Before paying an unfamiliar seller during a live sale, verify the seller and the exact item, get the price and terms in writing, and use a payment route with a dispute process. A Facebook or Instagram profile—or a stream hosted there—does not by itself mean the purchase is covered by platform purchase protection. Coverage depends on the seller, item, checkout method, location, and current terms.
Why a live-sale offer deserves a separate check
A live stream can make a seller feel familiar and a deal feel urgent, but neither is proof that the seller is legitimate or that an item will arrive as described. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) warns that scammers can use fake profiles, take over accounts, or exploit trust within a community. A web address beginning with https encrypts the connection; it does not verify the seller.
That distinction matters when a seller has an engaging stream, a polished profile, or an audience that seems to vouch for them. Those signals may help you find information to check, but they cannot substitute for checking the seller, item, terms, and payment route. An account that appears established or has positive reviews is not guaranteed safe, either.

The FTC reported in 2026 that more than 40% of people who lost money to a social-media scam in 2025 said they ordered something they saw in a social-media ad. Shopping scams were the most reported type among people who said they lost money to a social-media scam. Those figures do not isolate Instagram Live or Facebook Live purchases. In a separate historical snapshot, the FTC said almost $117 million was reported lost to scams that started on social media in the first half of 2020; more than one-quarter of reports about such scams concerned online sellers who did not deliver. That is not a current prevalence estimate.

Online shopping scams were the second-most reported type of scam to the FTC in 2022, according to the agency’s 2023 guidance. That is a dated ranking of reports, not a claim about today’s ranking or a live-sale-specific trend. Meta reported removing over 159 million scam ads for policy violations and taking down 10.9 million Facebook and Instagram accounts associated with criminal scam centers in 2025. These are Meta’s enforcement figures, not a measure of how many live-sale offers are fraudulent or a guarantee that a buyer will receive a warning or reimbursement.
Check the seller and offer before paying
Look beyond the profile and star rating
- Search the seller’s or business’s name with terms such as “scam,” “complaint,” and “review.” Check more than one source and look at recent reviews and reviewer histories; ratings can be fake or misleading. A pattern of detailed, recent complaints deserves attention, but a lack of complaints is not proof that a new or little-known seller is trustworthy.
- Check whether the account or business appears established and whether its contact information is coherent. Compare the name and details in the profile with the information provided at checkout. Neither age nor a history of positive reviews guarantees safety.
- Look for a clear item description, the seller’s contact details, shipping costs, and written refund or return terms. Sale items may have different or stricter return rules. If a return policy is missing, vague, or seems to change between the stream and checkout, ask the seller to clarify it in writing before paying.
- Be cautious if an expensive item is offered at an unusually low price, the seller avoids specific questions, or the details change during the stream or in later messages. A seller who will not answer a straightforward question about condition, delivery, or returns is giving you less information to assess the deal.
These checks are not a certification process. The goal is to uncover inconsistencies and make sure you understand what is being sold and what the seller promises. The FTC’s marketplace guidance advises buyers to examine seller information and policies before purchasing, rather than treating marketplace presence as a substitute for due diligence.
Get the exact deal in writing
For used, vintage, refurbished, or high-value goods, ask for clear photos of the actual item rather than relying only on promotional images or what is visible briefly on camera. Compare those photos and the written description with what the seller promised during the live stream. Photos can help clarify condition and identity, but they do not independently establish that the seller owns the item or will ship it.

Ask unresolved questions in a message and keep the seller’s answer. If a promise is made verbally during the stream, request written confirmation before paying. This gives you a clear point of comparison if the item does not arrive or is materially different from the description.
Check the final checkout screen as well as the live offer. Confirm that the item, amount, shipping charge, and delivery estimate match what you were told. If anything is missing or different, pause and ask for an explanation; do not rely on a verbal assurance that the checkout details will be corrected later. Save the final terms and order confirmation.

Pause when the seller creates pressure
Urgency, a request to move the transaction off-platform, or insistence on a hard-to-reverse payment method are reasons to stop and reassess. A limited-time offer is not a reason to skip basic checks. If the seller says the item will only be reserved if you pay immediately, take the time to confirm the seller, terms, and payment route rather than letting the countdown make the decision for you.
Meta describes advance-payment scams in which a seller stops responding after receiving payment, as well as overpayment or refund scams based on a false payment claim. Do not send money back or pay an extra fee based only on a screenshot, message, or claim that a payment was made; verify the transaction directly through your payment provider. A message claiming to be from a payment service or platform should also be checked independently rather than trusted because it uses a familiar logo or name.

First identify who processes the payment: a marketplace or platform checkout, the seller directly, or a separate payment service. Then read the current rules for that specific route. Marketplace operators differ: some leave payment, delivery, returns, and refunds to the buyer and seller; others offer a process for certain non-delivery or not-as-described cases. Do not assume that a seller, item, or payment qualifies just because the offer appeared on Facebook or Instagram.
The FTC’s marketplace advice puts the check plainly: “Before you buy from any online marketplace, check the seller’s rules about refunds and returns, see who can help if you have a problem, and make sure they let you pay with a safe payment method.” A purchase may be promoted in a social post or live stream but completed elsewhere. What matters for recourse is the actual transaction: who took the payment, what policy applies, and whether that exact purchase meets the policy’s conditions.
| Route or payment method | What to check | Important limit |
|---|---|---|
| Marketplace checkout | Read the marketplace’s current rules for the seller, item, location, payment route, and problems it handles. | Marketplace policies differ; a platform may not handle every return, refund, or delivery dispute. (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace) |
| Direct or off-platform payment | Confirm which payment provider processes the charge and what dispute process it offers. Check whether leaving the marketplace affects any marketplace help. | A promotion or conversation on a social platform does not establish purchase-protection eligibility. (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace) |
| Credit card | Keep the statement, order confirmation, and evidence of the offer; contact the issuer promptly if a qualifying problem occurs. | Some billing errors may be handled under the Fair Credit Billing Act process; deadlines and eligibility depend on the dispute. (FTC: Online Shopping) |
| Gift card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency | Stop if a seller insists on one of these methods for an ordinary purchase; ask for a safer payment option instead. | The FTC warns against these methods because it can be difficult to recover the money. Available recourse varies by payment method and transaction. (FTC: Buying From an Online Marketplace) |
The FTC recommends safer methods such as credit cards. It says: “Paying by credit card best protects you and your money in case of a scam, or if something else goes wrong.” A credit-card purchase can generally be disputed for qualifying problems such as being charged twice, not receiving merchandise, or receiving the wrong or a defective item. That is not a promise that every charge can be reversed: the particular transaction must qualify under the issuer’s and applicable rules, and you need to act within the relevant deadline.

For the Fair Credit Billing Act billing-error process described on the FTC’s Online Shopping page, call the issuer promptly and send a letter that reaches the issuer within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. Do not apply that specific deadline automatically to every payment dispute, debit-card purchase, payment app, platform process, or country. Ask your provider which process fits your transaction, what documentation it needs, and when it must receive your dispute.

Gift cards, wire transfers, and cryptocurrency are different from paying by credit card: the FTC warns that these can be difficult ways to recover money if a seller is dishonest. If a seller insists on one of them, treat that as a reason to stop rather than assuming the platform or provider can undo the payment later. A payment method alone does not establish that a transaction is covered; check the provider’s current rules for the exact purchase.
Keep a compact record before and after checkout
Save evidence while the offer is still visible. A live stream or social post may later be difficult to find, and written records make it easier to explain what was promised. Organize the records so you can quickly show the difference between the offer, the order, and the outcome if you need to contact the seller, marketplace, or payment provider.
- The seller’s profile name, business name, and available contact details.
- The live-sale offer, product description, condition, and any relevant photos or screenshots.
- The written price, shipping cost, delivery estimate, and return or refund terms.
- Your messages with the seller, including answers to questions and any changed promises.
- The order confirmation, receipt, payment record, tracking details, and delivery information.
Keep the original messages and documents where possible. If the item differs from the offer, preserve evidence of both: what the seller represented before payment and what you received. If the order does not arrive, retain the available delivery information and your communications asking the seller about it. If the seller changes a promise or gives a new explanation, save that exchange rather than relying on memory.
What to do if the item never arrives or is materially different
- Contact the seller promptly. State the problem clearly, refer to the written offer or order details, and ask for a specific remedy. Keep the message and any response. For a missing order, identify the purchase and delivery details; for an item that differs, explain the specific mismatch with the promised description or condition.
- Contact the marketplace, if one handled the transaction. Follow its current process and deadlines for non-delivery, an incorrect item, or a material difference from the description. Keep copies of the case details. Do not assume the marketplace’s policy applies if you paid the seller separately; check which route handled the transaction.
- Contact your payment provider quickly. Ask how to dispute the transaction and what evidence and deadlines apply to your payment method. For a credit-card billing error covered by the FTC’s described Fair Credit Billing Act process, call promptly and send a letter that reaches the issuer within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. That specific 60-day instruction should not be assumed to apply to every payment dispute, debit-card purchase, payment app, platform process, or country.
- Report suspected fraud through the appropriate channels. Use the platform’s reporting process and report fraud to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. USAGov also lists state consumer-protection offices among routes for complaints about online purchases: Where to file a complaint about an online purchase.
The FTC advises buyers to contact the seller immediately if an online order does not arrive or is not as described, then contact the marketplace and payment provider if the issue remains unresolved. Eligibility and timing depend on the payment method and details of the purchase. Its guidance on what to do when online shopping goes wrong is at Shopping online? The purpose of reporting is to alert the relevant service or authority and document the suspected conduct. Keep copies of any reports, case numbers, or replies alongside your purchase records.

Meta says Messenger may display warnings in some situations, including requests or offers to pay before shipping, requests for instant payment, or signals associated with suspicious accounts. Treat a warning as a reason to pause, not as a complete screening system: a warning may not appear, and its presence or absence does not determine whether a transaction is covered or recoverable. The warnings Meta describes are examples of tools and risks, not a guarantee that every live-sale buyer will see an alert.
Meta’s Safety Centre advises people to slow down, spot-check suspicious messages, and verify messages that claim to come from Meta or another legitimate organization rather than clicking links or attachments. Use the platform’s own reporting tools for suspicious profiles, messages, or offers; avoid relying on links sent by the person you are evaluating. Read Meta’s guidance on avoiding investment and payment scams online and its Safety Centre tips to avoid phishing and scams.
Meta’s description of an advance-payment scam gives one possible pattern: “After receiving payment, the scammer stops responding to contact and does not send the purchased item.” This is Meta’s example of a scam scenario, not a finding about every seller who asks for payment before shipping. Use it as a reminder to check the terms and payment route before sending money, not as a substitute for assessing the specific offer.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does buying during an Instagram or Facebook Live sale mean I have purchase protection?
No. Promotion on Facebook or Instagram does not by itself establish coverage. Check the current terms for the exact seller, item, checkout method, and location. Marketplace policies differ, and direct or off-platform payment may not follow the marketplace’s process.
What payment method is safest for an unfamiliar live-sale seller?
The FTC recommends safer methods such as credit cards and says credit-card payment best protects buyers if a scam or other problem occurs. A dispute is not guaranteed: eligibility and deadlines depend on the transaction and the issuer’s rules. Be especially cautious if a seller insists on gift cards, wire transfers, or cryptocurrency, which can be difficult ways to recover money.
What should I save before paying?
Keep the seller’s name and contact details, the offer and item description, photos, condition, total price, shipping cost, delivery estimate, return or refund terms, and messages confirming any promises. After paying, retain the order confirmation, receipt, payment record, tracking details, and delivery information.

Contact the seller promptly and keep a record. If that does not resolve the issue, follow the marketplace’s process if it handled the transaction, then contact your payment provider quickly to ask about its dispute procedure and deadline. Report suspected fraud through the platform and, in the United States, at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.
Does the 60-day credit-card deadline apply to every payment dispute?
No. The FTC describes a Fair Credit Billing Act billing-error process in which a letter must reach the issuer within 60 days of the first bill showing the error. Do not assume that deadline applies to every payment dispute, debit-card purchase, payment app, platform process, or country. Confirm the rules and timing with your provider.
The Bottom Line
Before paying in a live sale, verify the seller and item, get the full offer and terms in writing, and check who processes payment and what current policy applies. Prefer a payment route with a dispute process, save the evidence, and act promptly if the item never arrives or differs from the offer. A social-media profile or stream alone is not proof of legitimacy or purchase protection.
