Watchtower is a Docker service that checks the images used by running containers and, when it finds a newer image, carries out its documented replacement and restart workflow. The safest production setup is to run it on a deliberate schedule, limit it with enable labels, begin in monitor-only mode for sensitive services, and postpone --cleanup until you have a separate rollback plan.
For most installations, choose exactly one timing method: --interval (or WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL) for a repeating delay, or --schedule (or WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE) for a six-field cron window. The documented default interval is 86,400 seconds, or 24 hours.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat Watchtower changes when an image is updated
Watchtower runs as its own Docker service alongside the containers it watches. It needs access to the Docker daemon through the normal Docker API mechanism used by your deployment. At each polling cycle, it checks eligible containers for a newer image. When one is available, Watchtower performs its documented update and restart behavior for that container.
Eligibility is determined by your targeting settings. A broad configuration can inspect many containers visible through the Docker API. A production configuration should instead use an explicit allow-list so that a newly deployed or unrelated container is not changed merely because it shares the host.

Watchtower does not make an image immutable or guarantee that every update is safe. It automates the pull-and-replace operation you have chosen. Application compatibility, database migrations, health checks, backups, and rollback remain operational responsibilities.
Prerequisites and safety checks
- A Docker host on which the containers and the Watchtower service run.
- A Docker API connection that lets Watchtower inspect the containers it is intended to manage.
- A decision about update timing: a repeating interval or a maintenance-window cron schedule.
- A target policy. For production, prepare enable labels and select only approved services.
- A way to observe the run, such as container logs or Watchtower notifications.
- A rollback method before enabling automatic replacement, especially if old images will be deleted.
Do not begin by enabling automatic updates for every stateful service. Start with a low-risk service or monitor-only behavior, verify that image checks and notifications work, and then expand the allow-list after a maintenance review.
Choose one scheduling method
Watchtower’s argument reference documents two mutually exclusive timing modes. Configure one, not both. Combining --interval with --schedule creates an ambiguous configuration and is specifically contrary to the documented setup.
| Mode | Setting | How it behaves | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Interval polling | --interval or WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL |
Checks repeatedly after the configured number of seconds. | Hosts that can poll on a rolling cadence and do not require a fixed maintenance window. |
| Six-field cron | --schedule or WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE |
Checks at times expressed by a six-field Cron expression. | Services that should update during a defined maintenance period. |
Interval mode
If you do not set a poll interval, the documented default is 86400 seconds. That is one check every 24 hours, not an immediate update when an image publisher pushes a tag. Set --interval to the number of seconds that matches your tolerance for update delay and your capacity to review logs.
The equivalent environment-variable form is WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL. Use either the command-line argument or its environment variable in the service definition, according to how your deployment manages configuration. Keep one authoritative value so an operator can tell when the next check is expected.

Cron mode
For a fixed window, set --schedule or WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE to a six-field expression. The official example is 0 0 4 * * *, documented as running daily at 04:00. The expression uses six fields, so do not copy a five-field system-cron expression without adapting it to Watchtower’s format.
If the schedule must follow a particular local timezone, configure TZ in the Watchtower service. Otherwise, the maintenance window may be interpreted in the host or container timezone rather than the timezone your team expects. Record the timezone beside the schedule in your deployment documentation.
How to select between them
- Use an interval when a predictable delay between checks is more important than a specific clock time.
- Use cron when restarts must be confined to a maintenance window, such as an overnight period.
- Never set both timing modes. Remove the unused argument and environment variable before starting the service.
Build the Watchtower service configuration
Add Watchtower as a separate service in the same Docker environment as the containers it will monitor. The service definition should include the Docker API access mechanism used by your host, one timing mode, your target policy, and an observation method.
Keep the configuration auditable. A useful service record states:
- Which Docker endpoint Watchtower can access.
- Whether it uses
--intervalor--schedule, including the numeric interval or complete six-field expression. - Whether
--label-enableis active. - Which containers are deliberately eligible.
- Whether monitor-only behavior is enabled.
- Whether
--cleanupor--no-restartis enabled. - Where logs and notifications are reviewed after a run.
Start the service with automatic updating disabled or in monitor-only mode while you validate the Docker API connection. A successful first run should show that Watchtower can discover the intended containers and check their images without changing them.

Restrict updates with an enable-label allow-list
For a production-sensitive host, use Watchtower’s label gate. Set --label-enable or WATCHTOWER_LABEL_ENABLE=true. With that setting active, only containers carrying com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=true are selected for monitoring and updates.
Labeling procedure
- Enable the global label gate in the Watchtower service.
- List the containers that have an approved update and rollback plan.
- Add
com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=trueto each approved container’s labels. - Leave the label off every database, stateful service, or exception that requires human review.
- Run Watchtower in monitor-only mode first and confirm that only the labeled set appears in checks and notifications.
- Switch the approved labels to automatic updating one service group at a time.
The label is an allow-list, not a risk assessment. A labeled service can still fail because of an incompatible image, a changed default, a failed migration, or a missing backup. Label a service only after deciding who approves its updates and how to restore the previous release.
What happens without the label gate
When you do not enable --label-enable, Watchtower can inspect the containers available through its Docker API access according to the rest of its configuration. That broad scope is convenient for a disposable development host, but it is difficult to govern on a shared production machine. If you cannot explain why every visible container may be restarted, use the label allow-list instead.
Use monitor-only mode before applying changes
Monitor-only behavior separates discovery from replacement. In this mode, Watchtower checks for newer images, sends notifications, and invokes configured pre- and post-hooks, but it does not perform the update. That makes it suitable for databases, stateful services, and images that require a human compatibility review.
A practical rollout sequence
- Run with the final Docker API access and schedule, but monitor-only behavior enabled.
- Confirm that the expected containers are discovered. If label gating is enabled, confirm that unlabeled containers are absent from the eligible set.
- Wait for a real check and inspect logs or notifications for the image name, container, and detected update.
- Review the candidate image’s release notes, configuration changes, and migration requirements outside Watchtower.
- Enable automatic replacement only for services whose rollback procedure has been tested.
- Keep sensitive services in monitor-only mode until an operator explicitly approves each update.
Monitor-only mode is also useful as a permanent policy. A service can receive update visibility and hooks while a human performs the actual deployment during a change window.

Understand the replacement and restart behavior
When Watchtower finds a newer image for an eligible container, it follows its documented update/restart workflow. The important operational consequence is that the running container can be replaced and restarted during the scheduled run. Applications should therefore be designed to tolerate a restart, or the service should remain monitor-only.
Before enabling updates, check how the application handles in-flight requests, persistent volumes, network dependencies, and startup ordering. Watchtower’s image check does not validate those application-level conditions for you. Schedule the run when a restart is acceptable and make sure your monitoring can distinguish a normal update restart from a crash loop.
The --no-restart option
--no-restart changes the normal restart behavior. Treat it as an exception that requires a specific operational reason, not as a universal way to make updates risk-free. If a container is not restarted after an image replacement, the running process may continue using the old image state until your own procedure handles the transition.
Document which service owns the follow-up restart and how operators verify that the intended image is actually running. Do not assume that suppressing a restart provides rollback; it changes the lifecycle action, while rollback still requires a known previous image and a recovery procedure.
Decide whether to enable --cleanup
--cleanup removes the old image after Watchtower restarts a container with a newer image. This reduces local image accumulation, but it also removes the immediately previous image from the host’s cache. If the new image fails, you may not be able to revert by selecting that cached image alone.

Enable cleanup only when rollback is external
Before turning on cleanup, confirm that your rollback method does not depend on the previous local image remaining present. Examples include a registry that still retains the prior digest, a deployment record that identifies the exact previous image, or a tested process for pulling that version again. The key requirement is an independently recoverable version, not merely a promise that the registry usually keeps old tags.
Keep cleanup disabled when rapid local rollback matters
Leave --cleanup off while you are validating automatic updates, when disk capacity is adequate, or when the host’s cached previous image is part of your emergency recovery plan. Once cleanup is enabled, record the image reference before each change if your rollback process depends on it.

Watchtower’s documentation warns about combining --no-restart and --cleanup when Watchtower updates itself. During that self-update, the existing Watchtower container can be renamed without a new Watchtower container being started, leaving the renamed container running without the expected replacement.
Review this warning before using those two options together. If Watchtower is included in its own update scope, treat it as a special case in your maintenance plan: decide whether it should be labeled, whether it should remain monitor-only, and how you will restore the service if the self-update does not leave a new watcher running.
Operational checklist for a first production rollout
- Choose interval polling or a six-field cron schedule; configure exactly one.
- If using cron, set
TZto the timezone that owns the maintenance window. - Give Watchtower only the Docker API access it needs.
- Enable
--label-enableorWATCHTOWER_LABEL_ENABLE=true. - Add
com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=trueonly to services with an approved plan. - Start in monitor-only mode and verify discovery, logs, notifications, and hooks.
- Review the candidate image and approve automatic replacement for one service group.
- Observe the scheduled run and confirm application health after the restart.
- Keep a record of the previous image reference and the recovery steps.
- Enable
--cleanuponly after confirming that rollback does not rely on the local cache. - Revisit the
--no-restartand--cleanupinteraction before allowing Watchtower to update itself.
Configuration choices at a glance
| Decision axis | Option A | Option B | Operational effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Update cadence | --interval / WATCHTOWER_POLL_INTERVAL |
--schedule / WATCHTOWER_SCHEDULE |
Repeating delay versus a fixed six-field cron window. |
| Target scope | All containers visible to the configured Docker API | --label-enable with com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=true |
Broad discovery versus an explicit production allow-list. |
| Action level | Automatic update and documented restart behavior | Monitor-only behavior | Apply the replacement versus check, notify, and run hooks without updating. |
| Restart policy | Normal restart behavior | --no-restart |
Restart as part of replacement versus suppressing that action for a deliberate exception. |
| Storage hygiene | --cleanup enabled |
--cleanup disabled |
Remove the old image after replacement versus retain the immediately previous local image. |
Troubleshooting common setup failures
Nothing is being updated
- Check that the polling interval or cron time has actually arrived. The default interval is 86,400 seconds, so a new service may wait up to a day before its first recurring check under that default.
- If label gating is enabled, verify the exact label key and value:
com.centurylinklabs.watchtower.enable=true. - Confirm that the image registry contains a newer image for the reference the container uses.
- Check whether monitor-only behavior is active; it reports updates but deliberately does not replace containers.
Checks happen at the wrong time
- Make sure only one of
--intervaland--scheduleis configured. - For cron, validate all six fields in the expression.
- Set
TZwhen the maintenance window is defined in a local timezone, then document the resulting UTC relationship for on-call staff.
The wrong containers are selected
- With label gating off, the Docker API scope may include more containers than intended.
- With label gating on, add the enable label only to approved services and remove it from services that require human review.
- Check that Watchtower is connected to the intended Docker daemon rather than another host or context.
Rollback is unavailable after a failed update
- If
--cleanupwas enabled, the old image may have been removed from the local cache. - Use the independently retained image reference or registry version defined in your rollback plan.
- If no external rollback exists, disable cleanup for future runs and establish a tested recovery path before re-enabling automation.
Watchtower disappears during its own update
Inspect the self-update configuration for the documented hazardous combination of --no-restart and --cleanup. A renamed Watchtower container may remain running without a newly started replacement. Restore the service using your deployment definition, then revise the options before allowing another self-update.
Recommended baseline
For a production host, a conservative baseline is: six-field cron during a documented maintenance window, an explicit TZ, label gating enabled, only approved stateless services labeled, monitor-only behavior for databases and other stateful services, and cleanup disabled until rollback has been demonstrated. After several successful observed runs, enable automatic replacement for the services that can tolerate it and revisit cleanup as a storage decision rather than a default.
