Playing with friends? Godlike.Host runs hosted Hytale servers from 10 data-center locations, with free DDoS protection.
Hytale includes native automatic world backups. Enable the backup feature in the server configuration or at launch, choose a backup directory separate from the live server data when possible, set a frequency and retention policy, and use /backup before updates or other risky maintenance. A restore should be performed only after the Java server process is stopped.
This guide explains how to configure the native system, plan retention, run it in Docker, store archives on another disk or synchronized folder, verify that backups are usable, and restore a Hytale universe/ directory safely.
What Hytale backs up and why the directory matters
Hytale’s native feature is designed for automatic world backups. The active world and player data live in the server’s universe/ directory. A backup archive is a point-in-time copy of that data, written to the backup directory configured for the server.
The backup directory is not necessarily the same place as the live server files. Its exact default, if any, can vary by release and installation method, so do not assume a universal path. Treat the configured directory as the authoritative location and confirm it on the machine running your server.

Keeping archives on the same disk as the live server is convenient and fast, but a failed disk, accidental deletion, filesystem corruption, or a compromised host can affect both copies. A separate internal volume, external SSD, or host-mounted storage gives better local resilience. A cloud-synchronized folder can add an off-host copy, but synchronization alone is not the same as an independent backup account with its own retention and recovery controls.
Before you configure anything
Find the active server root
- Stop or identify the Hytale Java process without deleting or moving files.
- Locate the directory from which the server is launched, or the persistent data directory supplied by your service or container.
- Confirm that the expected
universe/folder is beneath that root. It should contain the world and player data you intend to protect. - Check the account running the server. It must be able to create directories and write archive files in the selected backup location.
Check release-specific help
Hytale’s API identifies a BackupConfig for automatic world backups and an asynchronous BackupCommand. Command-line options override configuration values. Because flags and defaults can change between releases, inspect the help output from the exact server build you run, such as the help text exposed by your installed HytaleServer.jar, before copying a production command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesPrepare storage
- Estimate how quickly your world changes and how much space one archive consumes.
- Choose a destination with enough headroom for the configured recent and archived backup counts.
- If using an external disk, mount it before starting the server and use a stable path rather than a desktop shortcut.
- If using synchronized storage, ensure the synchronization client runs under an account that can read the backup directory and that files are not being modified while an archive is written.
Enable native automatic backups
Launch options
A current Hytale backup guide documents these launch options:
| Option | Purpose | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
--backup |
Enables the backup feature. | Use the spelling and behavior shown by the installed release’s help output. |
--backup-directory <Path> |
Selects where backup archives are written. | Use an absolute path when practical, especially for external or host-mounted storage. |
--backup-frequency <Integer> |
Sets the automatic backup interval. | The integer’s unit and accepted range should be confirmed for your server release; do not infer a default. |
Place the options in the same launch mechanism you already use for Hytale. For example, a service unit, startup script, control-panel field, or container entrypoint can carry the options. Do not add a second competing configuration until you know which source wins: command-line values take precedence over configuration values.
Configuration file
The official configuration model calls the feature BackupConfig. A community save-format reference shows a config.json object with these fields:

"Backup": {
"Enabled": true,
"FrequencyMinutes": 30,
"Directory": "/srv/hytale-backups",
"MaxCount": 24,
"ArchiveMaxCount": 12
}
}
The field names and their meanings are implementation details and therefore version-sensitive. Enabled controls whether automatic backups run; FrequencyMinutes expresses an interval in minutes in versions that expose that field; Directory identifies the destination; MaxCount and ArchiveMaxCount represent recent and archived retention limits where supported. Validate the schema against the configuration generated by your installed release rather than pasting this object blindly.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →If you specify both the file and launch options, expect the launch options to win. This is useful for a temporary maintenance override, but it can also make an edit to config.json appear ineffective. Record the final effective values in your deployment notes.
Choose a frequency and retention policy
There is no single safe interval for every server. The right setting balances rollback coverage, write load, and storage. Start with how much progress players could reasonably lose and how much storage your destination can hold.
| Server pattern | Practical starting approach | Why you might change it |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional private world | A relatively long interval and a modest recent count. | Reduce the interval before a building session or other high-change period. |
| Regular small community | A shorter interval that limits the amount of progress lost after a failure, plus several days of recent archives. | Increase retention when players are active for long sessions or when rollback investigations are common. |
| Busy public server | Frequent automatic archives, a larger recent count, and a separate archived tier. | Watch disk growth and archive duration; move copies off-host if the server is important. |
The table gives planning patterns, not Hytale defaults. Measure your own archive sizes and creation times. A simple capacity estimate is:
required space ≈ average archive size × (recent retention + archived retention) + safety headroom

Use headroom for temporary files, filesystem overhead, and growth as the universe expands. If archives are compressed differently across releases, measure several real archives instead of extrapolating from one small world.
Recent versus archived retention
The API index distinguishes a recent-backup count and an archived-backup count. The community configuration names them MaxCount and ArchiveMaxCount. The practical reason to keep both is to preserve dense short-term rollback points while retaining a smaller number of older milestones. Exact promotion and deletion behavior can change with the server version, so inspect the files produced by your build and keep more capacity than the nominal counts require.
Protect against a full destination
- Monitor free space on the backup volume, not only the live server disk.
- Choose a retention count that still leaves room for a new archive when the destination is nearly full.
- Alert when archive creation fails or when the destination becomes unavailable after a drive disconnect.
- Do not treat a successful server start as proof that the latest backup succeeded; verify the archive directory separately.
Use /backup before risky changes
Automatic scheduling should be supplemented with an explicit archive immediately before an operation that could damage or invalidate the world. Hytale documents the /backup command for an immediate archive.
- Announce a short maintenance window if players are online.
- Run
/backupfrom the server console or an authorized in-game context. - Wait for the command to report completion, then confirm that a new archive appears in the configured backup directory.
- Record the archive’s timestamp or filename in your maintenance notes.
- Apply the update, plugin or mod change, migration, or other operation.
Use this trigger before Hytale updates, plugin changes, migrations, world edits, or changes to startup configuration. An on-demand archive gives you a known rollback point even when the scheduled interval has not elapsed.

Docker: persist the data and configure the environment
A Docker image documented for Hytale exposes ENABLE_BACKUP, BACKUP_FREQUENCY, and BACKUP_DIR. It mounts persistent server data at /data. The important distinction is between the container’s writable layer and durable host storage: deleting and recreating a container must not delete the live universe or the backup archives.

Container deployment checklist
- Bind-mount a durable host directory to the image’s
/datapath. - Set
ENABLE_BACKUPaccording to the image documentation. - Set
BACKUP_FREQUENCYusing the unit and syntax expected by that image version. - Set
BACKUP_DIRto a directory under a durable mount. If you want the archives outside the live data tree, bind-mount a second host directory and point the variable there. - Confirm container-user permissions on both the live data mount and backup mount.
- Recreate the container and verify that the same
universe/data and backup archives are visible afterward.
Environment-variable names are image-specific implementation details. If they conflict with native Hytale launch options, follow the image’s documented precedence and inspect the resulting startup command or logs. Keep the host backup directory separate from ephemeral container storage.
External drives and cloud-synchronized folders
External SSD or USB hard drive
An external SSD is a practical local target because it can provide fast writes and physical separation from the server’s main disk. Format and mount it using a filesystem your host supports reliably, give the server account write permission, and use a stable mount path. Avoid unplugging the drive while an archive is being created. If the drive is removed, automatic backups can fail even though the Hytale process continues running.
Physical separation protects against a single internal-disk failure, but it does not protect against theft, fire, or accidental deletion that reaches both disks. Periodically copy selected archives to another location and test that they can be read.
Cloud-synchronized directory
Pointing the backup directory at a folder watched by a synchronization client can provide an off-host copy without changing Hytale’s backup mechanism. Synchronization is asynchronous: the local archive must finish before the client can upload it, and a network outage can leave the off-host copy behind. Keep enough local retention to cover the time needed for synchronization.
- Use a dedicated folder rather than mixing archives with unrelated files.
- Check that the client preserves large files and does not rename partially uploaded files in a way that confuses your restore process.
- Confirm the service’s own version history or deletion protection if you need recovery from accidental removal.
- Do not restore directly from a file that is still syncing; wait until the upload is complete.
Restore a Hytale universe backup safely
Restoration replaces the active universe/ directory. The documented procedure requires stopping the server before replacing that directory. Never overwrite a live universe while the Java process is writing files.
Best Value
- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Tell players that the server will be offline and note the target archive’s timestamp.
- Stop the Hytale Java server cleanly. Confirm that the process has exited and that no child process is still holding files open.
- Make a safety copy by renaming the current directory, for example from
universetouniverse-before-restore. Renaming preserves a fallback if you selected the wrong archive. - Extract the selected backup archive using an archive tool that preserves its directory structure.
- Place the restored
universe/directory at the server root, beside the configuration and launch files expected by that installation. Do not create an extra nested path such asuniverse/universe. - Check ownership and permissions so the normal server account can read and write the restored files.
- Start the server and watch the console for load errors, missing data, or permission failures.
- Join with an administrator account and verify the world, player inventories, permissions, and any recently changed areas.
- Keep the renamed pre-restore directory until verification is complete and players confirm that the expected state has returned.
If the server fails to start, stop it again, preserve the logs, and restore the pre-restore directory rather than repeatedly editing files in place. A failed test is evidence that the selected archive, extraction path, permissions, or server-version compatibility needs investigation.
Run a restore drill before you need one
A backup that has never been restored is an unverified assumption. Use a disposable local instance or an isolated test host for a drill.
- Copy one archive without modifying the original.
- Stop the test server and replace its test
universe/with the extracted copy. - Start the test instance with a different port or network restriction so it cannot compete with production.
- Check several worlds, player records, inventories, permissions, and recent builds.
- Measure how long the complete process takes and write down the exact extraction and ownership commands used by your operating system.
Repeat the drill after a Hytale release change, a container-image change, or a change to the archive format. The community configuration fields and Docker variables are implementation references, not guarantees that every release stores archives identically.
Automation, manual archives, and storage choices compared
| Approach | Strength | Trade-off | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Native scheduled backups | Runs without an operator remembering each archive. | Can fail silently if the destination fills, unmounts, or loses permission. | Baseline protection for every server. |
/backup trigger |
Creates a known point immediately before maintenance. | Depends on an operator or maintenance script invoking it. | Updates, plugin changes, migrations, and world edits. |
| Same-disk directory | Fast and simple to restore. | Shares failure and deletion risk with the live server. | Short-term rollback when another copy exists. |
| Separate local disk | Protects against failure of the primary disk and is usually quick to restore. | Still vulnerable to host-wide incidents and physical loss. | Primary local archive destination. |
| Cloud-synchronized folder | Adds an off-host copy using the native archive output. | Upload delay, network dependence, and provider retention behavior require monitoring. | Secondary copy for disaster recovery. |
| Docker environment variables | Convenient for repeatable container deployments. | Image-specific names and mounts must be preserved during recreation. | Containerized servers with durable host volumes. |
Troubleshoot missing or unusable backups
No archive appears
- Confirm that backups are enabled in the effective configuration, not only in a file overridden by launch options.
- Check the server log for the resolved backup directory and permission errors.
- Verify that the interval value uses the unit expected by your release or Docker image.
- Check whether an external volume is mounted and writable by the server account.
- Run
/backupmanually and inspect the destination immediately afterward.
The wrong directory is being used
Compare the startup command, configuration file, and container environment. A relative path may resolve from a different working directory than you expect. Use an absolute path and restart after changing it. In Docker, inspect the container mount and the host path rather than checking only the container’s temporary filesystem.
Archives consume too much space
- Measure real archive sizes and reduce retention only after deciding how much rollback history is acceptable.
- Keep a smaller archived tier while retaining denser recent points.
- Move older archives to separate durable storage instead of deleting every historical copy.
- Ensure cleanup does not remove the newest known-good archive before a maintenance operation is verified.
Restore starts but data looks old or incomplete
Confirm the archive timestamp and that extraction produced exactly one server-root universe/ directory. Check whether the archive was still syncing when copied, whether the server was stopped during the original archive operation, and whether you restored to the same release or a compatible release. Keep the original pre-restore directory until the investigation is finished.
