You can lose T-Mobile promotional credits after a plan change or upgrade, but not every change has the same result. Protect the discount by identifying each promotion, keeping its qualifying line and equipment installment plan (EIP) active, checking the exact offer terms, and getting T-Mobile to confirm the proposed transaction on your account. A plan that remains with T-Mobile is not automatically eligible: the required rate plan, service feature, device financing status, enrollment date, and upgrade rules all matter.

Why a T-Mobile change can affect your credits

T-Mobile promotions are contracts with conditions, not permanent price reductions attached to a phone number. The condition may be a particular rate plan, an active line, an EIP for the qualifying device, or a combination of those requirements. T-Mobile says eligibility is specific to each offer and warns that canceling or changing the plan or service required for a credit promotion can disqualify you from continuing the credits. See T-Mobile’s promotional-offer details and its promotional cards, credits, and rebates guidance.

There are two common kinds of discounts to separate before making a change:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Service or line promotions: a monthly discount, free-line offer, bill credit, or other benefit tied to keeping a qualifying service and plan.
  • Recurring Device Credits (RDC): monthly credits applied against an EIP for a promotional phone or other device. These normally have a defined promotional period and may have separate payoff and upgrade rules.

A single account can have both types at once. A plan change that is harmless to one offer can end another, so an account-level assumption is unsafe.

T-Mobile’s plain-language rule for many device promotions is: “You must maintain the line of service and EIP tied to the promotion to receive the full value of the offer, but if either are closed or cancelled, the monthly credits will stop.” That statement describes the requirement for the cited promotion; read the terms of your own offer before treating it as universal.

Remaining a T-Mobile customer is not enough

Moving from one T-Mobile rate plan to another, replacing a financed phone, closing a line, or paying off an EIP can change the condition that created the discount. Conversely, T-Mobile’s general promotional FAQ says a change of responsibility, account or phone number, warranty exchange, or in-window remorse exchange does not affect eligibility for the offer described there when the account remains in good standing. That exception is offer-specific, so do not extend it to an unrelated promotion without checking its terms.

  1. Sign in to your T-Mobile account. Open the line and device details for every line that has a discount. Record the promotion name or ID, credit amount, start date, remaining months, qualifying phone number, and the device’s EIP number.
  2. Inspect the bill’s Equipment section. Recurring device credits may appear beside the installment charge. Note the regular EIP payment, the credit, the remaining device balance, and the number of payments left.
  3. Identify service conditions. Write down the exact rate plan, data feature, add-on, line status, trade-in requirement, and any combination restriction listed in the offer.
  4. Record enrollment timing. The date you enrolled can change the payoff rule. In particular, T-Mobile applies a different early-payoff treatment to customers who enrolled in RDC on or after July 1, 2024.
  5. Save the terms. Use the offer page or the promotion document linked from your account. Include the date saved and the URL so you can show the same language to support later.
What to record Why it matters Where to look
Promotion name or ID Different offers can have different eligibility and upgrade rules. Account promotion details or the original offer terms.
Qualifying line and phone Closing, replacing, or moving the wrong line can stop the credit. Line details and device EIP page.
Required plan or feature A lower-cost or otherwise different plan may not qualify. Offer terms and current rate-plan page.

EIP balance and enrollment date Upgrade and early-payoff treatment depends on financing status and timing. Device financing page, bill, and offer terms.

Read the exact offer terms, not just the plan comparison

Before selecting a new plan, open the terms for every affected promotion. Confirm all of the following:

  • Which rate plan or service feature is required.
  • Whether the qualifying line must remain active and in good standing.
  • Whether the original EIP must remain open until the promotional period ends.
  • Whether the offer can be combined with the proposed plan, another promotion, or a new device offer.
  • How trade-ins, exchanges, warranty replacements, and number or account changes are handled.
  • Whether the credit starts immediately, after a bill-cycle delay, or only after a qualifying event is verified.
  • What happens if you upgrade, pay off the device, suspend service, or close the line.

T-Mobile’s promotional-offer page explains that offer eligibility and conditions are specific to each promotion. A general plan comparison cannot establish compatibility by itself. If the terms do not clearly address your proposed change, treat the result as unknown until T-Mobile confirms it in writing or in an account note.

How common account changes affect credits

The following matrix separates the change types that customers often call a “plan upgrade.” The outcome is a starting point for verification, not a guarantee for an unidentified promotion.

Change What T-Mobile’s published guidance indicates What to verify before proceeding
Change to another rate plan or required service Changing or canceling a plan or service required for a promotion can disqualify continuing credits. Whether the proposed plan is listed as eligible for each promotion and whether a feature must remain.
Cancel the qualifying line or close the EIP Monthly credits stop when the line or EIP tied to the promotion is closed or canceled. Whether another line can qualify, whether the device balance becomes due, and the exact effective date.
Upgrade the credited device T-Mobile’s Yearly Upgrade terms state that an upgrade ends current financing and device-promotion or deposit-reimbursement credits. Support guidance also lists a JUMP! upgrade from a credited device among events that can disqualify credits. Whether the transaction closes or replaces the old EIP, what happens to remaining credits, and whether the new offer is independent.
Pay the EIP early For RDC enrollment on or after July 1, 2024, T-Mobile says the remaining monthly RDC is forfeited after early payoff. Earlier enrollments may continue as an account-level credit under the stated offer terms, for up to 24 or 36 months. Your enrollment date, the exact RDC language, and whether payoff is required or merely optional.
Change of responsibility, account, or phone number The general promotional FAQ says these changes do not affect eligibility for the described offer when the account remains in good standing. Whether your specific promotion adopts that rule and whether the new account or line still meets every condition.
Warranty exchange or in-window remorse exchange The same general FAQ lists these as changes that do not affect eligibility for the described offer when the account remains in good standing. Whether the replacement is processed as an allowed exchange rather than a new upgrade or a closed EIP.

Use a safe workflow for a rate-plan change

  1. List the lines affected by the proposed plan. Include lines that are not changing if their promotions require the same account-level plan.
  2. Match each promotion to the proposed plan. Ask T-Mobile to check the promotion ID, not merely the phone number or account name. Have the representative confirm that the new plan is an eligible plan for that exact offer.
  3. Ask about feature-level requirements. A promotion may require a particular data feature or service even when the account stays on a similarly named plan.
  4. Ask for the effective date and proration. A mid-cycle change can create prorated charges and credits. Confirm which bill will show the final old-plan charge, the new-plan charge, and any partial-month adjustment.
  5. Request an account note or written confirmation. The note should identify the promotions checked, the new plan, the representative’s conclusion, and any condition you must keep.
  6. Review the next bills before making another change. Do not assume that a missing credit is permanent until the stated posting window has passed, but contact T-Mobile promptly if the account no longer shows eligibility.

When the cheaper plan is not actually cheaper

Calculate the proposed monthly bill with credits removed, then with credits included. A plan that lowers the base rate can cost more overall if it ends a device credit or service discount. Include the remaining months of each credit, the unpaid EIP balance, taxes and fees, and any prorated first bill. T-Mobile does not publish one universal “safe downgrade” rule because the required plan is offer-specific.

Use a separate workflow when upgrading a phone

An upgrade is more than a new handset order. It can close the old financing arrangement and therefore change the credit attached to it.

  1. Identify the old EIP. Record its remaining balance, remaining promotional credits, and the line to which it is attached.
  2. Ask whether the old EIP will be closed, paid off, or replaced. Use those exact words. A representative should explain whether the old device balance becomes due and whether old credits stop on the upgrade date.
  3. Ask whether the upgrade is covered by Yearly Upgrade, JUMP!, Forever Upgrade, or another program. Program rules are not interchangeable. T-Mobile’s Yearly Upgrade guidance says an upgrade ends current financing and device-promotion or deposit-reimbursement credits. Its Forever Upgrade support page also describes specific credit-disqualifying events.
  4. Separate the old and new promotions. Ask which credits end, which new credits begin, and the first bill on which each should appear. Do not let a new phone promotion be presented as proof that the old one will continue.
  5. Confirm trade-in and return deadlines. A trade-in or remorse return may have different treatment from an upgrade. Keep the tracking number, inspection result, and acceptance confirmation.
  6. Save the checkout and support records. Retain the order summary, EIP agreement, promotion terms, and chat transcript until the old and new credits have posted correctly.

Could switching back restore an upgrade benefit?

T-Mobile’s Yearly Upgrade support guidance says customers may have 30 days to switch back to an eligible plan or data feature and regain the Yearly Upgrade benefit under that program. That 30-day provision concerns the Yearly Upgrade benefit; it does not establish that every discontinued device promotion or RDC will resume. Ask support to identify the exact benefit being restored before relying on the switch-back option.

Think carefully before paying off a financed device

Early payoff is a separate decision from changing the rate plan. T-Mobile’s promotional details say that customers who enrolled in RDC on or after July 1, 2024 forfeit the remainder of their monthly RDC if they pay off the EIP early. For some earlier enrollments, the stated terms allow the promised RDC to continue as an account-level credit through the remaining promotional period, up to 24 or 36 months. The offer and enrollment date control.

  1. Find the RDC enrollment date in the offer or account record.
  2. Read the payoff paragraph in that offer, including any exception for required payoff, return, or upgrade.
  3. Ask T-Mobile to calculate the payoff amount and the total credits that would be lost or retained.
  4. Compare that result with leaving the EIP open and continuing the monthly payments.
  5. Get confirmation before submitting a payoff, because a completed payoff may not be reversible.

Do not assume that paying the remaining device balance makes the phone “free” of promotion conditions. The financial result depends on whether the credit is an EIP reduction, an account-level credit, or a discount that ends when the financing closes.

Allow for billing delays and prorated amounts

A correct promotion may not appear on the first bill after a change. T-Mobile says promotional credits can take up to two full bill cycles to start. Its onboarding guidance says equipment credits may not apply until the next bill, while a mid-cycle change can produce prorated charges and credits. See T-Mobile’s onboarding guidance for the timing explanation.

When you check What to look for Reasonable action
Immediately after the transaction New plan, line status, EIP status, order details, and confirmation that the promotion was attached. Save screenshots and contact support if the order does not show the expected promotion.
First bill after a mid-cycle change Prorated old and new plan charges, partial-month credits, and equipment charges. Compare dates and amounts with the confirmation; do not mistake proration for a permanent loss.
Second full bill cycle Regular recurring credit and the correct EIP amount. If the credit is still absent or the account says ineligible, escalate with the promotion ID and saved terms.

The two-cycle window is a posting allowance, not permission to ignore a disqualifying notice. If a bill explicitly says the promotion ended, ask T-Mobile why before waiting for another cycle.

What to do when a credit is missing

  1. Compare the bill with your inventory. Check the qualifying line, EIP number, credit amount, and billing dates. Look for the credit under Equipment as well as under account-level adjustments.
  2. Check for a plan or service mismatch. Confirm the current plan name and every required feature against the saved terms.
  3. Check whether an upgrade or payoff closed the old EIP. A new device credit does not replace a discontinued old credit automatically.
  4. Check the timing. Determine whether two full bill cycles have elapsed since the qualifying transaction or whether the first bill was prorated.
  5. Contact T-Mobile with a precise request. Provide the promotion ID, qualifying line, EIP number, enrollment date, transaction date, and the exact bill line that is wrong. Ask the representative to review eligibility and explain the correction or denial.
  6. Escalate with your records. Keep the original terms, screenshots, order confirmation, chat transcript, and representative’s case or interaction number. Ask for the expected correction date and verify it on the next bill.

Questions to ask before authorizing any change

You can paste this checklist into a chat or read it to an account representative:

  • “For promotion [promotion name or ID], is my proposed plan eligible for the remaining credits?”
  • “Which line and EIP must remain active, and will this transaction close or replace either one?”
  • “If I upgrade this device, exactly which existing credits stop, on what date, and what balance becomes due?”
  • “If I pay off the EIP, do I keep or forfeit the remaining RDC, based on my enrollment date?”
  • “Will this change create prorated charges or credits, and on which bill should the regular credit appear?”
  • “Can you place the eligibility determination and the conditions I must keep in an account note?”

Ask the representative to review each promotion separately. A single “your account is eligible” answer is not specific enough when several lines or offers are involved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistakes that commonly cost customers credits

  • Changing first and checking terms later: an irreversible upgrade or payoff can occur before anyone verifies eligibility.
  • Relying on the plan name alone: similarly named plans can differ in the features required by an offer.
  • Assuming a new promotion replaces an old one: the new offer may be independent while the old EIP credit ends.
  • Closing a line after moving its number: the qualifying line can be the condition, even when the account and customer remain active.
  • Ignoring enrollment dates: the July 1, 2024 RDC cutoff changes the consequence of early payoff for affected customers.
  • Treating a missing first-bill credit as final: T-Mobile allows up to two full bill cycles for promotional credits to start, with prorations possible after a mid-cycle change.
  • Failing to preserve evidence: without the offer terms, EIP details, and confirmation, it is harder to show what was promised or identify the exact point of failure.

Bottom line: verify the promotion, line, EIP, and transaction together

Before changing a T-Mobile plan, upgrading, or paying off a device, inventory every credit and read its exact terms. Keep the qualifying service and EIP active unless T-Mobile confirms a permitted alternative. Treat upgrades and early payoff as separate risks, document the answer for your account, and check bills through the applicable posting window. Only the promotion’s terms and your account records can establish whether a particular change preserves the discount.
