You can automate repeatable newsletter tasks with AI and workflow software, but a newsletter is not reliably self-running: a person still needs to verify facts, check the issue, and approve publication. A published example uses Make, Airtable, OpenAI API calls, and Beehiiv to connect parts of the workflow. Its $500-a-month framing is a goal, not evidence of typical or guaranteed income.
What “self-running” can—and cannot—mean
Automation can move information between tools, organize ideas, generate drafts, and prepare a newsletter for review. It does not establish that the content is accurate, useful, legally appropriate, or ready to send. Keep a human approval step between an AI-generated draft and publication.
The specific implementation account describes three Make scenarios, an Airtable base, two OpenAI API calls, and Beehiiv. It is one author’s account, not an independently audited result or a tested template. Read the DEV Community implementation account for the author’s setup; the available evidence does not establish that it runs without supervision.
How to structure the workflow
1. Capture and organize potential stories
Use a consistent source and idea intake process, then store candidate topics and their supporting material in a structured workspace such as the Airtable base in the reported setup. Record where each claim came from so you can check it before publication. Automation can help collect and sort inputs, but a human should decide whether a topic is relevant and whether its evidence is adequate.

2. Generate an outline and draft
Pass selected material to an AI model through an API call to create an outline or first draft. Give the model clear instructions about the reader, desired format, and which supplied facts it may use. Treat its output as editable copy, not a verified article; confirm names, numbers, dates, links, and claims against the original sources.
3. Prepare the issue in the newsletter platform
Use workflow automation to pass approved content into the publishing process. Beehiiv documents an Agent that can assist with drafting, summarizing, planning, personalization, and signup flows. 4. Review and approve before sending
- Check each factual claim against its source and remove unsupported details.
- Review links, formatting, subject line, audience selection, and any sponsor copy.
- Confirm the issue is useful to subscribers and that it is the version you intend to send.
- Send only after a person explicitly approves the final issue.
This checkpoint is the difference between automating parts of production and handing editorial control to an unverified system.
What the $500-a-month target really means
The implementation article presents two sponsors per month as a baseline income source, but that is the author’s framing—not proof of $500 in dependable monthly revenue or profit. The account does not establish representative earnings, sponsorship demand, or a controlled result. No independent earnings evidence is established here, so treat $500 as a target to test rather than a forecast.

Track money actually received separately from costs such as platform plans, automation, AI usage, and time spent producing and reviewing issues. The cited account does not establish those costs. Audience size and engagement, niche, sponsor fit and demand, and the offer you sell can all affect whether revenue materializes; a gross revenue figure also does not equal profit.
Choose a monetization route that fits the publication
Beehiiv identifies several monetization options. Availability of a feature does not guarantee eligibility, placement, reader conversion, or earnings.
