Godlike.Host offers hosted V Rising servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
There is no universal, headless “update all” command for a V Rising dedicated server. The reliable approach is to maintain a named Thunderstore profile containing the server’s exact package versions, update that profile while the server is stopped, back up the BepInEx tree and saves, deploy only server-compatible files, then restart and check the logs. For unattended operation, place those same steps behind a scheduler such as systemd timers, Windows Task Scheduler, a Docker entrypoint, or a hosting-panel task.
What “auto-update” means for V Rising mods
People use “auto-update” to describe two different jobs. The first is desktop maintenance: a mod manager checks a profile, identifies outdated Thunderstore packages, and downloads newer versions. The second is server automation: an unattended job stops a dedicated server, creates a rollback copy, updates approved packages, copies them into the server’s BepInEx installation, and starts the server again.

r2modman is designed for the first job. It can browse Thunderstore packages, install them, update them, and manage several profiles. Its documented update workflow should not be treated as a guaranteed, headless V Rising server daemon. A dedicated server still needs a deployment process that understands when the process is stopped, where its BepInEx files live, how saves are protected, and how to recover from an incompatible package.
The safest design is therefore profile-driven deployment: use r2modman or an equivalent Thunderstore workflow to produce a known-good package set, and let your scheduler run the backup, stop, copy, start, and verification stages in that order.

Filter packages for the correct side of the game
Thunderstore’s V Rising catalog separates packages into Client, Server, and Tools categories. Use those tags as the first compatibility filter before you automate anything. A package marked client-only belongs in each player’s client profile, not in the dedicated server’s BepInEx tree. Packages marked server or both client and server are candidates for server deployment, subject to their dependencies and compatibility with your current V Rising build.
- Server: intended to run on the dedicated server. Add it to the server profile after checking dependencies.
- Client: intended for a player’s game installation. Do not copy it to the server simply because it appears in the same Thunderstore catalog.
- Client and server: may need matching versions on both sides. Record the exact version rather than allowing clients and the server to drift independently.
- Tools: utility packages may support administration or packaging but are not automatically server plugins.
When a package page lists dependencies, treat the dependency graph as part of the update. Updating one plugin while leaving an incompatible dependency behind can produce loader errors even when the plugin itself downloaded successfully.

Prepare separate, named profiles
Create a server profile
Create a dedicated profile with a name that identifies its purpose, such as “V Rising Dedicated Server.” Keep only the packages that are allowed to run on the server and record the version of every package. A named profile gives you a reproducible manifest: you can see what changed, restore the previous set, and give an automation job a defined source instead of an ambiguous “latest everything” folder.
Do not use a general-purpose play profile as the deployment source. Personal client mods, testing packages, and experimental versions make it harder to determine which files belong on the server.
Create a client profile when players need client components
Players may need a separate client profile for user-interface, visual, or other client-side packages. If a package is required on both sides, keep the same package version in both profiles. Distribute the profile’s package names and versions to players rather than asking them to install whatever is newest at the moment they connect.
Account for the first BepInEx start
BepInEx can take time to generate its files on the first server boot. A freshly installed or restored server may therefore appear idle longer than usual before the normal plugin directories and configuration files exist. Allow that initialization to finish, then inspect the log before treating the deployment as successful. If you are enabling server mods in a client installation for testing, the V Rising installation guidance references ServerLaunchFix for that purpose; it does not turn a client profile into a production dedicated-server deployment.

Back up before changing a working server
Stop the server before taking the deployment copy. Your rollback set should include three things:
- The complete BepInEx directory, including plugin binaries and configuration files.
- The server’s save data and any other world-state files.
- A plain record of the package names, versions, and dependency changes in the profile being deployed.
Give the copy a date and a meaningful label, such as the previous game build and profile revision. Keep it separate from the live directory so that a generic “copy updated files” operation cannot overwrite your only recovery point. Retain the rollback set until the updated server has completed at least one successful player session.
A newly published mod can be incompatible with the V Rising build you are running. A backup is what lets you test an update without turning a failed experiment into permanent save or configuration loss.
Manual update procedure you can later automate
Run this sequence whenever you update the server profile. The same order should be preserved by a scheduled job.
Recommended Free Tools
- Announce a maintenance window. Tell players when the server will stop and that clients may need a matching profile update.
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Wait for the process to exit and for the host to release its files. Never replace plugin files while the server is still writing them.
- Make the dated rollback copy. Back up BepInEx, configuration, saves, and the current package manifest before downloading or copying anything new.
- Review the profile. In r2modman, inspect outdated packages and dependency changes. Approve only packages tagged for the server or for both client and server. Leave client-only packages out of the server profile.
- Update the profile. Download the selected versions and verify that the profile resolves its dependencies. If the manager reports a conflict, do not deploy a partial set; resolve or defer the update.
- Deploy to the server’s BepInEx tree. Use the host’s supported file-transfer method to copy the resulting plugin and configuration files. Copy the contents required by the profile, not the profile-management directory itself.
- Protect the save directory. Confirm that the transfer did not target the world saves. A mod profile is not a substitute for save data, and replacing saves with profile files can destroy the world state.
- Start the server. Allow BepInEx enough time to generate or validate its files, especially after a clean install or rollback.
- Read the startup log. Look for loader failures, missing dependencies, duplicate plugins, version conflicts, and exceptions during initialization. Do not reopen the server to players merely because the process is running.
- Perform a controlled connection test. Join with a client using the matching profile, exercise the features affected by the update, and watch for errors. Keep the rollback copy until this session succeeds.
If any verification step fails, stop the server, restore the previous BepInEx and configuration copy, and restart before attempting a different package set. Preserve the failed update’s log so you can identify the package or dependency that caused the problem.
Turn the sequence into an unattended job
A scheduler can run the workflow, but it cannot decide whether a newly published package is actually compatible. Keep an approval boundary: either pin versions in the profile or require a human to approve the profile revision before the job deploys it.

Whether you use a systemd timer, Windows Task Scheduler, a Docker entrypoint, or a hosting-panel task, implement these controls:
- Single-instance locking: prevent a second update job from starting while the first is still stopping, copying, or starting the server.
- Clean-stop check: wait for the server process to exit and fail the job if it remains active. Do not proceed to file replacement on a timeout.
- Dated backups: create the BepInEx, configuration, save, and manifest copy before modifying the live tree.
- Allowlisted deployment: copy only the files produced by the approved server profile. Do not mirror an entire client installation.
- Dependency and compatibility gate: abort when the profile has unresolved dependencies or when the operator has marked the current V Rising build as unsupported.
- Startup timeout and health check: give BepInEx time to initialize, then inspect logs and a server-health signal before declaring success.
- Failure handling: leave the server stopped or restore the last known-good copy according to your recovery policy; never silently continue after a failed deployment.
- Retention and notification: keep several dated rollback sets and send the job result, log location, and deployed profile revision to the operator.
The exact command, file path, service name, and restart syntax depend on your operating system, container image, or hosting panel. There is no platform-neutral V Rising updater command established for this workflow, so adapt the sequence to the controls your platform actually exposes.
Deploy files without damaging the installation
Use the host’s normal transfer mechanism—such as its file manager, secure copy process, mounted volume, or container volume—to place the approved files in the server’s BepInEx tree. The destination should be the live server installation, not the profile cache used by the desktop manager.
Prefer a staged transfer when your host supports it: copy the new files to a temporary location, verify that the expected package set is complete, and then replace the live plugin/configuration set while the server is stopped. This reduces the chance of leaving half of an update in place after an interrupted transfer.
Do not delete configuration files merely because a package update did not include a replacement. Some mods store administrator settings there. If a package documents a migration requirement, follow it explicitly and include the resulting configuration in the rollback copy.
Keep clients and the server in sync
A server update can break clients even when the server starts normally. The common causes are a different package version, a missing dependency, or a client-only component that was updated independently. Publish the matching profile revision to players whenever a package is required on both sides.

- Lightweight, Classic fit, Double-needle sleeve and bottom hem
- State the server profile name and exact package versions.
- Identify packages that are server-only so players do not install them unnecessarily.
- Identify packages that are client-only so administrators do not copy them to the server.
- Tell players to update before reconnecting after a maintenance window.
- If a player cannot connect, compare the package and dependency lists before changing server files again.
Do not solve a client mismatch by blindly updating the server a second time. Compare manifests first; otherwise both sides can drift farther from the last known-good combination.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Handle V Rising game patches conservatively
A V Rising patch can invalidate a previously working BepInEx and mod combination. Pause automatic deployment after a game update until the loader and critical server packages are confirmed compatible with the new build. This is particularly important for jobs configured to install the newest package versions without an approval step.
During the pause, keep the server on the last known-good profile if the game build still supports it, or leave the server offline if the loader cannot start safely. Check package release notes and startup logs, then create a new dated profile revision once compatibility is established. Resume the scheduler only after that revision has passed a controlled connection test.

Diagnose common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Recovery |
|---|---|---|
| The server starts but a plugin is absent. | The package was client-only, copied to the wrong directory, or omitted from the allowlisted deployment. | Check the package category and profile manifest, stop the server, deploy the approved server package, and review the startup log. |
| BepInEx reports a missing dependency. | An update changed the dependency graph or only part of the profile was copied. | Restore the last known-good set or resolve the dependency in the profile, then redeploy the complete set rather than one DLL. |
| Players are rejected after an update. | Client and server versions or dependencies differ. | Compare both manifests and distribute the matching client profile; do not add client-only files to the server. |
| The updater starts while the server is still running. | The scheduler lacks a process check, stop timeout, or single-instance lock. | Disable the job, stop the server cleanly, restore the pre-update copy if files were replaced, and add those guards before re-enabling it. |
| The first start appears to hang. | BepInEx is generating or validating files after a clean install or restore. | Allow the documented initialization time, then inspect logs. Treat repeated loader errors—not a short quiet period—as the failure signal. |
| The world is missing or reset. | A profile directory or plugin copy overwrote save data, or the wrong backup was restored. | Stop immediately and restore the dated save backup. Separate save paths from mod deployment in the job configuration. |
| The server fails after a V Rising patch. | The loader or a critical mod is not compatible with the new game build. | Pause automation and roll back to the last compatible profile and game state, then wait for confirmed compatibility before testing again. |
Choose an operating model
| Approach | Version and rollback control | Scheduled jobs | Logs | Downtime | Operator effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Manual profile and copy | Highest visibility; easy to pin a profile and keep dated copies. | None unless you add a separate scheduler. | You inspect the host directly. | Planned stop and restart for each update. | Best for administrators comfortable with file transfer and log review. |
| Scripted self-hosted deployment | Strong control when the script uses pinned profiles, backups, and an allowlist. | Yes, through systemd timers, Windows Task Scheduler, Docker entrypoints, or equivalent tooling. | Requires you to collect, retain, and alert on logs. | Can be consistent and predictable, but every update still needs a stop/start window. | Requires maintenance of the host, script, locks, failure paths, and storage. |
| Managed hosting | Depends on the provider’s profile pinning, backup retention, and restore controls. | Useful when the panel exposes scheduled tasks and restart controls. | Usually available through a panel, but retention and export options vary. | Still present during restart; the panel may make timing easier to communicate. | Lower host-maintenance burden, in exchange for less control over the underlying system. |
Choose manual maintenance when updates are infrequent and you want every change reviewed. Choose a scripted deployment when you can maintain locking, backups, health checks, and notifications. Managed hosting is appropriate when you value scheduled jobs and operational support more than direct control, but verify that it provides the rollback and log access your server requires.
Rollback procedure
- Stop the server and prevent the scheduler from launching another update.
- Record the failed profile revision and preserve the startup log.
- Restore the previous BepInEx directory and configuration files from the dated copy.
- Restore save data only if it was changed or damaged; do not replace healthy saves unnecessarily.
- Start the server and wait for BepInEx initialization.
- Check the logs and perform a client connection test with the matching previous profile.
- Leave automatic deployment paused until the incompatible package, dependency, or game-build change is understood.
After a successful rollback, label the restored profile as the active baseline. That label prevents a later operator or scheduled job from mistaking the failed revision for the known-good one.
Preflight and post-update checklist
Before deployment
- Server process is stopped and no other update job is running.
- Current BepInEx files, configuration, saves, and profile manifest have dated backups.
- Every selected package is tagged server or client-and-server.
- Dependencies resolve and the target V Rising build is supported.
- Players have been told which client profile revision they need.
After deployment
- Expected plugin and configuration files are present in the live BepInEx tree.
- Saves remain in their original location.
- BepInEx has completed initialization without loader or dependency errors.
- A test client using the matching profile can connect and exercise the updated features.
- The rollback copy is retained and the scheduler reports one successful run.
Bottom line: automate the process, not blind “latest” installs
Use r2modman to maintain a precise, versioned profile, then automate the operational sequence around it: stop, back up, update approved server packages, deploy to BepInEx, start, inspect logs, and test with a matching client profile. Keep client-only packages out of the server, pause after V Rising patches, and preserve a dated rollback set. That gives you repeatable updates without assuming that a desktop mod manager is a safe unattended server daemon.
