The key protection is to manage the Mark Price, not just the candle you see. Binance calculates unrealized profit and loss and liquidation prices from Mark Price. Because Mark Price can move faster than Last Price, a position can become liquidatable even when no trade appears to have touched the displayed liquidation price. Use lower leverage, smaller notional exposure, a deliberate margin mode, and a substantial margin-ratio buffer; act before the trigger rather than waiting for an alert.
Binance’s published guidance, updated in 2026, is to keep the margin ratio below 80%. Liquidation eligibility begins when collateral—initial margin plus realized and unrealized profit or loss—falls below the maintenance margin. The displayed liquidation price is an estimate for current conditions, not a guaranteed execution level during a jump.
Why a position can liquidate when the candle never touched your price
Binance uses two prices for futures risk management:

- Mark Price combines funding information with a basket of prices from spot exchanges.
The chart candle is normally built from trades, so it reflects Last Price. Binance uses Mark Price to calculate unrealized PnL and liquidation prices. If the basket-based Mark Price rises or falls more quickly than the last traded price, the risk engine can reach your liquidation threshold while the visible candle still looks short of it.

Liquidation is determined by account collateral versus maintenance margin, not by whether a single wick printed at a particular level. Collateral includes your initial margin and realized and unrealized PnL. When that collateral falls below the maintenance margin requirement, the position is eligible for liquidation.
The one-second move Binance uses as an illustration
Binance documents an example in which Mark Price moves from 17,000 to 17,100 USDT in one second. A position can be liquidated at the higher Mark Price during that jump even if the initially displayed liquidation price was closer to 17,000. This is why a liquidation-price readout should be treated as a moving risk estimate rather than a guaranteed fill level.
Know the margin-ratio thresholds
For ordinary futures positions, the practical signal is the margin ratio shown by Binance. Binance states that a margin ratio of 100% means the account has reached liquidation conditions and advises adding margin or reducing positions before that point. Its 2026 guidance recommends keeping the ratio below 80%, leaving room for Mark Price movement, funding deductions and changes in maintenance requirements.

The 80% figure is a risk-management recommendation, not a promise that liquidation cannot occur below it. A sudden Mark Price jump can consume the remaining buffer quickly, and the ratio can change as position size, PnL or maintenance-margin tier changes.
Reduce risk before opening a position
Use less leverage and less notional exposure
Leverage changes how much collateral supports a position; it does not remove the loss created by the position’s full notional value. Binance adjusts available leverage and risk limits according to absolute exposure. Larger positions require more margin and can be restricted to lower leverage. Start by reducing notional size, then select leverage that leaves meaningful unused collateral instead of sizing a position to the maximum shown in the order panel.

- Decide the maximum loss you can accept before entering.
- Size the position from that loss limit, not from the maximum leverage offered.
- Recheck the liquidation price after changing quantity or leverage; both can alter the displayed level.
- Keep additional wallet collateral available if your plan depends on adding margin during a move.
Choose isolated or cross margin deliberately
Margin mode determines which collateral can be consumed when Mark Price moves.

Isolated mode is useful when you need a hard, position-level loss boundary. Cross mode can delay liquidation of one position by using equity elsewhere, but a correlated move can drain that shared equity and put several positions at risk. After switching modes, adding margin or resizing, recalculate the liquidation price shown by Binance; the old value no longer describes the new collateral arrangement.

Do not place a position so close to the displayed liquidation price that a small Mark Price jump can reach it. The readout reflects current price, margin, maintenance requirements and account configuration. It can move as any of those inputs changes, and execution during a jump may occur at a less favorable level.
What to do when the buffer is too small
- Add margin. Increasing collateral moves the position farther from liquidation, subject to the margin mode and available balance.
- Reduce position size. Close part of the position or lower its notional exposure so less collateral is required.
- Lower leverage for new exposure. Do this before adding to a losing position; adding size can increase maintenance requirements and worsen the risk profile.
- Re-read the live liquidation price and margin ratio. Confirm that the change produced the intended buffer before the market moves again.
There is no official probability estimate for liquidation during a fast Mark Price move. Treat the buffer as a practical safety margin, not as a calculated guarantee.
Understand maintenance-margin tiers before increasing size
USDⓈ-M maintenance margin is calculated from position notional, a maintenance-margin rate and a tier-specific maintenance amount. As notional exposure rises, the position can move into a higher risk tier. That transition can increase the maintenance requirement and change the liquidation price even when the market price is unchanged.

How to check a proposed size change
- Note the current position notional and maintenance-margin tier in the Binance futures interface.
- Enter the larger quantity or additional order without assuming the same tier will apply.
- Check the resulting maintenance requirement and liquidation-price estimate.
- If the tier jump removes too much buffer, reduce the order or split the exposure only if the resulting total notional and tier treatment still meet your risk plan.
Splitting an order does not by itself avoid a higher tier if the final position remains at the same total notional. The relevant number is the resulting exposure and the tier Binance applies to it.
Account for funding deductions
Funding payments reduce available balance when you owe them. Binance states that, if the balance is insufficient, funding fees can be deducted from position margin. That deduction reduces the collateral supporting the trade and can move the liquidation price closer even though the underlying market has not made a new extreme.
- Check the next funding time and the estimated payment in the futures interface.
- Keep enough free collateral to cover the deduction without relying on the position margin.
- Recheck margin ratio and liquidation price after funding is charged.
Funding is one input among several; a favorable funding payment does not guarantee safety, and an unfavorable payment can matter most when the position already has little buffer.
Monitor Mark Price and act before the trigger
During a fast market, watch the Mark Price and margin ratio rather than relying only on the last-traded chart. Binance advises adding margin or reducing positions before the margin ratio reaches 100%. Do not wait for a liquidation notification: Binance says notification delivery is not guaranteed to arrive on time, and a rapid move can pass the trigger before a message is delivered.
A practical monitoring routine
- Keep the Mark Price visible alongside Last Price for every open futures position.
- Set a personal action level below 100% margin ratio; Binance’s published recommendation is to remain below 80%.
- Recheck after every size change, margin transfer, funding deduction or margin-mode change.
- When volatility accelerates, reduce exposure first rather than waiting for a stop order or alert to operate.
Alerts and stop orders can support a plan, but neither is guaranteed to prevent liquidation in a gap or Mark Price jump. A stop order may not execute before the risk engine reaches the maintenance threshold, and an alert may arrive late or not at all.

Emergency response when the ratio is rising
Use this order of operations when Mark Price is moving toward your liquidation level:
- Confirm the risk signal. Compare Mark Price, margin ratio, position size and the current liquidation estimate. Do not infer risk solely from the Last Price candle.
- Stop adding exposure. Cancel unfilled orders that would increase notional or consume free collateral.
- Reduce the position. Closing part of the trade lowers both directional exposure and the maintenance margin associated with that exposure.
- Add collateral if appropriate. Transfer or assign margin only after confirming which wallet and margin mode the position uses.
- Recalculate. Verify that the margin ratio has fallen and that the new liquidation estimate provides a usable buffer.
- Escalate to a full close if the buffer cannot be restored. Preserving remaining equity is preferable to waiting for forced liquidation.
Do not assume that a liquidation warning gives you a guaranteed final chance to act. The risk engine can respond to Mark Price faster than a user can receive and process a notification.
Cross margin and isolated margin: the trade-off in detail
When isolated margin is the better boundary
Isolated margin assigns a defined amount of collateral to one position. A loss can consume that allocation without automatically drawing on the rest of the wallet. This makes the maximum planned loss easier to define, but the position can liquidate sooner if the isolated allocation is too small. Adding margin to an isolated position changes its liquidation estimate, so check the updated value immediately.
When cross margin can help—and hurt
Cross margin shares wallet collateral, allowing profitable positions or unused equity to support a losing position. That can postpone liquidation of one trade. The same sharing creates account-wide contagion: losses on correlated positions can consume the common pool, and one fast Mark Price move can weaken the margin available to other trades. Evaluate the combined portfolio, not each cross position in isolation.

Portfolio Margin uses a portfolio-level measure rather than treating each position’s maintenance margin independently. Binance defines unified maintenance margin ratio (uniMMR) as unified adjusted equity divided by unified maintenance margin. Correlations and the combined risk of positions therefore affect the account-level result.

The 1.5 and 1.05 uniMMR figures are from Binance’s documented example, updated in 2026. Account settings and rules can change, so use the live Portfolio Margin interface and current account documentation. Do not translate those levels directly into an ordinary Futures margin ratio.
What happens after forced liquidation
Liquidation is not always a fill at the displayed liquidation price. In a rapid move, the position may be transferred or executed at a bankruptcy price that is less favorable than the estimate shown before the event.
Insurance Fund
If liquidation creates a bankrupt position, Binance’s Insurance Fund may take it over. The fund is intended to absorb losses that remain after the position’s collateral is exhausted.

Auto-Deleveraging
If losses exceed the Insurance Fund’s capacity, Auto-Deleveraging (ADL) can affect traders on the opposing side of the market. This is a tail-risk mechanism, not a normal exit strategy. Keeping exposure and leverage low reduces the chance that a personal liquidation contributes to such a chain of events, but no user can guarantee how the system will respond during an extreme market.
Worked risk scenarios
Last Price lags Mark Price
Suppose the last trade remains below your displayed liquidation level while spot prices in the Mark Price basket move sharply. Binance’s risk engine can mark a larger unrealized loss, push the margin ratio toward 100% and liquidate without a matching Last Price wick. The correct response is to watch the Mark Price and reduce or support the position before that threshold, not to dispute the candle after the fact.
A sudden 17,000-to-17,100 move
In Binance’s illustrative example, Mark Price rises from 17,000 to 17,100 USDT in one second. A position near its threshold can be liquidated at the higher mark. The example demonstrates why a narrow buffer and reliance on a static liquidation readout are unsafe during fast conditions.
Funding removes the remaining cushion
A position may appear stable until a funding charge is due. If the wallet cannot cover the charge, Binance can deduct it from position margin. The resulting lower collateral can move the liquidation price closer even if Last Price and Mark Price have not changed materially.
Common mistakes and their fixes
- Watching only the candle: Display Mark Price beside Last Price because liquidation uses Mark Price.
- Using maximum leverage: Reduce notional exposure and leave unused collateral instead of sizing to the platform limit.
- Assuming the displayed price is fixed: Recalculate after every margin, size, funding or mode change.
- Ignoring maintenance tiers: Check whether a larger position enters a higher notional tier before submitting the order.
- Treating cross margin as free protection: Map all correlated positions because shared equity can disappear together.
- Waiting for an alert: Set a personal action level and act manually; Binance does not guarantee notification timing.
- Adding size to a losing trade: Adding margin can increase the buffer, but adding notional can raise maintenance requirements and accelerate risk.
Pre-trade and live-position checklist
Before entering
- Choose a maximum acceptable loss and size the position from it.
- Use leverage below the maximum available for that notional.
- Select isolated or cross margin based on whether you want position-level containment or shared collateral.
- Check the maintenance-margin tier at the intended size.
- Confirm free collateral for adverse movement and upcoming funding.
- Record the current Mark Price, margin ratio and liquidation estimate.
While the position is open
- Monitor Mark Price, not only Last Price.
- Keep the margin ratio below Binance’s 80% guidance whenever practical.
- Recheck after funding, transfers, partial closes, added margin or size changes.
- Reduce or close exposure before the ratio reaches 100%.
- Assume execution can be worse than the displayed liquidation price during a jump.
Bottom line
Liquidation prevention on Binance is a position-sizing and monitoring discipline. Mark Price—not the last candle—drives unrealized PnL and liquidation calculations. Lower leverage and notional, maintain a substantial margin-ratio buffer, understand maintenance tiers and funding deductions, choose cross or isolated margin intentionally, and intervene before the trigger. No alert, stop order or displayed liquidation price is a guaranteed shield against a rapid Mark Price move.
