The fastest way to find a legal stream for a particular NFL game is to enter your ZIP code in the NFL’s Ways to Watch guide, then match the game’s market, broadcast window and device requirements. Local Sunday-afternoon games generally appear on CBS or FOX; out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games require NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV; and NFL+ live video is limited to eligible local and national games on a phone or tablet.

A message such as “not available in your area” can describe several different situations. The game may be assigned to a local affiliate, carried nationally by another network, sold through an out-of-market package, restricted by a provider agreement or unavailable on the device you selected. Identifying the right category is more useful than trying random apps or changing network settings.

What an NFL “blackout” means now

A streaming blackout is not one universal technical switch. A game can be unavailable because it is assigned to a local broadcast station, reserved for a national broadcaster, sold as an out-of-market package, restricted by a provider agreement, or unsupported on the device you are using.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The NFL’s current support guidance says games are subject to broadcast rights and blackout restrictions, while availability can vary by geographic location, platform and device. In practical terms, the question is not simply “Is the game blacked out?” It is “Which rightsholder has this game in my ZIP code, and does my service and device support that right?”

“Local” means the game is available on television in your local market. It does not necessarily mean the stadium is nearby, that your favorite team is playing, or that every household in a state receives the same matchup. The local market is tied to the broadcast assignment and the location associated with your service or ZIP code.

Do not confuse today’s app and subscription restrictions with historic stadium sellout rules. Older club documents describing local television blackouts tied to attendance do not explain why a modern streaming app shows a location or device message. Current network rights, provider agreements and product terms are the relevant explanations for a viewer trying to watch today.

Start with the NFL ZIP-code lookup

Before changing services or buying equipment, use the NFL Ways to Watch guide and enter your ZIP code. The guide is designed to show the games and providers available in your area, and its results can change when you select the services you already have.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Identify the exact matchup. Confirm the teams, date, kickoff time and whether it is a Sunday-afternoon, primetime or special national game.
  2. Enter your ZIP code. Use the NFL Ways to Watch location tool rather than relying on a national schedule alone.
  3. Select your existing providers. Include your cable, satellite or live-TV service, and check whether an over-the-air station is listed.
  4. Read the game-specific result. Note the network, local affiliate, platform and any device qualification shown for that matchup.
  5. Check the provider’s own channel listing. A service may carry a network nationally but still have a different local affiliate lineup in your market.

The NFL’s guide is the best first check because local assignments and platform availability can vary by market and can change during a season. Verify the listing again on game day if a schedule or channel assignment has changed.

Why the ZIP result matters

A national schedule may tell you that a game is on CBS, FOX or another broadcaster, but it cannot confirm which local station carries that network in your household. The ZIP-code result connects the matchup to an actual station or service. It can also reveal that a game you expected to be local is outside your market and therefore belongs to the Sunday Ticket category.

Use the address associated with the service you will actually watch. A mobile device, home television subscription and temporary travel location may not produce identical availability. Providers can use account and location information in addition to the ZIP code, so a result is a starting point rather than a promise that every login or device will show the same feed.

Local Sunday-afternoon games: CBS or FOX

For a Sunday-afternoon game that is in your local market, the normal route is the local CBS or FOX affiliate through an eligible television provider or an over-the-air broadcast. The particular matchup shown can differ from one market to another, so check the ZIP-code guide and local listings rather than assuming every viewer receives the same game.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a pay-TV or live-TV provider

Check the provider’s local channel lineup for the CBS or FOX affiliate identified for your ZIP code. If the channel is missing, unavailable in your package or affected by a local carriage dispute, the NFL listing may still show the broadcaster while your provider cannot deliver it. Contact the provider or use another eligible local route; changing an NFL+ setting will not replace a missing affiliate.

Confirm that you are looking at the correct market in the provider’s guide. Streaming television services sometimes show a local station based on the service address, while a receiver used at a different address may be assigned differently. Sign out and back in only after checking the account’s service address; repeated app reinstalls will not correct a rights or market assignment.

Using an antenna

An indoor HDTV antenna can receive a local over-the-air affiliate when the station’s signal reaches your address. This is a practical way to watch an available local broadcast without a pay-TV subscription, but it does not unlock out-of-market games and it cannot guarantee reception. Building materials, distance, terrain, antenna placement and local transmitter direction all affect the result.

  • Check which CBS or FOX station the NFL guide lists for your ZIP code.
  • Use the antenna where it has the clearest path toward local transmitters, often near an exterior wall or window.
  • Rescan the television after moving the antenna.
  • Do not interpret a weak or missing signal as proof that the NFL has blocked the game; it may be a reception problem.

An antenna is equipment for receiving a broadcast that is already available at your address. It is not a substitute for an out-of-market subscription, and a stronger antenna cannot change the market assigned to your ZIP code. If the station is not listed for your area, antenna placement is not the issue.

What NFL+ does—and does not—include

NFL+ is not a general replacement for every NFL game. The NFL describes live local and nationally televised regular-season and postseason games as available through NFL+ subject to broadcast rights, while out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games are not available live on NFL+.

The NFL states: “Out-of-market Sunday afternoon games are not available live on NFL+ and require NFL Sunday Ticket.” That is the key dividing line for most Sunday viewers.

Local and national live games

Eligible local and primetime live games may be available in NFL+ on a phone or tablet. “Eligible” matters: the game must be one the service is permitted to show in your location, and the current terms can vary by geography, platform and device.

Having an NFL+ subscription does not override the local broadcast assignment. If a game is available on your local CBS or FOX station, the station remains the normal television route even when NFL+ offers an eligible mobile stream. If the NFL guide does not list NFL+ for your location or device, the subscription cannot create that entitlement.

Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games

If the game is being played outside your local market and falls in the Sunday-afternoon window, NFL+ is not the live-video route. NFL Sunday Ticket, distributed through YouTube or YouTube TV, is the NFL’s identified out-of-market Sunday-afternoon option. It is separate from NFL+; having one subscription does not automatically include the other.

Check the Sunday Ticket listing for the specific matchup before paying. The package is intended for Sunday-afternoon games outside your local market, not as a replacement for every primetime or nationally distributed game. A nationally televised matchup can follow a different broadcaster even when you also subscribe to Sunday Ticket.

Audio and replays

NFL+ live audio is described as available for every game. NFL+ Premium adds RedZone and game replays. These features can remain useful when live video is unavailable, but they do not remove the geographic or broadcast-rights limits on live video.

  • 16FT Coax Cable: Coaxial cable is composed of a solid center conductor, dielectric insulation, three aluminum shielding layers, and a durable outer layer. so that you will never lose signal or suffer distortion even in bad weather.
  • Compatibility and Usage Tips: Not suitable for older analog televisions; supports smart TVs and digital TVs. For optimal signal reception, try placing the antenna near a window or in other locations, and test both vertical and horizontal orientations.
  • Easy to Install: Plug the coaxial cable from your digital indoor HDTV antenna into the ANT/IN connector on the back of your TV, point the TV antenna toward your local TV tower and scan for channels. (Check "dtv gov maps" for available channels).

Audio and replay access should therefore be treated as alternatives, not workarounds. They can help you follow a game when a live video feed is unavailable, but they will not turn an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game into a live NFL+ stream or place a restricted live event on a television.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why NFL+ will not cast a live game to your TV

A common mistake is to subscribe to NFL+, open a live game on a phone and expect a Chromecast, AirPlay or similar connection to put that event on a television. The NFL says live local and primetime games on NFL+ are limited to the phone or tablet and “cannot be cast to your television or other devices during such live events.”

This is a rights and product limitation, not necessarily a fault with your home network. Casting may work for other NFL+ content, such as replays or non-live features, when the app and device support it. The restriction applies to the live event itself.

  • If you need a television screen, use the local CBS or FOX broadcast, another listed national broadcaster, or a supported Sunday Ticket device.
  • If the game is available only through NFL+ live video, plan to watch on the supported phone or tablet.
  • Do not buy an HDMI adapter or change Wi-Fi settings expecting that to override the live-event restriction.

Trying a second television does not change the rule. Neither does mirroring the phone screen, using a different streaming stick or moving the phone to the same Wi-Fi network as the television. Those steps may help with an ordinary playback error, but they do not grant permission for a restricted live event.

Choose the legal route for your game

Situation Route to check Important limit
Sunday-afternoon game in your local market Local CBS or FOX affiliate through an eligible TV provider or over-the-air station; confirm with the NFL ZIP-code guide. Affiliate and game selection vary by market. An antenna works only where the local signal reaches your address.
Eligible local or nationally televised live game NFL+ on a supported phone or tablet, or the broadcaster listed for that matchup. Availability follows broadcast rights and location. NFL+ is not a general out-of-market Sunday-afternoon feed.
Out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV. It is distinct from NFL+. Confirm the current package and the specific matchup before purchasing.
Primetime or special national game Use the network or platform shown in the current NFL guide and local listings. Do not assume one service carries every national game; assignments can change.
NFL+ live game on a television Use another listed TV route if available; NFL+ live local and primetime access is phone/tablet-only. The live event cannot be cast to a television or other device under the NFL’s stated restriction.

Compare choices by market, not by app name

When comparing options, first classify the market. A local broadcast may be the least complicated route if you already have the affiliate or can receive it over the air. Sunday Ticket is the relevant comparison when the game is out of market on Sunday afternoon. NFL+ is a different product centered on eligible local and national live games on mobile devices, plus audio, replays and other features depending on the plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Next compare the game window and screen you need. A service that works for a phone cannot necessarily provide a television feed, and a package that covers Sunday afternoon does not necessarily carry a primetime broadcast. Finally, compare what you already pay for: an existing local-TV provider, an antenna, NFL+, or YouTube/YouTube TV. Buying a second product without checking the ZIP-code result can duplicate coverage rather than solve the problem.

A troubleshooting sequence for a missing game

1. Recheck the schedule

Confirm the teams, date, kickoff time and game window. A flexible schedule, a moved kickoff or a national assignment can change which service is correct.

2. Run the ZIP-code check

Enter your location in the NFL Ways to Watch guide and select the providers you actually use. This distinguishes a local affiliate assignment from an out-of-market package requirement.

3. Identify the market status

For Sunday afternoon, determine whether the game is in-market. Local games normally use CBS or FOX. An out-of-market game points to Sunday Ticket rather than NFL+ live video.

4. Match the device

Check whether you are trying to watch on a television, connected device, phone or tablet. NFL+ live local and primetime games require a phone or tablet, and casting is not supported for those live events.

5. Verify the actual channel or app entitlement

A listed network does not guarantee that your package carries the correct local affiliate. Open the provider’s current channel guide, sign in to the correct account and check that the subscription is active for the game.

6. Test local reception when using an antenna

If the NFL guide lists an over-the-air station, rescan your television and reposition the antenna. Reception failure is address-dependent and is separate from an NFL streaming restriction.

7. Recheck before paying

For any new service, verify the current price, package, device support and matchup availability on the provider’s own page. Broadcast distributions and subscription details can change by season or provider.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Separate a rights message from a technical error

If the app identifies a location, market or casting restriction, changing passwords, clearing cache or rebooting the router is unlikely to help. Those steps are reasonable for buffering or login failures, but a rights message requires the route listed for that game. Contact support only after confirming that the game should be available through your account and device.

Geography, territories and international viewing

NFL subscription terms updated September 4, 2026, state that NFL+ products are available only in the 50 U.S. states and Washington, D.C., where permitted by law. The terms also say content can vary by geography, platform and device.

NFL support separately says NFL+ is not available in U.S. territories and directs viewers outside the United States to DAZN for international Game Pass. A viewer in a U.S. territory or another country should therefore treat that as a separate availability question, not as an ordinary domestic local-market blackout.

Within the United States, the terms describe live preseason games as generally subject to local and other geographic blackouts. Live regular-season and postseason games are limited to games available on local television and national broadcasts and are generally phone- or tablet-only through NFL+.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Travel can make a familiar subscription look different. If you are away from the address used for a television service, check the provider’s location policy and the NFL guide again. Do not assume that a subscription purchased in one state guarantees the same live video at every destination.

What not to assume

  • A VPN is a guaranteed fix. Official guidance does not establish reliable VPN performance or say that a VPN overrides broadcast rights. Do not present it as a dependable workaround.
  • NFL+ includes every Sunday game. It does not include live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games.
  • Every national game is on one service. Follow the game-specific network and platform assignment.
  • An antenna defeats a blackout. It can receive an available local over-the-air affiliate; it cannot turn an out-of-market game into a local broadcast.
  • A casting problem is always technical. For NFL+ live local and primetime events, the no-casting rule is an intentional device restriction.
  • An old sellout rule explains a current app message. Historic stadium blackout policies are not a substitute for current NFL and provider terms.
  • A network logo guarantees your local feed. Your provider still has to carry the correct affiliate for your service address.
  • One subscription covers every viewing window. Local Sunday afternoon, out-of-market Sunday afternoon, primetime and replay rights are different categories.

Planning the cost without buying the wrong product

Current prices and package names can change, so verify them on the provider’s own page immediately before purchase. The important cost question is not simply which service is cheapest; it is whether the service covers the market and device you need. Paying for NFL+ will not supply an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon feed, while Sunday Ticket may be unnecessary if your local CBS or FOX station is already included with your television service or available over the air.

Also check for duplicate coverage. A household may already have a local affiliate through a pay-TV package and need only an antenna for a backup, while another household may need Sunday Ticket for a specific out-of-market window. Check the matchup list, billing terms and supported devices rather than relying on a service’s general NFL branding.

Examples of common situations

You want the local Sunday game on a television

Enter your ZIP code, note the CBS or FOX affiliate, and check that channel in your provider’s guide. If the station is listed as over the air, test an antenna at your address. NFL+ is not the way to turn that local mobile entitlement into a television stream.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Your favorite team is playing in another market

First determine whether the matchup is a Sunday-afternoon game. If it is out of market, check Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV. NFL+ does not provide that live out-of-market Sunday-afternoon video.

You can see the game on your phone but not on the TV

If the phone stream is an NFL+ live local or primetime event, the phone/tablet-only rule explains the result. Use the listed television broadcaster if you need a larger screen; do not expect casting or a cable adapter to change the restriction.

The guide says CBS or FOX, but your app shows nothing

Check whether your streaming television package carries the local affiliate, whether you are signed in to the correct account and whether the service address is current. The national network assignment does not guarantee that every provider delivers that station in every market.

Quick decision checklist

  1. Have the exact matchup, date and kickoff time.
  2. Run the NFL Ways to Watch ZIP-code lookup.
  3. Mark the game as local Sunday afternoon, out-of-market Sunday afternoon, primetime or special national.
  4. For local Sunday afternoon, check CBS or FOX through your provider or an available over-the-air affiliate.
  5. For out-of-market Sunday afternoon, check Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV, not NFL+.
  6. For NFL+ live viewing, use a supported phone or tablet and do not plan to cast the live event.
  7. Check territory or international status if you are outside the 50 states and Washington, D.C.
  8. Verify current package, price and device support immediately before purchasing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my NFL game blacked out?

Usually the game is tied to a local broadcast, an out-of-market package, a national rightsholder, a provider agreement or a device restriction. Enter your ZIP code in the NFL Ways to Watch guide and check the game-specific broadcaster and platform.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I watch my local NFL game on NFL+?

Eligible local and nationally televised live games may be available on NFL+ subject to rights, location and device limits. NFL+ is not a general television replacement, and live local or primetime access is generally limited to a phone or tablet.

Can NFL+ show an out-of-market Sunday-afternoon game?

No. NFL Support says out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games are not available live on NFL+ and require NFL Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV.

Why can’t I cast NFL+ to my TV?

The NFL says live local and primetime events on NFL+ cannot be cast to a television or other device. This is an intentional live-event restriction, not necessarily a Wi-Fi or Chromecast problem.

Are local Sunday NFL games on CBS or FOX?

Local Sunday-afternoon games are generally carried by the local CBS or FOX affiliate. The matchup and affiliate vary by market, so confirm the result with the NFL ZIP-code guide and your provider’s local channel listing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will an indoor HDTV antenna bypass a blackout?

An antenna can receive an available local over-the-air CBS or FOX signal where reception supports it. It cannot unlock an out-of-market game or change the broadcast assignment for your ZIP code.

Does Sunday Ticket come with NFL+?

No. Sunday Ticket is a separate product distributed through YouTube or YouTube TV. Verify the current package and the particular matchup before purchasing.

Can I use a VPN to avoid an NFL blackout?

Do not treat a VPN as a guaranteed solution. Official guidance does not establish reliable VPN performance or state that a VPN overrides broadcast rights or location restrictions.

What if I live outside the 50 states and Washington, D.C.?

NFL+ domestic terms do not cover U.S. territories, and NFL Support directs viewers outside the United States to DAZN for international Game Pass. Check the service intended for your territory or country.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What can I use if live video is unavailable?

NFL+ live audio is described as available for every game, and NFL+ Premium adds RedZone and game replays. These features provide alternatives but do not remove live-video rights or device restrictions.

The Bottom Line

Use the NFL Ways to Watch ZIP-code guide first. Local Sunday-afternoon games generally belong to CBS or FOX; out-of-market Sunday-afternoon games belong to Sunday Ticket through YouTube or YouTube TV; and NFL+ live local or national games are generally phone- or tablet-only and cannot be cast. Confirm the exact matchup, market, provider, device and current package details before you pay.
