To prevent duplicate payments, give each order a stable payment record, retry the same payment operation with the provider’s idempotency mechanism, and confirm the final outcome with the provider before fulfilling the order. A checkout timeout does not prove the payment failed: the provider may have processed it even if your site never received the response. Starting a second payment instead of safely retrying the first can charge the customer twice.
Why failed payments and duplicate orders happen
Checkout involves several systems: the shopper’s browser, your store, the payment provider, and sometimes the bank. A network interruption can prevent a response from reaching your store after the provider has already received or processed the request. The order may therefore look unpaid in your system even though a payment is still processing or has succeeded.
Another source of duplicates is a shopper opening or submitting more than one checkout session. Reusing the same order reference does not necessarily make those sessions one payment. Adyen says it does not check incoming merchant references for uniqueness, and treats separately created sessions as unique payment requests. Adyen’s duplicate-transaction guidance explains how to investigate these cases.

Build a reliable order-to-payment flow
Keep a stable link between the order and its payment
In your own system, associate each logical order or checkout session with its payment record and current status. Do not rely on an order reference alone to stop the provider from creating another payment. For Stripe specifically, the API guidance is to create exactly one PaymentIntent per order or customer session. A PaymentIntent can move through multiple statuses and can have at most one successful charge; these are Stripe-specific behaviors, not rules that apply to every provider. Stripe’s PaymentIntent documentation describes that model.

Make retries idempotent
An idempotency key tells a provider that repeated requests represent the same logical operation, so an uncertain retry does not perform the action again. Adyen documents retrying a timed-out API request with the same idempotency-key header; if the original request was already processed, the provider returns its first response. Its documentation says keys remain valid for 7 to 14 days after first submission. That period and behavior are specific to Adyen, so check the rules for your provider and integration. Adyen’s API idempotency documentation covers its implementation.
Generate a key once for a logical operation and retain it for retries of that operation. Adyen recommends UUIDs and keys unique to the company account; its documentation also notes limitations related to regional endpoint scope. A genuinely new payment operation needs a new key. Do not create a fresh key merely because a request timed out.

Use provider-confirmed outcomes to update order status
Treat payment as a sequence of states, not an immediate yes-or-no result from the browser. For an Adyen Checkout session, the outcome is delivered in an AUTHORISATION webhook. Adyen also recommends asynchronous server-to-server webhooks to help track outcomes when data-transmission timeouts leave a response missing. Validate and process the provider’s webhook, match it to the intended order, and update fulfillment only when the relevant confirmed state supports doing so. See Adyen’s Sessions flow documentation.

- Keep the existing payment attempt. Mark the outcome as unknown or pending in your system rather than immediately treating the order as unpaid.
- Check for a provider response or event. Look up the payment using the provider’s supported identifiers, and process any webhook that confirms its state.
- If retrying the same API operation, reuse its idempotency key. Follow the provider’s scope, retention, and request-matching rules. Do not submit the same logical operation under a new identity just to get a response.
- Reconcile the confirmed result with the order. Record the resulting payment status and only proceed with fulfillment when that status meets your business rules.
- Start a new payment only when the provider records establish that a new attempt is appropriate. Keep it distinct from the original attempt while preserving the order-to-payment relationship.
How to investigate a customer’s report of two charges
Do not infer that two completed charges exist solely from two entries on a bank statement, and do not promise a refund or ask the shopper to pay again before checking the provider’s records. For Adyen, compare the transaction’s PSP references and statuses. Two unique PSP references indicate distinct payment records; one reference may correspond to a bank display that looks like two entries. Adyen notes that pending authorization and capture display behavior can explain some apparent duplicates. The timing for a pending entry to disappear depends on the bank, so avoid promising a fixed release time. Adyen’s troubleshooting guidance gives more detail.

- Find the provider transaction records associated with the order and compare their references.
- Check whether each record is pending, authorized, captured, failed, or otherwise final according to that provider’s status model.
- Match each provider record to your internal payment attempt, checkout session, and order.
- Explain what the records establish, distinguishing a pending bank display from separate provider payment records.
Handle capture and refund failures as separate events
A successful authorization does not guarantee that a later capture or refund succeeds. Adyen documents CAPTURE_FAILED and REFUND_FAILED webhook events; online capture and refund webhooks can include structured refusal reasons. Process those events separately from the initial authorization outcome and investigate the refusal details before initiating another operation. See Adyen’s online payments documentation.
