Audit and revoke an AI agent in layers: identify the agent and its owner, reconstruct what it did, disable its identity, rotate or revoke credentials, invalidate tokens and sessions, remove downstream grants, and then prove that the old access is denied. Disabling an agent in its own platform is not enough if a connected service still accepts an issued token, shared API key, or delegated permission.
The procedure below gives you a provider-neutral runbook, verification tests, and design controls that make the next shutdown faster and safer.
Why an agent can remain authorized after it is disabled
An agent usually acts through several authorization layers. Its orchestration service may have a workload identity; that identity may obtain a client secret, certificate, API key, or access token; the token may be accepted by databases, SaaS tools, cloud APIs, or internal services. OAuth grants, role assignments, service accounts, and cached sessions can remain in those downstream systems after the agent is marked inactive.

Shared credentials make the problem harder. If an agent used a human account or a static key shared with other workloads, you cannot reliably attribute past actions or stop only that agent without rotating the credential for every user. Effective access is the union of the roles, group memberships, delegated grants, tool permissions, network paths, and downstream authorizations that are accepted at the time of a call—not merely what one agent-management screen displays.

1. Establish the identity and intended authority
Create an identity record
Start with the specific run, workload, or agent and record:
- A unique agent or service identity and its named human or team owner.
- The task purpose, approved data sets, tools, environments, and deployment location.
- Whether the agent acted autonomously or on behalf of a signed-in user.
- Every credential type it could use, where each credential is stored, and its expiry or rotation policy.
- Connected services, integration accounts, queues, webhooks, and service identities used during the run.
- The task start and end times, run identifier, and any change ticket or approval that authorized it.
A dedicated identity lets you separate agent activity from human activity. When an agent acts for a user, preserve both identities: the service identity should identify the agent, while a signed user context should identify the person or application that requested the action. Do not make the agent assume the user’s password or reusable role credentials.
Map effective permissions, not just assigned roles
Export or inspect permissions in the identity provider and in each connected service. Include direct roles, group-derived roles, resource policies, OAuth scopes, tool-level allowlists, network access, and permissions inherited by a service account. Note the resource and action each grant permits. A role named operator can mean very different authority in two systems, so document the actual resources and operations.

Mark permissions as required for the completed task, temporarily elevated, no longer needed, or unexplained. This inventory is the baseline for removing stale grants and for investigating actions that fall outside the approved scope.

2. Reconstruct what the agent did
Collect all relevant logs
Search the task window in every layer that can record activity:
- Identity-provider sign-ins, token issuance, refresh-token use, and credential changes.
- Agent orchestration events, prompts or jobs, tool invocations, policy decisions, and run status.
- Cloud audit trails and API gateway logs.
- Application, database, storage, messaging, and SaaS audit logs.
- Permission, group, OAuth-consent, secret, and service-account changes.
- Network, endpoint, and proxy telemetry when the agent ran outside a managed platform.
Use a shared run or correlation ID when available. If systems use different IDs, build a timeline by matching the agent identity, source address, token subject, timestamps, and called resource. Review activity slightly before the task began and after it ended to catch token acquisition, delayed jobs, retries, and persistence.
Record attribution fields
For each significant event, retain the agent identity, named owner, acting user when applicable, role or credential, effective scope, action, resource, timestamp, source environment, result, and correlation ID. These fields distinguish an agent action from a human action and show whether a call used an approved permission or an unexpected path. Centralized organization-level trails are preferable to logs that exist only inside one workload.

Preserve evidence before changing access
If you suspect misuse, export or lock the relevant logs before disabling systems that might erase volatile telemetry. Preserve token and secret metadata, configuration snapshots, approval records, and the list of connected services. Restrict access to the copies and record who handled them. Investigate unauthorized activity and remediate its cause before restoring any capability.

3. Revoke access in every layer
Use the identity provider and each target service’s supported controls. Work through this order, adapting it to dependencies so that a running incident process is not accidentally interrupted before evidence is captured.
- Disable or suspend the dedicated agent identity. Block sign-in and new token acquisition for the workload, service account, or agent principal. Record the time and the administrative actor.
- Revoke or rotate credentials. Replace exposed or unnecessary client secrets, API keys, certificates, signing keys, and database passwords. Remove the old value from secret stores and deployment configuration after dependent workloads have moved to the replacement.
- Invalidate active tokens and sessions. Revoke refresh tokens and access tokens when the provider supports it; terminate browser, workload, and tool sessions. Check token lifetime and revocation behavior rather than assuming a disabled identity invalidates already-issued tokens.
- Remove delegated and downstream grants. Delete OAuth consents, tool permissions, role assignments, group memberships, resource-policy entries, and service-account bindings that were temporary or are no longer justified. Check every connected system, not only the agent platform.
- Handle shared credentials as a broader exposure. If the agent used a key or human permission shared with other workloads, rotate it for all consumers, identify each consumer, and issue separate credentials. Until rotation is complete, treat every user of that credential as potentially exposed.
- Check integrations and indirect paths. Review webhooks, automation rules, queues, scheduled jobs, delegated service identities, and cached connections that could continue making calls after the primary identity is disabled.
Microsoft’s least-privilege guidance explicitly recommends testing revocation paths that include disabling the agent, rotating credentials, invalidating tokens, and removing stale permissions. Australian Signals Directorate guidance likewise calls for revoking affected API keys, sessions, and tokens, preserving logs, and investigating suspected compromise.
4. Prove that revocation worked
Run negative tests
After propagation should have completed, use a controlled test to attempt the old access path against each relevant service:
- Present the disabled identity or old credential to the identity provider and confirm that authentication or token issuance is rejected.
- Use an old access or refresh token, where safe and supported, and confirm that it is rejected or cannot be refreshed.
- Attempt a representative read and write against every downstream service that previously accepted the agent. Use a harmless test resource for write attempts.
- Check that removed OAuth grants, roles, and group memberships no longer authorize the operation.
- Confirm that replacement credentials work only for the newly approved scope.
The exact commands and waiting period depend on the identity provider and target service. Record the test time, credential or session identifier, endpoint, expected result, actual result, and propagation delay. A green disabled status is not evidence that an old token or downstream authorization has stopped working.

Monitor after the cut-off
Continue searching sign-ins, token use, tool calls, and downstream audit events for the disabled identity, old key identifier, token subject, or correlation IDs. Alerts should cover attempted use as well as successful use. An unexpected success means the revocation is incomplete or another identity is being used; return to the permission map and credential inventory.
5. Respond differently when compromise is suspected
For a routine task completion, remove temporary access and retain normal audit records. For suspected compromise, treat the agent and every credential it could reach as an incident:
- Preserve logs and configuration before cleanup.
- Revoke affected keys, sessions, refresh tokens, and access tokens immediately.
- Isolate the runtime, host, connector, or network path if it may be compromised.
- Search connected services for unauthorized reads, writes, permission changes, and newly created credentials.
- Rotate secrets that may have been exposed through prompts, tool output, logs, environment variables, or debugging traces.
- Document the root cause and corrective controls before restoring any access.
Do not restore the agent merely because its original task is incomplete. Reauthorize only after the identity, scope, credentials, and monitoring have been reviewed.
6. Make future revocation routine
Use identity and credential controls that limit blast radius
| Control | How it helps | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated identity per agent or workload | Separates attribution and permits one agent to be disabled without disabling unrelated work. | The identity has a named owner and is not reused by people or other workloads. |
| Short-lived, task-scoped credentials | Limits the time and resources available if a token or secret leaks. | Expiry, audience, scope, and renewal rules match the task window. |
| Just-in-time elevation | Provides higher privilege only for an approved operation and period. | Elevation requires an approval or policy decision and expires automatically. |
| Credential brokerage or secret isolation | Lets a tool call use a secret without exposing the reusable value to the agent. | The agent receives only the minimum operation result, and access is logged. |
| Centralized, attributable audit trails | Connects agent, user, action, resource, and run into one investigation timeline. | Logs are retained, protected from alteration, and searchable across services. |
| Automated revocation tests | Detects providers that leave tokens or downstream grants active. | Tests run against representative credentials and alert on unexpected success. |
Review authority when the system changes
Recalculate effective permissions whenever the agent gains a tool, changes its workflow, receives new data, moves environments, or is connected to a different service. Remove grants that no longer support the stated purpose. Schedule an owner review for dormant identities and credentials, but do not rely on a calendar review alone for high-risk changes.

7. Compare implementation options by control, not brand
Microsoft Entra Agent ID guidance, AWS IAM and agentic-AI guidance, and Google Cloud Agent Identity documentation illustrate different implementation approaches. They are examples rather than a universal product ranking. Evaluate any platform or internal design against the same questions:
| Decision area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Identity and ownership | Does every agent have a distinct principal, named owner, lifecycle state, and run identifier? |
| Credential lifetime and scope | Can the system issue short-lived credentials limited to the task, audience, actions, and resources? |
| Revocation | Can administrators disable the identity, rotate secrets, invalidate active tokens, terminate sessions, and remove downstream grants? |
| Attribution | Do logs show the agent, on-behalf-of user, action, resource, result, and correlation ID? |
| Secret isolation | Can tools broker access without returning reusable secrets to the agent? |
| Integration | Does the design work with the organization’s identity provider, cloud accounts, SaaS tools, and existing audit pipeline? |
8. Platform-specific considerations
Microsoft environments
Use the organization’s identity controls and Microsoft Entra Agent ID practices to document ownership, effective permissions, and revocation behavior. Validate not only the agent principal but also tokens and permissions held by connected resources. Microsoft’s published control guidance emphasizes testing each revocation path instead of assuming that disabling an agent propagates everywhere.
AWS environments
Use separate service identities rather than human identities, and propagate signed user context when an agent acts for a person. Review IAM policies, role sessions, resource policies, and CloudTrail records. Centralized organization trails and tool-invocation logging help attribute an action to the agent and its requesting user. Pay particular attention to shared static tokens and roles that lack a practical revocation path.
Google Cloud environments
Use agent identity and audit capabilities that can record both the agent and the user when the agent acts on a user’s behalf. Confirm how token expiration, revocation, service-account permissions, and downstream API authorization behave in the specific project and integration. Google’s Agent Identity documentation was updated on October 9, 2026; implementation details can change, so verify the current behavior in your tenant.
Common failure modes and fixes
- Only the agent is disabled: Rotate its credentials and test old tokens and downstream calls.
- A human account was reused: Separate the agent identity, preserve user context through signed delegation, and rotate the human credential if it was exposed.
- One dashboard was treated as the whole permission map: Inspect roles, groups, resource policies, OAuth grants, and service identities in every connected system.
- Logs identify only an application: Add agent, user, run, action, resource, and correlation fields before the next task.
- Revocation was assumed to be immediate: Measure propagation and test authentication, token refresh, and representative downstream operations.
- Evidence was deleted during cleanup: Preserve and restrict log copies before making changes when misuse is suspected.
- Temporary elevation became permanent: Set automatic expiry and remove the role or grant after the task.
- Old integrations continued running: Inspect scheduled jobs, webhooks, queues, cached sessions, and delegated service identities.
Operational checklist
Use this checklist at the end of every agent task or incident:
Quick Recap
- Agent identity, owner, run ID, purpose, tools, data, and environment are recorded.
- Effective permissions and connected systems are mapped.
- Identity, token, tool, and downstream activity has been reviewed for the task window.
- Relevant logs and configuration snapshots are preserved when risk warrants it.
- Identity is disabled or suspended.
- Secrets, API keys, certificates, and exposed credentials are revoked or rotated.
- Access and refresh tokens and active sessions are invalidated where supported.
- Temporary roles, OAuth grants, group memberships, and downstream permissions are removed.
- Shared credentials are rotated for every consumer and replaced with separate identities.
- Old credentials and sessions fail controlled tests against each relevant service.
- Post-revocation monitoring shows no successful use of the old access path.
- Any suspected unauthorized activity has an incident record and remediation owner.
