The safest way to automate OpenClaw configuration is to treat ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json as a managed state file and make changes through the OpenClaw CLI rather than editing JSON5 text directly. Read the current value with openclaw config get, validate a proposed value with openclaw config set ... --strict-json --dry-run, apply it without --dry-run, and read the value again. Use config unset for removals and --batch-file or config patch for grouped changes. Back up the file first, never use a symlink for the active path, and run openclaw doctor after upgrades before deciding whether repairs are needed.
How OpenClaw stores configuration
OpenClaw’s main configuration file is a JSON5 document at ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json. JSON5 is JSON with conveniences such as comments and, depending on the parser, trailing commas. If the file does not exist, OpenClaw falls back to safe defaults. That fallback is useful for a new installation, but an automation job should distinguish between an intentionally absent setting and a failed write.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Set OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH when the configuration is stored somewhere other than the default state directory. Every command in an automated job should inherit the same value of that variable; otherwise one step can read the default file while another writes a different file.
OpenClaw-owned writes are atomic: the program prepares a replacement and swaps it into place. This protects readers from seeing a partially written document, but it also means the active file must not be a symlink. With a symlinked openclaw.json, the replacement operation can replace the symlink target path itself instead of writing through the link. Keep the real file at the path OpenClaw owns and manage backups or copies separately.

Prepare an automation job before changing a key
Identify the exact field
Do not guess a path from a similar product or an old example. OpenClaw’s configuration reference directs agents and scripts to config.schema.lookup for field-level documentation. Use that lookup, or the equivalent command and help text in your installed version, to confirm the path, value type, allowed values, and whether the setting is deprecated.
Dot paths address nested objects. For example, openclaw config get gateway.port reads the gateway port. Array members use bracket notation such as agents.list[0].id. Bracket syntax is documented in community guides, so verify it with openclaw config --help on the version you will automate before relying on it in production.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Resolve the file path and reject symlinks
A shell job can calculate the same path OpenClaw will use:
config=${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}
Before writing, check that the path is not a symbolic link. If it is, stop and migrate to a real file path first. Also check that the parent directory is writable by the account running OpenClaw. A missing file is not automatically an error because safe defaults are supported, but a missing parent directory or an unwritable state directory will prevent a write.
Make your own backup
Take a timestamped copy before the first write in a job. Do not rely only on a later repair command to create a backup; the repair behavior is version-dependent and is intended for health remediation, not as your transaction log. Keep the backup outside any location your deployment process might overwrite.

Automate one setting with a validated two-pass write
For an individual setting, use a read, dry run, real write, and read-back sequence. The example changes the gateway port; substitute a path and value that your schema lookup confirms.

- Read the current value. Run
openclaw config get gateway.portand record the output in your job log. Treat a “not set” response as a distinct state rather than silently converting it to zero or an empty string. - Validate without writing. Run
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json --dry-run. The command should parse the value and perform the schema checks associated with strict JSON mode while leavingopenclaw.jsonunchanged. - Apply the same command without the preview flag. Run
openclaw config set gateway.port 18789 --strict-json. Keep the exact value and path identical to the dry run; changing either between passes defeats the validation. - Read back the result. Run
openclaw config get gateway.portagain and compare it with the intended value. A successful process exit is not enough evidence if another job can modify the same file. - Reload only when required. Some settings are consumed when the Gateway starts, while others can be observed on a subsequent operation. The available documentation does not map every key to a restart requirement, so consult the field’s documentation and your deployment procedure before restarting or reloading the Gateway.
For string values, strict JSON mode requires a JSON string token, not an unquoted shell word. For example, a value represented as local in JSON must be passed as a quoted JSON token such as '"local"' to the shell. Numbers, booleans, arrays, and objects must likewise be valid JSON representations. Test unusual values in a disposable state directory before putting them into a deployment pipeline.
Understand dry runs and strict JSON
--dry-run is available for config set, config patch, and config unset. It previews the operation without writing openclaw.json. There is an important validation distinction:
| Operation | What it does | Validation caution |
|---|---|---|
config set path value --dry-run |
Previews a single assignment. | In value mode, without --strict-json, the full schema check is skipped; a dry run can therefore accept a value that the real write rejects. |
config set path value --strict-json --dry-run |
Previews an assignment while parsing the value as strict JSON. | Use this for automated numbers, booleans, strings, arrays, and objects when the field schema permits them. |
config patch --file file --dry-run |
Previews a file-based group of changes. | Use the patch-file format and options documented by the installed CLI; do not assume a format from another release. |
config unset path --dry-run |
Previews removal of a key. | Confirm that the application’s default behavior after removal is acceptable. |
Do not treat a value-mode dry run without --strict-json as a complete test. For file-based patches, the command’s own parser and schema handling are the authority, so pin the OpenClaw version used by your automation and test the patch file against that version.
Remove keys safely with config unset
Use openclaw config unset <path> instead of assigning an empty string or null when the goal is to remove a setting. Preview it first:

Read the path afterward. If the path is inside an array, removing a member can change indexes, so a later command that addresses agents.list[1] may refer to a different object. For repeatable jobs, identify array entries by a stable field where the installed CLI supports that workflow, or read the array and construct the change from the current document rather than assuming fixed indexes.
Apply several changes as one automation unit
Batch files
The CLI supports --batch-file <file> for grouped config set operations. Batch files are capped at 8 MiB. Build the file in a temporary location, validate it with a dry run, and only then apply it:
Rank #3
- CanaKit Raspberry Pi 5 Essentials Starter Kit
openclaw config set --batch-file ./openclaw-changes.batch --dry-run
openclaw config set --batch-file ./openclaw-changes.batch
The exact record syntax is version-specific. Generate the file according to openclaw config set --help from the same OpenClaw installation that will consume it. Keep the file under the size limit and delete temporary copies if they contain credentials or tokens.
Patch files
For a change set that includes additions, replacements, and removals, use config patch --file <path> with a dry run first:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteopenclaw config patch --file ./openclaw.patch --dry-run
openclaw config patch --file ./openclaw.patch
Because command behavior documentation does not establish a single patch document format across releases, do not hard-code an assumed format into a portable installer. Pin the CLI version, inspect its help output, and keep a fixture that proves the patch produces the intended result in a temporary configuration directory.
A shell workflow that is repeatable and auditable
The following pattern is suitable for a single key. It records the prior value, refuses symlinks, creates a backup, validates the assignment, writes it, and verifies the result. It intentionally exits on errors so a failed validation cannot be mistaken for a successful deployment.
#!/usr/bin/env bash
set -euo pipefail
config=${OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH:-$HOME/.openclaw/openclaw.json}
path='gateway.port'
value='18789'
if [ -L "$config" ]; then
echo "The active config is a symlink: $config" &>2
exit 1
fi
before='(not set)'
if current=$(openclaw config get "$path" 2>/dev/null); then
before=$current
fi
printf 'Before: %s=%sn' "$path" "$before"
if [ -e "$config" ]; then
stamp=$(date -u +%Y%m%dT%H%M%SZ)
cp -- "$config" "$config.bak.$stamp"
fi
openclaw config set "$path" "$value" --strict-json --dry-run
openclaw config set "$path" "$value" --strict-json
after=$(openclaw config get "$path")
printf 'After: %s=%sn' "$path" "$after"
if [ "$after" != "$value" ]; then
echo "Verification failed" &>2
exit 1
fi
This script is deliberately conservative. In a production pipeline, send command output to a protected log, mask secrets, and make the expected value an input that has already passed your own policy checks. Do not put API keys directly in a batch file or shell history when an environment-specific secret mechanism is available.
Make automation portable across machines
Use the configuration-path variable consistently
Set OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH in the service environment, the interactive troubleshooting shell, and the automation runner. A common failure is validating one file and restarting a service that reads another. Log the resolved path (without exposing secret values) at the start of each job.

Pin and inspect the installed CLI
Command flags and doctor checks can differ between releases. Run openclaw config --help and openclaw doctor --help on the target installation during deployment validation. Do not copy a flag from an unrelated guide without checking that it exists in the installed binary.
Serialize writers
Atomic replacement prevents a half-written file, but it does not merge two simultaneous edits. If two jobs read the same old value and then write different documents, the later replacement can overwrite the earlier one. Use your CI or service scheduler to allow one writer at a time, or add an external lock around the read–validate–write–verify sequence. Keep each transaction small and re-read immediately after applying it.
Check and repair configuration after upgrades
openclaw doctor is the read-only health check. Run it after an upgrade before applying repairs so you can review the findings without modifying the file.
openclaw doctor --fix applies repairs; --repair is an alias, and --yes skips interactive prompts where supported. Third-party documentation reports that a fix operation writes a backup at ~/.openclaw/openclaw.json.bak and removes unknown configuration keys while listing each removal. Because that behavior is not guaranteed for every release, make your own timestamped backup and read the command’s output before accepting a repair.
Recommended Free Tools
Guides disagree about additional options such as --deep, --non-interactive, --check, and --list-checks. Treat those flags as optional until openclaw doctor --help on your installation confirms them. Likewise, do not assume openclaw doctor --fix --dry-run exists: it is described as a suggestion in one guide and is absent from official CLI examples.
Plan for upgrade migrations
The built-in updater performs configuration migrations and restarts the Gateway according to the available release documentation. A third-party changelog describes a dry-run preview for upgrades, but that option is not established by the official material; verify it before placing it in a script.

Official v2026.9.5 notes report improved configuration backups. They also state that installations managed by a package manager must be updated through that package manager. Do not mix a self-updater command with a package-managed installation.
A 2026 changelog guide reports one case in which running openclaw doctor --fix after an upgrade was needed after an xAI plugin configuration relocation, with web search otherwise failing silently. That account is not confirmed by the release notes, so use it as a troubleshooting lead rather than a universal upgrade step: run the read-only doctor check, inspect the reported migration issue, and apply repairs only when the installed version identifies a problem.
Common failure modes and recovery paths
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The dry run passes but the real write fails. | The command used value mode without --strict-json, so full schema validation was skipped. |
Repeat the preview with --strict-json, correct the value type or allowed value, then apply the same command. |
| The command changes a file, but OpenClaw still uses the old setting. | The service and shell resolve different paths, or the key is read only at Gateway startup. | Print OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATH in both environments, read the key through the service account, and follow the field-specific reload or restart guidance. |
| A symlink disappears or its target is replaced. | OpenClaw atomically replaced the configured path instead of writing through the link. | Restore the backup, move the real file to the configured path, and use separate backup copies rather than a symlink layout. |
| An array edit affects the wrong agent. | Indexes changed after an earlier insertion or removal. | Read the current array, identify the intended object, and apply one verified change at a time. |
doctor --fix removes settings. |
The doctor identified unknown keys, which may be obsolete or may belong to a plugin not installed in this version. | Review the removal list, restore from your backup if necessary, confirm the plugin and schema version, then reapply only documented keys. |
| A doctor option is rejected. | The option came from a guide for another release. | Run openclaw doctor --help and use only flags exposed by the installed binary. |
| A batch job exceeds the input limit. | The batch file is larger than the supported 8 MiB maximum. | Split the change set into ordered, independently validated batches or use a patch workflow supported by your version. |
Security and change-control practices
- Keep configuration backups access-controlled. They can contain credentials, endpoint URLs, or private integration settings.
- Never print secret-bearing paths with unrestricted command tracing. Disable shell tracing around commands that include sensitive values.
- Validate values against an allowlist before invoking OpenClaw. Strict JSON checks syntax and schema compatibility; it does not decide whether a value is safe for your environment.
- Record the operator, timestamp, resolved configuration path, changed path, and verification result. Do not record secret values.
- Use a disposable or staging state directory to test a new batch or patch before production. Set
OPENCLAW_CONFIG_PATHexplicitly so the test cannot touch the default file. - Keep configuration changes idempotent. Setting a desired port repeatedly is usually safer than applying a relative transformation whose result depends on what a previous run did.
- After a failed write, stop and inspect the file and backup before retrying. Repeated blind retries can hide a schema migration or permission problem.
When direct file editing is still appropriate
Direct editing can be useful for an initial bootstrap or a recovery performed while the CLI is unavailable, but it should be the exception for automation. A text replacement script can break JSON5 syntax, remove comments, alter an array index, or write a partially valid document. If you must edit manually, stop OpenClaw if your deployment requires it, make a backup, validate the resulting file with the installed CLI, and run openclaw doctor before bringing the Gateway back into service.
The interactive openclaw configure command is another option for a human-led setup. It is not a substitute for a deterministic pipeline: prompts can change, require a terminal, and make it harder to review exactly which paths were changed. Use the config subcommands for unattended work.
A practical decision guide
- One known value: use
config get, strict-JSON dry run, strict-JSON set, and read-back verification. - One removal: use
config unsetwith--dry-run, then apply and verify the absence. - Several independent assignments: use a batch file, keep it under 8 MiB, dry-run it, then apply it once.
- Mixed additions, replacements, and removals: use the version-specific patch-file workflow and test the file in a disposable state directory.
- After an upgrade: run read-only
openclaw doctor, review findings, then usedoctor --fixonly with a fresh backup and confirmed flags. - Any job using a symlink or two concurrent writers: redesign it before automating; atomic writes do not make symlink layouts or competing transactions safe.
This approach gives every automated change a clear before state, a validation point, an atomic application, and an observable after state while leaving OpenClaw’s own schema and migration logic in control of the file.
