The safest WordPress deployment pipeline keeps code in Git, tests every change on staging, and requires an approved promotion to production. A practical setup uses GitHub Actions with separate staging and production environments: pull requests run checks, merges deploy automatically to staging, and a protected production environment releases only after a reviewer approves it. Database content is handled separately from code, with a fresh backup and explicit migration steps before each production release.

What a Git-based WordPress deployment automates

A deployment pipeline moves a tested version of your WordPress code from a repository to a server without relying on someone to copy files manually. The pipeline can build assets, run linting and tests, connect to staging, execute WP-CLI commands, clear caches, and record exactly which commit is live.

Automation should cover reproducible code, not blindly replace the entire live site. Keep custom themes, custom plugins, must-use plugins, Composer manifests, build files, configuration templates, and deployment scripts in Git. Keep passwords, API tokens, SSH keys, and database credentials in GitHub environment secrets or in the host’s secret store. Posts, pages, media, comments, orders, form submissions, and other editorial or transactional records belong to the WordPress database and need a synchronization or migration plan.

The target release flow

  1. A developer opens a pull request against the release branch.
  2. Continuous-integration jobs run PHP, JavaScript, coding-standard, security, and build checks.
  3. After review and merge, a push to the staging branch deploys the merged commit automatically.
  4. Browser, integration, plugin, and WP-CLI checks run against staging.
  5. Before promotion, the operator exports the production database and confirms a files backup.
  6. A manually approved production job deploys the exact tested commit through a protected environment.
  7. Post-deployment WP-CLI tasks apply migrations, update URLs when required, flush caches, and perform health checks.

GitHub describes environments as targets such as production, staging, or development. Environment protection rules can require reviewers, restrict which branches may deploy, and expose secrets only to approved jobs. Concurrency groups ensure that only one deployment for a given environment runs at a time.

Decide what belongs in Git before writing a workflow

Put in Git Keep out of Git How to handle it
Custom themes and plugins Posts, pages, and revisions Migrate or synchronize through a documented content process
Must-use plugins and application code Media uploads Back up and transfer files separately, or use the host’s media storage process
Composer manifests and lock files Comments, orders, and form entries Protect production data; never overwrite it casually with staging data
Build configuration and deployment scripts Passwords, API tokens, SSH keys, and database credentials Store values in environment secrets or the hosting platform
Configuration templates Environment-specific values and live database dumps Inject values at deploy time and keep dumps in protected backup storage

WordPress core and third-party plugins can also be managed in a lockfile or by a controlled host process, but do not mix an untracked manual change with a Git release. If an administrator edits a production plugin or theme directly, the next deployment can remove that change. Treat the repository as the source of truth for every file the pipeline owns.

Design the GitHub Actions workflow

Use separate triggers for validation, staging, and production

  • pull_request validates proposed changes without deploying them.
  • push to the staging branch deploys automatically after a merge.
  • workflow_dispatch starts a production release when an operator is ready.

Create two GitHub environments named staging and production. Put staging credentials only in the staging environment. Put production credentials only in production, and add required reviewers to production. Restrict the production environment to the release branch. A concurrency group such as wordpress-production prevents two production releases from running at once.

Example workflow structure

The following is a starting pattern. Replace the deployment commands with those required by your host; the example intentionally leaves host-specific transfer details to your platform.

name: WordPress deployment

on:
  pull_request:
    branches: [main]
  push:
    branches: [staging]
  workflow_dispatch:
    inputs:
      ref:
        description: 'Commit or release branch to deploy'
        required: true
        default: 'main'

concurrency:
  group: wordpress-${{ github.event_name == 'workflow_dispatch' && 'production' || 'staging' }}
  cancel-in-progress: false

jobs:
  checks:
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - name: Install dependencies
        run: composer install --no-interaction --prefer-dist
      - name: Run application checks
        run: |
          composer validate --no-check-publish
          # Add PHP, JavaScript, and security checks used by your project

  deploy-staging:
    if: github.event_name == 'push' && github.ref == 'refs/heads/staging'
    needs: checks
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    environment: staging
    concurrency:
      group: wordpress-staging
      cancel-in-progress: false
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
      - name: Deploy to staging
        run: ./scripts/deploy-staging.sh
        env:
          SSH_PRIVATE_KEY: ${{ secrets.SSH_PRIVATE_KEY }}
          DEPLOY_HOST: ${{ secrets.DEPLOY_HOST }}

  deploy-production:
    if: github.event_name == 'workflow_dispatch'
    needs: checks
    runs-on: ubuntu-latest
    environment: production
    concurrency:
      group: wordpress-production
      cancel-in-progress: false
    steps:
      - uses: actions/checkout@v4
        with:
          ref: ${{ inputs.ref }}
      - name: Deploy to production
        run: ./scripts/deploy-production.sh
        env:
          SSH_PRIVATE_KEY: ${{ secrets.SSH_PRIVATE_KEY }}
          DEPLOY_HOST: ${{ secrets.DEPLOY_HOST }}
          DB credentials: ${{ secrets.DB_CREDENTIALS }}

Pin action versions rather than following a moving branch, and review upgrades on staging. The sample is deliberately illustrative: use a secret name such as DB_CREDENTIALS without a space in a real workflow, and ensure shell scripts fail on errors, validate the target host, and do not print secrets.

Configure the production gate in GitHub

  1. Open the repository’s Settings, then Environments, and create production.
  2. Add one or more required reviewers under the environment’s protection rules.
  3. Limit deployment branches to the release branch, such as main.
  4. Add production-only secrets and variables in that environment.
  5. Repeat the process for staging, but normally leave its deployment unblocked so merges can publish automatically.
  6. Confirm that the workflow job declares environment: production; without that declaration, the protection rule and environment secrets do not apply.

Use a manual approval for production even when staging is fully automatic. It gives an operator a chance to check the staging result, confirm the database backup, coordinate a content freeze if needed, and stop a release when an external dependency or a business event makes the timing unsafe.

Build and verify staging before promotion

Make staging representative

Staging should use the same PHP version, WordPress version, plugin versions, web-server behavior, and build process as production whenever the host permits. A staging site that lacks the production caching layer or uses different PHP extensions can produce false confidence. Keep its URL and credentials in environment configuration, not in committed code.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Refresh staging deliberately. A full production database copy can expose customer data and can also overwrite test content. When a refresh is necessary, restrict access, remove or anonymize personal data where appropriate, and document which tables are copied. For many releases, deploying code to an existing staging database is safer than replacing the whole database.

Checks worth automating

  • PHP syntax, coding standards, static analysis, and unit tests for custom code.
  • JavaScript linting and production asset compilation.
  • Plugin activation and deactivation checks in a disposable WordPress instance.
  • WP-CLI commands that verify the expected WordPress version, active theme, required plugins, and database schema.
  • Browser checks for login, the home page, key templates, forms, checkout or membership paths, and the administrative dashboard.
  • HTTP health checks that fail on unexpected redirects, error responses, missing assets, or PHP warnings.

Run tests against the deployed staging URL, not only against source files. A successful build does not prove that file permissions, rewrite rules, environment variables, object caching, or a migration work on the server.

Handle the WordPress database safely

Git records code changes; it does not merge live editorial data. Before a production release, decide whether the change needs a schema migration, option update, content migration, or URL replacement. Write those actions as repeatable scripts and run them in a known order.

Back up before changing production

Export the database and verify that the resulting file is readable and stored outside the web root. Also confirm that the host’s files backup covers uploads and any server-side configuration the deployment may touch. Record the backup timestamp and the commit being released so a rollback has a clear target.

wp db export backup.sql

The command is a pre-deployment export, not a complete disaster-recovery strategy by itself. Retain backups according to your operational policy and test restoration periodically.

Run migrations and URL changes in order

  1. Put the site in the maintenance mode or deployment state appropriate for your host if the migration could produce inconsistent reads.
  2. Deploy the code that understands the new schema or options.
  3. Run the migration script or WP-CLI command once, with logging and an explicit success or failure exit code.
  4. Use search-replace only when the environment URL really changes. WP-CLI handles serialized values when used correctly:
wp search-replace 'https://staging.example.com' 'https://example.com' --all-tables

Review the search-replace output before accepting it. Exclude tables that contain unrelated data when your migration plan requires that, and take the backup first. Do not copy a complete staging database over production merely to publish a few options or pages; that can erase orders, comments, form entries, and new editorial work.

Finish with cache and health tasks

wp cache flush

After flushing, request representative public and authenticated pages, inspect the logs, and verify that scheduled tasks, REST endpoints, forms, and critical integrations still work. If your site uses a page cache or CDN outside WordPress, purge it through the host’s supported command or API as a separate, logged step.

Promote and roll back a release

Production promotion checklist

  • The staging commit is the exact commit selected for production.
  • Required reviewers have approved the production environment job.
  • The database and files backups completed before deployment.
  • Any content freeze, maintenance notice, or stakeholder communication is in place.
  • Database migrations are idempotent or have a documented reverse procedure.
  • Only one production deployment is active.

A rollback is usually a code rollback to the last known-good commit followed by the cache and health steps again. Database rollback is different: restoring a dump can remove legitimate content created after the backup. Prefer forward fixes for additive schema changes, and restore a database only when the incident plan explicitly accounts for lost writes and the timing of the restore.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Make releases traceable

Tag production releases or record the commit SHA in the deployment log. Keep the workflow output, migration output, backup location, approver, and post-deployment checks together. This makes it possible to answer which code is live, what changed, and whether a failed release stopped before or after database changes.

Self-managed GitHub Actions or managed WordPress hosting?

Both approaches can implement the same gated flow. The difference is how much infrastructure you operate yourself.

Decision area Self-managed GitHub Actions Managed WordPress option
Repository and deployment integration Full control over workflow files, scripts, runners, and branch rules Often provides a guided repository connection and host-specific deployment steps
Staging creation and refresh You provision, refresh, secure, and document environments The host may provide one-click staging or development environments; verify plan and region limits
Production approval and rollback GitHub environments, reviewers, branch restrictions, and your rollback scripts May combine host controls with Git-based releases; confirm how approvals and restores work
Database migration tooling WP-CLI and scripts that you maintain May include WP-CLI, SSH, and post-deployment script hooks
Secrets and access GitHub environment secrets plus server-side access you administer Host secret storage and managed access, subject to provider controls
Backups, cache, and observability You select tools, retention, alerts, and purge mechanisms Some are integrated, but retention, alerting, and cache behavior vary by plan
Operating cost More engineering and maintenance responsibility; infrastructure costs depend on your stack Higher platform dependence in exchange for less infrastructure work; verify current pricing and limits

WordPress.com GitHub Deployments

WordPress.com documents a GitHub Deployments workflow that connects a repository and deploys plugin, theme, or full-site code to staging or production. Its guidance recommends automatic deployments for staging and manual deployments for production. Studio Sync is presented as an alternative when Git version control is not available or necessary. Confirm the supported project types, environment behavior, and current plan limits before standardizing on it.

WP Engine capabilities

A 2026 WP Engine developer whitepaper describes one-click staging and development environments, Git and CI/CD integrations, SSH Gateway access, WP-CLI, and post-deployment scripts for database migrations, cache clearing, and feature activation. These are vendor-documented capabilities rather than performance guarantees; verify availability, plan restrictions, region, and current limits for the account you will use.

Security and reliability controls

  • Never commit a .env file containing production values, a private key, or a database dump.
  • Use least-privilege deployment accounts and separate staging and production keys.
  • Rotate keys and tokens when a team member leaves or a runner is compromised.
  • Pin third-party Actions versions and review their permissions.
  • Set workflow permissions to the minimum required, preferably read-only unless a job must write.
  • Mask secrets and ensure shell tracing cannot print them.
  • Require review for production and limit that environment to the intended branch.
  • Use concurrency controls so an older, slower job cannot overwrite a newer release.
  • Test backups by restoring them to an isolated environment.
  • Re-test after WordPress core, plugin, theme, host, or Actions-interface upgrades; those components change over time.

Troubleshoot common deployment failures

The workflow is waiting for approval

Check that the job declares the correct environment and that required reviewers are available. A job targeting staging will not satisfy a rule configured on production. If approval is intentionally required, approve it from the Actions run after reviewing the commit and staging result.

Production has old code after a successful job

Confirm that the deployment script checked out the intended ref, that the host’s release directory points to the new commit, and that opcode, object, page, or CDN caches were purged. Compare the live commit marker with the Actions run rather than relying on a browser’s cached response.

The deployment fails on a database migration

Stop subsequent steps, preserve the logs, and determine whether the migration ran partially. Do not rerun a non-idempotent script blindly. Restore staging from a production-like backup, fix the migration, and test it there. If production data is at risk, use the documented recovery procedure and communicate which writes may be affected.

Search-replace creates broken links

Check that the old and new URLs include the correct scheme, host, and path, and that the command ran against the intended tables. Use the pre-change export to recover if necessary, then test serialized settings, media URLs, REST responses, canonical tags, and redirects on staging before retrying.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A staging refresh erased test data

Treat refresh as a destructive operation. Restrict it to an approved job, announce the refresh window, and keep staging-only fixtures in a script that can be reloaded. If production data is copied, anonymize sensitive records and limit access to the refreshed environment.

A practical operating routine

For each change, open a pull request, wait for automated checks, merge to the release path, and let staging deploy without manual file copying. Test the deployed site, then select the tested commit in a manually triggered production workflow. Approve only after confirming backups and the migration plan. Let the workflow run WP-CLI migrations and cache tasks, perform health checks, and record the release identifier. Keep the previous known-good commit and backup available until the release has passed its observation period.
