The reliable way to avoid stripping a tiny electronics screw is to use the exact head type and the largest driver size that fits it snugly, then turn slowly with the driver straight and fully seated. Keep steady downward pressure, start with light force, and stop the moment the bit slips or begins to lift. Tiny phone and tablet screws need very little tightening force, so forcing a poor fit usually causes more damage than it solves.
Why tiny electronics screws strip so easily
A screw head transmits turning force through a small recess. If the driver does not fill that recess, the contact area is reduced and the tip can ride up the angled surfaces instead of turning the screw. The same thing happens when the shaft is tilted, the tip is only partly inserted, or the driver is worn. Once the recess starts to deform, the next attempt has even less to grip.
The first movement of a stuck screw is especially risky. Breaking the screw free may require more turning force than continuing an already-loose screw, and that extra force can make a poorly seated bit cam out. Treat the initial breakaway as a controlled operation rather than a test of strength.

Choose the right driver before touching the screw
Match the head design
Identify the recess before selecting a bit. Electronics commonly use Phillips, Torx, tri-wing, flathead and other proprietary or less-common patterns. A driver that looks close may still contact only a few points inside the recess. The device guide may call out a particular head that is difficult to identify by eye, so check the guide rather than relying on appearance.
iFixit’s screwdriver guidance recommends matching both the type and the size. Do not substitute a different head merely because it can be pushed into the opening; a mismatch concentrates force on the edges and accelerates damage.
Compare adjacent sizes
When two sizes seem plausible, test them without turning the screw. Compare the likely bit with the next size up and down. Select the largest bit that seats completely and snugly in the recess. The correct tip should not rock noticeably from side to side, and it should not bottom out on a central post or fail to reach the recess walls.

A bit that is too large will not enter fully. One that is too small may enter but leave play around the tip. Either condition can slip under torque. “It fits” is not enough; the fit must remain secure when you apply light downward pressure.
Inspect the tip’s condition
Use an unworn, undamaged driver. A bent shaft makes perpendicular alignment difficult, while a rounded, chipped or deformed tip cannot maintain the intended contact surfaces. Wipe away debris and inspect the tip under good light. If the bit has been used heavily or visibly altered, choose another one before testing the screw.
Use a set when the model is uncertain
An interchangeable electronics precision screwdriver set can be practical because it offers several head types and sizes in one place. It is not a guarantee that every proprietary screw is covered. Confirm the bit specified by your device’s repair guide before buying or opening the set. The iFixit EDU tools and materials reference describes the general role of interchangeable precision bits without establishing a universal selection for every device.

Prepare the work area and screw
Expose the head completely
Remove dust, adhesive residue and loose material from around the screw so the bit can reach the recess. Keep the device stable on a clean, non-slip surface. A stable workpiece lets you apply downward pressure without pushing the device away from the driver.
Check for obstructions
Make sure a cable, bracket or case edge is not forcing the driver to approach at an angle. If the available space prevents a perpendicular grip, reposition the device or use a driver whose shaft and handle provide a straighter path. Do not solve an access problem by leaning the tip against one side of the recess.
Confirm the screw is the one you intend to turn
Small electronics often contain screws of similar appearance but different lengths or thread specifications. Identify the fastener using the device’s repair instructions before removing it. The prevention technique cannot compensate for turning the wrong screw or trying to remove a captive fastener that is designed to remain in place.
The controlled technique that prevents stripping
- Identify the head and specification. Consult the repair guide for the device and note the required driver type and size.
- Inspect the driver. Reject a bent, rounded, chipped or otherwise damaged tip.
- Test neighboring sizes. Compare the likely bit with the next size up and down. Select the largest one that enters fully and feels snug.
- Align the shaft. Hold the driver perpendicular to the screw head. Keep the shaft on the screw’s axis rather than leaning toward an edge.
- Seat the tip completely. Press the bit into the recess until all of the available contact surfaces are engaged. Do not begin turning while the tip is only partly inserted.
- Start with light force. Apply just enough downward pressure to keep the bit fully in place, then begin turning slowly. Andrew Goldheart, an iFixit product engineer, summarizes the approach: “Start off with light force, just enough to keep the bit fully in place, then turn.” Read the full explanation in iFixit’s guide to stopping stripped screws.
- Maintain engagement while turning. Keep steady downward pressure and a straight shaft. Increase pressure only enough to prevent the bit from rising; do not compensate for a poor fit with force.
- Pause at the first sign of trouble. If the tip slips, lifts, rocks or starts chewing the recess, stop immediately. Remove the driver and reassess the type, size, seating, alignment and condition of the screw.
For a screw that turns freely, continue with the same controlled motion. Tiny screws do not need a strong grip to be secure, and excessive tightening during reassembly can damage the screw, the threads or the surrounding part.
How to handle a stuck screw without camming out
Set up for the initial breakaway
Before applying extra turning force, verify that the bit is the correct size, fully seated and straight. Stabilize the device so your downward pressure does not move it. Begin with a small, deliberate turn rather than a sudden twist. The goal is to keep the tip engaged as the screw first starts moving.
Use pressure to maintain contact, not to force a mismatch
Steady downward pressure can keep a properly matched bit from climbing out of the recess. It cannot make an undersized, oversized or incorrect bit fit. If the driver begins to rise, stop turning, reset it and check the selection again. Continuing while it is slipping rounds the recess and makes later removal harder.

Know when to stop
A screw that will not turn easily is a signal to reassess, not an invitation to use more strength. Stop if the head starts deforming, the driver twists without moving the screw, or you cannot keep the shaft straight. Never use the screwdriver as a pry bar or chisel; side loading can damage both the tool and the device.
Reassembly: avoid stripping a screw you just removed
Use the same head and size when reinstalling the fastener. Start the screw gently and keep the driver perpendicular so the threads can engage without cross-threading. Once the screw is seated, use very little tightening force for tiny phone and tablet screws. A small fastener does not become safer because it is tightened as hard as possible.
Follow the model-specific repair instructions for the final seating point or torque method if one is provided. General guidance cannot supply a universal torque value, and substituting a personal “tight enough” standard can crack plastic mounts, distort brackets or damage delicate boards.
What to do when the bit starts slipping
Use this immediate response whenever the driver rises out of the recess or the tip begins to skate:
- Stop turning at once; do not keep applying torque while the bit is slipping.
- Lift the driver away and inspect the recess for fresh damage or debris.
- Check whether the bit is too large or too small, then test the neighboring size without turning.
- Confirm that the head type matches the screw and that the tip is fully seated.
- Re-align the shaft perpendicular to the screw.
- Try again with light force and only enough downward pressure to maintain engagement.
This sequence follows the practical stop-and-reassess advice in iFixit’s troubleshooting guidance. If the recess is visibly deteriorating after a second careful attempt, stop rather than turning a partially damaged head into a fully stripped one.
If the screw is already damaged
Try a better-fitting driver first
For a lightly damaged recess, test a slightly different size and select the one that catches the remaining surfaces most securely. A flathead driver may sometimes catch on the surviving edges of a damaged cross or star-shaped recess. Use minimal turning force and keep the shaft straight.

Reserve invasive methods for last resort removal
If no driver can engage, a rotary tool can be used to cut a slot for a flathead driver. This creates metal or composite debris and can damage nearby components, so it is an invasive recovery technique rather than routine prevention. Protect the device, control the cutting operation and use it only when the less-destructive options have failed. The removal methods are outlined in iFixit’s stripped-screw removal guide.
Do not escalate to cutting simply because the screw feels tight. Recheck the bit specification and seating first; many apparent “stuck screw” problems are actually fit or alignment problems.
Driver options and the trade-offs that matter
The useful comparison is not a brand name or a large bit count. It is whether the driver gives you the correct engagement and the control to keep it straight.
| Option | Strength | Limitation to check | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single fixed precision driver | Simple, rigid setup with no bit change | Provides only one head type and size | A device with a known, commonly available specification |
| Interchangeable precision bit set | Several head types and sizes in one kit | Coverage is not universal; the model guide still determines the required bit | Repairs involving multiple devices or uncertain bit choices |
| Short-access driver | Can fit where a long shaft or large handle cannot | May make perpendicular alignment harder in a recessed location | Confined spaces where it can still be held straight |
| Longer-shaft precision driver | Can reach a deeply recessed screw | Requires stable support to avoid flexing or tilting | Deep access with a clear, straight approach |
Whatever format you choose, the decisive tests remain head compatibility, snug size, undamaged tip and perpendicular access. A larger kit does not replace model-specific documentation.

Using the closest-looking bit
Symptom: The tip enters but rocks or slips as soon as you turn. Fix: Identify the head pattern again and compare adjacent sizes. Use the largest bit that seats snugly, not the one that merely fits into the opening.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsStarting at an angle
Symptom: One side of the recess shows wear, or the driver walks toward an edge. Fix: Reposition the device or change the handle and shaft arrangement so the driver is perpendicular before applying torque.

Pressing harder instead of reseating
Symptom: The screw remains stationary while the recess gets chewed up. Fix: Stop, lift the driver, inspect the tip and check the size and type. More force cannot correct a mismatch.
Continuing after the first slip
Symptom: A recess that was usable becomes rounded within seconds. Fix: Treat any slip or lift as an immediate stop condition. Re-engage only after the cause is identified.
Overtightening during reassembly
Symptom: The screw suddenly becomes hard to turn at the end, or a plastic mount flexes. Fix: Stop using force and follow the device’s instructions for final seating. Tiny screws generally require very little tightening force.
Using the screwdriver as a lever
Symptom: The shaft bends or the recess is damaged sideways. Fix: Keep the tool for axial turning only. Use an appropriate separate prying tool when the repair procedure calls for one.
A compact checklist before every tiny-screw turn
- Have I identified the exact head type from the device documentation?
- Did I compare the likely bit with the adjacent sizes?
- Is this the largest bit that seats fully and snugly?
- Is the tip unworn, straight and undamaged?
- Can I hold the shaft perpendicular in the available space?
- Is the screw head clear of debris and fully accessible?
- Am I prepared to start with light force and steady downward pressure?
- Will I stop immediately if the bit slips, lifts or begins damaging the recess?
Limits of general advice
These practices reduce the most common causes of stripping, but they do not establish a failure rate or a universal torque specification. Exact screw type, driver size, access constraints and final tightening requirements vary by device and edition. When the manufacturer or repair guide specifies a less-common bit or a particular procedure, that information takes precedence over a general technique.
The safest habit is therefore procedural: identify the screw, select the largest snug-fitting undamaged driver, seat it completely, keep it straight, turn gently and stop at the first sign of disengagement. That approach protects both the fastener and the surrounding electronics while leaving you a recoverable option if the screw is unusually tight.
