Audit a Discord bot before authorizing it by matching every requested permission to a specific feature, checking the bot’s separate data access, and verifying where channel overrides will apply. Treat Administrator as a serious warning: Discord says it grants every permission and bypasses channel restrictions. If the request or the developer’s data practices do not fit your server, do not add the bot; if it is already installed, remove it by kicking the bot.
Why a permission audit matters
A bot is a third-party service created and operated by its developer. Its appearance in Discord does not establish that the developer is trustworthy, secure, or retaining data responsibly. Permissions describe actions the bot may perform, while data access describes information it may receive. Review both before authorizing an app.
A useful audit answers three questions:
- Does each requested permission support a feature you actually need?
- What member, message, voice, reaction, or language information can the bot access?
- Where will the bot be able to act after server roles and channel overrides are applied?

Understand the permissions you are approving
Administrator is an exceptional privilege
Discord Support states: “Administrator is the most powerful role permission. It grants all permissions and bypasses all channel restrictions, so be sure to assign this role with extreme caution.” The guidance was updated July 18, 2025. A bot that requests Administrator can potentially perform actions throughout the server even where channel-specific restrictions would otherwise deny it.
Do not approve Administrator merely because it is convenient or because a setup guide says to select every checkbox. Ask the developer to identify the feature that requires unrestricted access. If the bot’s job can be performed with narrower permissions, use the narrower request or choose a different implementation.
Administrator also makes a channel-by-channel containment plan ineffective. A private moderation channel, a restricted category, or a deny override should not be treated as a reliable boundary for an administrator-level bot. That is why this permission deserves a separate decision rather than being treated as one more checkbox in an installation dialog.
Scrutinize management and destructive capabilities
Give additional scrutiny to requests involving role management, message deletion, and channel creation. For each one, ask:
- Which named feature needs this capability?
- Does the bot need it continuously, or only during a one-time setup?
- Can the feature work in one support channel rather than across the server?
- What would be the consequence if the bot were compromised or misconfigured?
- Can the permission be assigned through a dedicated role instead of a broad existing administrator role?
Role management can affect who receives access to other channels. Message deletion can remove moderation evidence or ordinary conversation. Channel creation can produce unwanted spaces or expose content through incorrectly configured permissions. These are not automatically inappropriate permissions, but each needs a concrete, documented reason.
A permission list alone cannot prove the developer’s intent or data-retention behavior. Read the developer’s terms and privacy policy before deciding.
Permissions and data access are different reviews
Action permissions tell you what a bot can do. Data access tells you what information it can obtain. A bot can present a modest-looking action request while still receiving information relevant to its operation, so do not treat a short permission list as a complete privacy assessment.
Discord’s published baseline categories for bot and app data access include:
- Basic member profile information.
- Member roles.
- Message metadata, such as the day and time associated with messages.
- Voice-channel participation metadata.
- Reactions.
- Users’ language settings.
- Information supplied through direct communication or interactions with the app.
These categories describe the kinds of information Discord documents for bot and app access; they do not tell you whether a developer stores, shares, or deletes the information responsibly. For those questions, consult the developer’s own terms and privacy policy. Look for the stated purpose of collection, who receives data, security explanations, retention or deletion language, and a way to contact the operator.
Discord says bot data access can change over time and encourages regular review. A new feature, ownership change, or changed privacy policy is a reason to repeat the review even if the bot’s action permissions have not changed.

Six-step audit before you add a bot
1. Identify the app and its exact purpose
Write down the job you want the bot to perform: for example, moderating messages, assigning roles, or creating channels. Define the expected trigger and result in plain language. “Moderate the server” is too broad; “flag selected messages for moderators in one review channel” gives you something against which to test the request.

Do not infer trust from a listing, a recommendation, or the fact that the app can be installed through Discord. The developer remains responsible for the third-party service.
2. Capture the authorization request
Before clicking Authorize, record every requested permission. Compare each item with the function you wrote down in step one. A permission is justified only when you can describe the concrete feature it enables. If the installer asks for more than the advertised feature requires, pause rather than approving everything for convenience.

If the developer cannot explain a requested capability in terms of the feature you need, stop the authorization and seek clarification. Save a screenshot or written list of the request if your server requires change records; the installed app page can later show the app’s requested permissions, but an approval record should also explain your reasoning.

3. Check data access separately
Review the categories the bot can access, not just the action checkboxes. Consider whether the bot’s purpose genuinely requires member profiles, roles, message metadata, voice participation metadata, reactions, language settings, or information sent in direct interactions.
For example, a role-assignment feature may reasonably need member and role information, while a bot that only posts scheduled announcements may not need broad interaction with every message. Do not turn that example into a universal safe list: the bot’s documented design and the data-access view are the deciding evidence.
Read the privacy policy for collection, use, sharing, security, and retention terms. Discord’s documentation does not certify a developer’s practices; those details must come from the developer. If the policy is missing, vague, inconsistent with the bot’s behavior, or impossible to locate, treat that uncertainty as a reason to delay approval.
4. Map server-wide permissions
Discord builds server permissions from roles and the @everyone role. Identify the bot’s assigned role and inspect the permissions inherited at the server level. Server-wide settings are only the starting point, because channel overrides can change access for a particular channel.

Note which role grants each sensitive capability and whether the bot has been placed in a role created for another purpose. A dedicated, narrowly scoped role makes later review easier than a role shared with human moderators or unrelated integrations.

Use Discord’s permission and hierarchy documentation when checking the channel-level deny and allow behavior. Do not assume that a server-wide list tells you the bot’s effective access everywhere.
5. Inspect the channels where the bot will operate
Open the channels the bot is expected to use and review their permission overrides for the bot’s role. Check both the intended work channels and sensitive areas such as private staff, moderation, or incident channels.
- Confirm the bot can access the channels needed for its stated function.
- Confirm it cannot access channels that contain information unrelated to that function.
- Check whether a channel override changes an apparent server-wide permission.
- Review category settings as well as individual channel settings.
- Recheck after moving the bot to a different role or changing a category’s permissions.
Discord documents a channel-level sequence of denies and allows. Follow that documented evaluation when an override appears to conflict with a server-wide role setting instead of guessing from a single checkbox. Record exceptions, such as one support channel where the bot is intentionally enabled.

Channel overrides are part of the effective scope, so a bot should not be evaluated from the authorization screen alone. Sensitive channels deserve an explicit check even when the bot is intended to work elsewhere; an accidental inherited permission can matter more there than in a public discussion channel.
6. Make the decision and document it
Approve the bot only when its requested actions, data access, and effective channel scope fit the job and the developer’s published practices are acceptable. Record who approved it, the date, the purpose, and any channels or roles intentionally included. This gives future administrators a reasoned baseline for review.
Set a review trigger rather than assuming the approval lasts forever. Recheck after a major bot update, a new feature, a change in ownership, a privacy-policy change, or a change to the bot’s role and channel assignments. Discord specifically notes that data access can change over time.
How to check an installed bot in Discord
Review the server’s app list
- Open the server in Discord desktop or a browser.
- Open Server Settings.
- Select Integrations, then Bots and Apps.
- Review the installed apps, when each was added, and who added it.
- Open the individual app details to inspect its requested permissions.
Discord describes this location in its Server Integrations Page documentation. This view is useful for finding older installations whose original approver is no longer active. Labels and availability can change as Discord updates its interface, so the exact wording may differ between desktop, browser, and later releases.

In Discord desktop or a browser, open the bot’s profile and select the Data Access tab when it is available. Use the view to see the bot-specific data categories Discord presents. Compare those categories with the bot’s purpose and with the developer’s privacy explanation.
The Data Access view is not a security certification and does not replace reading the developer’s policy. It is a way to make the categories visible so you can ask whether they are proportionate to the feature you approved.
Discord encourages regular review because an app’s data access can change over time. Revisit the profile after major bot updates or when the bot adds new features. If the tab or another label is unavailable in your client, check Discord’s current support documentation rather than assuming that no data access exists.

How Discord’s permission hierarchy affects the result
A permission request is not the same as effective access. Roles and @everyone establish server-wide permissions, while channel overrides can modify access for individual channels. A bot’s role position and the channel’s own overrides therefore matter when you evaluate what it can actually do.

If you change the bot’s role, category permissions, or channel overrides, repeat the check.
When comparing the authorization screen with the installed configuration, distinguish three questions: what the app requested, what its assigned roles grant, and what each channel ultimately permits. Keeping those questions separate prevents an apparently narrow request from being treated as proof of narrow access.
Comparing two bots for the same job
If two bots claim to perform the same task, compare them using the same worksheet rather than choosing based on popularity or a short feature list.

Do not call one bot safer solely because it asks for fewer visible checkboxes. Decision framework: approve, narrow, or reject
Approve
Approve when every requested capability maps to a feature you need, the bot has no unjustified broad privilege, its data categories are proportionate, and channel access is limited to the areas where it operates. Keep a record of the approval rationale.
Narrow the scope
Use a less privileged role, remove unnecessary permissions, or restrict access to specific channels when the bot can function without server-wide access. Ask the developer whether a setup mode or feature-specific configuration supports a narrower scope. Recheck the effective result after making the change; removing a server-level permission does not answer what a separate role or channel override may grant.
Reject or remove
Do not authorize a bot when its request is broader than its function, the developer cannot explain the need, or the data practices do not meet your requirements. If the bot is already installed, Discord’s guidance says to remove the app by kicking its bot from the server.
The owner or a member with Manage Server can add server apps. Coordinate with those administrators so an unwanted app is not re-added without review. Discord’s installation and removal guidance is in Using Apps on Discord. Discord notes that some user-app directory installation features are experiments rolling out gradually, so installation screens and availability may not be identical for every account.
Common audit mistakes
- Approving every checkbox: convenience is not a justification for Administrator or other broad management powers.
- Looking only at permissions: data access and privacy terms require a separate review.
- Ignoring channel overrides: effective access varies by channel, not just by the server-level role list.
- Trusting the installer’s presence: Discord hosts the installation flow, but the app is still operated by a third-party developer.
- Assuming a privacy policy is a guarantee: a policy explains stated practices; it does not certify security or eliminate the need for continued review.
- Never revisiting an approval: Discord says data access can change, so review the bot profile and access page periodically.
- Leaving an unnecessary bot installed: remove it when its purpose ends or its scope becomes unacceptable.
- Forgetting who approved it: without an owner and date, later administrators may keep an app simply because no one knows why it was added.

- The bot’s name and stated function.
- The date and administrator who approved it.
- The requested permissions and the feature mapped to each sensitive capability.
- The data-access categories shown in the bot profile.
- The roles, categories, and channels where it is permitted to operate.
- The developer’s terms and privacy-policy links reviewed at approval time.
- Any unanswered question, exception, or reason a broad permission was accepted.
- The next review trigger, such as a major update, ownership change, or new feature.
This record turns a one-time authorization into an accountable access decision and makes later removal or reconfiguration straightforward. It also gives a new owner enough context to compare a replacement bot without repeating avoidable mistakes.
