Assume the LiteLLM proxy and every credential it held were exposed until you can prove otherwise. Immediately restrict network access, preserve deployment and log evidence, inventory and revoke all virtual, master, database, and upstream-provider credentials, then issue narrowly scoped replacements. Correlate LiteLLM call_id values with reverse-proxy, WAF, cloud-network, PostgreSQL, and provider-usage records. Finally, remove shared administrator logins, review every organization, team, user, service account, key, and role, and patch every replica to the version required by the current LiteLLM security advisory.

Why a LiteLLM compromise has a wide blast radius

LiteLLM is often more than a request router. A deployment may contain virtual API keys, a master key, UI bootstrap credentials, database credentials, and upstream provider credentials. An attacker who reaches the proxy, its Admin UI, its database, or a host running it may therefore bypass budgets, model filters, team limits, and the proxy’s normal audit trail. A stolen provider key can also be used directly, producing activity that never appears in LiteLLM logs.

Do not treat an absence of an obvious application-log alert as evidence that no key was copied. Database reads, environment-variable access, container inspection, and direct provider calls can leave weak or no application-level traces. The correct objective is to contain first, preserve evidence, rotate every credential present during the suspected exposure window, and then establish what identities and permissions remain legitimate.

1. Contain the proxy and preserve evidence

Restrict public reachability

Move the LiteLLM proxy and Admin UI behind a VPN, an authenticated reverse proxy, an internal load balancer, or an equivalent network policy. Remove direct Internet ingress while keeping a controlled administrative path available. If the proxy must remain reachable by applications, allow only the required source networks and ports, and require authentication at the edge as well as inside LiteLLM.

Do not begin by deleting containers, rotating logs, or changing configuration without recording the original state. Those actions can destroy the evidence needed to determine whether keys were read or only probed.

Snapshot deployment metadata

Capture the following in the incident record, using UTC for every timestamp:

  • LiteLLM image or package version and the digest, tag, or lockfile used to deploy it.
  • Configuration files, enabled callbacks, model and route definitions, and the database connection target.
  • Names of environment variables and secret-manager references. Never copy secret values into the case file.
  • Ingress, reverse-proxy, WAF, load-balancer, firewall, Kubernetes, and cloud-flow rules.
  • The list of replicas, hosts, namespaces, jobs, and automation accounts that can run or administer the gateway.

Export the metadata before making remediation changes, then hash the exported evidence in your case-management system so later copies can be checked for alteration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve a complete time window

Retain reverse-proxy, WAF, load-balancer, host and container, Kubernetes, cloud-flow, provider-usage, and PostgreSQL logs for the entire suspected window plus a clean comparison period before and after it. Preserve raw logs before redaction or normalization. Record when each source was collected, its timezone, retention gaps, and the system clock used.

2. Inventory and rotate every credential

Build the inventory from the database, secret manager, deployment manifests, CI/CD systems, provider consoles, and historical configuration snapshots. Include credentials that appear unused: an attacker may have copied a value before it was first used by an application.

LiteLLM virtual keys and aliases Revoke every key that existed during the exposure window, then issue replacements with application or project scope, model restrictions, rate limits, and spend limits. Old keys return an authentication failure; replacements work only for their intended models and teams.
LiteLLM master key Rotate it even if no suspicious request used it. Update every secret-manager reference and dependent process. All replicas reject the old value and accept the new value consistently.
UI bootstrap credentials Retire shared environment credentials after named administrator accounts are tested. The Admin UI can be reached only through the intended identity path.
Database credentials Rotate the database user password or token and review its grants. Separate read, write, migration, and administrative accounts where practical. Applications reconnect with the new secret; old connections and credentials fail.
Upstream provider credentials Rotate every provider key or role that was present, not just the credential associated with the suspicious request. Provider-side tests show old credentials are invalid and new credentials have only required model and account scope.
CI/CD, cloud, host, and secret-manager identities Review and rotate identities that could read LiteLLM configuration, environment variables, images, or databases. Audit logs show no unexpected readers after the change.

Revoke first, then issue replacements. This prevents an attacker from continuing to use a stolen value while you are distributing the new one. Restart every gateway instance consistently and check for old replicas, stale jobs, cached environment variables, or blue-green deployments that still serve the previous secret.

Use provider-native least privilege

For AWS Bedrock, prefer narrowly scoped IAM roles and policies tied to the model ARNs the gateway actually needs. Avoid account-root credentials and broadly permissive policies. Apply the same principle to other providers: separate production and development access, constrain regions and models where supported, and attach a spend ceiling or alert at the provider account.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Hunt the access and application logs

Join events with LiteLLM call_id

Use LiteLLM’s per-request call_id as the primary join field. Start with a suspicious request in the proxy log, then find the same identifier in callbacks, centralized logging, reverse-proxy records, and any tracing system. Record the source address, authenticated key alias, user or team, model, route, status, latency, token counts, and response size. A missing call_id in an external system is itself a retention or instrumentation finding.

Search for administrative and configuration changes

Build a timeline for bursts or isolated events involving:

  • Key generation, deletion, regeneration, or alias changes.
  • Permission, organization, team, user, or service-account changes.
  • Model, route, callback, configuration, or budget changes.
  • Unusual administrative endpoints, methods, status codes, or request sizes.
  • New user agents, unfamiliar source IP addresses, impossible travel, or access outside normal operating hours.
  • Sudden spend, unusual model selections, large token volumes, or requests from a previously inactive key.
  • Outbound connections to destinations that are not normal provider endpoints, telemetry collectors, or approved management services.

Inspect Authorization headers and other request fields for SQL metacharacters or keywords such as a quote, UNION, SELECT, FROM, WHERE, --, or /**/. These patterns are indicators, not proof of exploitation; correlate them with HTTP status, database activity, response timing, and subsequent account or key changes.

Review PostgreSQL activity separately

Application logs may record only the failed request while the database records the consequential read. Examine PostgreSQL query logs and audit trails for access to credential, verification-token, configuration, user, team, and key tables. Look for reads by unexpected database users, hosts, processes, or time ranges, and for queries that enumerate many rows rather than serving one normal request.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Preserve the database logs in their original form. Note whether statement logging, connection logging, or an audit extension was enabled during the entire suspected period. If those controls were absent, document the resulting uncertainty instead of claiming that no database access occurred.

Compare provider-side usage with LiteLLM records

Export provider usage, billing, authentication, and key-management records for the same UTC window. Compare model, region, account, token, and cost data with LiteLLM spend records. Provider activity without a matching LiteLLM call_id may indicate direct use of an extracted upstream credential, a second gateway, or an accounting gap. Keep those cases open until the provider confirms the source identity or network.

Redact safely after preservation

Keep an access-controlled raw copy for investigators, then enable message redaction and user-key metadata redaction for ongoing operations where appropriate. Document which keys, teams, or administrators are allowed to opt out. Redaction should remove secrets without destroying the fields needed to join events, such as a stable key alias, team identifier, timestamp, source address, and call_id.

4. Audit organizations, teams, users, and service accounts

Export the current state before deleting anything. For each organization, team, user, service account, virtual key, and alias, record the owner, purpose, last-seen activity, role, organization and team scope, key-creation authority, deletion authority, model scope, rate limits, and budget authority.

Remove unnecessary identities and keys

  • Delete dormant users and service accounts with no accountable owner.
  • Revoke orphaned, duplicate, test, and never-used keys unless a documented exception exists.
  • Remove duplicate administrator identities and investigate why each was created.
  • Reduce model, budget, rate, and team scope to the minimum required for the stated purpose.
  • Require an owner and an expiration or review date for temporary access.

Check role scope, not just role names

Prefer organization- and team-scoped roles. Treat platform-wide viewers as sensitive: although they cannot mutate data, they can see all organizations, teams, users, spend, usage, and API keys. Confirm that every platform-wide assignment is intentional and monitored.

Review team administrators separately. They should be able to change only the fields the proxy administrator intentionally enabled. Regular team members should have only the key permissions needed for their work, not authority to create administrators, alter budgets, broaden model access, or delete another owner’s credentials.

Test effective permissions

Create test identities that represent a platform administrator, a platform viewer, a team administrator, and a regular team member. Attempt allowed and forbidden actions in a non-production organization. Record the expected result, the actual HTTP response, and the audit event generated. This catches inherited permissions and UI restrictions that do not match API enforcement.

5. Replace shared administrative authentication

Shared environment logins make attribution impossible and allow one leaked password to become a platform-wide compromise. Replace them with individual named administrator accounts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Create and test a per-user proxy_admin account for each administrator who needs access.
  2. Verify that each account can perform its assigned tasks and that a second administrator can recover access.
  3. Only after that test, enable disable_env_credential_login.
  4. Remove UI_USERNAME and UI_PASSWORD from deployment configuration and secret stores.
  5. If single sign-on is configured, verify password-login restrictions and identity-provider group mappings. A group mapping that grants platform administration to a broad engineering or support group defeats least privilege.
  6. Keep failed-login rate limiting enabled and review authentication failures by source address.

Disable the Admin UI entirely when operationally feasible, and manage it through a restricted administrative path instead. If it must remain enabled, enforce network controls independently of LiteLLM’s own login screen.

6. Patch the deployment and verify every replica

Check the current LiteLLM security advisory and release notes before choosing a remediation version. The CSAI Foundation research notes published April 28 and April 30, 2026 identify LiteLLM 1.83.7 or later as the complete remediation for the cited SQL-injection exposure. Treat that as incident context and confirm the maintainer’s current advisory before deployment. The configuration disable_error_logs: true is only a temporary workaround while patching; it is not a security fix.

Rebuild from a trusted image or package, verify image signatures where available, and restart every replica. Confirm that the running version, image digest, configuration, and secret references are identical across the fleet. A patched deployment with one old pod, worker, scheduled job, or standby environment still reachable is not fully remediated.

The CSAI Foundation recommendation for the cited exposure is explicit: every virtual API key, master key, and upstream provider credential stored in the affected deployment should be rotated as a precautionary measure. Apply that principle even when application logs show no successful extraction.

7. Validate recovery with deliberate tests

Credential tests

  • Call the proxy with each revoked virtual key and the old master key; confirm authentication failure.
  • Call approved models with each replacement key; confirm the expected model, team, rate, and budget limits.
  • Attempt a provider call with every old upstream credential; confirm provider-side rejection.
  • Check secret-manager access logs for reads by unknown principals after rotation.

Authorization tests

  • Confirm a regular member cannot create or delete keys outside the permitted scope.
  • Confirm a team administrator cannot alter platform-wide settings or another team’s budget.
  • Confirm a platform viewer can view only the intended data and cannot mutate it.
  • Confirm disabled users, deleted teams, and expired service accounts cannot authenticate.

Operational tests

  • Verify spend records, callback events, and external traces contain the same call_id for a controlled request.
  • Generate a failed-login event and confirm alerting identifies the source address and account.
  • Check outbound traffic from every replica against the approved provider and management destinations.
  • Monitor provider spend, authentication failures, privileged changes, and outbound traffic throughout a defined post-rotation observation period.

Document residual uncertainty explicitly: missing logs, unknown Internet exposure, unverified replicas, clock skew, provider activity that cannot be correlated, and any period in which database auditing was disabled.

Choosing controls for future audits

Self-managed LiteLLM can be operated securely, but the control burden is yours. When deciding whether to add LiteLLM Enterprise or an external observability system, compare the controls rather than the product name. LiteLLM’s Enterprise material describes the promise that “Every admin action is on record”; verify the current licensing, retention, and export terms before relying on that capability.

Control axis Questions to answer Why it matters after a compromise
Named identity and SSO Can every administrator use an individual account, SSO, and enforced group mapping? Attribution and rapid revocation are stronger than a shared environment password.
Role granularity Can platform, organization, team, viewer, member, and service-account permissions be separated? Limits the number of identities that can read keys or change budgets.
Audit completeness and retention Are key, permission, configuration, login, and data-access events retained for the required period and exportable? Supports reliable reconstruction when application logs are incomplete.
Secret management and rotation Can secrets come from a manager, rotate without drift, and be verified across replicas? Reduces stale credentials after an incident.
Network access controls Can the proxy and Admin UI be restricted by VPN, IP allowlist, private load balancer, or equivalent policy? Prevents an Internet-exposed login from becoming the first line of defense.
Redaction and privacy Can prompts, responses, and key metadata be redacted while preserving correlation fields? Balances forensic value with protection of sensitive content.
Provider-side correlation Can provider usage and billing be joined to gateway calls and identities? Reveals direct use of stolen upstream credentials.
Support and incident response Is there an accountable escalation path, advisory process, and retention guidance? Shortens the time between a newly disclosed flaw and a verified fix.
Total cost What are licensing, storage, staffing, retention, and response costs? The cheapest dashboard is not economical if it cannot answer who read a key.

Incident-close checklist

  • Public reachability is restricted and the Admin UI has a controlled path.
  • Deployment metadata, raw logs, timestamps, and evidence hashes are preserved.
  • Every virtual key, master key, database credential, UI bootstrap credential, and upstream provider credential from the exposure window is revoked and replaced.
  • Old credentials fail, replacement credentials enforce the intended model, team, rate, and budget scopes, and all replicas use the new references.
  • LiteLLM is rebuilt and patched to the version required by the current security advisory.
  • LiteLLM call_id values correlate across proxy, edge, database, cloud, and provider records where data exists.
  • Organizations, teams, users, service accounts, aliases, roles, budgets, and model permissions have accountable owners.
  • Dormant, orphaned, duplicate, and over-privileged identities are removed.
  • Named administrator accounts work, shared environment login is disabled, and failed-login monitoring is active.
  • Provider spend, outbound traffic, authentication failures, and privileged changes are monitored during the post-rotation observation period.
  • Known gaps and residual uncertainty are documented for management and future audit work.
