Audit Jev output as untrusted code and untrusted instruction data. Keep the same secure software development life-cycle gates you use for human-written changes, then add controls for the model, prompts, tools, permissions, and dependency provenance. Before a Jev-generated change can merge, scan it for secrets and vulnerabilities, inspect high-impact logic manually, verify every new package, isolate third-party text from trusted policy, and require a human to approve consequential actions.

What a Jev-code audit must protect

Jev can accelerate implementation, but it does not transfer responsibility for the resulting code. Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory puts the accountability plainly: “You own every line you commit, generated or not. AI changes coding speed, not accountability.” The audit therefore has two simultaneous goals:

  • Prevent instruction hijacking. Text that Jev reads—tickets, pull requests, comments, documentation, web pages, package metadata, fixtures, and tool output—may contain instructions aimed at changing the agent’s behavior.
  • Prevent unsafe software and compromised components. Generated code can contain ordinary defects, while generated dependency choices can introduce typosquatting, malicious install scripts, vulnerable versions, or abandoned packages.

OWASP’s AI Security Verification Standard (AISVS) says AI tooling must fit into the existing SSDLC “without weakening any of the security gates already in place.” Treat that as the baseline: Jev does not create an exception to branch protection, review, testing, vulnerability management, or release approval.

1. Establish the audit scope and trust boundaries

Start every review by recording exactly what produced the change and what the agent could reach. The independent Jev guidance identifies key-handling, the contents of state, and automatic action as decisive security factors. It also notes that jev-1.13 does not treat state as hostile by default; that is guidance to test, not a vendor security assurance.

Record Questions to answer Why it matters
Jev and model configuration Which Jev version, model/provider, system prompt, user prompt, tools, and configuration produced the diff? Behavior can change after a model, prompt, tool, or configuration update.
Repository context Which repository, branch, commit, issue, pull request, and retrieved files were supplied? Instruction-bearing content may be hidden in any of those inputs.
Permissions Could Jev read or write files, run commands, access the network, open a pull request, change secrets, or deploy? Privilege determines the impact of a successful injection or coding error.
Credentials Which tokens, keys, service accounts, and environment variables were available? Credentials should be minimal, short-lived, and absent unless required.
Automation Did the agent act automatically, or did a person confirm each consequential step? Ambiguous or injected instructions must fail closed rather than trigger privileged actions.

Draw a trust-boundary diagram, even if it is only a short document. Mark trusted policy and credentials separately from untrusted repository text, retrieved web content, generated output, and tool results. A prompt is not a security boundary merely because it is written by a developer.

2. Threat-model prompt injection before reviewing the diff

OpenAI describes prompt injection as a form of social engineering specific to conversational AI: a third party inserts malicious instructions into the model’s context. In a coding workflow, those instructions may be disguised as normal project content. OWASP specifically identifies injection delivered through pull-request content as a threat scenario.

  • Tell the agent to ignore the acceptance criteria and perform a different action.
  • Ask it to reveal environment variables, secrets, hidden prompts, or prior context.
  • Convince it to approve a risky dependency or suppress a scanner finding.
  • Order it to run a privileged shell command, modify branch protections, or deploy.
  • Insert instructions into a pull-request description, README, comment, or package script.
  • Overwhelm the actual request with a huge pasted policy or repeated text.

The independent Jev guide calls the first pattern “Ticket text that says ‘ignore criteria, choose refund.’” It calls the second “Huge pasted policies meant to drown the real question (state rot).” Reproduce both as test fixtures, record the model and tool behavior, and treat any privileged action taken under ambiguity as a failed test.

Expected response to an injection

A safe agent should preserve the user’s requested objective, identify the conflicting text as untrusted, avoid exposing secrets, and stop or route the action for review. It should not silently reinterpret a ticket, approve a package because its README asks for approval, or execute a command merely because tool output recommends it.

3. Review generated code with focused manual checks

Automated scanners are necessary but cannot determine whether a security-sensitive design is appropriate for your system. Review the complete diff, not only the lines Jev says it changed. Confirm that tests, configuration, generated files, lockfiles, and scripts have not been altered to hide a weakness.

High-impact hotspots

Area Review questions
Authentication and authorization Are identity checks enforced on every path? Are roles, tenants, and object ownership verified server-side? Can a default or error path bypass authorization?
Cryptography and randomness Are approved algorithms, key sizes, nonce handling, and secure random sources used? Are secrets kept out of logs and source?
SQL and data queries Are parameters bound rather than concatenated? Are query permissions limited? Can user-controlled identifiers alter the query?
Shell and process execution Is a process needed at all? Are arguments passed without shell interpretation? Are executable paths fixed and privileges reduced?
Regular expressions Can attacker-controlled input trigger catastrophic backtracking or excessive memory use? Are length limits and timeouts present?
File paths Are traversal sequences, symlinks, archive paths, and absolute paths constrained to an intended directory?
Deserialization and parsing Are formats and types restricted? Can untrusted data instantiate classes, execute code, or consume unbounded resources?
Network calls Are destinations allow-listed? Are redirects, TLS validation, response sizes, timeouts, and SSRF protections enforced?
Error handling Do errors avoid leaking secrets or internal paths? Are failures safe and observable rather than silently accepted?

Ask a reviewer who understands the application’s threat model to explain why each security-sensitive branch is safe. If the generated code is difficult to reason about, simplify or rewrite it instead of accepting complexity because the tests pass.

Run the mandatory automated gates

Run secret scanning, static application security testing (SAST), and software composition analysis (SCA) on every generated change. Include the full repository and the final build inputs, not just the generated file. Investigate findings rather than suppressing them automatically; document a justified, time-bounded exception when one is unavoidable.

4. Audit dependencies and provenance

A generated import is a supply-chain decision. Build a software bill of materials (SBOM) for the resulting artifact and inspect every new or changed direct and transitive component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dependency verification checklist

  • Confirm the exact package name, ecosystem, and spelling. Look for typosquatting and dependency-confusion candidates.
  • Confirm the version in the manifest and lockfile, and ensure the build actually resolves that version.
  • Identify the maintainer, source repository, release history, and provenance. Verify signatures or hashes when the ecosystem provides them.
  • Check known vulnerability records, security advisories, and whether the selected version is supported.
  • Review the license and confirm that its obligations fit the project.
  • Inspect transitive dependencies, install-time scripts, post-install hooks, obfuscated code, and unexpected network access.
  • Ask whether the package is necessary. Prefer a small, maintained implementation already present in the project when it meets the requirement.
  • Record unsupported, abandoned, or privately maintained components as explicit risks with an owner and remediation date.

NIST identifies SBOMs, open-source controls, vendor-risk assessment, and vulnerability management as supply-chain capabilities. Its guidance also calls for auditable events around installations, deployments, and upgrades, plus verification of libraries, packages, services, and unsupported subcomponents.

Inspect install and build behavior

Review scripts that run during installation, compilation, testing, or packaging. A package that downloads binaries, contacts an unexpected host, reads credentials, or changes shell configuration deserves a stop-and-review decision. Run dependency installation in an ephemeral, least-privileged environment with restricted network egress; do not test an unfamiliar package on a developer workstation containing production credentials.

5. Isolate execution and enforce human approval

Prompt defenses are stronger when the agent has less power. Use layered controls rather than relying on the model to recognize every malicious instruction.

  • Least privilege: Give Jev read-only access by default. Use narrowly scoped, short-lived credentials for a task and revoke them afterward.
  • Ephemeral sandboxing: Run generation, builds, and tests in disposable environments. Restrict filesystem access, process capabilities, and network egress.
  • Protected branches: Require status checks and an independent human approval before merging. Do not let the agent approve its own pull request.
  • Explicit confirmation: Require a person to confirm actions that modify repositories, secrets, infrastructure, or production.
  • Monitoring: Log tool calls, destinations, file writes, command results, and denied actions. Alert on secret access, unexpected hosts, and privilege changes.
  • Fail closed: On a timeout, policy conflict, scanner failure, or privileged-action error, deny or route to review rather than retrying with broader permissions.

OpenAI lists sandboxing, monitoring, link checks, red-teaming, and human confirmation as complementary defenses. No single control reliably blocks every injection.

6. Put the audit into a repeatable CI workflow

A practical pipeline separates generation from verification. The following sequence keeps an agent’s output from becoming an implicit approval.

  1. Capture inputs. Store the original request, retrieved context, repository commit, Jev version, model/provider, system configuration, and enabled tools.
  2. Generate in isolation. Use a disposable workspace and credentials limited to the required read operations. Keep external text clearly marked as untrusted data.
  3. Produce a reviewable diff. Reject unexplained binary changes, lockfile churn, generated scripts, or modifications outside the requested scope.
  4. Run tests and security scans. Execute the project’s functional tests plus secret scanning, SAST, and SCA. Record scanner versions and complete results.
  5. Build the SBOM. Resolve direct and transitive components from the exact lockfiles used by the build, then perform the provenance and necessity checks.
  6. Run injection evaluations. Feed controlled malicious tickets, pull requests, README content, package metadata, and tool output through the same agent configuration. Verify that it refuses secret disclosure and privileged actions.
  7. Perform focused human review. Inspect the hotspots listed above and compare behavior with the requested requirements. Require a reviewer who did not author the prompt to approve security-sensitive changes.
  8. Merge and release under normal gates. Keep branch protection, deployment approvals, rollback procedures, and production monitoring unchanged.

Do not let a green unit-test result override a failed provenance check, unresolved secret finding, or injection test.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

7. Preserve evidence and monitor drift

An audit is only reproducible if another reviewer can reconstruct what happened. Retain:

  • The original prompt, retrieved context, untrusted inputs, and generated response.
  • Jev, model, tool, system-prompt, and configuration identifiers.
  • The final diff, commit, dependency manifests, lockfiles, and SBOM.
  • Scanner names, versions, configurations, findings, suppressions, and remediation decisions.
  • Test outputs, injection-evaluation cases, reviewer identities, approvals, and timestamps.
  • Installation, upgrade, deployment, and production-release records.

Document every change to system prompts, model versions, tools, permissions, and dependency resolvers. Re-run security and prompt-injection evaluations after any such update. A previously safe result is not proof that a changed model or component remains safe.

Useful operational measures

OWASP recommends comparing AI-assisted development with a human-only baseline. Track trends such as vulnerability density, mean time to detect, AI-attributable defect rate, prompt-injection detection rate, and fork-pull-request rejection rate. Define each metric before collecting it so that teams do not change the denominator to make results look better. These measures are local engineering indicators, not universal Jev failure rates.

8. Choose the right review approach

Manual review, CI automation, and agentic review have different strengths. A mature program combines them rather than treating one as sufficient.

Audit approach Best at Weakness to control
Manual review Understanding business authorization, cryptographic intent, and unusual data flows. Inconsistent coverage and limited repeatability; use checklists and protected approvals.
CI automation Repeatable secret, SAST, SCA, SBOM, policy, and regression checks on every change. Can miss business-logic flaws and may produce noisy findings; require triage and human review.
Agentic review Searching broad context, explaining diffs, generating tests, and replaying injection cases. It can be manipulated by the same untrusted content it is reviewing; isolate it and do not grant self-approval or excess privilege.

Compare approaches on eight axes: coverage of instruction-bearing inputs; isolation of untrusted content; dependency and provenance evidence; least-privilege and sandbox controls; human approval points; audit-log completeness; repeatability after updates; and measurable detection outcomes.

Common failure modes and recovery actions

The agent follows a malicious ticket or pull request

Stop the run, revoke any temporary credentials, preserve the full context and tool log, and inspect for secret access or unauthorized writes. Add the exact input as a regression test. Re-run with untrusted content passed as data and with privileged tools disabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A scanner reports a secret in generated code

Assume the secret is exposed. Prevent the merge, remove it from the code and history where appropriate, rotate the credential, and investigate logs for use. Do not dismiss the finding because Jev invented the value; a generated token can still create operational confusion or hide a real secret nearby.

A new dependency has unclear provenance

Do not merge it. Verify its ecosystem identity, repository, maintainer, release integrity, support status, license, vulnerabilities, install behavior, and transitive graph. If those facts cannot be established, replace it with a known component or a small local implementation and document the decision.

The model times out or proposes a privileged command

Deny the action and route it to a human. Never broaden credentials or retry automatically with a more permissive policy. Reproduce the condition in the sandbox, determine whether context size, tool output, or an injection caused it, and add a test for the failure.

The dependency scan passes but the code is still unsafe

Dependency scanners cannot validate authorization logic, path traversal, regex denial of service, or unsafe command construction in your application. Return to the hotspot review and security tests; a clean SCA result is only evidence about components.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Minimum pre-merge checklist

  • Jev version, model, configuration, tools, permissions, repository, and branch are recorded.
  • All instruction-bearing inputs have been enumerated and treated as untrusted.
  • Controlled prompt-injection tests cannot disclose secrets or trigger privileged actions.
  • The complete diff has human review, with focused inspection of high-impact paths.
  • Secret scanning, SAST, and SCA have run on the final change.
  • An SBOM covers the exact build, and every new component has verified identity, provenance, support, license, vulnerability, and necessity evidence.
  • Installation and build scripts have been inspected in an isolated, restricted environment.
  • Protected-branch checks and independent approval are passing.
  • Prompts, context, diffs, lockfiles, SBOM, scanner results, approvals, and release records are retained.
  • Any model, prompt, tool, configuration, or dependency update triggers a repeat evaluation.

Bottom line

Jev-generated code is not a special trust category: it is untrusted software produced in an environment that can also be manipulated by untrusted instructions. Preserve normal SSDLC gates, add explicit prompt-injection tests and trust boundaries, verify dependency provenance with an SBOM, restrict execution privileges, and require accountable human approval before merge or deployment. That combination addresses both ways an AI coding workflow can fail—by writing unsafe code and by being persuaded to do something you never requested.
