The safest way to avoid a surprise food-delivery charge is to treat the checkout screen—not the menu subtotal, delivery badge, or promotion—as the price you are deciding to pay. Open the itemized breakdown, identify every required and optional line, check the final amount after tax and tip, and only then submit the order.
Fees vary by app, restaurant, location, order size, delivery distance, demand and membership status. The examples below show why two apparently similar orders can have different totals; they are not universal prices.
Why the menu subtotal is not your final price
A menu subtotal usually covers the food or other items in your basket before the app adds delivery, service, tax and other charges. Depending on the order, you may also see a small-order fee, a long-distance charge, a regulatory fee, a weather-related fee, an express-delivery charge, a tip or a membership adjustment.

The same restaurant can therefore cost different amounts at different times or for different addresses. A nearby courier may be unavailable, a minimum basket threshold may not be met, or local rules may trigger a separate charge. Apps can also show restaurant prices that differ from the restaurant’s own ordering channel.

A headline such as free delivery describes only one component. It does not necessarily remove service fees, taxes, tips or other applicable charges. The Federal Trade Commission’s April 2026 food-delivery announcement specifically raised questions about total prices, variable fees, optional charges, promotional conditions and differences between platform and restaurant prices.
The checkout routine that catches most surprises
Use this sequence for every order, especially when the basket is small, the delivery is urgent or a promotion is involved.
- Build the exact basket. Confirm quantities, sizes, modifiers, substitutions and any automatic add-ons. A changed quantity can affect both the subtotal and whether a small-order threshold applies.
- Open the price breakdown. Do not rely on the amount shown beside the restaurant or on a delivery banner. Expand the section that lists subtotal, delivery, service, taxes and other fees.
- Read each line by name. Decide whether it is required for this order, dependent on location or distance, or an option you selected. If an amount changes when you alter the address, delivery speed or basket value, note that condition.
- Review optional choices. Check delivery speed, express delivery, tip, packaging selections and any other preselected option. Remove an option you do not want rather than assuming it will disappear later.
- Check promotion terms. Confirm that the discount applies to this restaurant, basket value, delivery address and time. Look for minimums, excluded items, one-time limits and expiration dates.
- Verify the final payment amount. Compare the total on the last review screen with the amount you intended to spend. Make sure a membership trial, renewal or other recurring selection has not been added.
- Submit only after the total is acceptable. Save the receipt or take a screenshot if the app allows it, particularly when a promotion or unusual fee is involved.
If the app does not show a complete amount before payment, pause and use its help or support path rather than guessing. A missing explanation is a reason to compare another ordering channel.
What the common fee names mean
Names differ between services, but these categories explain most changes between a menu subtotal and the amount charged.

An app may group or rename these items, and its fee list can change. Treat the labels on your current checkout as controlling for that order.

How fees vary by app and market
DoorDash examples
DoorDash’s consumer help page describes a 2026 fee rollout in U.S. markets outside California, Chicago, Colorado, the District of Columbia, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York City, Puerto Rico and Seattle. In markets covered by that structure, the page lists a variable service fee, a merchant-dependent delivery fee and possible long-distance, regulatory-response, small-order and weather-impact fees. It also identifies express delivery as optional and lists estimated tax, optional tip and some mandatory government fees.
Where that 2026 structure has not rolled out, DoorDash says its service fee is 15% of the subtotal for most orders and 5% for most eligible DashPass restaurant orders. Those are DoorDash’s stated platform figures, not a market-wide standard. Your market, restaurant, order and membership eligibility can produce a different result, so verify the amount shown at checkout.
Uber Eats examples
Uber Eats states that delivery and service fees are separate from menu prices and vary with factors such as location, merchant, nearby courier availability and membership. Its help page says restaurant service fees vary by order and are between $2.50 and $6.50 on that page. This is a stated range, not a guarantee for every location or order.
Uber Eats presents separate descriptions for restaurant, retail and convenience orders. Do not transfer a retail or convenience fee example to a restaurant order. Read the category and amount displayed for your own basket; the service says applicable fees are visible at checkout.
Do not treat free delivery as a free order
A free-delivery promotion can remove the delivery line while leaving service fees, taxes, tips, small-order charges or other amounts. The FTC’s April 2026 announcement cited concerns about service fees associated with free-delivery offers. The agency also said it announced a $60 million settlement with Instacart in December 2025 over allegations that free-delivery advertising was followed by service fees not disclosed until checkout. That figure is an enforcement settlement amount, not evidence of how often consumers encounter a particular fee.

To test a promotion, compare the complete total with and without the offer when the app permits it. Then read the conditions: a minimum subtotal, selected merchants, a delivery-area limit, a one-time use restriction or an excluded item can make the advertised saving smaller than expected.

The useful comparison is the final price for the same basket and destination, not the item price or a single headline fee. When practical, perform a quick side-by-side check.

DoorDash says its help information has no service fees on pickup orders. That statement does not establish that every app or restaurant has no pickup-related charge, so inspect the pickup checkout rather than assuming the result.
For a fair comparison, use the same delivery address, basket, customizations, tip treatment and requested speed. Record the totals before switching apps; changing any one of those inputs can create a false saving.
Decide whether a delivery membership is worth it
A membership can reduce eligible delivery or service fees, but it is a recurring purchase with conditions. Evaluate it from your own order history rather than from a banner claiming that you could save a large amount.
- Find the recurring price. Note whether billing is monthly or annual, the first charge date and the renewal date.
- List eligible orders. Count only orders that meet the membership’s restaurant, subtotal, location and fee-eligibility requirements.
- Estimate real savings. For each eligible order, record the fee you would pay without the membership and the fee after the membership adjustment. Exclude taxes, tips and charges the membership does not waive.
- Subtract the membership cost. If the expected fee savings do not exceed the recurring price, the membership is not a saving for your expected use.
- Check non-price conditions. Look for minimum baskets, participating merchants, blackout areas, trial conversion, renewal and cancellation instructions.
- Confirm enrollment deliberately. Before accepting a trial or discount, verify that you want the recurring service and know how to cancel it.
Do not join solely to avoid one unusually high fee unless the terms and cancellation timing make that decision sensible. Recalculate if your ordering frequency, address or preferred restaurants changes.

Prevent recurring or unauthorized charges
Unexpected costs are not limited to a single delivery. A trial can convert to a paid membership, a saved payment method can be charged for a renewal, or an order can include an option you did not intend to select.
- Read the enrollment screen for the trial length, price after the trial and renewal interval.
- Save the confirmation showing whether enrollment succeeded and the next billing date.
- Set a calendar reminder before renewal if you are testing the service.
- Review the account’s membership page after cancellation and retain the confirmation number or email.
- Monitor your card or bank statement for the merchant name, amount and date you authorized.
- If a charge is unfamiliar, first compare it with the receipt and account history, then contact the app through its official support process and your card issuer’s dispute process when appropriate.
The FTC announced a 2025 lawsuit against Uber concerning alleged unwanted Uber One enrollment, billing before a trial ended and difficult cancellation. Those are allegations in a court case, not proven findings. The practical lesson is to verify trial and renewal terms and keep cancellation records.

In April 2026, the FTC sought public comment on whether rulemaking is needed for unfair or deceptive fee practices in online food and grocery delivery. The topics listed in the announcement include the total price, the nature and purpose of charges, variable fees, optional versus mandatory costs, promotion conditions, price differences and unauthorized billing. A May 14, 2026 FTC legal-library entry records the related advance notice of proposed rulemaking and comment-period statement.

The FTC’s separate May 2025 FAQ about its Rule on Unfair or Deceptive Fees says covered businesses must clearly disclose the final payment amount before asking for payment and explain excluded charges. Its examples include tickets and lodging; the FAQ should not be treated as a finalized rule specifically governing every food-delivery app.
The FTC also says it obtained a $25 million settlement with Grubhub in December 2024 over allegations that it misled consumers about delivery costs. Like the Instacart amount, this is an enforcement settlement figure, not an industry average or a measure of how frequently fees occur.

Christopher Mufarrige, director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, summarized the agency’s pricing principle in the April 2026 announcement: “Clear and truthful pricing is essential to competitive markets.” Until any future rule changes the requirements, your own checkout review remains the most dependable way to know what a particular order will cost.
What to do when the total still looks wrong
Before payment
Stop if a fee has no understandable label, the total changes after you select payment, a promotion is missing, or a membership appears without your deliberate choice. Reopen every expandable section, remove optional speed or tip selections, and compare pickup or the restaurant’s channel. If the app cannot present a clear final amount, do not submit that order.

After payment but before delivery
Capture the receipt and order details. Check whether the app permits cancellation without a charge and whether changing the basket would alter the fee. Avoid placing a duplicate order while the first one is unresolved; two valid authorizations can appear even when one is later reversed.
After delivery
Compare the final receipt with the amount authorized at checkout. Distinguish a temporary card authorization from the settled transaction, as the displayed amount can change when a tip or adjustment is finalized. Contact the app with the order number and itemized discrepancy. If the merchant or app cannot resolve an unauthorized or incorrect charge, ask your payment provider about its dispute procedure and deadlines.
A quick decision framework
- Order now: The final total is itemized, the promotion is confirmed, optional charges are intentional and the price is acceptable.
- Switch channel: The same basket is materially cheaper through pickup, the restaurant or another app after all fees.
- Change the order: A small-order, distance, weather or express fee is disproportionate; remove an option, increase the basket only with items you actually need, or choose a closer merchant.
- Wait: A temporary demand or weather fee is the main difference and the food is not urgent.
- Do not enroll: The membership’s recurring cost, eligibility limits or cancellation terms are unclear, or expected savings do not exceed its price.
The dependable habit is simple: compare the complete amount for the exact order, inspect every line, treat promotions and memberships as conditional, and keep a record of what you approved.
