The safest Bedrock backup is a dated copy of the complete active world folder, plus the server settings and add-ons needed to open it again. For a Bedrock Dedicated Server (BDS), find the folder named by level-name in server.properties, stop the server cleanly, copy that world under worlds/, and keep an archive away from the live machine. Realms make automatic backups, but Minecraft says they are not retained indefinitely, so download independent copies. A seed can regenerate terrain; it cannot restore builds, inventories, or progress.

What a usable Bedrock backup contains

A backup is useful only if it can return players to a known-good point. For a self-hosted Bedrock Dedicated Server, the essential item is the entire active world directory. The server creates a worlds directory and stores each world in its own subfolder. The level-name value in server.properties tells the server which subfolder to load. A copied folder with a different name will not be opened until that setting matches it.

Preserve the surrounding setup when the world depends on it. Keep a copy of server.properties, allowlist.json, and permissions.json, along with any behavior packs or resource packs used by the world. These files are not substitutes for the world folder: they are the context that lets a replacement server reproduce the same rules, access controls, and add-ons.

  • World data: the complete folder selected by level-name, including its subfolders and files.
  • Configuration: the properties file and, when used, allowlist and permissions files.
  • Content: behavior packs, resource packs, and their accompanying configuration where applicable.
  • Metadata: the backup date, world name, Bedrock server version, and whether add-ons were enabled.

The metadata is an administrative aid rather than a Minecraft requirement. It lets you choose a compatible restore point instead of guessing which archive belongs to which installation.

Back up a self-hosted Bedrock Dedicated Server

Make the copy while the server is not writing to the world. Announce maintenance to players, use your host’s normal stop or shutdown control, and wait until the process has exited. A live copy can capture files at different moments and leave a restore that is incomplete or inconsistent.

1. Identify the active world

  1. Open the Bedrock Dedicated Server installation directory.
  2. Open server.properties with a plain-text editor.
  3. Read the value after level-name=. Treat the value exactly as written, including capitalization and spaces.
  4. Open the server’s worlds directory and locate the subfolder with that exact name.

If the named folder is not present, do not create a replacement folder and assume it is the right one. Check for a spelling or capitalization mismatch, confirm that you are looking at the installation currently used by the service, and verify that the server has started at least once so its normal directories exist.

2. Copy the complete world folder

Copy the identified folder, not just individual files inside it, to a backup location. Keep the original folder hierarchy intact. Give the copy a dated name or put it inside a dated directory such as 2026-10-15_world-name; the exact naming convention is yours, but it should make the capture date and world identity obvious.

At the same time, copy the configuration and content needed to recreate the installation: server.properties, allowlist.json, permissions.json, and any behavior or resource packs used by the world. If several worlds share one server installation, record which configuration belonged to the backed-up world and keep the active folder name in your notes.

3. Create an optional ZIP archive

Microsoft documents compressing a world folder into a ZIP file when moving it to another computer. You can compress only the world folder, or create one archive containing the complete backup set and a short text note with the server version and level-name. Extract the archive before attempting a BDS restore; the server expects an ordinary folder under worlds/, not a ZIP file sitting beside it.

Keep the uncompressed copy until you have opened or otherwise verified the archive. Compression is for transport and storage, not a guarantee that a damaged source became recoverable.

4. Store copies away from the live host

A backup on the same disk as the server is vulnerable to the same disk failure, accidental deletion, ransomware, or an incorrect command. Keep one dated copy on separate storage, such as a portable external SSD, and an additional off-site copy when the world matters. This is a practical disaster-recovery pattern based on the documented copy-and-transfer workflow; Minecraft does not publish a required number of copies or a fixed BDS retention schedule.

Use a simple retention scheme that matches how often players build. For example, retain several recent daily captures and older weekly or milestone captures. Do not delete the only copy of a world merely because a newer archive exists until the newer archive has been checked.

5. Verify the backup before declaring it complete

  • Open the archive or backup directory and confirm that the world folder contains files and subfolders, rather than an empty directory.
  • Check that its folder name matches the recorded level-name.
  • Confirm that the configuration and any packs you intended to preserve are present.
  • Record the date, server version, world name, and add-on status in the backup’s filename or a note stored with it.

The strongest verification is a test restore on a separate, stopped BDS installation. A test proves that the folder can be selected and that the expected world opens; it also reveals missing packs or permissions before an emergency.

Restore a BDS world on the same or a replacement server

Use a restore when the original installation is damaged, a player made an irreversible change, or you are moving to another machine. Work on a stopped instance so the replacement process cannot modify the files while you are placing them.

Seagate Portable 1TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PlayStation, & Xbox, 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX1000400) , Black
  • Easily store and access 1TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive.Specific uses: Personal
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop. Reformatting may be required for Mac
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  1. Install the official Bedrock Dedicated Server package on the replacement machine, or stop the damaged instance if the installation itself is still usable.
  2. If the backup is a ZIP, extract it to a temporary location.
  3. Place the backed-up world folder directly under the replacement server’s worlds/ directory. Do not add an extra nesting level such as worlds/archive/world-name.
  4. Rename the folder if necessary so the name is clear and legal for the filesystem. Note the final name exactly.
  5. Restore server.properties and the relevant allowlist, permissions, behavior packs, and resource packs when the world uses them. Review the settings rather than blindly replacing values that must differ on the new machine.
  6. Set level-name to the exact restored folder name.
  7. Start the server and join as an operator or trusted player. Check the spawn area, several important builds, inventories, and add-on behavior before inviting everyone back.

Microsoft’s BDS guidance describes copying a world into worlds/, renaming it when needed, and setting level-name to that name. The same sequence applies whether the folder came from another computer or from your dated archive.

If the restored server creates a new world

  • Wrong selector: compare level-name character by character with the folder under worlds/.
  • Wrong installation: confirm that the service or hosting panel points to the directory where you copied the backup.
  • Extra ZIP nesting: extract the archive so the selected world folder is immediately inside worlds/.
  • Incomplete copy: recopy the entire source folder while the source server is stopped.
  • Missing content: restore the behavior and resource packs and their configuration; a world may load while its add-on features do not.

Download and preserve a Minecraft Bedrock Realm world

Realms worlds are backed up automatically. That managed convenience is different from owning a local archive: Minecraft warns that Realm backups are not retained indefinitely. Download a copy before replacing a world, cancelling a subscription, making a major experiment, or moving to self-hosting.

Download the current Realm slot

  1. Open Minecraft and select Play.
  2. Open the Realms tab.
  3. Select Realms Hub.
  4. Choose the Realm and open World.
  5. Open Slots and select the slot containing the world.
  6. Choose the three dots next to Edit world.
  7. Select Download World.

The downloaded world is now an independent local copy. Give it a date and descriptive name and place it on storage separate from the device on which you downloaded it. If you intend to use it with BDS, extract or import it as a normal world folder and follow the BDS placement and level-name steps above.

Choose an older Realm backup

In the slot’s Edit World screen, choose Backups to view available saves, select the desired older version, and use Download World. Downloading is safer than replacing the live slot while you are still deciding which point is correct. Keep the downloaded file with its date so you can distinguish it from the current slot export.

Realm backup retention has no fixed duration published in the cited Minecraft guidance. Do not treat the in-product list as a permanent history; make local downloads on a schedule appropriate to the world.

Restore a local Bedrock world

Local Bedrock worlds are separate from both BDS folders and Realm slots. Minecraft Help’s general procedure is to move the manual backup file to the current world-file location for the relevant platform. The exact location and file-management steps differ by device, so first close Minecraft, identify the platform’s current world storage, and preserve the existing world before replacing anything.

  1. Close Minecraft so it is not holding the world file open.
  2. Make a safety copy of the current local world, even if it appears damaged.
  3. Move the selected backup file into the platform’s current world-file location, using the platform’s normal file-management method.
  4. Open Minecraft and check that the restored world appears and contains the expected builds and player data.

A local-world backup is not automatically a BDS-ready installation backup. When moving it to BDS, place the extracted world folder under worlds/ and set level-name to its folder name, then restore any required packs separately.

What a seed can—and cannot—recover

A seed can recreate the terrain-generation input for a world. It cannot restore structures players built, inventories, chests, maps, permissions, or other progress. If every world copy is gone, generating the same seed may produce familiar terrain, but it is a new world rather than a restoration. Use a seed as supplemental information in your notes, never as the only backup.

Choose the method that matches your risk

Method Control and retention Portability Recovery scope Main limitation
Self-hosted BDS folder copy You control the files, schedule, and retention. Copy the folder or ZIP to another device or BDS installation. Can include world data, configuration, allowlists, permissions, and packs. You must stop the server for a consistent capture and manage storage yourself.
Realm automatic backup Managed automatically, but backups are not retained indefinitely. Access begins in the Realm interface; download a local world for wider use. Restores a Realm world to a selected slot or provides a downloaded world. Older saves can disappear, and you do not control the retention period.
Local Bedrock manual backup You control the copy on the device and its storage. Move the backup file using the platform’s supported file workflow. Restores the local world represented by that file. Platform-specific storage and file handling can complicate recovery.
Seed only No saved progress or retention burden. Easy to record and share. Terrain generation only. Does not restore builds, inventories, or any player progress.

For a valuable self-hosted world, combine methods: keep the complete BDS backup set, retain an off-host copy, and record the seed as supplementary information. For a Realm, download periodic world files instead of relying solely on the automatic history.

Operational schedule and recovery checklist

When to capture a backup

  • Before installing or removing behavior packs and resource packs.
  • Before changing major server settings or moving to a new machine.
  • Before a large community build, map reset, or experimental command session.
  • After a milestone you would not want to recreate.
  • On a regular schedule suited to how much progress players create between captures.

There is no official Minecraft number for BDS backup frequency. Choose an interval by asking how much play time the community could realistically repeat after a failure.

Emergency restore checklist

  1. Stop the affected server or close Minecraft.
  2. Preserve the damaged or current files in a separate directory; do not overwrite your only evidence.
  3. Choose the newest backup that predates the damage and has a recorded version and add-on state.
  4. Restore the world folder and the configuration or packs required for that save.
  5. Match level-name to the restored folder name.
  6. Start privately and inspect builds, inventories, permissions, and add-on behavior.
  7. Only after verification, reconnect the normal player group and create a fresh post-restore backup.

Prevent common mistakes

  • Never copy a live world while players are changing blocks or inventories.
  • Never assume a successful ZIP operation proves the archive can be extracted.
  • Never delete the previous archive until a newer one has been checked.
  • Never restore only the seed when the goal is to recover progress.
  • Never rely on Realm history as your sole long-term archive.

Key points to remember

For BDS, the path from backup to recovery is deterministic: stop the server, read level-name, copy the matching folder under worlds/ with the needed configuration and packs, and keep a dated copy away from the host. For Realms, use the in-game download controls before a world is replaced and maintain your own files because automatic backups are not permanent. For local worlds, restore the manual file to the platform’s current world location. In every case, test a copy before disaster makes testing urgent.
