The safest way to compare “sustainable” products is to ignore the adjective until you can translate it into a specific, measurable claim. Record what the claim covers, which life-cycle stage it addresses, the comparison baseline, and the evidence behind it. Then compare products that perform the same function using the same metric, system boundary, geography, time period, and expected service life. A logo or a lower number on one impact metric is not enough to identify an overall environmental winner.
What greenwashing looks like in a product comparison
Greenwashing is environmental marketing that creates a more favorable impression than the available evidence supports. It can be an outright falsehood, but it is often subtler: a vague benefit with no quantity, a certification mark whose criteria are hidden, a claim about packaging presented as if it covered the product, or a comparison that leaves out the life-cycle stage where the product performs poorly.
The words green, eco-friendly and sustainable do not identify an impact, a boundary or a baseline. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says marketers should not make broad, unqualified general environmental-benefit claims such as “green” or “eco-friendly.” Its 2012 Green Guides explain that such wording implies far-reaching benefits that are difficult to substantiate. The Guides do not provide specific guidance for the terms “sustainable,” “natural” or “organic,” so those words should never be treated as evidence by themselves.

For a shopper, the practical test is simple: can you state exactly what improved, compared with what, over which part of the product’s life, and how the result was established? If not, you have a marketing description rather than a usable comparison.

Turn every broad claim into a checkable question
Start by copying the exact wording from the product page, package or label. Do not paraphrase it into a stronger claim. Rewrite each statement as a question that could be answered with a number, a defined standard or an auditable record.
| Claim wording | Questions to ask | Evidence that would make it useful |
|---|---|---|
| “Made with recycled materials” | How much recycled content is present? Is it post-consumer material or manufacturing scrap? Does the percentage apply to the product, one component or the package? | A stated percentage, material identification, calculation method and a defined scope. |
| “Renewable material” | What material is renewable, under what management or replenishment conditions, and what environmental benefit is being claimed? | The named material, a clear definition of renewability and evidence for the claimed benefit. Renewability alone does not establish recyclability, biodegradability or low impact. |
| “Non-toxic” | Non-toxic to whom, through which exposure route and under what conditions? Does the claim concern people, aquatic life, soil or all of them? | Relevant hazard or exposure testing and a qualification that defines the population, route and conditions covered. |
| “Powered by renewable energy” | Which source—such as wind or solar—is used? Does the statement cover a site, a production line, purchased electricity or every process in the supply chain? | Energy-source documentation, the covered operations and the accounting period. A renewable-electricity purchase does not prove that every manufacturing process is renewable. |
| “Lower impact” or “better for the planet” | Lower than what product or practice, by which metric, in which geography and for which period? Which life-cycle stages are included? | A quantified comparison with an identified baseline, functional unit and system boundary. |
The FTC’s consumer guidance also tells shoppers to check whether a recycled-content claim applies to the product, the package or both, and to look for the amount claimed. A statement such as “contains recycled plastic” is therefore incomplete unless it tells you how much and where it is used.
Use a five-field claim record for every product
A short record prevents an attractive claim from silently changing meaning as you compare products. Create one row per claim and fill in these five fields before deciding which item is preferable.
- Exact claim: Copy the wording, including a percentage, qualifier or footnote.
- Scope: Mark whether it covers the complete product, a component, an ingredient, an accessory or packaging.
- Life-cycle stage: Identify materials, manufacturing, transport, use, maintenance, reuse or disposal. A claim can be valid for one stage without describing the others.
- Comparison context: Record the baseline, geography and time period. “Uses less water” is not interpretable without knowing less than what, where and when.
- Evidence: Note the test method, calculation, life-cycle assessment (LCA), environmental declaration or certification, including its date and scope.
If a field is blank, write “not stated” rather than inferring a favorable answer. Missing context is a limitation on the comparison, not proof that the claim is false; it does mean you should not rank it as established superiority.
Claims that need extra scrutiny
Recycled content
Separate post-consumer content from manufacturing scrap. Both may be described as recycled, but they represent different material streams and should not be treated as interchangeable. Check whether the percentage is by mass, by a named component or for the entire product. Also check whether the package is being counted. A bottle made with 60% post-consumer recycled plastic is a materially different statement from packaging that contains 60% recycled plastic while the product itself contains none.

Ask whether the claimed content changes performance or life. A recycled-content percentage does not tell you how long the product lasts, whether it can be repaired or whether the material can be recovered again at the end of use. Those questions belong in the same comparison, but they should not be smuggled into the meaning of the recycled-content claim.
Renewable materials
“Renewable” describes the source’s ability to replenish under defined conditions; it does not automatically mean recyclable, biodegradable, compostable or low-impact. Require the name of the material and the reason it qualifies as renewable. Then examine cultivation or extraction, processing, land or water use, durability and end-of-life handling. A renewable feedstock can still have significant impacts elsewhere in its life cycle.
Non-toxic and safer-chemistry wording
“Non-toxic” is unusually broad. Toxicity depends on the substance, dose, route of exposure, duration and organism. A credible statement should identify whether it addresses human health, environmental toxicity or a narrower hazard class, and should provide the relevant testing or regulatory basis. If the seller only says “non-toxic” without defining the covered population and conditions, treat it as an unqualified general claim rather than a demonstrated property.
Renewable-energy statements
Look for the energy source and the operational boundary. A facility may purchase renewable electricity while using fossil fuels for heat, transport or materials processing. The claim could be accurate for the electricity consumed at one site and still say nothing about the full manufacturing chain. Record the covered operations and accounting period before comparing it with another product’s energy claim.
Broad environmental benefits
The FTC warns that even a qualified general claim can mislead if the promoted attribute’s environmental costs outweigh its benefits. “Uses less packaging,” for example, does not settle whether the replacement requires more material, causes more damage in use or increases product losses. A green attribute must be evaluated alongside performance, durability and the rest of the life cycle.

Look for trade-offs instead of a single “green score”
Products affect multiple environmental dimensions. A change that lowers greenhouse-gas emissions can increase water use; lighter packaging can reduce transport impacts but provide less protection and cause more damaged goods; a new material can reduce one hazard while making repair or recycling harder. Do not combine unlike metrics into an overall winner unless the method explains how the trade-offs are weighted.
For each claimed improvement, ask:
- What changed in the other life-cycle stages?
- Did durability, safety, cleaning requirements or performance change?
- Does the advertised disposal route exist where you live, and can the item actually enter it?
- Is the claimed benefit large enough to matter relative to the product’s total impact?
- Are both products measured with the same assumptions and functional output?
The answer may be “unknown.” Recording an unknown is more rigorous than assuming that one positive attribute outweighs all unmeasured effects.
How to evaluate eco-labels and certification seals
A logo is a signpost, not proof. The FTC’s consumer advice says seals and certificates can be useful only when they are backed by solid standards. Before relying on a label, inspect five features:
- Criteria: What environmental impacts and thresholds does the scheme assess? Are the requirements publicly available and specific?
- Scope: Does the label cover the complete product or only one attribute, ingredient, facility or package?
- Verification: Is compliance checked by an independent auditor, and how often? What documents or tests are reviewed?
- Governance: Who sets and updates the rules, and can affected stakeholders challenge them?
- Conflicts: Does the company paying for the label have a material connection to the certifier, auditor or standard-setting body?
The European Commission describes the EU Ecolabel as an official voluntary label for environmental excellence and emphasizes credible, verifiable claims as necessary to restore consumer trust. That status is useful context, but you still need to read what the label covers for the particular product category. A product-wide scheme and a logo for one recycled component are not equivalent evidence.
OECD research reports that unreliable certification schemes make it difficult for consumers to distinguish trustworthy labels from invented ones. When a scheme publishes quantified, product-specific information, it becomes easier to compare. In particular, an ISO 14025 Type III environmental declaration provides quantified life-cycle information for products serving the same function. It is not automatically a favorable result, but it is more informative for comparison than an unsupported overall “sustainable” badge.

Compare products that provide the same function
Fair comparison starts with the service the buyer needs, not with the materials named in the advertisement. Define a functional unit: the amount of useful service being compared. Examples include one litre of safe drinking water delivered, one hour of illumination at a specified brightness, or one garment worn and laundered a stated number of times. The exact unit depends on the product category and the evidence available.
| Comparison element | What to specify | Why it changes the result |
|---|---|---|
| Function and performance | Output, capacity, quality, safety and operating conditions. | A product that performs less work is not automatically lower impact per equivalent service. |
| Expected life | Useful years, cycles, washes, hours or other service measure; include maintenance and repair. | A higher-impact item at manufacture may perform better over a longer life, while a fragile item may need replacement. |
| Metric | For example, kilograms of carbon-dioxide equivalent, litres of water or a defined toxicity indicator. | Different metrics answer different questions and cannot be silently substituted. |
| Life-cycle boundary | Cradle-to-gate, use and maintenance, disposal, or the complete life cycle. | A cradle-to-gate result excludes impacts that occur after the factory, so it cannot be ranked directly against a full-life result. |
| Geography and time | Country or region, electricity mix, waste system and assessment year. | Energy, transport, recycling and disposal conditions vary by place and change over time. |
| End of life | Actual collection, reuse, recycling, composting or disposal route available to the user. | A theoretical recovery route is not the same as one a household can access. |
Include repairability, reuse, recycled content, operating energy or water, packaging and end-of-life only when the evidence is comparable and relevant. If one seller reports cradle-to-gate impacts and another reports use and disposal, label the comparison incomplete instead of declaring a winner.
A repeatable step-by-step comparison workflow
- Define the job. Write the performance the product must deliver, including capacity, safety, quality and expected frequency of use.
- Collect primary claims. Save the exact product-page or package wording and every qualifier or footnote.
- Build the five-field record. Enter the claim, scope, life-cycle stage, baseline and evidence. Mark missing fields as “not stated.”
- Separate attributes. Keep recycled content, renewable feedstock, energy source, chemical hazard, durability and packaging in different rows. Do not turn several partial claims into one overall score.
- Check the baseline. For “reduced,” “less” or “better,” identify the comparison product or previous version, the date and the geography.
- Check the method. Look for an LCA, test protocol, environmental declaration or certification criteria. Confirm that the method covers the metric being claimed.
- Normalize the function. Convert results to the same functional unit and account for how many units, cycles or years each product is expected to deliver.
- Align boundaries. Compare like with like: the same life-cycle stages, assumptions about use and disposal, and treatment of packaging and transport.
- Inspect labels. Read the standard, audit arrangement, scope and governance. Treat an unexplained logo as unverified.
- List trade-offs and gaps. Record improvements, possible burdens elsewhere and data that are not available. Do not fill a gap with a favorable assumption.
- State the conclusion at the right strength. Say “lower reported cradle-to-gate emissions under these assumptions,” not “the sustainable product,” when the evidence supports only the narrower statement.
How to handle incomplete or conflicting information
One product has an LCA and the other has marketing claims
Do not treat the LCA as proof that its product is better in every respect, but do give its quantified, defined result more weight for the metric and boundary it covers. Report the other product as unverified for that comparison unless it supplies equivalent data.
The declarations use different boundaries
Keep the results separate and label the comparison incomplete. Ask the sellers or manufacturers for aligned data; do not add an assumed use or disposal phase to one product or remove it from the other merely to make the numbers line up.
The certification criteria are inaccessible
Record the label as a marketing signal whose scope and verification cannot be assessed. A familiar-looking emblem is not a substitute for published requirements and an audit method.

The product is sold in a different region
Check electricity generation, transport distances, collection systems and disposal rules for the place where the item will be used. A result from one geography may not transfer to another, especially when use-phase energy or end-of-life treatment is significant.
The “better” product does not last as long
Recalculate the comparison using the service delivered rather than one unit purchased. Include repair, replacement parts, maintenance and the number of replacements required over the same period.
An illustrative claim audit
Imagine two lamps marketed for household reading. Lamp A says “eco-friendly lamp made from renewable materials.” Lamp B publishes energy consumption per hour, an expected operating life, a material breakdown and a product-specific environmental declaration.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe wording does not prove that Lamp A is preferable. You would ask which material is renewable, how much of the lamp it represents, what impacts the claim addresses and whether the lamp’s life and electricity demand differ. For Lamp B, you would still check the declaration’s functional unit, geography, assessment year and life-cycle boundary. If Lamp B’s document covers only manufacture while Lamp A supplies verified use-phase data, the comparison remains incomplete rather than automatically favoring either lamp.
A defensible conclusion might therefore be limited to a documented metric and boundary—for example, “Lamp B has quantified manufacturing impacts under the stated declaration; no product-wide conclusion is possible because Lamp A lacks comparable data.” That wording is less dramatic than a green-versus-not-green verdict, but it tells the buyer what is actually known.
Practical checklist before you choose
- Have I replaced every broad environmental adjective with a specific attribute?
- Is the quantity stated, and is it clear whether it applies to the product, a component or the package?
- Do I know the baseline for every “less,” “reduced” or “better” claim?
- Are the geography, date, functional unit and life-cycle boundary stated?
- Does the evidence use a disclosed test method, LCA, environmental declaration or certification standard?
- Have I checked whether the label is independently audited and what its criteria cover?
- Did I distinguish post-consumer recycled material from manufacturing scrap?
- Did I avoid treating renewable as automatically recyclable, biodegradable or low-impact?
- Did I check durability, performance, repair and replacement needs?
- Are the claimed disposal or recycling routes available where I will use the product?
- Have I recorded trade-offs and missing data instead of guessing?
- Is my final statement no broader than the evidence?
The most reliable comparison is often a bounded one: a specific product, function, metric and life-cycle stage supported by transparent evidence. When the data do not support an overall ranking, the honest result is to identify what can be compared, what cannot, and which additional information would change the decision.
