To audit a Docker Hub repository, establish the digest and publishing identity you expected, retrieve the namespace’s audit events, compare each tag push with your release records, and verify the digest currently assigned to the tag. An unexpected tag-to-digest association or an unfamiliar actor is a trigger for investigation, not proof of compromise. Rebuilds, routine releases, rollback work and authorized automation can all move a tag.
The most reliable audit combines four evidence types: an independently maintained release baseline, Docker Hub’s event record, the repository’s current digest, and your identity and CI/CD logs. Treat webhooks as prompt notification and immutable tags as a preventive control; neither replaces historical evidence.
What an audit can establish
A Docker image tag is a human-readable name that can point to an image digest. Because tags are mutable by default, the same tag can identify different content at different times. A digest identifies the content-addressed image that was published. Your audit should therefore answer three separate questions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- What changed? Which repository and tag were associated with which digest?
- Who changed it? Which Docker Hub actor or automation identity generated the event?
- When did it change? What timestamp appears in the audit event, and does it align with your release window?
Those answers reconstruct activity. They do not, by themselves, establish intent. An actor may be authorized even when a release record is missing, and an apparently valid actor may have used a compromised credential. Confirm authorization through your organization’s access-control, source-control and CI/CD records.

Build an independent expected-release record
Do this before interpreting an anomaly. Docker Hub’s event data supplies comparison fields, but it cannot define what your organization approved. Store the expected record in a system that is independent of the repository being audited and protect it from routine edits.
Fields to retain for every release
- Fully qualified repository name and namespace.
- Release tag or tags, including whether a tag is intended to move.
- Expected image digest for each tag.
- Publishing actor, service account or automation identity.
- Approved release time, preferably in UTC, and the change or release identifier.
- Reviewer or approval reference and the CI/CD run that produced the image.
Record the digest after the build has produced the exact artifact you intend to publish. Do not preserve only a tag, because the tag can later be reassigned. If a release deliberately rebuilds identical source, record the new digest and the reason rather than treating a digest change as automatically malicious.
Define what counts as expected
Document whether development, staging and production tags have different movement rules. A rolling tag such as a branch or nightly label may legitimately change frequently; a versioned release tag may be expected to remain fixed. Also document approved emergency rollback procedures, because a rollback can produce a tag change outside the normal release calendar.
Prepare credentials and scope
Listing audit events requires a bearer token issued from an organization access token with the resource access and scopes required by Docker Hub for audit-log access. Use a dedicated, least-privilege credential rather than a personal token. Store it in your secret manager, restrict who can retrieve it, and avoid placing it in shell history or shared tickets.
Confirm access before a live investigation
- Verify that the token belongs to the organization namespace whose events you need.
- Confirm that its permissions include reading audit logs and that the account is allowed to access the relevant repositories.
- Check the token’s creation, expiration and rotation policy in your organization’s access-control records.
- Run a narrow, recent query first. A successful response with no matching events is different from an authorization error or a malformed request.
Do not broaden permissions merely because a query fails. First check the namespace spelling, time syntax, action filter and pagination parameters. If the API documentation or your organization’s policy has changed, follow the current documented scope names rather than assuming an older token is sufficient.
Retrieve Docker Hub audit events
The Docker Hub API operation for a namespace is GET /v2/auditlogs/{account}. The account value is the namespace whose events you are auditing. The documented example includes filters for repository name, action, actor and a bounded time range, plus pagination.

Use a bounded, reproducible query
Start with the smallest interval that contains the suspected change, then widen it if necessary. Keep a copy of the exact request, response, retrieval time and token identity in your investigation record. A request has this shape:
GET /v2/auditlogs/{account}?name=team/app&action=repo.tag.push&from=2026-10-16T00:00:00Z&to=2026-10-17T00:00:00Z&page=1&page_size=100
Authorization: Bearer $TOKEN
The path and query names above reflect the documented operation. Use the API host and timestamp format required by the current Docker documentation and your client. Keep the from and to values explicit; an unbounded request makes it harder to prove what period was examined.
Filter the event stream
namenarrows results to a repository.actioncan target the documented tag-push action,repo.tag.push.actornarrows the result to a user or automation identity when you are checking a particular publisher.fromandtodefine the investigation window.pageandpage_sizelet you retrieve additional results without assuming that the first response is complete.
When a response contains more results than one page, continue until all pages covering the time range have been collected. Save the raw responses before normalizing them into a spreadsheet or incident system; formatting can accidentally discard fields or timestamps.
Understand the event fields
A pushed-tag event example contains account, action, actor, name, timestamp and a data object. The data object includes the pushed tag and digest. Preserve the complete event, not just the digest, because the namespace, action and actor establish context.
Compare each event with the approved release
For every tag push in the interval, make a three-way comparison: the event, your expected-release record and the organization’s identity or pipeline history.
Expected event
An event is consistent when the repository and tag match an approved release, the digest equals the recorded expected digest, the actor is the approved person or service identity, and the timestamp falls within the release window. A small time difference can be normal when a pipeline queues or retries a publish; confirm it against the CI/CD run rather than silently widening the window.

Unexpected digest
If the tag is expected but the event records another digest, check whether the release was rebuilt, whether a rollback was approved, and whether the build produced a different base image or dependency set. Compare the digest with the artifact retained by your build system. If no approved change explains the difference, preserve the event and escalate to credential and pipeline review.
Unexpected actor
An unfamiliar actor may be a newly created service account, a delegated maintainer or an automation identity whose display name differs from its internal owner. Resolve the identity through Docker Hub organization membership, token ownership and CI/CD configuration. If the actor has no authorized path to publish, revoke or rotate the relevant credential according to your incident procedure and examine neighboring events for additional repositories or tags.
Unexpected timing or deletion pattern
A push just before or after a release can be legitimate, especially when a pipeline retries. A sequence of tag changes, deletions and repushes without a corresponding change record deserves closer review. Correlate the timestamps with source-control merges, build logs, deployment approvals and access changes. Do not infer intent from timing alone.

Verify the tag’s current digest
Audit history tells you what Docker Hub recorded. You must also check what the repository serves now. In Docker Hub’s Tags view, open the repository and inspect the digest displayed for the relevant tag. Compare it with the independently retained expected digest and with the latest relevant audit event.
Check local images
For an image already pulled to a controlled workstation or host, Docker documents:
docker images --digests
The output shows repository, tag and digest information for local images. Confirm the repository and tag columns before comparing values; a local cache may contain an older image, and a tag can resolve differently after a new pull. For a precise deployment or forensic record, preserve the digest-qualified reference rather than relying on a mutable tag.

Interpret mismatches
- Hub and local digest match, expected record differs: investigate the release record or an unrecorded authorized change.
- Hub digest differs from local digest: determine whether the local copy is stale, whether the tag moved, or whether the local image came from another registry.
- Hub digest differs from both the expected record and the latest approved build: treat the association as unexplained and begin access, pipeline and deployment review.
Record the time and interface used for the current-state check. A later tag move can otherwise make a screenshot or verbal observation impossible to reproduce.

Once an event is unexplained, expand the review without assuming compromise. Search for the actor in organization membership, access-token ownership, CI/CD secrets, runner logs and recent permission changes. Confirm whether the publishing job was modified, whether its source revision was approved, and whether the image was promoted through the expected environment.
Preserve evidence
- Raw API responses for every page and the exact query parameters.
- Docker Hub’s displayed tag and digest, captured with the observation time.
- Build logs, artifact metadata and the expected-release record.
- Identity, token and permission changes around the event timestamp.
- Deployment records showing where the digest was pulled or executed.
The reviewed Docker API reference does not state an audit-log retention period, guarantee that every relevant event is retained, or establish tamper-evident storage. For a high-assurance investigation, preserve records independently and verify the retention and integrity requirements that apply to your organization.
Prevent accidental or unauthorized tag movement
Docker documents immutable tags as a beta feature. Its definition is precise: “Immutable tags are image tags that, once pushed to Docker Hub, cannot be overwritten or deleted.” Tags are mutable by default, so immutability must be configured and tested.
Choose a tag policy
- All tags immutable: strongest constraint, but it can break workflows that intentionally reuse development labels.
- Regex-selected immutability: protect release patterns while allowing development tags to move.
- Mutable release tags: simplest operationally, but every consumer must resolve and retain digests and every movement must be audited.
A practical convention is to publish each release under a new version tag and reserve moving labels for environments where movement is deliberate. The exact pattern is an organizational decision; document it alongside the release record.
Recommended Free Tools
Roll out safely
- List the tags your automation creates, updates or deletes.
- Test the proposed immutable setting against a non-production repository and the same pipeline identity used for releases.
- Check how failed builds, retries and rollback jobs behave when a tag cannot be overwritten.
- Configure immutability at the administrator level, either for every tag or for tags selected by a regular-expression rule.
- Use Docker’s documented administrative update operation and its endpoint for verifying which tags match the rule, following the current API syntax.
- Monitor the first production releases for rejected pushes and update the pipeline to issue new version tags instead of overwriting protected ones.
Immutability prevents a later replacement or deletion; it does not prove that the first push was authorized. Continue retaining expected digests and auditing actors.

Add prompt notification with webhooks
Docker Hub webhooks can send an HTTP POST to a configured destination after repository push events. A receiver can turn that notification into a ticket, chat alert or secondary digest check within seconds.
Design the receiver as an alerting component
- Authenticate requests and restrict the endpoint to the traffic you expect.
- Store the received payload with an arrival timestamp and correlate it with the API event later.
- Alert on protected repositories, unexpected actors or tags whose digest is not in the release record.
- Retry safely and deduplicate notifications so a transient network failure does not create multiple incidents.
Use webhooks for prompt awareness, not as durable or tamper-proof audit storage. A receiver can be unavailable, misconfigured or compromised, and a notification does not replace the authoritative event query and independent evidence preservation.
Use signing advice with the correct caveats
Docker Content Trust is disabled by default. When enabled, Docker CLI operations on tagged images can require signed tags. Signing can help verify publisher trust, but it is a separate control from audit logs, digest comparison and tag immutability: a valid signature does not tell you whether a tag was moved at an approved time, and an audit event does not prove that the content was signed by the expected key.
Docker’s documentation warns that the Notary v1 service at notary.docker.io will shut down on December 8, 2026. Do not treat the legacy service as a future-proof signing strategy. Before enabling or expanding Content Trust, confirm the supported signing workflow, client behavior and migration guidance that apply to your environment.
How the controls fit together
| Control | Primary purpose | Evidence or protection | Operational requirement | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Audit API | Historical investigation | Actor, action, repository, timestamp, tag and digest in event records | Organization access token, required resource access and scopes; pagination and bounded queries | Retention period, complete-event guarantee and tamper-evident storage are not established by the reviewed reference |
| Digest comparison | Current-state and artifact identity verification | Exact content-addressed image identifier | Independently retained expected digest; Docker Hub Tags view or controlled local inspection | Does not identify who moved a tag or why |
| Immutable tags | Prevention | Constrains overwrite or deletion after a protected tag is pushed | Administrator configuration, optional regular-expression rules and pipeline testing | Documented as beta; can conflict with workflows that reuse tags |
| Webhooks | Prompt notification | Push notification delivered to your receiver | Reachable, authenticated receiver and alert processing | Not a substitute for durable, tamper-proof audit retention |
| Content Trust | Publisher-signature verification | Signed-tag requirement when configured and supported | Client configuration, signing keys and an operationally supported trust service | Disabled by default; Notary v1 shutdown is announced for December 8, 2026 |
A repeatable incident runbook
- Define the question. Identify the namespace, repository, tag, suspected time range and expected digest.
- Freeze the baseline. Export the approved release record and note the authorized actor or automation identity.
- Query events. Use
GET /v2/auditlogs/{account}with repository, action, actor and time filters as appropriate. Retrieve every page. - Preserve raw evidence. Save responses, request parameters, retrieval time and token identity.
- Compare. Match repository, tag, digest, actor and timestamp against the release and CI/CD records.
- Check current state. Inspect the Docker Hub Tags view and, where relevant, run
docker images --digestson a controlled host. - Resolve authorization. Confirm the actor, token, pipeline run and approval trail; investigate unexplained changes.
- Contain when necessary. Follow your incident process for credential rotation, access suspension, deployment hold or rollback, based on evidence rather than the tag change alone.
- Harden the workflow. Test immutable-tag rules, retain digests, and configure webhook alerting after the immediate investigation is complete.
Common failure modes and fixes
The query returns no events
Check that the namespace is correct, the time range includes the event in UTC, the action filter uses the documented value, and pagination has not been overlooked. Distinguish an empty result from an authorization or validation error. If the event predates available records, document that the absence is inconclusive rather than claiming that no push occurred.
The actor name is unfamiliar
Map the actor to organization membership, access-token ownership and CI/CD service accounts. Display names can differ from internal ownership records. If no authorized mapping exists, preserve evidence and follow credential-response procedures.
The digest changed after a rebuild
Compare the new digest with the build artifact and source revision. Reproducible source does not guarantee an identical digest when base images, package indexes or build metadata changed. Record the approved reason and new digest before updating downstream deployment references.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Identify the job attempting to overwrite or delete the protected tag. Change the release process to create a new version tag, or adjust the regex policy for genuinely movable development labels. Test retries and rollback paths before changing production settings.
A webhook alert and audit event disagree
Keep both records and compare their timestamps, repository and digest fields. A webhook is a delivery notification; the audit API is the historical query source described for reconstructing the event. Investigate delivery delay, duplicate notification or receiver parsing errors without discarding either record.
Quick Recap
Operational checklist
- Expected repository, tag and digest are recorded outside Docker Hub.
- Approved publishing identities and release times are documented.
- Audit-token scope and ownership are verified.
- Queries use explicit filters, bounded times and complete pagination.
- Raw responses and current-state observations are preserved.
- Digest comparisons use the exact tag and repository under review.
- Unexpected actors, digests and timing are checked against access and CI/CD history.
- Protected tags are tested before immutable enforcement.
- Webhook receivers authenticate, deduplicate and retain notifications.
- Signing plans account for the December 8, 2026 Notary v1 shutdown.
