A dependable dependency audit combines a complete inventory of direct and transitive components, a reproducible lockfile, a current software bill of materials (SBOM), ecosystem-native checks, a second software-composition-analysis (SCA) scanner, and human risk triage. Start with known exploited vulnerabilities, then weigh exploit likelihood, reachability, exposure, severity and asset importance before changing versions. Rebuild, test, regenerate the SBOM and keep rescanning in CI/CD because new advisories can affect an unchanged dependency tree.
What a dependency security audit actually covers
A dependency audit checks third-party and open-source components used by an application, its build process and its delivery environment against known vulnerability intelligence. It is broader than running one package-manager command. The useful question is not simply “Does this project have a CVE?” but “Which exact component versions are present, where are they used, can the vulnerable code be reached, and what should we do next?”
Include everything that can ship, execute or influence a build:

- Transitive packages pulled in by those direct dependencies.
- Development dependencies that run in tests, packaging or release jobs.
- Compilers, build tools, package managers, plugins and CI actions.
- Container base images, operating-system packages and native libraries.
- Generated artifacts and vendored code that may not appear in a manifest.
OWASP’s supply-chain guidance specifically calls for build-tool versions and plugins to be inventoried and monitored, not just the libraries imported by application code. A scan that omits the build environment can miss a vulnerable plugin or an image layer that is deployed with the application.

1. Build a complete, reproducible inventory
Capture direct and transitive dependencies
Export the resolved dependency tree from each package manager and keep the manifest beside its lockfile. The manifest expresses intent; the lockfile records the exact graph that was resolved, including transitive versions. Commit lockfiles such as package-lock.json and review manifest and lockfile changes together.
Pin a previously verified version when making a security update. Pinning reduces the chance that a normal rebuild silently pulls a compromised or vulnerable release, but a lockfile is only an evidence record of what was selected. It is not proof that a package is safe.
Record where every component is used
For each component, record the application or service, environment, image or artifact, dependency scope, exact version, source repository, license and maintenance or support status. Mark whether it is production, test-only, build-time or transitively inherited. This context lets a team answer both “Which applications contain this CVE?” and “Which CVEs affect this application?”

Inventory non-package-manager inputs
Check container manifests, Dockerfile base images, operating-system package lists, native shared libraries, downloaded binaries, infrastructure modules, CI actions and generated bundles. Compare the final artifact with the source manifests: bundlers can include code that is difficult to identify from a top-level file alone.
2. Generate and retain an SBOM
Generate a CycloneDX or another accepted SBOM format during the build and store it with the artifact. An SBOM is the machine-readable inventory that makes later CVE impact analysis fast; it should describe the shipped component set, not merely the developer workstation.
| SBOM field | Why it matters during an incident |
|---|---|
| Package name and exact version | Identifies the vulnerable release without ambiguity. |
| Usage location and dependency scope | Shows which service, image, build step or artifact contains it. |
| License | Allows a security update to be checked for legal and policy impact. |
| Source or repository | Supports provenance checks and controlled replacement. |
| Maintenance or support status | Highlights components that may not receive fixes. |
Sign and publish the SBOM when your distribution model requires downstream verification. Feed retained SBOMs to a portfolio monitor so a newly published advisory can be matched against previously released versions, including versions no longer being built.
An OWASP Foundation and Cyber Security Agency of Singapore advisory dated 24 February 2025 reported an average of 68.81 dependencies per project and 5.12 critical vulnerabilities in an application. The figures are a named 2025 observation, not a universal benchmark; they illustrate why an inventory must be treated as an operational asset rather than a one-time report.

3. Run complementary audits
Use the package manager’s native audit first, then run an SCA scanner that resolves transitive components and correlates more than one advisory feed. Different tools model packages, aliases and native components differently, so agreement across tools is useful and disagreement needs review.
| Approach | Best use | Important limits or review points |
|---|---|---|
| npm audit | JavaScript and Node dependency trees from the configured registry. | Review proposed fixes, dependency and lockfile diffs, tests and any major-version change before merging. |
| pip-audit | Python dependency metadata and available fixes for publicly known vulnerabilities. | It is not a source-code analyzer and does not guarantee detection of malicious packages or every transitive shared-library issue. |
| OWASP Dependency-Check | Java, .NET and mixed projects; maps dependency evidence to CPE identifiers and associated CVEs. | It draws on sources including the NPM Audit API, OSS Index, RetireJS, Bundler Audit and NIST NVD feeds; CPE matching can produce false positives that require confirmation. |
| Trivy | Base operating systems, containers, filesystems, repositories and many language targets. | Define which image stages and filesystem paths are in scope so the result matches what is deployed. |
| Grype | Scanning an SBOM and correlating its components with vulnerability data. | The SBOM must itself be complete and generated from the artifact you intend to release. |
| OWASP Dependency-Track | Continuous portfolio monitoring and alerting from uploaded SBOMs. | It improves visibility over time; it does not replace build-time testing or human validation. |
JavaScript and Node
Run npm audit against the same lockfile used for the build. Treat an automated fix as a proposed change, not an approval: inspect the dependency diff, transitive changes, tests and release notes, especially when the suggested update crosses a major version.
Python
Run pip-audit against the resolved environment or requirements input. Its result covers publicly known package vulnerabilities and available fixed versions. It does not inspect your application’s source logic and cannot establish that a package is benign.
Java, .NET and mixed repositories
Use an SCA scanner such as OWASP Dependency-Check to resolve evidence from manifests, archives and other supported inputs. Examine the evidence behind each CPE match; a name-only match can refer to a different product or release line.
Containers and native components
Scan the final container image and its base image, not only the source repository. Include operating-system packages and native libraries that language-level tools cannot see. Use an SBOM-driven scan as a second view when the image is assembled from several stages.
4. Compare advisory sources and interpret findings
Record the advisory identifier, affected version range, fixed version (if one exists), publication date and the feeds that produced the match. Compare the package-manager result with your SCA scanner and authoritative sources such as the National Vulnerability Database, OSV and CISA’s Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog. A discrepancy can reflect an alias, withdrawn advisory, unavailable version metadata or a false positive; it is a reason to investigate, not to delete the finding.
What a clean result means
A clean audit means no matching known vulnerability was found in the scanned graph and feeds at that time. It does not prove that the package is benign, that your source code is secure, or that an unmodeled native or shared-library dependency is safe. New advisories can be issued for an unchanged lockfile, and malicious packages may not yet be represented in an advisory database.

Static-analysis and matching systems also have false positives and false negatives. Confirm the package identity, version and vulnerable function before closing a finding, and document the evidence for any exception.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Prioritize by exploitability and exposure
Start with CISA’s KEV catalog to identify CVEs known to be exploited. Use EPSS as an exploit-likelihood signal, then combine it with technical and business context:
- Whether the vulnerable code path is reachable in your configuration.
- Internet exposure and the boundary an attacker would need to cross.
- Privileges required and whether authentication is needed.
- Severity and impact on confidentiality, integrity and availability.
- Criticality of the affected service or data.
- Whether a tested fixed version exists and how difficult the change is.
| Priority signal | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Known exploitation (KEV) | Escalate immediately for exposure analysis, mitigation and a dated remediation owner. |
| High EPSS | Treat as a stronger indication that exploitation is plausible, even when severity is not the highest. |
| Reachable vulnerable path | Raise priority when the application invokes the affected function or protocol. |
| Production and internet exposure | Prioritize deployed, externally reachable assets over isolated development tools. |
| Severity alone | Use as context, not an automatic emergency classification. |
For every decision, record the owner, due date, affected versions, compensating controls and the evidence supporting remediation or accepted risk. A low scanner score is not automatically harmless, and a high score is not automatically an emergency if the vulnerable code is unreachable and the component is isolated.
6. Remediate without breaking the application
Remove what you do not need
Delete unused direct packages and the code paths that depend on them. Rebuild the lockfile, inspect removals and run the complete test suite. Removing an unnecessary component eliminates its future advisory and maintenance burden rather than creating another update obligation.
Upgrade or replace vulnerable versions
Prefer the vendor’s non-vulnerable release when it is maintained and compatible. Review transitive changes and license effects before merging. Avoid blindly applying force-upgrade flags: they can produce incompatible major-version jumps. Stage the update, run tests, exercise security-sensitive workflows and deploy through the normal change process.
Use a maintained backport when an upgrade is impractical
A maintained security backport can be appropriate when an application must remain on an older release line. Confirm its provenance, exactly which fix was applied, how it is distributed and when the application will exit that line. Debian and Red Hat backporting practices are examples of this model; an unverified local patch is not equivalent to a maintained backport.
Apply compensating controls only with an exit plan
Network isolation, disabling an unused feature or tightening permissions can reduce exposure while a fix is prepared. Document the control, validation evidence, owner and removal date. Compensating controls should not silently become permanent exceptions.

7. Verify the fix and refresh the evidence
- Resolve the intended version and inspect the complete manifest and lockfile diff.
- Build the same artifact type that will be deployed, including production-only layers.
- Run unit, integration and security-relevant regression tests.
- Run the native audit and SCA scan again; investigate residual findings and newly introduced components.
- Regenerate the SBOM from the rebuilt artifact and replace the stored version.
- Confirm that the deployed image or package contains the fixed version, not merely the source tree.
- Close the finding with the test result, release identifier, SBOM reference and reviewer.
If the scanner still reports the CVE, check whether another transitive path supplies the vulnerable version, whether a second artifact was deployed, or whether the advisory’s affected range includes the selected release. Do not suppress the result until the package identity and fix status are evidenced.
8. Automate the audit in CI/CD
Build-time pipeline
- Validate manifests and lockfiles, rejecting unreviewed dependency drift.
- Resolve dependencies in a clean, reproducible environment.
- Generate and sign the SBOM for the build output when signing is required by your distribution model.
- Run the ecosystem-native audit and an SCA scan, including container and native-library checks where applicable.
- Apply policy gates for KEV findings, exploitable production paths, prohibited licenses and unsupported components.
- Publish the artifact, SBOM and scan results together, then route exceptions to a named reviewer.
Implement these stages in GitHub Actions, GitLab CI/CD or an equivalent system. Keep human review for false positives, reachability decisions, provenance questions and risk acceptance; automation should make evidence arrive consistently, not hide uncertainty.
Continuous monitoring
Upload SBOMs to a portfolio monitor such as OWASP Dependency-Track and alert owners when a new advisory matches a released component. Monitor NVD, OSV and CISA KEV in addition to package-manager feeds. Schedule rescans because a fixed lockfile can acquire a new finding months later.
Update bots and their boundaries
GitHub Dependabot can monitor manifests, open update pull requests and issue malware alerts across Composer, Go, Maven, npm, NuGet, pip, RubyGems and Rust. It cannot catch every issue: newly reported malware may take time to enter its advisory database, and archived repositories are not scanned. Keep manifests and lockfiles current and retain a separate image and artifact scanning path.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.9. Establish an operating cadence
- Every change: review manifest and lockfile diffs, run tests and generate the SBOM.
- Every build: run native and SCA checks against the artifact that will ship.
- Every advisory alert: check KEV and EPSS, confirm reachability and assign an owner and due date.
- On a fixed schedule: rescan retained SBOMs and deployed images, even when source has not changed.
- At least during release reviews: inspect licenses, provenance and maintenance status for new or replaced components.
Keep an exception register with the finding, affected versions, asset, rationale, compensating control, approver, expiry date and verification evidence. Expiring exceptions prevent a temporary workaround from becoming an invisible permanent risk.
Choosing tools for a team
A local, open-source setup may be sufficient for one ecosystem and a small number of repositories: use the package manager’s audit, an SCA scanner, an SBOM generator and scheduled rescans. Larger portfolios may need centralized SBOM ingestion, policy management, ownership routing and managed update workflows.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Decision axis | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Ecosystem coverage | Does the tool understand every language, container and build system you ship? |
| Transitive resolution | Can it reconstruct the lockfile graph and inspect packaged artifacts? |
| Advisory breadth | Which feeds and aliases are correlated, and how quickly are updates received? |
| SBOM handling | Can it import, export, retain and sign the format your consumers require? |
| Exploitability prioritization | Does it expose KEV and EPSS alongside severity and reachability data? |
| Remediation workflow | Can it open updates, assign owners and record exceptions without bypassing review? |
| False-positive handling | Can analysts inspect matching evidence and document a decision? |
| License and provenance | Are license, source and maintenance details visible for each component? |
| Hosting and cost | Compare the operational burden of self-hosting with the controls and support of a managed service; exact prices depend on the selected product and plan. |
Commercial options such as Snyk Open Source and JFrog Xray are most relevant when language coverage, policy enforcement, portfolio scale or a managed workflow exceeds what a local open-source toolchain can provide. Evaluate them against the same axes rather than assuming a larger scanner removes the need for inventory, testing or human triage.

Common failure modes
Scanning only direct dependencies
Transitive packages often carry the vulnerable code. Scan the resolved tree and the final artifact, then identify which direct package introduced the affected version.
Trusting one feed or one score
Advisories differ in naming, timing and affected ranges. Correlate multiple feeds and use KEV, EPSS, reachability and exposure instead of treating a severity number as a complete decision.
Fixing the manifest but not the deployed image
Rebuild and inspect the shipped artifact. A stale layer, cached lockfile or separately released service can leave the vulnerable version in production.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Assuming “no CVEs” means “safe”
Known-vulnerability matching does not detect malicious intent, insecure application code or every native dependency. Pair SCA with code review, secure build controls and provenance checks.
Suppressing findings forever
Require an owner, evidence, compensating control and expiration date for every accepted risk. Revisit the decision when exploit intelligence or deployment context changes.
Bottom line
Make dependency auditing a repeatable supply-chain process: inventory every component that builds or ships, pin and review the resolved graph, generate an SBOM, run native and SCA checks, compare advisory sources, prioritize KEV and EPSS with real exposure context, remediate deliberately, verify the deployed artifact and keep monitoring after release. As the OWASP Foundation and Cyber Security Agency of Singapore concluded in 2025, “SBOMs and real-time monitoring of vulnerabilities provide developers a sustainable and automated approach to address risks posed by Open-Source Software (OSS) and third-party software components, in turn enhancing the cybersecurity posture of the software supply chain.”
