Use DriveBackupV2 to create ZIP archives of your Minecraft server, authenticate Google Drive from the server console or chat, and upload backups on a schedule. On a new installation, the plugin backs up the world and plugins directories, runs every 60 minutes by default, and keeps up to 20 remote backups. You can change the paths, schedule, compression, and retention in config.yml, then apply edits with /drivebackup reloadconfig.
What DriveBackupV2 does
DriveBackupV2 is a Bukkit-family plugin for Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, and Purpur servers. Project documentation lists Java 8 or newer and Minecraft versions 1.8 through 1.21.X. It packages selected server files into ZIP archives and sends those archives to remote storage such as Google Drive. The project describes the plugin as an additional layer of security for server data, not as a replacement for a tested disaster-recovery plan.

Its documentation states that data it uploads, downloads, or otherwise accesses in your Google Drive or OneDrive remains on that Minecraft server and that the project does not have access to it. You still control the Google account, the destination folder, and how long old archives are retained.
Prerequisites and planning
- A Bukkit-compatible server (Bukkit, Spigot, Paper, or Purpur) running a Minecraft version supported by the project, currently documented as 1.8–1.21.X.
- Java 8 or newer, matching the requirements in the project documentation.
- Permission to copy files into the server’s
pluginsdirectory and restart the server. - A Google account with enough Drive capacity for the number and size of archives you intend to retain.
- Operator status or the command permissions required by DriveBackupV2. Linking specifically requires
drivebackup.linkAccountsunless you are an operator.
Decide what a recoverable server means before configuring the plugin. A survival server may need world data, plugin configuration, permissions, and player data. A heavily modded or customized server may also need additional directories. Backing up every file beside the server JAR is possible, but the wiki warns that this creates larger archives and captures files that are unnecessary for ordinary rollback.

Install DriveBackupV2
- Download a DriveBackupV2 release that matches your server environment.
- Copy
DriveBackupV2.jarinto the server’spluginsfolder. Put the file in the folder belonging to the server instance you will actually run; copying it to a proxy or unrelated test instance will not protect the live world. - Restart the Minecraft server. On startup, the plugin creates
plugins/DriveBackupV2and writes its configuration. - Stop and inspect the generated configuration only after the first startup has completed. Editing a file before the plugin creates it can result in missing settings or an overwritten file.
Check the startup log for a successful plugin load before attempting authentication. If the plugin is disabled, resolve the Java, server-version, or dependency error shown in the log first; a disabled plugin cannot create or upload archives.
Link the server to Google Drive
DriveBackupV2 uses a device-link flow rather than asking you to paste a permanent Google password into config.yml.
- Make sure the server is running and that you are an operator or have the
drivebackup.linkAccountspermission. - Run
/drivebackup linkaccount googledrive. - Open the link printed in chat. If you are managing the server remotely, copy the link from your console or management panel without altering it.
- Enter the one-time code shown by the linking page.
- Sign in to Google, review the requested Drive access, and approve it for the account that should receive the backups.
- Return to the server and wait for the success message. Do not start a second linking attempt while the first one is waiting for approval.
The account used in this step determines where the remote archives are stored. If you accidentally authorize the wrong account, revoke that account’s access in its Google security settings and repeat the link process with the intended account. Keep the one-time code private; it is part of the authorization flow.
Choose what gets backed up
Default targets
With an untouched configuration, DriveBackupV2 targets the world and plugins directories located beside the Minecraft server JAR. These defaults cover the primary world and the plugin files that usually determine server behavior, but they do not automatically include every custom directory.
Use backup-list for explicit paths
The backup-list section defines the paths included in an archive. Each entry can specify a literal path or a pattern, a ZIP filename format, whether the plugin should create the archive, and exclusions. The following configuration keeps the standard two targets while giving each archive a recognizable name:

create: true%FORMAT is replaced according to the plugin’s filename-format behavior, so retain it when you want timestamps or other generated values in the archive name. A fixed filename can make successive runs overwrite one another or become difficult to identify; use a generated format for routine backups.

Patterns, exclusions, and archive creation
globlets one entry match a set of paths, such asworld*for multiple world directories.blacklistexcludes matching files or directories from an otherwise included path. Use it for caches, temporary exports, or other data that is not needed for recovery.createcontrols whether DriveBackupV2 creates the ZIP for that entry. It is useful when you want to describe a path but handle archive creation differently.formatcontrols the resulting ZIP filename. Include a distinct name for each major data set so you can identify an archive without opening it.
Include every directory required to rebuild your particular server, but do not blindly select the entire server directory. The project wiki notes that a whole-directory backup increases size and includes files that are not useful for restore or rollback. Large logs, caches, crash reports, and downloaded temporary files can consume Drive space without improving recovery.
Set the schedule, destinations, and retention
The generated configuration includes examples for a 60-minute delay, weekday or everyday schedules, local and remote destinations, and retention counts. The normal remote retention default is 20 backups. The documented local retention default is 0, meaning local automatic retention is disabled unless you configure it.

Retention is a deletion policy, not a backup frequency. For example, a 60-minute interval with keep-count: 20 normally leaves roughly 20 hourly remote archives, subject to the schedule and any runs that fail. Setting either retention value to -1 prevents automatic deletion, so storage usage can grow until you remove files yourself.
Compression level
DriveBackupV2 documents ZIP compression levels 1 through 9. Lower levels generally finish faster and use more storage; higher levels generally produce smaller archives and consume more CPU time. Start with a middle value on a busy server, then adjust after observing backup duration and server load. Compression is performed on the server host, so a high setting can compete with the Minecraft process for CPU and disk resources.

Apply configuration changes
- Stop or pause normal server administration long enough to edit
plugins/DriveBackupV2/config.ymlsafely. - Change only the paths and settings you intend to change, preserving YAML indentation.
- Save the file.
- Run
/drivebackup reloadconfig. The command reloads edited settings without requiring a full restart. - Run a manual backup and inspect the resulting archive before relying on the next scheduled run.
A YAML indentation error can prevent settings from loading. If the reload reports an error, restore the last known-good indentation and reload again; do not assume the new schedule is active until the status or next-backup command confirms it.
Run a backup and verify it
Do not wait for the first hourly run to discover an authentication or path problem. DriveBackupV2 provides commands for an immediate run, connection testing, and schedule inspection.

These commands require the permissions listed in the DriveBackupV2 command reference unless the sender is an operator. Run the connection test before a manual backup when linking has just been completed. During a manual run, use /drivebackup status rather than starting overlapping jobs.
Verify the archive in two places
- Confirm that the run finishes successfully in the server output or status command.
- Open the configured Google Drive destination and verify that a new ZIP appears in the expected remote directory.
- Check the filename and timestamp so you know which server instance created it.
- Download or copy one archive to a staging location and list its contents. Confirm that the intended world, plugin configuration, and any additional paths are present.
- If local copies are enabled, verify the corresponding file in the configured local save directory.
A successful upload only proves that an archive reached Drive. It does not prove that every required directory was selected or that the archive can restore a working server.

The project documentation establishes upload, retention, and verification commands but does not publish a restoration success rate or a benchmark. Treat restore testing as your responsibility.

- Create a separate test server directory and use the same Minecraft and server software versions as the live instance when practical.
- Stop the test server before replacing files. Never extract a world over a running production process.
- Download one recent ZIP from Google Drive and extract it into the test directory, preserving the paths represented in the archive.
- Install the required server software and plugin JARs, then place the extracted world and configuration directories where the test server expects them.
- Start the test server, review its log for missing files or plugin errors, and connect as a player.
- Check world spawn, inventories, permissions, plugin settings, and any custom dimensions or data your server needs.
- Record the archive date and the result. Repeat after major Minecraft, plugin, or configuration changes.
Keep the production server untouched during this exercise. A restore test also reveals whether your backup-list omitted a required directory, whether exclusions were too broad, and how long a real recovery will take.
Troubleshooting common failures
The linking command is denied
Use an operator account or grant the account drivebackup.linkAccounts. Check that the command is typed exactly as /drivebackup linkaccount googledrive; the destination name is part of the command.
The authorization page or code expires
Start a fresh linking command and complete the device flow in one session. Do not reuse an old one-time code or alter the printed link. If the wrong Google account was authorized, revoke its access and link the intended account again.
The plugin starts but no backup contains the world
Inspect backup-list and confirm that the path is relative to the directory containing the server JAR. Verify capitalization and indentation, then run /drivebackup reloadconfig followed by /drivebackup backup. Check the ZIP contents manually; a successful command with an empty or incomplete archive usually indicates a path, glob, or blacklist rule rather than a Drive connection problem.
The backup is too large or slows the server
Remove unnecessary directories from the list, add precise blacklist rules for caches and temporary files, or split major data sets into separate entries. Lower the compression level if CPU time is the bottleneck, or raise it if storage and upload size matter more. Schedule backups during quieter periods when your chosen schedule allows it.

Old archives are not being deleted
Check keep-count and local-keep-count. A value of -1 intentionally disables automatic deletion; a local value of 0 means no local retention by default. Confirm that you edited the active configuration and ran /drivebackup reloadconfig. Remote and local counts are independent.

The next run is not when expected
Run /drivebackup nextbackup and compare the result with the configured delay and day filters. A 60-minute interval does not override a weekday-only schedule. After changing schedule values, reload the configuration and check the next run again.
Google Drive tests fail after previously working
Run /drivebackup test googledrive, inspect the server log, and verify that the linked account still has available Drive storage. If credentials were revoked or the account changed, repeat the link-account flow. A connectivity test does not repair an invalid or revoked authorization by itself.
Operational checklist
- Install the JAR in the live server’s
pluginsdirectory and confirm it loads. - Link Google Drive with
/drivebackup linkaccount googledrive. - Review the default
worldandpluginstargets against your actual server layout. - Add custom worlds or required data with
backup-list; exclude caches and temporary files withblacklist. - Set the interval, day schedule, compression, remote retention, and local retention deliberately.
- Reload with
/drivebackup reloadconfigafter every edit. - Run
/drivebackup test googledrive, then/drivebackup backup. - Verify the ZIP in Google Drive and inspect its contents.
- Perform periodic restores on a separate server directory, especially after upgrades.
What this setup can and cannot guarantee
DriveBackupV2 gives a Minecraft server an automated path from selected files to ZIP archives in Google Drive. Its documented defaults are useful for many small servers, but they are not universal: custom world names, mod data, proxy settings, databases, and external services may require separate backup methods. Retention protects against accidental deletion only while the configured copies still exist, and a remote archive is useful only if it contains the files you need and can be extracted successfully.
For that reason, configure the smallest complete backup set, verify every upload, retain enough history for your rollback needs, and rehearse a restore on a separate directory. The result is a practical Google Drive backup routine rather than an untested promise of recovery.
