To recover a Jellyfin collection after a disk failure, deletion, migration, or upgrade problem, make two separate backups: copy every ripped movie file to independent storage, and back up Jellyfin’s database, configuration, and selected metadata. Jellyfin’s built-in backup is a server-state archive; its documented contents do not include the movie files themselves.

Start by inventorying every library path, measure the files you actually have, and choose a destination outside the original server’s failure domain. Then create a Jellyfin backup (or copy its data and configuration directories), move that archive away from the server, and verify that both the media copy and the server-state backup can be read and restored.

What a Jellyfin backup does—and does not—contain

The phrase “Jellyfin backup” can describe two different things. Your ripped Blu-rays are ordinary media files stored on one or more disks. Jellyfin’s own backup feature protects the application’s catalog and related server data. A complete recovery plan must address both datasets.

Data What to protect Jellyfin’s built-in archive
Ripped movie files The video files and their library folder structure The official backup guide does not list movie files as part of the archive; copy them separately.
Database Library records and server-state data Included automatically.
Metadata Posters, artwork and other downloaded or generated metadata Optional selection when creating the archive.
Subtitles Subtitle files managed with the library Optional selection.
Trickplay Generated trickplay data Optional selection.
Configuration Server settings and configuration files Protect with a manual copy of the configuration directory when you need a complete server-state copy.

The database normally uses SQLite at <Data Directory>/jellyfin.db. The actual data, configuration and backup locations depend on the operating system, installation method and any custom paths, so treat examples as clues rather than paths to copy blindly.

Inventory the entire library before copying anything

A library can draw files from several server locations. Missing one mount point creates a backup that looks complete but cannot restore the whole collection.

  1. List every library location. Review each library’s configured folders and record the disk, volume or network mount behind every path. Include removable and separately mounted disks.
  2. Record the source layout. Note the top-level folders and the way movies are organized. Keeping the same layout on the recovery storage makes it easier to reconnect paths later.
  3. Measure the actual data. Measure the movie folders, not the nominal capacity printed on a disc case. Include any subtitle or companion files you intend to keep with the media.
  4. Record growth and retention needs. Decide whether the destination will hold one current copy, several dated copies, or an additional off-site copy. The destination must cover the measured collection plus the space required by that plan.
  5. Write down the recovery details. Keep the library paths, mount names, Jellyfin version and backup location with the backup record. This information is valuable when the original server is unavailable.

Jellyfin’s storage documentation illustrates why a disc-size estimate is unreliable: a 50 GB Blu-ray remux might consume about 60 GB or as little as 15 GB after transcoding. That is an example from the Jellyfin Project, not a sizing rule for your files. Measure your own rips and leave room for the retention plan you selected.

Choose storage that survives the original failure

A second copy on the same server or the same physical disk does not protect against that disk’s failure. Select a destination according to separation, capacity, restore effort and how reliably you can monitor it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Destination type Separation from the original Capacity and expansion Restore considerations Operational effort
Direct-attached external drive Independent while disconnected or stored separately from the server Choose after measuring the library; expansion requires another drive or replacement Reconnect the drive and restore the original media paths or mount points Copy jobs and connection checks are your responsibility
Network storage Separate from the server, but still exposed if it shares the same site or power event May provide a larger or expandable storage pool; size it from the measured collection Re-establish the network share and mount path before reconnecting Jellyfin Requires network availability and monitoring of scheduled copies
Remote or cloud storage Can remain outside the site where the server is located Capacity follows the measured data and retention policy Media must be retrieved or mounted again, and Jellyfin paths must be restored Uploads, retrieval time and ongoing access depend on the service and your process

Jellyfin’s storage documentation mentions rclone as a popular way to integrate cloud storage with Jellyfin. That establishes an integration option, not proof that a synchronization job is a complete backup. A sync that mirrors deletions or corruption can remove the only recovery copy. Configure and retain a copy that matches the recovery outcome you need, and check that files remain available after the job finishes.

Jellyfin also cautions against using ZFS-formatted mechanical drives for Jellyfin server data other than media files because of poor performance. This is a narrow server-data performance warning, not a general prohibition on mechanical drives for storing media backups.

Use Jellyfin’s built-in backup for server state

The built-in backup feature is documented as available from Jellyfin 10.11 onward. Confirm the release running on your server before relying on the interface described below.

Create the archive in the web interface

  1. Open the Jellyfin web interface and go to Dashboard → Backups.
  2. Choose Create Backup.
  3. Select the optional data you want in the archive: metadata, subtitles and trickplay. The database is included automatically.
  4. Confirm that the destination has enough free space and start the backup.
  5. Wait for the zip archive to finish, then copy that zip away from the server’s primary storage. A backup left on the same disk does not help if that disk fails.
  6. Record the archive date, Jellyfin version and the storage location. Keep enough history to recover from an accidental deletion or a bad upgrade, rather than retaining only the newest file.

The guide’s free-space check may not account for unusually large subtitle or trickplay collections. If creation fails or the archive is unexpectedly large, check the destination’s free space and consider whether those optional datasets need to be included in every copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Know where the archive is written

The default backup directory varies by installation. Jellyfin documents these examples:

Installation Documented default backup directory
Official Docker image <volume path>/config/data/backups
LinuxServer.io Docker image <volume path>/config/data/data/backups
Debian or Ubuntu package /var/lib/jellyfin/data/backups
Windows service installation %PROGRAMDATA%JellyfinServerdatabackups

These are defaults, not a guarantee about your server. Check the configured data and backup paths, especially after moving a container volume or changing package settings. Copy the resulting zip to independent storage instead of treating the default directory as the final destination.

Make a manual copy of Jellyfin’s data and configuration

A manual copy is useful when you want a straightforward, complete snapshot of the server directories or when the built-in feature is unavailable in your installed release. Jellyfin’s documented procedure is to copy both the data and configuration directories to a dated, versioned backup location.

Identify the directories

On a Debian-style installation, Jellyfin gives /var/lib/jellyfin as the data directory and /etc/jellyfin as the configuration directory. Package defaults differ on other systems, and container deployments use the host directories mapped into the container. Confirm the paths for your installation before copying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The metadata database is normally <Data Directory>/jellyfin.db. Do not assume that copying a single database file is equivalent to copying the complete server state; include the full data and configuration directories called for by the installation.

Copy and label the snapshot

  1. Choose storage outside the server’s primary disk and create a directory named with the backup date and Jellyfin version.
  2. Copy the complete data directory and complete configuration directory into that dated location.
  3. Keep the original directory structure inside the snapshot so it can be placed back into the expected locations during recovery.
  4. Check that the copy completed and that the destination can read the files. Preserve the version information beside the snapshot.
  5. Move or copy the snapshot to a second failure domain when your recovery plan requires protection from theft, fire or a site-wide event.

A manual snapshot protects server state; it still does not replace the separate copy of the ripped movie files.

Copy the ripped Blu-ray files as a separate dataset

Use a file-copy or synchronization method appropriate for your operating system, but treat the media copy as an independent job from the Jellyfin archive.

  1. Prepare the destination with enough space for every inventoried library path and the retention policy.
  2. Copy each source path, including all disks and mounts, into the destination layout you recorded.
  3. Allow the copy to finish before disconnecting the source or destination. Do not assume that a job that started successfully copied every file.
  4. Check the result using the copy tool’s completion report and a comparison of source and destination file counts or sizes. Investigate errors rather than accepting a partial copy.
  5. Open representative files from the backup destination. A readable folder listing is not proof that the video data is usable.
  6. Keep at least one copy unavailable to ordinary deletion from the source system when practical. This limits the damage from an accidental delete or a synchronization mistake.

Preserve the folder structure and mount-point information you will need to reconnect the media after a server replacement. Jellyfin can only find the collection again when the replacement system exposes the files at paths you configure for its libraries.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a schedule around change and recovery needs

There is no universally correct copy interval or number of copies. Choose a schedule from how often the library changes and how much work you can afford to repeat after a failure.

  • New-rip workflow: run a media copy after importing a batch of discs, then confirm the new files exist on the destination.
  • Server-state workflow: create a Jellyfin archive or manual snapshot after meaningful configuration changes and before upgrades.
  • Retention workflow: keep dated versions when recovering from an accidental deletion or corrupted metadata is important; a single mirror may preserve the mistake instead of the earlier good state.
  • Monitoring workflow: check that scheduled jobs completed, that the destination remains reachable and that free space still covers expected growth.

Separate the copy job’s success from the destination’s availability. A network or cloud job can report completion while the only accessible copy remains in the same failure domain unless you deliberately place another copy elsewhere.

Always protect the collection before an upgrade

Take and retain a usable backup before upgrading Jellyfin. Jellyfin states that it has no downgrade mechanism and that migrations are applied when the new version starts. Its documentation puts the consequence plainly: “The only way to restore your active instance back to the old version is to restore a backup.”

Restore after a disk failure, migration or deletion

Restore the media storage first

On a replacement server, reconnect or restore the media copy and recreate the mount points or network paths recorded during inventory. Keep the library paths stable where possible. If a path must change, plan to update the corresponding Jellyfin library location after the files are available.

Restore a built-in archive

Jellyfin can restore a zip archive from the Backups view in the web interface. The web restore restarts the server and makes it unavailable while the operation runs. Schedule the operation for a time when clients can be disconnected.

The command-line alternative is to start Jellyfin with:

--restore-archive PATH_TO_BACKUP_ZIP

Use the path to the archive on the replacement system and follow the behavior documented for the Jellyfin version you are running.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore a manual directory snapshot

  1. Stop Jellyfin.
  2. Move the current data and configuration directories aside instead of deleting them. Keeping them temporarily provides a fallback if the selected snapshot is not the one you need.
  3. Copy the saved data and configuration directories into the expected locations and names for the installation.
  4. Check version compatibility. Jellyfin notes that restoring an older version may require downgrading the software.
  5. Start Jellyfin and confirm that the server loads the restored catalog and settings.

Do not overwrite a working recovery copy while troubleshooting. Preserve the original snapshot until you have confirmed both the server state and the media paths.

Verify that the backup is genuinely recoverable

A completed copy is only useful if it can be read and reconnected. Perform verification while the original server still works, not for the first time during an emergency.

  • Confirm that every inventoried library location has a corresponding destination copy.
  • Open sample movie files from each destination disk or share.
  • Confirm that the Jellyfin zip archive can be located and read, or that the manual data and configuration directories contain the expected files.
  • Check that the saved version information is present.
  • On a test or replacement instance, restore the server-state backup and verify that the catalog, selected metadata, subtitles and trickplay data appear when those options were included.
  • Reconnect the media paths and confirm that representative movies play from the restored storage.
  • Document any path, permission or version adjustment required so the next recovery is repeatable.

Troubleshoot common backup failures

The restored catalog is present but movies are missing

The Jellyfin archive protects server state, not the movie files listed in the official archive contents. Restore the separate media dataset and reconnect every library path, including paths on additional disks or mounts.

Only part of the collection was copied

Revisit the inventory. A library can span several server locations, so copying one top-level folder may omit another disk or mount. Compare the source list with the destination list and rerun the missing paths.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The built-in archive cannot be created

Check free space at the configured backup destination. Jellyfin warns that its minimum-space check may not cover large subtitle or trickplay backups. Free additional space, select only the optional data you need, or use a manual data-and-configuration snapshot.

The archive exists only on the failed disk

That is not an independent backup. Copy the zip to external, network or remote storage as part of the creation workflow, and retain a dated version away from the primary server.

A restore fails after an upgrade

Check the version recorded with the backup. Jellyfin migrations run when a new version starts, and restoring an older version may require downgrading the software. Stop before overwriting the only snapshot and follow the documented restore sequence for the compatible version.

A synchronization job removed the recovery copy

A mirror can reproduce deletions or corruption. Add dated retention or a separate destination that is not continuously exposed to source-side deletions, then verify that older files remain available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical two-part plan

For each backup cycle, complete these two independent checklists:

  • Media: inventory every library path, copy all ripped files, check completion, open sample videos and store the copy outside the original failure domain.
  • Jellyfin: create a zip from Dashboard → Backups → Create Backup with the optional datasets you need, or copy both data and configuration directories; label the version and date; move the result away from the server; and test a restore.

Keeping those tasks separate prevents the most common misunderstanding: a healthy Jellyfin database does not recreate a missing Blu-ray rip, and a folder full of movie files does not recreate Jellyfin’s catalog and configuration.
