The reliable approach is a two-layer visual regression pipeline: deterministic Storybook stories for component states, plus Playwright journeys for real storefront flows. Run both against seeded commerce data, pinned browsers, fixed viewports and controlled timing. Make every diff a pull-request check, and change a baseline only when a reviewer confirms that the UI change is intentional.
What visual regression testing covers in a composable storefront
A composable storefront assembles independently deployed pieces such as a headless CMS, product search, pricing, promotions, inventory, checkout and payment handoff. A functional test can pass while a visual defect still hides a price, clips a promotion, shifts a button below the fold or breaks a mobile navigation menu.
Visual regression testing captures a rendered state, compares it with an approved baseline and presents the difference for review. The useful unit is not just a page URL. It is a state defined by data, viewport, locale, currency, feature flags, theme and browser.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

| Layer | What to model | What it catches best |
|---|---|---|
| Storybook component layer | Product cards, price blocks, promotion banners, navigation, search results, mini-cart, forms, loading, empty, error and out-of-stock states | CSS, layout, typography and component-state regressions in isolation |
| Playwright journey layer | Category browsing, search, product detail, add-to-cart, cart edits, sign-in and checkout handoff | Integration defects caused by routing, responsive composition, real page context and cross-component behavior |
Chromatic recommends combining isolated Storybook tests with Playwright or Cypress end-to-end tests because the layers expose different classes of regressions. A hosted service can archive the DOM, styles and assets and provide review tooling; a self-managed Playwright pipeline keeps comparison artifacts in your own CI system.

1. Define the visual contract before writing tests
Write down the customer-visible states that must remain stable. This prevents a large suite of arbitrary screenshots and makes every baseline explainable.
Commerce states to include
- Responsive header, navigation drawer and footer.
- Product cards with one image, multiple images, long titles, sale prices, missing inventory and unavailable variants.
- Price blocks showing regular price, discount, tax-inclusive or tax-exclusive presentation and currency formatting.
- Promotion banners with short and long copy, expired offers and multiple stacked promotions.
- Search suggestions, no-result results, filters, sort controls and pagination.
- Product detail loading, image gallery, selected variant, out-of-stock and error states.
- Mini-cart and cart quantity changes, remove actions, empty cart and failed update states.
- Authentication screens, validation errors and the transition to a hosted checkout.
- API errors, skeletons, slow-loading images and fallback content.
Record the dimensions for every state
For each story or journey, specify viewport width and height, browser, device emulation, locale, currency, timezone, tax display, theme, feature flags and the exact seeded product data. If a dimension does not represent a real customer risk, leave it out; every additional browser, locale or theme multiplies capture time and review volume.
2. Make rendering deterministic
A screenshot comparison is only useful when the same inputs produce the same pixels. Control all sources of incidental variation before adding more snapshots.
Control data and time
- Use fixtures or mocked API responses for Storybook. For Playwright, seed a known catalog, prices, promotions, inventory and customer account before the test.
- Freeze the clock so labels such as “just now,” delivery dates and promotion countdowns do not change between runs.
- Replace random IDs and experiment assignments with fixed values. Disable A/B allocation for visual jobs.
- Use a stable locale, currency, timezone and tax configuration. A different decimal separator or date format is a legitimate visual change, not noise.
Control browser rendering
- Pin the browser version and install the same Playwright browser binaries in CI.
- Use named viewport presets rather than a developer’s current window size.
- Wait for web fonts and critical images. Capture only after the layout has settled and lazy-loaded content required by the state is present.
- Disable CSS transitions, animations and caret blinking for snapshot runs. Keep a separate functional test if animation behavior itself matters.
- Use a consistent color scheme, reduced-motion preference and device scale factor.
/* visual-test.css */
*, *::before, *::after {
animation-duration: 0s !important;
animation-delay: 0s !important;
transition: none !important;
caret-color: transparent !important;
}
These controls follow from how snapshot systems compare rendered DOM, styles and assets across configured browser and viewport combinations. If fonts load after capture or an image changes size during capture, the diff describes timing rather than a product change.
3. Build Storybook coverage first
Create one story for each meaningful state, not merely one story for each component name. A product-card story should include sale, unavailable, long-title and image-failure variants if those states can alter the buying experience.
Example state story with an interaction
import type { Meta, StoryObj } from '@storybook/react';
import { expect, userEvent, within } from '@storybook/test';
import { ProductCard } from './ProductCard';
const meta = {
title: 'Commerce/ProductCard',
component: ProductCard,
parameters: {
layout: 'centered',
},
} satisfies Meta<typeof ProductCard>;
export default meta;
type Story = StoryObj<typeof meta>;
export const Discounted: Story = {
args: {
name: 'Trail jacket with a deliberately long product name',
price: 79.99,
compareAtPrice: 109.99,
currency: 'USD',
inventory: 'in-stock',
imageUrl: '/fixtures/trail-jacket.webp',
},
};
export const OutOfStock: Story = {
args: {
...Discounted.args,
inventory: 'out-of-stock',
},
};
export const MenuInteraction: Story = {
render: () => <ProductCard {...Discounted.args} />,
play: async ({ canvasElement }) => {
const canvas = within(canvasElement);
await userEvent.click(canvas.getByRole('button', { name: /size/i }));
await expect(canvas.getByRole('listbox')).toBeVisible();
},
};
Include loading, empty, error, out-of-stock, discount and long-text stories. Add play functions for interactions such as opening a menu, typing a search term or changing a quantity. Chromatic waits for play functions before capturing a snapshot, so the captured image represents the post-interaction state rather than the initial render.

Keep fixtures close to the story
Store representative images and API responses with the Storybook test assets. Avoid live pricing or inventory calls in component snapshots. If a component needs a provider, create a fixed decorator that supplies the same theme, locale and feature flags for every run.
4. Add Playwright journeys for storefront behavior
Choose a small set of high-value flows rather than screenshotting every route. Capture after navigation settles, after an item is added to the cart, after a cart edit and at the checkout transition. Keep behavioral assertions beside visual checkpoints so a broken interaction and a pixel difference remain distinguishable.
Playwright configuration with fixed projects
import { defineConfig, devices } from '@playwright/test';
export default defineConfig({
testDir: './tests/visual',
fullyParallel: true,
use: {
baseURL: 'http://127.0.0.1:3000',
locale: 'en-US',
timezoneId: 'UTC',
colorScheme: 'light',
reducedMotion: 'reduce',
trace: 'retain-on-failure',
},
projects: [
{
name: 'desktop-chromium',
use: {
...devices['Desktop Chrome'],
viewport: { width: 1440, height: 900 },
},
},
{
name: 'mobile-chromium',
use: {
...devices['Pixel 5'],
viewport: { width: 393, height: 851 },
},
},
],
});
Journey example
import { test, expect } from '@playwright/test';
test('search, add to cart and review cart', async ({ page }) => {
await page.goto('/search?q=trail+jacket');
await page.evaluate(() => document.fonts.ready);
await expect(page.getByRole('heading', { name: /trail jacket/i })).toBeVisible();
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('search-trail-jacket.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
});
await page.getByRole('link', { name: /trail jacket/i }).first().click();
await page.getByRole('button', { name: /add to cart/i }).click();
await expect(page.getByRole('status')).toContainText(/added/i);
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('product-added-to-cart.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
});
await page.getByRole('link', { name: /cart/i }).click();
await page.getByRole('spinbutton', { name: /quantity/i }).fill('2');
await expect(page).toHaveScreenshot('cart-quantity-two.png', {
fullPage: true,
animations: 'disabled',
});
});
Chromatic’s documented Playwright integration extends Playwright’s test and expect utilities and supports Playwright 1.38.0 and newer. If you use that integration, verify the installed version meets that threshold before enabling the job.
5. Select browser, viewport and theme combinations deliberately
Start with the desktop and mobile widths used by your storefront analytics or design system. Add another browser, locale, theme or media feature only when it represents a known customer risk.
| Dimension | Include when | Cost to control |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop and mobile viewport | The layout has responsive breakpoints or different navigation | Each viewport adds captures and review work |
| Browser engine | CSS or font behavior differs across engines used by customers | Separate pinned browser installation and baselines |
| Locale and currency | Copy length, number formatting or tax labels change layout | More fixtures and translated content |
| Theme or dark mode | The storefront offers a real alternate theme | Separate visual contracts and asset checks |
| Reduced motion or high contrast | Accessibility settings alter the rendered layout | Additional projects and review paths |
Chromatic documents variation by browser, mobile emulator, viewport, theme and other configuration. Treat each variation as a product decision, not a default matrix expansion.
6. Establish baseline governance
The first approved run becomes the baseline. A later pull request should show the changed pixels and identify the reason for the change: for example, a redesigned sale badge, a corrected mobile breakpoint or a deliberate typography update.

Approval rules
- Require a visual status check on pull requests that modify storefront or component code.
- Assign a reviewer who understands both the design intent and the commerce impact.
- Reject diffs caused by missing fonts, live data, animation or third-party widgets; fix determinism instead of approving noise.
- Approve a baseline only after checking the rendered page at the affected viewport and state.
- Keep the code change and its baseline update in the same reviewed change whenever possible.
Salesforce’s composable-storefront guidance describes the same distinction: a failed snapshot can indicate a regression bug or an intended change. Update the snapshot only after confirming which one it is.
7. Run the pipeline in CI
Build the storefront and Storybook from the pull-request revision, install pinned dependencies, seed deterministic data, execute both visual layers, upload artifacts and publish a required status check.
Example CI sequence
name: visual-regression
on:
pull_request:
jobs:
visual:
runs-on: ubuntu-latest
steps:
- uses: actions/checkout@v4
with:
fetch-depth: 0
- uses: actions/setup-node@v4
with:
node-version-file: '.nvmrc'
cache: npm
- run: npm ci
- run: npm run build
- run: npx playwright install --with-deps chromium
- run: npm run seed:visual
- run: npm run storybook:build
- run: npx playwright test
- run: npx chromatic --project-token "$CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN" --playwright
env:
CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN: ${{ secrets.CHROMATIC_PROJECT_TOKEN }}
Use the default Storybook workflow or the explicit Chromatic CLI archive flags for Playwright, Vitest or Cypress when those integrations are configured. Store screenshots, traces, console logs and the seed-data version as build artifacts so a reviewer can reproduce a failure.
Baseline comparison needs enough Git history to identify the previous build; Chromatic’s quickstart notes that the checkout must include at least that prior history. A shallow checkout can therefore make a valid comparison unavailable even when the screenshots themselves succeeded.
Hosted review versus self-managed Playwright diffing
| Decision axis | Storybook plus hosted visual service | Playwright screenshots managed in CI |
|---|---|---|
| Best coverage | Isolated component states and variants | Full-page and cross-page commerce journeys |
| Review workflow | Hosted diffs, reviewer assignment and CI checks | Team-owned artifacts and review tooling |
| Data control | Requires careful fixtures and service configuration | Maximum control when browsers and data remain in your CI |
| Scaling dimensions | Convenient browser, device and viewport matrices | You own matrix orchestration and storage |
| Main risk | Vendor access, cost and baseline governance | Flake management and maintenance burden |
Choose hosted review when reviewer assignment, archived builds and managed rendering save more engineering time than they cost. Choose self-managed comparison when customer data, network access or artifact retention must remain inside your infrastructure. Either way, keep Storybook and Playwright: one does not replace the other.
How to stop screenshot tests becoming flaky
Wait for the state, not an arbitrary delay
Prefer a visible heading, loaded image, enabled button or completed network-backed state over a fixed sleep. A short delay can hide a slow CI machine while still capturing an incomplete page on another run.

Remove unstable third-party content
Block analytics, advertisements, chat widgets and recommendation calls that are not part of the visual contract, or replace them with fixtures. If a third-party element is customer-critical, capture a controlled test response rather than its live production output.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHandle lazy images explicitly
Scroll the page when the test contract includes below-the-fold media, wait for the image element to report completion and then capture. Otherwise, the baseline may contain a placeholder in one run and a loaded image in the next.
Diagnose before increasing tolerances
A larger pixel threshold can conceal a real regression. Inspect the diff, trace, console output, font requests, viewport, locale and fixture version first. Change comparison tolerances only when the rendering difference is an understood, repeatable artifact of the chosen browser.
Troubleshooting visual CI failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Large diff around every text block | Web font was not loaded or the browser changed | Wait for document.fonts.ready, package the font for tests and pin the browser version. |
| Only images differ | Live image URLs, lazy loading or responsive image selection | Use fixture images, wait for completion and capture at a fixed device scale factor. |
| Header shifts between runs | Animation, delayed personalization or experiment assignment | Disable motion and random assignments; wait for the final navigation state. |
| Mobile test shows desktop navigation | Viewport was set after navigation or the CSS breakpoint is misconfigured | Set the project viewport before the page opens and assert the expected menu control. |
| Cart total changes on every run | Unseeded price, tax, promotion or inventory data | Seed the complete commerce response and freeze time, locale, currency and tax mode. |
| Hosted comparison cannot find a baseline | CI checkout lacks the previous build’s Git history | Use a checkout depth that includes the prior revision and rerun the comparison. |
| Visual job passes but behavior is broken | Only a screenshot was asserted | Add role-based functional assertions for navigation, search, cart updates and checkout handoff. |
| Review queue grows too quickly | Too many browser, locale or theme combinations | Keep the matrix tied to customer risk and move low-risk combinations to a scheduled job. |
Performance, reliability and cost controls
- Run Storybook stories in parallel because they are isolated and usually cheaper to repeat than full journeys.
- Run the smallest Playwright journey set on every pull request; schedule broader locale and browser matrices separately when they are not release blockers.
- Reuse a built Storybook and seeded storefront artifact rather than rebuilding for every project.
- Cache package managers and browser binaries, but invalidate the cache when lockfiles or browser versions change.
- Keep screenshot names stable and include the state and viewport in the name so a failed artifact is self-explanatory.
- Retain the failed screenshot, diff, actual image, trace, console log and test data revision. Without those artifacts, a reviewer cannot tell a product regression from an environment problem.
Visual testing has no universal fixed cost: runtime and review volume depend on the number of stories, journeys, browsers, viewports, locales and retries. Measure those dimensions in your CI and remove combinations that do not represent customer risk.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need an image or PDF from a URL rather than a full browser-test harness, ScreenshotNeo is the first screenshot API to try because it removes consent banners, popups and chat widgets before capture, bills only clean shots, and has the lowest paid plan among the stated options. It can capture full pages, selected CSS elements, dark mode, custom viewports and retina output; wait for a selector, delay or network idle; apply custom CSS or JavaScript; block requests; use custom headers, cookies, user agents, authorization, timezone and geolocation; and return PNG, JPEG, WebP or PDF. It also supports caching with a chosen TTL, signed image links, asynchronous jobs with signed webhooks, bulk capture of up to 100 URLs per call, a usage API and an OpenAPI specification.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For a direct capture, see the ScreenshotNeo documentation and run:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
The same request in Python is:
import requests
r = requests.get(
'https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot',
params={'access_key': 'YOUR_API_KEY', 'url': 'https://stripe.com'},
timeout=90,
)
open('shot.webp', 'wb').write(r.content)
And in Node.js:
const q = new URLSearchParams({ access_key: 'YOUR_API_KEY', url: 'https://stripe.com' });
const res = await fetch(`https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot?${q}`);
const data = Buffer.from(await res.arrayBuffer());
Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads and cache hits are not billed, and each response identifies the result with X-Page-Verdict and X-Billed headers. ScreenshotNeo also provides an MCP server with take_screenshot, get_page_info and capture_pdf tools, so Claude, Cursor and other MCP clients can request captures. The Free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Create a free ScreenshotNeo account to start with those 1,000 monthly shots.

FAQ
Should every Storybook story also have a Playwright test?
No. Storybook should cover the component’s meaningful states; Playwright should cover a small set of customer journeys where integration and routing matter. Duplicate coverage increases maintenance without adding equivalent risk reduction.
Can a visual diff replace accessibility testing?
No. A screenshot cannot verify keyboard order, accessible names, focus behavior or screen-reader output. Keep automated accessibility and interaction assertions alongside visual checkpoints.
How should checkout hosted on another domain be handled?
Capture the storefront’s handoff state and the return or error state that your team controls. Test the external checkout separately under its permitted test environment instead of making a production third party part of every baseline.
When should a baseline be intentionally regenerated?
Regenerate it in the same reviewed change as a deliberate design-system, browser or fixture update, and record why the pixels changed. Do not regenerate globally just to make a noisy run pass.
What is the smallest useful first release of this system?
Start with critical product-card and price stories, one category-to-product-to-cart journey, one desktop viewport, one mobile viewport and deterministic fixtures. Expand only after those checks produce stable, reviewable diffs.
