Windows and macOS. Download the appropriate client from UGREEN’s app-download page or consult the UGREEN NAS download center for available clients and manuals.
- Install and open the desktop client. Sign in to the NAS using an account that can access the intended destination.
- Open the NAS backup tool. In the NAS interface, go to Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore.
- Create the task. Select Add > Backup this computer.
- Choose the source folders. Select the folders on the computer that contain the data you want to protect. Check the selected paths before continuing.
- Choose a NAS destination. Select a personal or shared folder where the account has write permission. A separate folder for this computer helps keep backups organized.
- Run the task with the computer available. Keep the computer awake and connected to the network, and leave the desktop client open while the task runs. Sleep, shutdown, a network interruption, or closing the client interrupts the backup.
- Check the result and test recovery. When the task reports completion, restore a few representative files and open them to confirm they are usable.
During the job, treat the client and network connection as part of the backup process: leaving the computer awake is not enough if the network drops, and a connected computer will not continue the task as documented if the desktop client is closed. If the run is interrupted, return to the client and check the task before relying on it as complete. Once it reports completion, do a small restore test rather than using the status alone as your proof.
What this task does—and does not—preserve
UGREEN says files deleted from the source remain in this backup, but overwritten-file history is not provided. Do not rely on this workflow to retrieve an earlier version of a file that was changed and then overwritten. If that history matters and the computer is a Mac, set up Time Machine separately.
This distinction matters when a file is damaged or changed by mistake. A copy that retains a file after the source copy is deleted can help with that deletion scenario, but it does not supply the previous version of a file that has been overwritten. UGREEN does not describe this desktop-client workflow as versioned or immutable backup, so avoid assuming it offers either protection. If version history is a requirement, choose the Mac Time Machine route described below rather than treating the folder-copy task as equivalent.

Set up a Mac backup with Time Machine over SMB
UGREEN’s Mac guide documents Time Machine over SMB for UGOS Pro firmware 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later. Those are the versions stated in that guide, published in 2024; check the instructions and menus for your particular NAS model and installed macOS release because supported versions and interface labels can change. The setup described here follows UGREEN’s Mac Finder and Time Machine guide.
- Create a dedicated shared folder. In UGOS Pro, make a new share specifically for Time Machine rather than mixing its backup data with everyday shared files.
- Enable SMB. Open Control Panel > File Service > SMB and enable SMB.
- Enable Bonjour. In the SMB advanced settings, enable Bonjour so the Mac can discover the network backup destination.
- Designate the Time Machine share. Set the new shared folder as the Time Machine folder in the NAS settings. Creating a share alone does not make it a Time Machine destination.
- Set a capacity quota. Assign a quota to the dedicated folder and ensure the NAS has sufficient available storage. UGREEN recommends starting with capacity of at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity to allow more history; this is a sizing recommendation, not a promise of a particular retention period.
- Select the destination on the Mac. Open System Settings > General > Time Machine, choose Add Backup Disk, and select the NAS destination. Enter NAS credentials if prompted.
- Choose whether to encrypt. If you enable Time Machine encryption, the Mac encrypts the network backup before storing it. Keep the encryption password securely: if it is lost, the backup may be unrecoverable.
- Allow the first backup to finish. UGREEN says the first Time Machine backup is a full copy and later backups contain changed data. Keep the Mac connected and available during the initial transfer; Ethernet is preferable when practical.
The dedicated share and explicit Time Machine designation are separate setup details: creating an ordinary share does not by itself register it as a Time Machine target. Likewise, Finder access to the NAS is not enough to ensure Time Machine can discover a configured destination. Complete the SMB and Bonjour settings, designate the share, and then choose that destination from Time Machine settings.
Encryption is optional in the documented setup. If enabled, the Mac encrypts the network backup before it is stored on the NAS. That makes the password an essential part of recovery: store it somewhere secure and accessible to you, because UGREEN warns that losing it can make the backup unrecoverable. Do not place the only copy of the password somewhere that depends on accessing the backup itself.
Capacity and speed expectations
The suggested quota of at least twice the Mac’s storage is intended to leave room for more backup history. Actual history depends on how quickly the Mac’s data changes and how much space is available; the ratio does not translate into a fixed number of days or months. Review the NAS share’s free space as the backup grows.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUGREEN says the first Time Machine backup is a full copy, with later backups containing changed data. The first run therefore has a different transfer burden from subsequent runs. A larger quota gives more room for history according to UGREEN’s recommendation, but it cannot promise a fixed retention interval: changing data and available capacity determine how much history fits. Keep an eye on the share’s quota and free capacity rather than treating the twice-the-Mac-storage suggestion as a duration guarantee.
UGREEN’s roughly 110 MB/s figure is a practical estimate for favorable 1GbE file-transfer conditions, not a result from an independent test of Time Machine. Wi-Fi performance varies with distance, interference, router capability, and the Mac’s wireless connection. Small files and competing network traffic can also affect transfer time.
Troubleshoot when Time Machine cannot find the NAS
Being able to connect to the NAS in Finder does not prove that Time Machine discovery and destination setup are complete. Check these items in order:
- SMB: Confirm SMB is enabled in Control Panel > File Service > SMB.
- Bonjour: Confirm Bonjour is enabled in the SMB advanced settings.
- Time Machine designation: Verify that the shared folder is explicitly designated as the Time Machine folder.
- Local network: Make sure the Mac can reach the NAS on the local network and is not isolated from it by network settings.
- Credentials: If prompted, enter NAS credentials with access to the destination.
- Quota and free space: Check that the share has a usable quota and the NAS has available capacity.
- Version compatibility: Compare the installed NAS firmware and macOS release with current instructions for the exact device; UGREEN’s cited guide names UGOS Pro 1.9.0.0035 or later and macOS Monterey 12 or later.
Work through those checks instead of assuming that the NAS is unavailable just because Time Machine does not list it. A Finder connection establishes that you can access the NAS in Finder; it does not establish that Bonjour service discovery is enabled or that the share was designated for Time Machine. Confirm the NAS-side configuration first, then check network reachability, credentials, quota, and space. If the software version differs from the guide, consult current instructions for the specific device and macOS release rather than assuming the 2024 menu path or compatibility statement still applies unchanged.

Protect the NAS copy and verify that recovery works
A computer-to-NAS backup protects against some problems with the computer, but it leaves the NAS copy exposed to loss of the NAS, theft, fire, or another site-wide incident. UGREEN recommends making another copy of important NAS data to an external drive, cloud storage, or a second NAS. RAID and snapshots can help with availability or recovery scenarios, but they are not a substitute for an independent backup destination. See UGREEN’s NAS backup strategy guide.

For a USB-drive copy, UGREEN documents using Sync & Backup to copy selected NAS folders to a connected external drive. Check your NAS model’s supported drives, file systems, and capacity before choosing a disk; the guide is available at Back Up UGREEN NAS to an External Hard Drive.
This is a separate protection step from backing up the computer. A second copy on another destination addresses risks to the NAS-held data that the computer-to-NAS copy cannot address by itself. The sources describe external storage, cloud storage, or another NAS as possible destinations, but do not establish one named cloud provider or a single solution for every reader. Choose a destination that fits the data and confirm the exact NAS model’s support before buying or connecting a drive.
Do not treat a successful task status as proof that the files you need can be recovered. Restore a few representative files—such as a document, a photo, and a larger project file—and open them. For Time Machine, UGREEN describes the network backup as a sparsebundle image and advises against manually deleting files inside it. Manage the backup through Time Machine and UGOS controls instead.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
A useful check is to select files that represent different kinds of data you care about, restore them, and open them. This does not prove every file is recoverable, but it confirms that the restore path works for those examples. For Time Machine, avoid trying to clean up space by deleting contents within the sparsebundle manually; use Time Machine and UGOS controls to manage the backup. If encryption is enabled, keep the password available for recovery.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep an active Apple Photos library off the NAS share
UGREEN cautions against placing an active Apple Photos library on network or internet storage. Keep the working library on the Mac or on directly attached storage formatted for that library. To protect it, back up the Mac-stored library with Time Machine; if other people need access to image files on the NAS, export originals to a regular NAS folder rather than moving the active library there. See UGREEN’s Mac file-management guidance.
The distinction is between the live library your Mac uses and exported image files you want to share. Keep the active library on the Mac or directly attached storage; use Time Machine to back up that Mac-stored library. If the goal is to make originals available to other people through the NAS, export the originals to a normal shared folder rather than relocating the working library onto the network share.
Frequently asked questions
How do I back up my PC to a UGREEN NAS?
Install UGREEN’s desktop client, sign in to the NAS, then open Sync & Backup > Back up & Restore > Add > Backup this computer. Choose the source folders and a personal or shared NAS destination where your account can write. Keep the PC awake and connected, with the desktop client open while the task runs. Make a separate destination folder for each computer if you want to keep the backups easy to identify.
Can I use the same desktop-client method on a Mac?
UGREEN documents its desktop-client folder-backup workflow for both Windows and macOS. It is suitable for selected folders on either platform. For Mac backup history that includes files, applications, and settings, UGREEN describes Time Machine over SMB as the Mac-specific option; the two methods have different setup and recovery characteristics.
Does “Backup this computer” keep older versions of files?
UGREEN says this workflow retains files deleted at the source, but does not provide version history for overwritten files. Do not count on it to retrieve an earlier version after a file has been changed and overwritten. For a Mac where history is important, configure Time Machine separately.
How much NAS space should I give Time Machine?
UGREEN recommends starting with a dedicated Time Machine destination at least twice the Mac’s storage capacity. Treat this as a recommendation to allow more history, not a promise of a particular number of days or months. Actual retention depends on how much the Mac’s data changes and the space available; set a quota and check free capacity as the backup grows.

Why does Time Machine not show my NAS even though Finder can connect?
Finder access alone does not complete Time Machine discovery or setup. Check that SMB and Bonjour are enabled, that the shared folder is designated as the Time Machine folder, and that the Mac can reach the NAS on the local network. Also check credentials, quota, available storage, and current firmware and macOS compatibility for your device.
