Audit an AI service account by comparing its effective permissions with verified workload activity, then reduce access in tested stages rather than deleting grants all at once. Inventory every non-human identity and its owner; inspect direct, inherited and delegated access; verify that logs cover the actions you care about; replace broad or persistent credentials; test narrower access outside production; and record the decision with a next review date.
An AI agent’s identity belongs in the same cloud identity control plane as other machine identities. Per-tool authorization and a fresh approval for consequential actions add useful safeguards, but they do not replace ordinary role, policy, credential and trust reviews.
What counts as excessive permission on an AI service account?
Excessive permission is access that is broader, longer-lived or more transferable than the workload requires. A model-serving process may need to read a specific storage prefix, but the attached role might also allow deletion, policy changes or access to unrelated projects. An agent that can call a deployment tool may not need permission to create credentials for another identity.

Review both the action and the path to that action. A service account can become more powerful through an inherited role, an impersonation grant, a trust relationship, a group membership, a permission to edit identity policies or a permission to create keys. Removing only the visible role can leave an indirect route intact.

Start with an accountable inventory
Make one record for each service account, managed identity, service principal and workload identity used by an AI application, agent, evaluation job, data pipeline or tool connector. Include non-production identities; pilots and abandoned experiments are common sources of forgotten access.
| Inventory field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Stable identifier | Provider ID, application ID or principal name | Prevents similarly named identities being confused during changes. |
| Workload and environment | Agent, model endpoint, tool, batch job, development, test or production | Separates a safe test change from a production dependency. |
| Owner and backup owner | Named team or person with a response path | Someone must confirm purpose, dependencies and exceptions. |
| Purpose and resources | Business function, projects, subscriptions, accounts, data stores and tools | Creates a testable explanation for every grant. |
| Credential details | Managed or federated identity, token type, key age, lifetime and storage location | Shows whether a persistent secret can be removed. |
| Permission source | Direct role, group, resource policy, inherited policy, trust or consent grant | Reveals access that is not visible on the identity itself. |
| Review metadata | Evidence window, approver, exceptions, change ticket and next review date | Makes the decision repeatable and auditable. |
Find identities that need immediate attention
- Accounts created for pilots, retired code or one-time migrations.
- Shared identities used by unrelated agents or environments.
- Identities with no responsive owner or business justification.
- Accounts with broad administrator roles, wildcard actions or access across projects or accounts.
- Long-lived keys, downloaded secrets or credentials embedded in source code.
Provider guidance supports regular inventory and lifecycle review, but it does not set one universal review interval. Set the next date according to data sensitivity, change rate and the identity’s ability to affect production.
Calculate effective access, not just attached roles
For each identity, build an effective-permissions view that combines direct assignments with grants inherited from projects, folders, subscriptions, groups and organization-level policies. Include resource policies, trust policies and application consent. Then examine who can act as the identity, change its policies, create credentials for it or grant another principal the same capability.

An operator who can impersonate a service account can exercise that account’s permissions without owning it. A project- or folder-level impersonation grant may therefore expose several service accounts. A permission to create a key can turn a temporary role into a persistent credential, while a permission to edit identity policies can enable self-escalation. Treat these as privileged access even when the account’s own allow policy looks narrow.

Application scopes and consent
For Microsoft Entra service principals, inspect application permissions and OAuth consent grants alongside Azure role assignments. Compare broad scopes with narrower alternatives. For example, an application that only reads files may not need Files.ReadWrite.All; a read-only scope can remove write and delete capability while preserving the function.
Inherited-policy blind spots
A service-account resource policy may not display roles inherited from a parent project or folder. Examine the provider’s effective-access or policy-analysis view, and inspect parent resources directly when the result is incomplete. Record which policies were checked so a later reviewer can reproduce the calculation.
Measure use without mistaking silence for safety
Compare grants with audit events, sign-in records, workload logs, access-analysis recommendations and last-access information. Choose an evidence window that covers the application’s deployment cycle and seasonal or scheduled jobs. There is no provider-mandated number of days that is safe for every AI workload.
Check telemetry coverage first
Absence of an event proves little if the relevant event type was never logged or has already aged out of retention. AWS notes that default CloudTrail logging does not include some S3 object-level and DynamoDB item-level events. If an agent reads objects or items, enable the appropriate data-event logging before treating those permissions as unused. Apply the same principle to other providers: verify that the log captures the data-plane action, identity, resource and outcome you need.

Ask about rare and hidden operations
- Scheduled reports, monthly close, model refreshes and disaster-recovery jobs may run outside the normal observation window.
- Deployment and rollback paths can require a permission that routine inference never uses.
- Failure handling may call a queue, secret store or notification service only when another dependency is unavailable.
- A tool may make data-level calls that do not appear in a high-level sign-in report.
Ask the owner to identify these paths, then verify them with logs or a controlled test. Notify resource owners before deprovisioning and document dependencies that cannot be exercised safely in production.
Rank excess access by potential impact
Prioritize identities that combine broad scope with high-impact actions. This ranking helps a team reduce the most dangerous exposure first instead of chasing every unused read permission equally.
- Identity and policy control: administrator roles, policy editing, role assignment, service-account impersonation or credential creation.
- Sensitive data: personal, financial, health, proprietary or regulated data, especially across projects or accounts.
- Destructive or deploy actions: delete, overwrite, publish, deploy, disable logging or alter security controls.
- Cross-boundary reach: access spanning environments, business units, subscriptions, projects or cloud accounts.
- Persistent authentication: unmanaged keys, secrets with long lifetimes or credentials stored in developer workstations and build artifacts.
- Unused breadth: wildcard resources, unused services and permissions left from an earlier version of the workload.
AI agents deserve extra scrutiny because their tool choices can chain operations. Require per-tool authorization and a fresh approval for high-impact actions, but still narrow the underlying identity so a prompt injection or tool defect cannot turn one call into unrestricted cloud access.

- Describe the required behavior. List normal inference or agent tasks, scheduled work, deployment, rollback and recovery operations. For each, name the resource, action, environment and expected frequency.
- Create a candidate policy. Replace wildcard actions and resources with the smallest demonstrated set. Narrow resource paths, separate read from write, remove unrelated services and reduce token or session duration where the platform permits it.
- Apply the candidate in a lower environment. Use an equivalent non-production identity or a controlled policy version. Do not test an unverified restriction directly on a live agent.
- Exercise all important paths. Run normal requests, scheduled jobs, deployment, rollback, timeout handling and dependency failure tests. Include every tool the agent is expected to call.
- Observe denials and errors. Correlate authorization failures with workload logs. A denied call can indicate a missing permission, a hidden dependency or an incorrectly scoped resource.
- Promote through test and staging. Repeat the same scenarios with production-like data classifications and network paths. Obtain the workload owner’s approval.
- Roll out to production with a rollback. Keep the previous policy version or an equivalent recovery change available, define an observation period and monitor denials, latency and failed jobs.
- Remove the superseded grant. After the new policy has survived the agreed observation period, delete the obsolete role, statement or scope rather than leaving it dormant.
A policy simulator or access recommendation can help identify candidates, but it does not replace representative workload validation. Keep a clear rollback path and record exactly what changed.
Choose safer authentication and rotate credentials
Prefer managed or federated identities and short-lived tokens over persistent service-account keys when the platform and workload support them. Microsoft guidance places managed identity first, a service principal second and a user account only when those approaches are unavailable. Google guidance likewise recommends avoiding service-account keys when another authentication method works.
When a Google Cloud service-account key is unavoidable
- Create the replacement key.
- Switch the application or deployment system to the new key and verify successful operation.
- Disable the old key.
- Observe the workload and confirm that no legitimate caller still depends on it.
- Delete the old key after that confirmation.
Do not commit keys to source control or leave downloaded key files in shared download folders. Restrict who can create keys and alert on unexpected key creation because a newly minted key can preserve access after a role change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRetire unused identities without breaking a workload
An identity that appears unused may belong to a rare job or a running instance. Microsoft advises checking ownership and dependencies, disabling an account while review is pending when an owner does not respond, and warning the owner before deletion. Google cautions against deleting service accounts used by running instances.

- Confirm the owner, workload inventory and last activity.
- Check scheduled jobs, deployment definitions, instance metadata, secret stores and automation pipelines for references.
- Notify the owner and resource owners of the planned disablement and possible effects.
- Disable sign-in or revoke credentials in a controlled stage; observe for unexpected failures.
- Remove obsolete role assignments, consent grants and trust relationships.
- Delete the identity only after the defined hold period, owner warning and dependency checks succeed.
For managed service identities, disabling sign-in is not the same as removing the directory identity. Preserve the identity object when provider guidance requires it for resource integrity or later recovery.
Provider-specific review points
| Platform | Evidence and controls to inspect | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| AWS IAM | Role trust policies, identity and resource policies, IAM Access Analyzer policy generation, last-accessed information and CloudTrail events. | Default CloudTrail omits some S3 object and DynamoDB item events. Test proposed restrictions through lower environments before production. |
| Google Cloud IAM | Service-account allow policies, inherited and effective access, Cloud Audit Logs, impersonation, key creation and policy-edit permissions. | A service-account resource policy can omit inherited grants. Project- or folder-level impersonation and key creation can expose the account’s permissions. |
| Microsoft Entra and Azure | Application permissions, OAuth consent grants, Azure role assignments, sign-in patterns, credential duration, owners and recertification records. | Deprovisioning must account for dependencies; disabling managed-identity sign-in is distinct from deleting the directory identity. |
These are control-surface comparisons, not product rankings. Names, screens and feature availability can change with cloud configuration and provider updates, so confirm the current provider documentation before executing a change.
Keep an audit record that another engineer can reproduce
For every reviewed identity, retain the owner, purpose, effective-permission snapshot, evidence window, logging limitations, workload scenarios tested, proposed change, approver, exception and next review date. Link the record to the change request or policy version used for deployment.
Minimum decision checklist
- Is the identity still used, and is the owner reachable?
- Did the review include direct, inherited, resource-level and delegated access?
- Who can impersonate the identity, edit its policy or create its credentials?
- Do logs cover the relevant control-plane and data-plane actions?
- Were rare schedules, recovery and deployment paths checked?
- Were broad actions, resources and scopes narrowed to a demonstrated need?
- Was the change tested in sandbox, test or staging before production?
- Is there a rollback policy and an observation plan?
- Were obsolete keys, grants, consents and trust relationships removed?
- Is the next review date tied to risk and expected change?
Set a continuing review cycle
Reopen the review after a model, tool, resource, owner or provider-configuration change, not only on a calendar date. A high-impact production agent, an identity that can deploy code or an account with sensitive-data access deserves a shorter interval than a read-only development job. AWS recommends continuous monitoring and removal of unused permissions; Microsoft recommends a documented recertification cycle. Neither establishes one universal cadence for every AI service account.
Use change events to trigger a focused review: a new tool, a new data source, a new environment, a changed consent grant, a newly created key or a failed owner recertification. Keep the previous effective-permission snapshot so reviewers can see whether access expanded and why.
Common failure modes and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| The account looks unused, but a monthly job fails after removal. | The evidence window missed a scheduled operation. | Extend the window, inspect schedules and restore the previous policy while testing a narrower one. |
| No access event appears for a data read. | Data-plane logging is disabled or retention is insufficient. | Enable the relevant data-event logs and repeat the observation period. |
| Removing a local role does not reduce effective access. | An inherited, group or resource-policy grant remains. | Recalculate effective access across parent resources, groups and resource policies. |
| The agent can still reach a privileged account. | Impersonation, trust or credential-creation rights were overlooked. | Review who can act as the identity, mint credentials or edit its policy, then remove unnecessary delegation. |
| A narrower policy works in tests but fails in production. | Production has a different resource path, dependency or recovery branch. | Compare environments, exercise deployment and failure paths, and promote the change again with a rollback. |
| Deleting an account breaks a running instance. | The identity was still attached to active infrastructure. | Disable or revoke access first, verify dependencies and follow the provider’s retirement sequence. |
How AI-specific controls fit
Use ordinary cloud IAM to constrain what the workload identity can do, then add controls at the agent layer. Authorize each tool separately, require a new approval for consequential operations such as deleting data or deploying code, and issue short-lived, scoped tokens where possible. These controls limit the blast radius of prompt injection, tool misuse and model errors, but they cannot compensate for an identity that already has unrestricted administrative access.
The practical standard is simple: every permission should have an owner, a purpose, evidence of need, a tested scope and a review date. When any of those is missing, treat the grant as a candidate for staged reduction rather than permanent access.
