Back up your OnePlus phone before installing a beta, and keep a copy somewhere other than the phone. A local backup stored only on the device may be cleared by a wipe or factory reset. Also check the official beta notice for your exact model, regional variant, and build: an upgrade and a rollback can have different effects on your data.
Check the beta notice for your exact OnePlus model first
Before making a backup or starting an installation, find the official OnePlus beta announcement that matches your phone and regional variant. Confirm the required current build, installation instructions, compatibility limits, and—most importantly—whether the specific upgrade or rollback erases data. Beta instructions are release-specific; a path or warning for one model should not be treated as universal.
For example, OnePlus’s Open Beta announcement for the OnePlus 13 in India says that this particular upgrade is designed not to clear data, but still recommends backing up important information. The same announcement says rollback erases all data. It also states that carrier-locked variants such as T-Mobile and Verizon are incompatible with those Open Beta builds. Those details apply to that announcement, not automatically to other phones or releases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe announcement puts its upgrade warning this way: “This Open Beta Test version upgrade is designed such that installing it should not clear your data. However, we strongly recommend that you back up all important data on your device before proceeding, as a general precaution.” Treat the backup recommendation as important even when the upgrade is designed to preserve data.

Read the notice as instructions for a particular release, not as a general promise about all OxygenOS betas. A notice can set requirements for the phone’s current software build, identify supported regional variants, and explain the route for installing or leaving that release. Check that the model name and region match your own phone before acting. For instance, the OnePlus 13 India example does not establish compatibility for a different OnePlus model or a different regional beta. Its carrier-lock restriction is likewise specific to those builds.
If the announcement does not clearly say what happens to data during installation, do not infer that the process is non-wiping from another beta’s instructions. Look for separate installation and rollback guidance. These are distinct operations: a beta upgrade can be designed to preserve data while the documented route back to stable software erases it. If you cannot establish the likely consequence for your exact release, make a backup that is stored off the phone before proceeding.
Choose a backup route—or use both
A local backup is useful for creating a copy on the phone, but the documented Android 12 process does not include app data when it backs up apps. Copying the resulting Backup folder to a computer gives you a second copy outside the phone. Google backup is another option described in a OnePlus manual, but you should verify it in your own Google account and should not assume it includes every app’s private data.

|---|---|---|---|
| Local backup on the phone | Phone storage, in a folder named Backup |
The Android 12 manual lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps excluding app data. The OxygenOS 14 manual describes local backup for small volumes of data. | The phone. The menu path depends on the software version. |
| Local backup copied to a computer | Phone storage and a separate copy on the computer | The Android 12 manual describes copying the Backup folder and warns that local backup data can be cleared by wipe, erase, or factory-reset operations. |
A data-capable cable, a computer, and the phone’s file-transfer mode. |
| Google backup | Google account storage | The OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes Google Drive backup and recovery. It does not establish that every app’s private data is included. | A Google account and internet access; the manual advises Wi-Fi if the data may be too large for mobile data. |
The practical difference is where the copy lives and what the documentation says it covers. A phone-only local backup is convenient, but it remains on the device that could be wiped. A computer copy puts another copy outside the phone, while Google backup uses an account-based route and requires internet access. These are not guarantees that all apps or private app data will be preserved. Where a type of information is especially important, check whether the app has its own account sync or backup instructions too.
You can use more than one route, especially if you want a local copy and an off-device copy. The OnePlus manuals establish the steps and limitations of the documented methods, but they do not claim that any one of them captures every kind of data on every model. Treat the backup as a safeguard, not as proof that a beta is risk-free or that every screen and app can be restored exactly as before.
Create a local backup using the menu for your OxygenOS version
Use the path documented for your device and software generation. OnePlus menu names can differ: the Android 12 manual and OxygenOS 14 manual do not give the same path. These are examples from those manuals, not instructions guaranteed to match every current OnePlus phone.

Before starting, make sure you are following the menu path for the software generation that is actually installed on your phone. A path appearing in a manual for another generation can be useful as a clue, but it is not proof that the same labels exist on your device. If you do not see the listed menu, consult the manual for your model or its official support and beta information rather than tapping through unrelated settings.

Android 12 path documented by OnePlus
- Open Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Choose the option to create a new backup.
- Select the categories you want to include. The Android 12 manual lists contacts, messages, call logs, system data, and apps, but app data is excluded from the documented app backup.
- Tap Start and allow the process to finish.
Review the category choices before starting. In particular, the manual’s reference to apps should not be read as a promise that app contents or private data are included: the documented flow excludes app data. If there is information inside an app that would be difficult to replace, do not assume that selecting the app category protects it. Check the app’s own backup, sync, or account-recovery instructions, where available, and confirm that those arrangements are current.
OxygenOS 14 path documented by OnePlus
- Open Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup.
- Follow the backup controls shown on your phone and confirm the backup completes.
The OxygenOS 14 manual recommends local backup for small volumes of data. If the menu on your phone differs, do not guess at a path based on another model’s instructions; check the manual or beta notice for your particular device.
These two examples show why checking the software version matters: the Android 12 path begins under System settings, while the OxygenOS 14 path begins under Additional settings. Do not treat either as a universal route across all OnePlus phones. The steps after opening the menu can also be presented differently by a device or software generation, so follow the controls on the phone and its matching instructions.
Let the backup finish, then copy it off the phone
The Android 12 manual says a local backup can take time and advises against restarting or turning off the phone while it is in progress. Once the process finishes, the backup is stored in phone storage under Backup. Keeping that as your only copy is risky if the beta process, a rollback, or a later troubleshooting step wipes the device.
Wait until the backup operation has completed before treating it as ready. The manual does not give a guaranteed duration, so allow the phone to finish rather than assuming that a short wait means the files are complete. Avoid restarting or powering down during the operation. If you intend to rely on this backup, the next important step is to copy it somewhere outside the phone before beginning an operation that could erase phone storage.

- Connect the phone to a computer with a data-capable cable. The cable connector depends on the phone and computer; a charging-only cable may not provide the required file-transfer connection.
- When prompted on the phone, select Transfer files.
- On the computer, open the phone’s Internal shared storage.
- Find the
Backupfolder and copy it to a location on the computer. - Check that the copied folder is accessible on the computer before proceeding with the beta.
The computer-copy workflow requires a computer and a cable that supports data transfer; having a cable that only charges the phone is not enough for the documented file-transfer method. After selecting Transfer files, navigate to the phone’s internal shared storage on the computer, locate the folder named Backup, and copy it. Keep track of where you put the copy so you can find it later. The useful check is not just that you started a copy, but that the copied folder is accessible on the computer before you proceed.
The Android 12 manual warns that local backup data is cleared if you wipe data and cache, erase all data, or restore factory settings. Copying the folder to a computer creates a separate copy that is not stored only on the phone. This does not establish that the copy contains every kind of app data, so keep the documented category limitation in mind.
This warning matters most when preparing for a rollback or another operation that explicitly erases or resets the device. If the only local backup is in the phone’s storage, the same wipe that removes the phone’s data may also clear that backup. A computer copy reduces that particular risk because it is stored separately; it does not remove the need to understand what the backup contains or how the exact beta’s recovery process works.

A OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes backup and recovery through Google Drive and advises using Wi-Fi when the amount of data may be too large for mobile data. If you use this route, confirm that backup is enabled for the Google account you intend to use and that the backup has completed before you begin the beta process.
Do not treat Google backup as proof that every app can be restored exactly as it was. The cited manual does not promise coverage of every app’s private data. For information that matters, check whether the relevant app provides its own backup or account-based recovery instructions rather than assuming the phone-level backup includes it.
Google backup is a different route from copying the local Backup folder: it relies on the relevant Google account and an internet connection rather than a computer-to-phone file transfer. The OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes Google Drive backup and recovery, but that description should not be stretched into a guarantee for another model’s exact menus or every app’s data. Verify the account you will need for recovery and the completion status before you install the beta.

If the data could be large, use Wi-Fi as the manual advises instead of assuming mobile data is appropriate. A completed status is more useful than simply having enabled a setting. If an app contains information that you cannot afford to lose, check its own account and backup arrangements as well. The goal is to know which copy exists, where it is stored, and which categories it is known to cover before the phone’s software changes.

Do these checks before applying the beta, while the phone is still operating normally:
- Confirm you have read the official notice for your exact model, regional variant, and intended build.
- Check whether that specific upgrade preserves data by design, wipes data, or leaves the outcome unclear; separately check the rollback instructions.
- Wait for the local backup to finish without restarting or powering off the phone.
- If relying on local backup, confirm that the
Backupfolder exists and that the copy on your computer opens or can be browsed. - If relying on Google backup, verify completion for the Google account you will use for recovery.
- Remember that the documented Android 12 local flow backs up apps without app data; do not rely on it as the only protection for information that an app does not sync or back up separately.
For the OnePlus 13 India Open Beta example, the upgrade is designed not to clear data, while rollback erases all device contents. If you might need to roll back, prepare for that more destructive operation before installing the beta, not after discovering a problem.
Use this final check to catch different kinds of failure, not just to confirm that a backup menu was opened. First, match the notice to the device and build. Next, verify the backup completed. Then verify the off-phone copy or account backup that you plan to use can be found. Finally, revisit the rollback instructions as a separate decision. A backup made on the phone but not copied elsewhere is not equivalent to a copy that remains accessible if the phone is erased.
If the notice is unclear about data loss, the safest practical choice is not to assume the upgrade behaves like a different release. Find the official instructions that match your device, and do not install until you understand the relevant consequences. Keep the backup available for as long as you may need it; the reviewed instructions establish why it should be kept off the phone when a wipe or factory reset is possible.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a menu path from the wrong OxygenOS generation. The documented Android 12 and OxygenOS 14 paths differ. Use the instructions for your installed software and phone.
- Leaving the only copy in internal storage. The Android 12 manual says local backup data can be cleared by wipe, erasing all data, or factory reset. Copy the folder to a computer if you are using that route.
- Assuming “apps” means app contents. The documented Android 12 local selection includes apps but excludes app data. Check app-specific backup options for information that matters.
- Confusing upgrade and rollback. They can have different data consequences. In the OnePlus 13 India announcement, the beta upgrade is designed not to clear data, while rollback erases all data.
- Generalizing a beta restriction. Compatibility details such as the carrier-locked restriction in the OnePlus 13 India notice apply to that release, not automatically to every OnePlus beta.
- Assuming a backup setting has finished. Wait for completion and confirm that the copy you plan to use is accessible before installing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will installing a OnePlus OxygenOS beta erase my data?
It depends on the exact beta, phone, region, and installation route. OnePlus’s OnePlus 13 Open Beta announcement for India says that upgrade is designed not to clear data but still recommends backing up important information. Do not apply that statement to another release; check its official notice for the precise model and build.

How do I back up my OnePlus phone before an update?
Use the local backup menu documented for your OxygenOS generation, or the Google backup route described in a OnePlus manual, and verify completion. If you make a local backup, copy the Backup folder to a computer so your only copy is not on the phone. The documented Android 12 local flow backs up apps without app data.
Where is the OnePlus local backup stored?
The Android 12 OnePlus manual says the local backup is stored in phone storage in a folder named Backup. It describes copying that folder from Internal shared storage to a computer. Menu labels and paths vary by software generation, so use the instructions that match your phone.
How do I copy a OnePlus backup to a computer?
Connect the phone using a data-capable cable, select Transfer files on the phone, open Internal shared storage on the computer, and copy the Backup folder. Confirm that the copied folder is accessible on the computer before installing the beta.
Does the OnePlus local backup include app data?
The Android 12 manual’s documented local backup flow lists apps but excludes app data. Do not assume it preserves private information inside every app. Check an important app’s own backup, sync, or account-recovery instructions.
Will my backup survive a OnePlus rollback?
Do not count on a local backup stored only on the phone surviving a wipe. The Android 12 manual warns that local backup data can be cleared by wiping data and cache, erasing all data, or restoring factory settings. For the reviewed OnePlus 13 India beta, the announcement says rollback erases all data. Keep a copy outside the phone and follow the notice for your exact release.
Can I use Google backup instead of a local backup?
A OnePlus 10 Pro manual describes Google Drive backup and recovery, and recommends Wi-Fi if the data may be too large for mobile data. Verify that the backup completed for the Google account you will use. The manual does not promise that every app’s private data is included.
What if my OnePlus local backup menu is missing or different?
The documented Android 12 path is Settings > System settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup; the OxygenOS 14 manual instead gives Settings > Additional settings > Back up & migrate > Local backup. These are version-specific examples. Check the manual and official beta instructions for your exact device rather than assuming either path applies.
Do I need to back up if the beta says it should preserve my data?
Yes. OnePlus’s OnePlus 13 India Open Beta announcement says that particular upgrade is designed not to clear data, but still strongly recommends backing up as a general precaution. Also check rollback instructions separately, because the same announcement says rollback erases all data.
The Bottom Line
Before installing a OnePlus beta, match the official instructions to your exact phone, region, and build; create a backup and verify it completed. If using local backup, copy the Backup folder to a computer because a wipe or factory reset can clear the phone’s copy. Do not assume an upgrade and rollback have the same data consequences, or that a phone-level backup includes every app’s private data.
