Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
The dependable pattern is to make SteamCMD (or a Docker entrypoint that calls it) the gate before your Project Zomboid server starts. The updater resolves the configured Workshop items or collections, downloads only changed content, replaces files only after a successful download, and launches the server with a known-good set of mods. Back up Zomboid/Saves/ before changing mods, and keep the numeric Workshop item list aligned with the in-game Mod IDs list; that alignment is what prevents many version-mismatch and missing-mod failures.
What an automated Workshop update actually does
Automation is more than running a download command on a schedule. A safe updater performs a controlled content transaction around the server process:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- It reads the server’s configured Workshop item IDs and, when supported, collection IDs.
- It resolves collections into their current members, commonly through the Steam Web API.
- It obtains the corresponding Workshop files and determines whether each installed copy is missing or changed.
- It downloads a new copy without deleting the known-good copy first.
- It makes the updated content available in the server’s Workshop directory and verifies that the expected Mod IDs can be loaded.
- It starts, or deliberately restarts, the Project Zomboid process only after the update step succeeds.
Valve’s Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the supported command-line route for dedicated-server files: “All Steam game servers now use SteamCMD to download and update game server files.” For Project Zomboid, the dedicated-server application ID documented by the cited Docker workflow is 380870. Use the app ID and branch settings required by your particular deployment rather than copying values from an unrelated game-server image.
Workshop item IDs and Mod IDs are different
Project Zomboid uses two identifiers that look similar in configuration but serve different purposes:

- Workshop item ID: the numeric ID of the Steam Workshop page. It tells the downloader which published item to fetch.
- Mod ID: the identifier declared by the mod and consumed by the server’s
Modssetting. It tells Project Zomboid which mod package to load.
A correct Workshop download can still fail to load if the Mod ID is absent, misspelled, or copied from a different version of the item. Conversely, a correct Mod ID cannot help if its Workshop files were never downloaded. Treat the two lists as a pair: every enabled mod needs the right Workshop content and the matching Mod ID.
Prepare the server and its content declarations
Install or update the dedicated-server files with SteamCMD
Install SteamCMD on the host or inside the server container, then use it as the mechanism that installs and updates the Project Zomboid dedicated-server files. Your deployment may expose a startup script, an entrypoint, or a scheduled job around SteamCMD. Keep that game-file update step separate from the Workshop-content step so that a game build change and a mod change are visible in logs as different operations.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallDecide whether the server follows the current branch or a pinned build branch. A deployment that always follows the current branch minimizes manual maintenance but can introduce a game update at the same time as a mod update. A pinned branch gives you a change window in which to test, but you must deliberately advance the pin. The exact branch names and syntax depend on the server image or script; document the choice next to your deployment configuration.
Declare Workshop items, collections, and Mod IDs
Most containerized workflows expose three settings. Names are shown below exactly as documented in the implementation pattern; the value syntax can vary by image, so follow that image’s delimiter rules.
| Setting | What it contains | How the updater uses it | Common failure |
|---|---|---|---|
WORKSHOP_ITEMS |
Numeric Workshop item IDs | Downloads the individual items and refreshes changed copies. | An ID is omitted, mistyped, or points to an item that was removed or made private. |
WORKSHOP_COLLECTIONS |
Steam Workshop collection IDs, when the deployment supports collections | Expands each collection, often through the Steam Web API, then processes the resulting item IDs. | The collection expansion is stale or an item inside the collection is unavailable. |
MODS |
Project Zomboid Mod IDs, in the server’s expected order and delimiter format | Controls which downloaded packages the game attempts to load. | The Mod ID does not match the value declared by the Workshop item. |
When an updater derives Mod IDs from Workshop descriptions, it relies on the common Mod ID: convention. That is convenient but not infallible: a description can be outdated, omit the field, list several IDs, or use formatting the parser does not understand. Review the resolved Mod IDs in the update log rather than assuming that a successful download means a successful load.

Choose a single source of truth
Keep the item and Mod ID declarations under version control or in a documented deployment file. If an administrator edits one list by hand, update the other in the same change. For collections, record the collection ID and the resulting resolved item set at update time; this makes it possible to identify which newly added or removed member changed the server.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Do not silently mix a manually maintained item list with an automatically expanded collection unless you understand the duplicate-handling behavior of your updater. Duplicates are usually harmless at download time but can make logs and rollback records difficult to interpret.
Pick the update timing that matches your server
There are two practical designs. A startup update is the safer default because no live game process is holding files open. Runtime polling can reduce the time between a Workshop publication and installation, but it is only safe when the deployment can coordinate a clean restart and player communication.
| Decision point | Startup update | Runtime polling |
|---|---|---|
| Update timing | Checks and downloads before each server launch. | Checks while the server is healthy, then schedules a controlled restart when the baseline changes. |
| Files in use | No live process is using the files during replacement. | Requires a stop or restart boundary; replacing files under a running server risks a mixed installation. |
| Rollback | Keep the prior copy until the new download succeeds; a failed check can leave the previous content in place. | Needs the same staged replacement plus a restart decision; otherwise the server may continue running old files while the disk contains new ones. |
| Save protection | Easy to combine with a pre-start save backup. | Requires an explicit backup immediately before the scheduled restart and mod change. |
| Player notification | Players see the maintenance window at the next launch. | Must announce the restart and the possibility that clients need new Workshop files. |
| Collection handling | Expands the collection once per launch, if supported. | Must repeat collection expansion and account for members being added or removed during the polling cycle. |
| Operating systems | Works wherever SteamCMD and the server deployment run, including Linux and Windows arrangements supported by that deployment. | Also depends on a reliable scheduler, process supervisor, and restart mechanism on the chosen operating system. |
| Build branch | Can follow the current branch or a configured pin at launch. | Can encounter game and mod changes independently, so branch pinning and maintenance windows become more important. |
For a small private server, startup updating is normally the least surprising choice. Use polling only if you can stop the server cleanly, back up the save, retain a rollback copy, and notify connected players before they are disconnected.
Implement a safe startup update
The following sequence is portable across a hand-written service, a container entrypoint, or a host scheduler. Adapt the commands to your image and operating system; the important part is the order and the failure behavior.

- Stop the server cleanly. Do not begin replacement while the Java process is writing world data. If the server is already stopped, verify that no orphaned process still has the Workshop directory open.
- Back up the save. Copy the relevant world under
Zomboid/Saves/to storage that is independent of the live directory. Include the server configuration and, if practical, the current item and Mod ID declarations. Label the backup with the maintenance time and the content baseline. - Update the game files. Run the SteamCMD app update for the Project Zomboid dedicated-server application used by your deployment. The cited Docker documentation identifies app ID
380870; confirm that value against your image’s current documentation and branch configuration. - Resolve content. Read
WORKSHOP_ITEMSand, if configured, expandWORKSHOP_COLLECTIONS. Record the final numeric item set before downloading so a later rollback can reproduce the same baseline. - Download changed items to a staging location. Leave each installed item in place while its replacement is being fetched. A network timeout, Steam outage, authentication problem, or unavailable Workshop item must not turn into an empty directory.
- Validate the staged result. Check that each requested item downloaded, that collection members were handled, and that the expected Mod ID information was found. Treat a missing Mod ID as a configuration error to fix before launch, not as a warning to ignore.
- Commit the replacement. After successful validation, move or link the staged files into the server’s Workshop directory using the deployment’s supported layout. Retain the previous item copy until the new baseline has started successfully, or archive it for a defined rollback period.
- Start the server. Launch Project Zomboid with the intended
Modssetting and map configuration. Do not admit players yet; first inspect the startup log. - Confirm health and announce availability. Look for failed downloads, missing Mod IDs, map or configuration errors, and version-mismatch messages. Once the server is healthy, tell players which Workshop content changed and that their clients must finish their own updates.
Illustrative entrypoint logic
An entrypoint should make update failure explicit rather than hiding it in a background process. The following pseudocode shows the control flow, not a drop-in script for a particular image:
read WORKSHOP_ITEMS and WORKSHOP_COLLECTIONS
if WORKSHOP_AUTO_UPDATE is enabled:
resolve collections
download missing or changed items to staging
if any item or Mod ID validation fails:
keep the installed baseline
log the failure
start only if the deployment's policy allows known-good content
else:
atomically activate the staged baseline
backup Zomboid/Saves/
start the Project Zomboid server
Place the save backup immediately before the change that can affect the world. Some operators back up before downloading and again before activation; the second copy is useful when the download takes long enough for an administrator to make an intervening change.
Understand the auto-update switches
WORKSHOP_AUTO_UPDATE=0
In the documented workflow, setting WORKSHOP_AUTO_UPDATE=0 disables Workshop refresh and pins the files already on disk. This is useful during a testing window, after a known-good rollback, or when you need every restart to use exactly the same content. It does not repair an already incomplete installation; it simply prevents the updater from changing it.
When you re-enable updates, expect the next qualifying startup to compare the installed baseline with Steam and download any changed items. Record that transition in your maintenance notes so an unexpected content change is not mistaken for a game-server update.

MOD_AUTO_UPDATE=true may be a separate option
Another Docker implementation documents MOD_AUTO_UPDATE=true as a runtime option. Do not assume it is interchangeable with WORKSHOP_AUTO_UPDATE. One setting may control a startup refresh while the other controls a running service’s mod watcher; their names alone do not establish identical behavior. Read the image’s documentation and test whether it restarts the server, how it handles failed downloads, and whether it performs a save backup.

Make replacement and rollback safe
Keep a known-good copy
The old item should remain available until the new item has downloaded and passed basic validation. A robust implementation stages each item in a temporary directory, verifies that the expected files exist, then switches the active path in one operation. If the host cannot perform an atomic directory switch, stop the server, rename the old directory, move the staged directory into place, and retain the old name for rollback.
Handle Steam or Workshop outages
If Steam is unreachable, a collection cannot be expanded, or one item fails to download, leave the installed copy untouched. The safest policy is to keep the server stopped and report the failure when the update is mandatory. A deployment that explicitly supports fallback may start with the complete known-good baseline, but it must log that the server is running old content so administrators do not mistake a successful process start for a successful update.
Roll back the content and the save together
Rolling back only Workshop files can leave a world that has already saved data from a newer mod version. Restore the matching save backup and the matching item baseline, then start with the same Mod ID list. If you cannot identify a matching pair, stop and make a new backup before attempting recovery; do not repeatedly start the world with alternating mod sets.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Prevent the “Workshop item version is different than the server” error
This message generally means that the client and server are not using the same Workshop revision, or that the server loaded a different package than the one represented by its configuration. Use this diagnostic order:
- Compare the numeric Workshop item IDs. Confirm that the server declaration and the player’s required list refer to the same items, including collection members that may have changed.
- Check the server’s update log. Find the item that failed, was skipped, or remained on an older installed copy. A partial update is enough to create a mismatch.
- Check the Mod ID mapping. Verify that the
Modssetting uses the Mod ID declared by the currently installed Workshop item, not a similarly named folder or an older version’s identifier. - Confirm the restart boundary. If runtime polling downloaded new files without restarting the process, the disk and the running process may represent different baselines. Stop cleanly and launch again.
- Have clients refresh their Workshop content. Players need the same item updates as the server. Ask them to allow Steam to finish downloading before reconnecting; do not solve a client-side download problem by changing the server’s Mod ID list.
- Inspect collection changes. A collection owner can add, remove, or replace an item without changing the collection ID. Compare the resolved collection members with the previous maintenance record.
If the error persists after both sides have refreshed, disable automatic changes temporarily with the deployment’s documented pinning option, restore the last known-good server baseline, and test one content change at a time. This isolates a bad Workshop publication from an identifier or restart problem.

Operate runtime polling without corrupting a live world
Polling is appropriate only when the service can turn a detected change into a planned maintenance event. The watcher should download to staging, report exactly which item changed, and request a restart rather than replacing active files in place.
Required controls
- A health check that distinguishes a responsive server from a process that is merely still running.
- A single-instance lock so two polling cycles cannot update the same item concurrently.
- A drain or announcement step that prevents new players from entering while the save is being backed up.
- A clean shutdown and a backup of
Zomboid/Saves/before activation. - A restart policy that refuses to loop indefinitely when the same item repeatedly fails validation.
- A notification containing the changed Workshop IDs, expected Mod IDs, and the time at which players may reconnect.
Do not poll just to make updates invisible. A visible, scheduled restart with a recoverable save is safer than a process that silently changes dependencies while players are crafting, traveling, or saving.
Validate every update before admitting players
Use a short post-start checklist on every automated run:
- The process reached its normal ready state and did not exit after loading mods.
- The log contains no failed Workshop download or unresolved Mod ID.
- Map and server configuration files load without errors.
- The active item set matches the recorded resolved set, including collection members.
- The save opens successfully and the server can complete a controlled save.
- Clients receive the same Workshop requirements and are not rejected for a version mismatch.
Keep the update log with the save-backup identifier. When a mod author publishes a breaking change, that pairing lets you answer two separate questions: what files were active, and what world state was written with them.
Practical operating checklist
- Keep SteamCMD installed and updated through the server deployment.
- Document the Project Zomboid app ID and whether the server follows a current or pinned branch.
- Maintain
WORKSHOP_ITEMS,WORKSHOP_COLLECTIONS, andMODSas one reviewed change. - Use startup updates unless you have a tested polling-and-restart procedure.
- Set
WORKSHOP_AUTO_UPDATE=0when you need to pin the files already on disk. - Do not assume
MOD_AUTO_UPDATE=truehas the same semantics; verify the implementation that provides it. - Back up
Zomboid/Saves/before a mod change and retain the previous content baseline. - Stage downloads, validate them, then activate them; never delete the only working copy first.
- Read logs for missing Mod IDs, failed downloads, map errors, and version mismatches before opening the server.
- Tell players when content changes and require their clients to finish updating before reconnecting.
With those controls, SteamCMD handles the repetitive retrieval work while your deployment remains responsible for the decisions that matter: when a world may change, which identifiers are authoritative, whether a new baseline is complete, and how to return to the last known-good state.
