Short answer: Treat an unsolicited claim that you are cursed, possessed, or spiritually blocked—especially one followed by a demand for repeated payment—as a high-risk fraud signal. Curses and paid “cleansing” results are unproven. Do not send cash, gold, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payment-app payments, account credentials, or personal financial details. Stop the contact, verify the person independently, ask someone you trust to review the offer, and report suspected fraud through official channels.
What a curse-removal scam usually looks like
The classic pattern starts with fear. A person contacts you unexpectedly through a direct message, phone call, text, social-media comment, email, or an in-person encounter and claims to detect an evil curse, spirit, blockage, or other supernatural cause for your problems. The person then says that only a paid ritual or cleansing can remove it.
The International Association of Chiefs of Police describes the pattern this way: “The psychic convinces you that you have an evil curse or evil spirits that must be ‘cleansed.’ Cleansing is an ongoing process that requires you to pay thousands of dollars in cash, jewelry, vehicles, etc.” The description appears in the IACP Identity Crime Toolkit for Police Executives, hosted by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation.

Fraudsters may first request a modest payment, then announce that the curse is deeper than expected and requires another ritual. They can ask for a detailed account of your savings, investments, property, debts, relationships, or family members. Once they know what you own, they may connect the alleged curse to your money and tell you to liquidate assets for cleansing.

Common escalation tactics
- Urgency: You are told that harm, illness, financial loss, or relationship failure will occur unless you pay immediately.
- Exclusivity: The person insists that only they can help or that another adviser will “break” the process.
- Secrecy: You are instructed not to tell a partner, relative, bank, therapist, police officer, or religious leader.
- Ever-rising fees: Each payment supposedly reveals another layer of the curse or a new item needed for the ritual.
- Asset demands: The request expands from a card payment to cash, jewelry, gold coins, a vehicle, investments, loans, or access to an account.
- Trust-building refunds: A small amount may be returned to make later, much larger requests seem safe.
A transparent spiritual adviser cannot prove that a supernatural condition exists or guarantee that a paid ritual will change your life. The safest decision is based on verifiable conduct—identity, terms, payment method, pressure, and data requests—not on whether the person uses spiritual language.
Why the supernatural claim should not control your financial decision
Government and police sources document the fraud mechanism and the resulting financial harm; they do not establish that curses or spirits are real, detectable, or removable for a fee. A frightening explanation can feel persuasive when you are grieving, ill, lonely, anxious, or facing money and relationship problems. Those circumstances do not make an extraordinary claim verifiable.
Separate the emotional issue from the transaction. You can seek support from a trusted friend, qualified counselor, doctor, clergy member, or consumer-protection office without surrendering money or property to someone who claims supernatural powers. A legitimate helper should tolerate questions, independent checking, and time to decide.

Red flags that mean you should stop before paying
One warning sign can justify ending the conversation; several together indicate a likely scam. Do not continue simply because you have already made a small payment or disclosed personal information.
- The contact was unsolicited and claims to have discovered a curse from a photograph, name, social-media profile, or brief conversation.
- The person predicts imminent harm or says that delay will make the curse permanent.
- You are told to keep the service secret or to distrust everyone who questions it.
- The provider refuses to give a legal name, business identity, physical address, written scope of work, total price, or cancellation and refund terms.
- The fee is open-ended, rises until the curse is “gone,” or depends on whatever the provider says they discover next.
- You are promised guaranteed results, a specific romantic or financial outcome, or certainty that cannot be tested.
- You are asked for cash, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, payment-app transfers, gold, jewelry, a vehicle, investment proceeds, or a loan.
- You are asked to share online-banking credentials, one-time passcodes, debit-card PINs, remote-computer access, copies of identity documents, or full financial statements.
- The person becomes hostile when you say you need independent advice or time to think.
- The “service” exists only in a messaging app, uses disposable accounts, or provides an address that cannot be independently verified.
Consumer.gov advises that scammers tell people to hurry and says gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency, and payment apps are favored because they function much like cash and can be difficult to recover. Its practical instruction is: “Take your time.”
Compare an offer before you consider any payment
Use this checklist as a stop-or-proceed screen. “Not stated” is not a neutral result: if a provider will not disclose a basic term, do not pay.

How to test a service safely
- End unsolicited contact. Do not reply to unexpected messages or click links in a profile that claims to detect a curse. Save the profile and message first if you may need evidence, then block the account and report it on the platform.
- Request written terms. Ask for the provider’s identity, business address, exact services, total fees, payment schedule, cancellation process, refund policy, and a realistic statement of limits. Keep the request in writing.
- Refuse an open-ended commitment. A statement that the price will increase until the curse is removed is a reason to stop, not a reason to negotiate.
- Verify independently. Search the name, business registration, address, phone number, and complaints using sources you find yourself. Do not rely on links, testimonials, or telephone numbers supplied by the person who contacted you.
- Take a cooling-off period. Tell the provider you will decide later. A legitimate service can wait; threats, guilt, or a “last chance” offer confirm the pressure tactic.
- Use a second set of eyes. Show the offer and any contract to a trusted friend, family member, counselor, attorney, religious leader, or consumer-protection office before paying.
- Protect your assets. Do not liquidate investments, take out a loan, sell a vehicle, withdraw retirement funds, or hand over gold or jewelry because of a supernatural claim.
- Protect your accounts. Never disclose passwords, one-time authentication codes, card PINs, online-banking access, or remote-device control. No cleansing service needs those credentials.
Payment methods and why they matter
Payment choice changes your ability to stop or reverse a loss, but no method makes an unproven curse claim legitimate. Cash, gold, jewelry, vehicles, gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers, and many payment-app transfers can move quickly and may be difficult to recover. A card or bank transfer may offer a dispute or fraud process, but you must contact the issuer or institution promptly and provide accurate details.

Never send a “refundable deposit” to prove that you are serious, buy gift cards and read the numbers aloud, transfer cryptocurrency to a wallet supplied in a chat, or allow a stranger to move money through your account. Do not accept a request to hold funds for cleansing and then forward part of them elsewhere; that can expose you to additional loss and account restrictions.
A documented case shows how losses can escalate
In a U.S. Department of Justice press release dated June 10, 2026, prosecutors described a Washington case in which one victim sent more than $2 million to a person presented as a “psychic” for cleansing an alleged curse. The release says an indictment alleges that at least $2.5 million was stolen from at least three victims between April 2021 and July 2024.

The alleged conduct included asking victims for a detailed accounting of their financial holdings, saying the curse was tied to money, directing them to liquidate assets, and requesting gold coins or cash for cleansing. The release also says small amounts were returned to build trust. First Assistant U.S. Attorney Charles Neil Floyd said: “Ms. Evans preyed upon their needs, convincing victims that she could ‘remove a curse’ and help them find love. In truth her scheme was simply to help herself to their wealth, leaving them further devastated.”
These are allegations, not findings of guilt; defendants are presumed innocent. The case nevertheless illustrates why requests for your asset inventory, liquidation of holdings, physical valuables, repeated payments, and secrecy deserve immediate attention.

Act quickly, but do not pay more to “finish” the cleansing or to unlock a refund. Additional payments rarely solve the original loss and can provide the fraudster with more information.

- End the interaction. Stop responding, block the contact, and do not agree to another ritual, verification fee, tax, donation, or release charge.
- Preserve evidence. Save advertisements, usernames, profile links, messages, voicemails, contracts, invoices, receipts, transaction IDs, wallet addresses, bank details, phone numbers, dates, and the exact promises made. Export or photograph material before deleting an account.
- Call the payment provider immediately. Contact your bank, card issuer, payment app, gift-card company, wire service, or cryptocurrency exchange using contact information from its official website or the back of your card. Explain that you were defrauded and ask what reversal, freeze, recall, or fraud process is available. For gift cards, retain the card and receipt and report the numbers as compromised.
- Secure accounts. Change passwords that may have been exposed, beginning with email and banking. Use unique passwords and enable multi-factor authentication. Sign out unknown sessions, remove unfamiliar devices, and review forwarding rules and recovery addresses.
- Watch for identity misuse. Review bank, card, investment, and mobile-phone accounts for unfamiliar activity. Ask financial institutions and credit bureaus about fraud-alert or account-protection options if you disclosed identity information.
- Tell a trusted person. Shame and isolation help the fraud continue. A second person can help document transactions, make calls, and recognize follow-up attempts.
Where to report a psychic or cleansing scam
Report even if the loss was small or you are unsure whether an investigation will follow. Your report can connect related complaints and help agencies warn others.
- Federal Trade Commission: Submit a report at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. Include the contact method, promises, payment demand, dates, amounts, and copies of evidence.
- FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center: File an internet-crime complaint at IC3.gov, especially when the contact, payment, or account activity occurred online.
- State authorities: Contact your state attorney general through the office’s independently verified official website. Provide the same timeline and transaction records.
- Local law enforcement: Contact your local police department or sheriff using a number obtained independently. Ask how to submit financial-crime evidence and obtain a report number.
- Financial regulators and institutions: Follow the bank, card, payment, and exchange fraud procedures immediately. Consumer-protection guidance emphasizes that real agencies do not threaten you or demand money to protect your money.
Do not pay anyone who says a report, investigation, or government action requires an upfront fee. Official agencies do not require gift cards, cryptocurrency, or a payment-app transfer to “secure” your funds.
Beware of recovery fraud after the first scam
Fraudsters often maintain lists of previous victims. Later, someone may pose as a government official, lawyer, investigator, or recovery specialist and claim that your money has been found. The caller may request a retainer, donation, taxes, insurance, account details, or a processing fee. Repeated demands can follow after each payment.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission warns about this re-targeting pattern. Treat unsolicited recovery offers as a new fraud attempt when they request money before providing a verifiable service, lack a physical address, operate only through a messaging app, promise guaranteed recovery, or ask for bank credentials. Verify any claimed agency or attorney through contact information you obtain independently. Do not give a recovery service remote access, passwords, one-time codes, or permission to move funds.
How to help someone who may be targeted
Direct confrontation can make a victim withdraw and return to the scammer for reassurance. Focus on observable behavior and safety rather than ridiculing spiritual beliefs.
- Ask what was promised, what has been paid, and what information was shared.
- Offer to sit with the person while they contact the bank or payment provider.
- Help save messages and create a chronological list of payments and contacts.
- Encourage a pause on all payments and a second opinion from a qualified counselor or consumer-protection professional.
- Watch for isolation, threats, rapid asset sales, unusual withdrawals, or a new “recovery” contact.
- If there is an immediate threat, suspected exploitation of a vulnerable adult, or danger of self-harm, contact appropriate emergency or safeguarding services.
A practical decision rule
Do not pay when an offer combines an unproven supernatural diagnosis with pressure, secrecy, escalating cost, irreversible payment, requests for valuables, or access to financial accounts. A provider who cannot satisfy basic identity, written-scope, price, cancellation, and privacy checks has failed the minimum test. Pause, preserve evidence, obtain independent advice, and use official reporting and fraud channels instead of trying to buy certainty.
