An automatic Rust restart needs two separate components: a uMod/Oxide plugin to schedule a graceful shutdown and warn players, plus an external launcher or service that starts RustDedicated again after it exits. A plugin can count down, send chat or UI notices, and close the server cleanly; Oxide itself does not relaunch a stopped process.
Understand the two-layer restart design
Many failed restart setups use a plugin correctly but omit the process supervisor. The plugin controls what happens inside the running Rust server. The launcher, operating-system service, container policy, or hosting panel controls what happens after the executable terminates.

What the restart plugin does
- Stores one or more scheduled restart times.
- Begins a configurable countdown before shutdown.
- Sends warning messages in chat and, where supported, displays an on-screen UI.
- Allows players to finish fights, leave dangerous areas, and prepare for the save and disconnect.
- Requests a normal server shutdown rather than abruptly killing the process.
What the external supervisor does
- Launches the same Rust server executable with its normal identity and configuration.
- Waits for the process to exit.
- Starts it again after a clean plugin-triggered shutdown or an unexpected crash.
- Keeps the server available without requiring an administrator to log in and click Start.
Oxide documentation states that its core has no built-in automatic-restart function, although launcher-script templates include restart behavior. Smooth Restarter makes the same boundary explicit: it shuts the server down but cannot relaunch it, so an external solution is required.

What you need before configuring restarts
- A running Rust dedicated server with uMod/Oxide installed and loading normally.
- Administrative access to the server console or its host machine.
- Permission to edit the plugin’s JSON configuration file.
- Access to F1, the server console, or RCON for checking plugin state and errors.
- A launcher, service, container policy, or hosting-panel setting that can start the server process after exit.
- A maintenance window in which you can observe a complete warning, shutdown, and relaunch cycle.
Keep a copy of the current launcher arguments and configuration before changing anything. The relaunch layer must start the same server identity, map settings, world seed, ports, storage paths, and other arguments already used by your installation. Changing those arguments while adding restart automation can make a healthy restart look like data loss or a new server.

Choose a plugin that matches your warning needs
The two documented options below solve the scheduling and notification part of the problem. Neither replaces the external relaunch layer.

When Smooth Restarter is the better fit
Use Smooth Restarter when you want a visible, staged countdown. Its documented settings include the daily time format, when the countdown begins, the individual milestones players see, chat output, optional UI, and an option to restart when an updated Oxide version is detected. That combination is useful for communities that need more than one generic “server restarting” message.

When Server Restarter is the better fit
Use Server Restarter when several fixed restart times and a straightforward warning delay are the priority. Its configuration exposes RestartTimes, RestartWarning, and a localized message. The documented default message is:
Server restart in {0} seconds, get in a safe location.The {0} token is replaced with the remaining seconds by the plugin. Keep the wording clear and retain the token if you want the countdown value to appear.
Install and verify uMod/Oxide before scheduling anything
- Install the uMod/Oxide build intended for your current Rust server version, following the installation method for your operating system or host.
- Start the server once and watch the server console for the framework and plugin-loading messages.
- Place only one restart plugin in the server’s plugin directory. Running two schedulers can produce duplicate warnings or competing shutdown requests.
- Restart or reload the server as required by the plugin’s installation instructions.
- Confirm that the plugin appears as loaded and that no dependency, permission, or version error is reported.
- Open the F1 console, server console, or RCON when you need to inspect commands and errors. The access method does not change the need for the plugin to be loaded and for the issuing account to have the required permission.
If the plugin does not load, do not continue to schedule restarts. A missing DLL extension, an incompatible Rust/Oxide build, malformed JSON, or a file placed in the wrong directory must be corrected first.

Configure Smooth Restarter
Set the daily schedule
Open the plugin’s JSON configuration in the Oxide configuration directory and define the daily restart entries using the documented hh:mm format. Use the server’s actual clock and document its time zone for administrators and players. If the host changes time-zone or daylight-saving settings, verify the next scheduled run instead of assuming the old wall-clock time still applies.
Choose when warnings begin
Set the countdown initiation point far enough ahead of the shutdown for the activities on your server. A short countdown may be acceptable for a private test server; a public server with raids or events needs enough notice for players to reach a safe location. Smooth Restarter also supports custom countdown milestones, so you can send several decreasing time notices rather than one message.
Choose chat and UI output
Enable chat announcements for a notification that works for every connected player. The optional UI can make the remaining time more visible, but test it with the client versions and UI layout used by your community. If a UI message is distracting or overlaps another overlay, leave chat enabled and disable the UI component.
Decide whether Oxide updates should trigger a restart
Smooth Restarter documents an option to restart when it detects that Oxide is outdated. Enable that behavior only if the external supervisor is already proven to relaunch the server; otherwise an update-triggered shutdown can leave the server offline.
Apply and inspect the configuration
- Save the JSON without changing the plugin’s expected property names or data types.
- Use the plugin’s documented reload method, or restart the server during a maintenance window.
- Check the console for JSON parsing errors and confirmation that the new schedule was accepted.
- Make a controlled test run rather than waiting for the first production restart to discover a formatting problem.
Configure Server Restarter
Define the restart times
Set each planned time in the plugin’s RestartTimes configuration. Several entries can be used for a regular daily maintenance pattern. Keep the schedule in one time zone and publish that time zone to players so that a host migration or clock change does not create surprises.

Set the warning delay
RestartWarning controls how far in advance the plugin begins warning players. Select a value that leaves time for a normal save and for players to move to a safe location. The value is a configuration setting, not a performance statistic; its suitability depends on your server’s activity and maintenance routine.
Customize the localized message
Edit the localized message if your community uses another language or needs a different instruction. Preserve {0} when the remaining seconds should be inserted automatically. A useful message tells players both what will happen and what action to take, such as moving to safety and avoiding a last-minute trade or fight.
Reload and verify
- Save the JSON configuration.
- Reload the plugin using the method documented for your installation, or restart the server.
- Check the console for a successful load and for the schedule that was accepted.
- Run a short maintenance-window test before enabling the schedule on a busy server.
Add the external relaunch layer
The exact implementation depends on your host, but the control flow is always the same: start Rust, wait for it to exit, then start it again.
Launcher script
Facepunch’s server guidance documents a launcher pattern in which the RustDedicated command is placed under a start label and a goto start line follows it. When the process exits, execution returns to the label and launches the server again. Add that loop around your existing launch command; do not replace the arguments that identify your world, ports, save location, or server settings.
Keep the script in the same controlled location as the server files, restrict who can edit it, and test that it starts under the same account and working directory used for normal operation. If your script also performs update or backup work, ensure those operations finish before the next launch.

Operating-system service
A service manager can supervise RustDedicated, record exit status, and apply a restart policy. Configure it to invoke the same executable and arguments used during manual startup. Confirm that the service account can read the server files, write saves and logs, bind the required ports, and access any update or backup directories.
Container or hosting panel
A container policy or managed hosting panel can provide the same supervision without a hand-maintained script. Look for a setting that restarts the application when its process exits, not merely a button that starts it once. The panel must preserve the server’s identity and configuration on every launch.
Prevent a restart loop during maintenance
An always-restart policy can be inconvenient when you intentionally stop the server for upgrades. Use the control offered by your supervisor to disable automatic relaunch temporarily, or stop the supervisor before replacing files. Re-enable it only after the server and its plugins are compatible.

Testing the plugin alone is not enough. The goal is to verify the entire chain from warning to relaunch.
- Announce a maintenance test and choose a time when a failed restart will not disrupt an event.
- Set or invoke a restart schedule that gives you time to observe every warning milestone.
- Join as a normal player and confirm that chat messages appear. If enabled, confirm that the UI is readable and disappears appropriately when the server closes.
- Watch the server console for the expected countdown, save activity, and clean process exit.
- Verify that the supervisor detects the exit and starts the same Rust server configuration again.
- Reconnect and confirm the server identity, world, save state, ports, and plugin set are unchanged.
- Record the observed times and any console errors so future upgrades can be compared with a known-good run.
This is an operational recommendation rather than a reported benchmark. A restart that appears successful from the console but fails player reconnection is not complete; check the supervisor and network-facing configuration as well as the plugin.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The server shuts down but never starts again
This is the defining symptom of a missing process supervisor. Confirm that a batch loop, service restart policy, container policy, or hosting-panel auto-restart setting is active. Then verify that it launches the same executable with the same arguments and working directory. Smooth Restarter explicitly cannot perform this relaunch itself.

- Confirm the plugin is loaded and has no JSON parsing error.
- Check that the configured time uses the plugin’s required format and the host’s actual clock.
- Verify that the warning delay or countdown-start setting is not disabled or set after the shutdown point.
- Check chat and UI options separately; a disabled UI does not necessarily mean chat notices are disabled.
- Make sure a second restart plugin is not replacing or conflicting with the first schedule.
The schedule is accepted but never fires
Inspect the loaded configuration rather than only the file on disk. A malformed edit may leave the previous configuration active, while a time-zone mismatch can make a valid schedule appear broken. Reload the plugin or restart during a maintenance window and watch the console for the schedule it actually loaded.
Commands report unknown command or permission errors
Issue commands from the F1 console, server console, or RCON using an account with the required administrative permission. Confirm that the plugin is loaded before troubleshooting command syntax. Plugin command names and permission nodes can change between releases, so use the command and permission names documented with the exact version installed on your server.
The plugin stopped loading after an update
Check Rust/Oxide compatibility and any DLL extensions first. Extensions must match the server and Oxide versions, and replacing a DLL requires the server to be stopped. Do not overwrite an in-use extension while the process is running. After replacement, start the server, inspect the console, and confirm every required plugin loads before re-enabling scheduled restarts.
Players see duplicate or conflicting warnings
Look for two active restart plugins, two scheduler entries at the same time, or a plugin schedule combined with a hosting-panel shutdown task. Keep one authoritative in-server schedule and one external relaunch policy. The external layer should respond to process exit; it should not independently issue a second player-facing shutdown message.

Maintain the setup through Rust and Oxide updates
- Check plugin compatibility whenever Rust or Oxide changes.
- Stop the server before replacing DLL extensions, then verify the versions match.
- Back up JSON configuration files before editing or upgrading a plugin.
- Review whether a plugin update changed setting names, default warning text, or UI behavior.
- Test one complete warning-and-relaunch cycle after maintenance, even if the schedule itself was not changed.
- Keep the launcher or service definition under access control so an accidental edit cannot change the server identity or disable supervision.
Because plugin names, compatibility requirements, hosting features, and configuration options can change, verify the documentation for the exact release installed on your server before applying an upgrade.
Design warnings players can act on
A technically correct countdown can still frustrate players if it does not explain what to do. Use milestones that become progressively more urgent, identify the remaining time, and tell players to move to a safe location. Avoid promising a precise return time unless your supervisor and host consistently relaunch within that interval. For multilingual communities, use the localization facility provided by the plugin rather than sending a second, conflicting message from another automation layer.
