To audit an AI assistant’s profile of you, check its saved memories or personalization settings, chat history and activity logs, connected apps, and account privacy controls separately. Deleting a chat may not delete a saved memory, and turning off future activity or model improvement does not necessarily erase information already retained. The exact controls depend on the assistant and whether you use a personal or work/school account.
What to check before deleting anything
First identify the assistant, the account you use with it, and any devices or connected apps that may have supplied information. If the account is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may control access, retention, or exports; personal-account instructions may not apply.
If you want a record, export your data before deleting it. An export is a copy for you, not a request to remove the provider’s copy. Then audit each category separately:
- Saved memories or personalization: facts the assistant may use to tailor later responses.
- Chats and activity: visible conversations, prompts, files, and other recorded activity.
- Connected apps and imported content: information that may remain available from a linked source even after a chat is removed.
- Model-improvement or activity settings: controls that can affect future use or saving, but are distinct from deleting existing data.
- Account-level data and privacy requests: records or personal information not exposed through ordinary settings.
A chat list is not necessarily a complete view of what an account retains or what may inform personalization.

How to audit and remove information by assistant
ChatGPT personal accounts
In ChatGPT, open Settings → Data Controls to review the available controls for data export, model improvement, shared links, and account deletion. Export first if you want a copy. OpenAI says self-service export and deletion are not available in the same way for managed workspaces; workspace users should contact their administrator. OpenAI Data Controls FAQ
Review saved memories separately from chats. OpenAI warns that deleting a conversation does not automatically delete a memory saved from it. Remove the relevant saved memory through memory settings, and delete the conversation that supplied it if you also want that source chat removed. Turning off reference to chat history schedules remembered information from past chats for deletion within 30 days, according to OpenAI’s Memory FAQ.

Turning off Improve the model for everyone controls use of new conversations for model improvement; it does not remove those conversations from chat history. Treat it as a future-use setting, not a deletion control. OpenAI Data Controls FAQ
For account deletion, OpenAI says selected personal data is removed within 30 days, subject to stated legal, security, or other policy exceptions. OpenAI also says data already de-identified and disassociated from an account may not be linkable to that account for deletion. If ChatGPT responses contain inaccurate or unwanted information about you that the settings do not address, use OpenAI’s privacy request portal. OpenAI says it assesses these requests case by case, balancing privacy rights against considerations such as freedom of expression and public interest.
Gemini Apps
Use Gemini Apps Activity to review and delete activity and manage Keep Activity. Google says this activity can include prompts and shared files or media; its privacy information also covers connected app/device information and imported chats. Gemini Apps Activity Help

If Gemini’s memory of past chats contains information you want removed, delete the relevant chats. If the information came from a connected app, disconnect that source as well: Google’s instructions identify both routes because deleting only one may leave the information available through the other. Turning Keep Activity off affects future chats: Google says they will not appear in Activity and will not be used to train Google AI unless you send feedback. Google also says chats may be kept for up to 72 hours for service provision, feedback, and safety. Google describes Gemini Apps Activity auto-delete as 18 months by default, with 3 months, 36 months, or indefinite as alternatives. Google also says activity previously reviewed by human reviewers may be retained for up to three years after account activity is deleted. Microsoft Copilot for individuals
For Copilot used with a personal Microsoft Account, Microsoft’s privacy controls describe deleting individual memories and managing Copilot chat activity history through Microsoft account privacy controls. Follow the current controls on Microsoft’s page; these instructions should not be assumed to apply to work or school Copilot deployments, which may have organization-specific administration. What deletion and opt-outs do—and do not—mean
Keep these actions distinct when deciding what to change:
- Delete a chat or activity item: removes a visible conversation or activity record through that service’s controls, but may not remove a separate saved memory or information available from a connected app.
- Delete a saved memory: removes a personalization item where the service provides that control; it may not delete the conversation or source data that created it.
- Turn off activity or model improvement: changes future saving or use according to that provider’s stated policy. It is not automatically retroactive deletion.
- Delete the account or submit a privacy request: invokes a broader process, subject to the provider’s policy, applicable exceptions, account type, and jurisdiction.
The providers’ published controls do not establish a universal guarantee that every copy is erased immediately or that information already incorporated into model weights can be removed. Rely on the specific provider’s stated commitments rather than treating a setting change as proof of complete erasure.

- Reopen the service’s memory, activity, or privacy panel and confirm the relevant item or setting has changed.
- Check any source conversation, connected app, or imported content that could still expose the same information.
- Ask a neutral question that would reveal whether personalization is still being applied. Treat the answer as a clue, not a full account-data export or proof that provider-held data has been deleted.
- If the information remains visible or is not covered by the available controls, submit a request through the provider’s official privacy channel and identify the information and where it appears.
