Audit AI-generated code as an accountable software change, not as trusted output from a coding assistant. Preserve enough context to trace what was generated, review its design and behavior, inspect dependencies and permissions, run automated security checks, verify the shipped artifact, and require an identified human approver before merge or release. The same secure-development gates used for human-written code still apply; AI assistance adds provenance, prompt-context, and AI-specific threat questions.

What an AI-code supply-chain audit must establish

A useful audit answers five separate questions:

  • What changed? Which source files, tests, infrastructure-as-code, configuration, manifests, and lockfiles were generated or materially edited with AI assistance?
  • Why is the change safe? Does its behavior satisfy requirements, threat assumptions, authentication and authorization rules, data-protection obligations, and secure-coding standards?
  • What does it depend on? Are direct and transitive packages expected, authentic, maintained, securely acquired, and free of known vulnerabilities that the project cannot accept?
  • What will actually ship? Does the tested artifact contain only the reviewed code and approved components, or did the build introduce an unreviewed library, image layer, binary, script, or configuration?
  • Who accepted the remaining risk? Is there a qualified person, independent of the original design where practical, who reviewed the evidence and explicitly approved, rejected, or conditionally accepted the change?

This is not evidence that AI-generated code is inherently less secure than code written by a person. It is evidence that AI-assisted changes should remain observable and pass established software-development and security gates. NIST’s DevSecOps reference model states that AI-generated outputs are reviewed through peer review, security validation, automated testing, and approval workflows. Treat that as a governance requirement for the change, not as a claim that a prompt transcript proves correctness.

Set scope, ownership, and an auditable trail

Identify AI-assisted material

Start with the pull request, commit range, or release candidate under review. Ask the author to identify every file that was generated or materially changed with an AI tool, including code that appears routine:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Application and library source
  • Unit, integration, and security tests
  • Infrastructure-as-code, deployment manifests, and container definitions
  • Build scripts, CI configuration, and package manifests
  • Lockfiles, generated clients, schemas, and migration scripts
  • Documentation that changes operational or security instructions

“Materially changed” should include AI-suggested edits that a developer accepted and then modified. A small human edit can preserve a risky generated assumption, dependency, permission, or secret-handling pattern.

Assign decision rights

Name the change owner, the person responsible for security review, and the person authorized to approve deployment. Record who can defer, reject, or accept residual risk. An AI tool, agent, or generated workflow must not be the sole approver or independently modify production state.

Preserve useful provenance without retaining secrets

Where organizational policy and privacy requirements permit, retain the tool or model identifier, relevant prompt and context, repository revision, generated files, and a record of human edits. Store this information with the change or in an audit system with controlled access. Remove credentials, personal data, proprietary source, and other sensitive material from retained prompts according to the organization’s data-handling rules.

Provenance is context for an audit. It does not establish that output is correct, original, or safe. The source, dependencies, build, and tests still require verification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the code’s security design and behavior

Check requirements and data flows

Read the change against the system’s architecture and security requirements rather than only checking whether it compiles. Trace untrusted input from entry point to storage, processing, and output. Confirm that data is sent only to intended services and that sensitive data is not written to logs, telemetry, error messages, prompts, or temporary files.

  • Authentication: Are identities established before protected operations?
  • Authorization: Is every sensitive action checked against the current user, service identity, tenant, and resource?
  • Input handling: Are type, length, encoding, and allowed-value checks applied before parsing or execution?
  • Output handling: Are HTML, SQL, shell, template, URL, and serialized outputs safely encoded for their destination?
  • Error handling: Do failures avoid leaking secrets, tokens, stack traces, paths, or internal topology?
  • Logging: Are security events sufficient for investigation without recording credentials or unnecessary personal data?
  • Secrets: Are keys obtained from the approved secret-management path rather than embedded in source, tests, images, or generated configuration?
  • Defaults: Do new endpoints, storage buckets, network listeners, debug modes, and administrative functions start in the least-permissive state?

Challenge assumptions and edge cases

AI-generated implementations often look complete while silently assuming a trusted caller, a single tenant, a stable network, or a nonempty result. Make those assumptions explicit and test the opposite: expired credentials, replayed requests, duplicate messages, oversized input, missing fields, concurrent updates, partial failures, clock changes, and unavailable dependencies.

Review security-sensitive algorithms and access-control decisions line by line. Verify that cryptographic libraries are used with their supported modes and that randomness, key storage, certificate validation, and algorithm choices follow the project’s standards. Do not accept comments or function names as proof of behavior; inspect the actual control flow and the tests that exercise it.

Apply threat modeling at the right scope

NIST SP 800-218A (July 2024), an SSDF community profile for generative AI and dual-use foundation-model development, recommends security risk modeling and incorporating relevant AI-model threats. Apply its AI-model and training-data controls when the system actually includes those elements; do not copy them indiscriminately onto an ordinary application that merely used an assistant to write code.

For an AI-enabled system, consider malicious code or unwanted content in inputs and outputs, unauthorized information disclosure, denial of service caused by adversarial prompts, supply-chain attacks, and misconfigured data pipelines. For a conventional application with AI-assisted development, focus on the application’s real attack surface while also checking whether generated code introduced a new parser, network call, privilege, or data path.

Audit dependencies and component integrity

Inspect direct and transitive additions

Compare the base and proposed package manifests and lockfiles. For every added or changed component, record:

  • Exact package name, ecosystem, and version
  • Why the component is needed and which code path uses it
  • Registry or repository identity and the approved acquisition channel
  • Integrity information recorded by the package manager
  • Transitive dependencies and any newly introduced build or runtime tools
  • Known vulnerabilities, affected versions, exploitability in this deployment, and the remediation or risk-acceptance decision
  • Maintenance, support, licensing, and release-signing context required by organizational policy

Do not infer legitimacy from a familiar-looking name. Check the expected namespace, registry, repository, maintainer information, and integrity metadata. A package that solves a tiny task can still expand the trust boundary, execute installation scripts, read environment variables, or introduce a second network client.

Use software composition analysis for known risk

Run software composition analysis (SCA) against manifests and lockfiles, preferably in pull-request and release pipelines. Review findings rather than treating a severity score as an automatic verdict: determine whether the vulnerable function is reachable, whether a fix is available, whether the deployment is affected, and who accepted any remaining exposure. NIST’s open-source guidance recommends automated collection and scanning, vetted component repositories, secure acquisition, and composition analysis.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Inspect supplied binaries and images

Source-level analysis can miss components that enter through a prebuilt binary, container layer, generated artifact, installer, or opaque vendor package. Binary composition analysis supplements source analysis by identifying components in supplied binaries or images and helping verify what the product actually contains. Use it for release candidates and other high-assurance paths where the final contents matter more than the source manifest alone.

Separate vulnerability evidence from provenance evidence

SCA primarily asks whether a known component vulnerability is present. An SBOM or SLSA-related attestation helps answer where release components came from and how they were built. Neither replaces the other. A component can have no currently known vulnerability but still be unapproved or unverifiable; a component with a published vulnerability may be acceptable only after a documented, time-bound risk decision.

Review generated configuration, permissions, and build behavior

Inspect infrastructure and deployment changes

Review every generated change that can alter the environment: identity roles, service accounts, firewall rules, routes, storage policies, container capabilities, orchestration manifests, CI runners, and deployment variables. Compare requested permissions with the exact operations the service performs. Remove broad administrator, wildcard, host-network, public-ingress, and unrestricted egress permissions unless a documented requirement and compensating controls justify them.

The NIST DevSecOps reference model warns about excessive privileges for AI agents and about AI-generated artifacts entering a supply chain without provenance or approval. The UK Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI is voluntary guidance, but its recommendations to assess external components and limit permissions for AI systems are useful review criteria.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for secret and data leakage

Scan source, generated files, test fixtures, logs, container layers, and CI output for credentials and tokens. Check whether prompts, source snippets, stack traces, or model responses are sent to an external service. CISA’s Software Acquisition Guide for Government Enterprise Consumers (July 2024) asks suppliers whether they govern AI-generated code, assess its security impact, and periodically review data leakage from AI code-generation tools. Those are procurement questions, not a universal legal mandate, but they provide a practical supplier-control checklist.

Review the build as an execution boundary

Determine which generated scripts run during dependency installation, compilation, testing, packaging, and deployment. Confirm that builds use pinned or otherwise controlled inputs, isolated credentials, approved network access, and reproducible or attestable steps where required. A harmless-looking helper can execute with CI privileges; review its commands and the files it can modify.

Run automated checks, then perform independent human review

Use a layered check set

Run the project’s normal build, unit tests, integration tests, static security analysis, SCA, secret scanning, and applicable container, infrastructure, and configuration checks. Add tests for authorization boundaries, malformed input, error paths, rate limits, and failure recovery when the change affects them.

Automated findings are evidence for a reviewer, not a security verdict. A clean scan cannot establish correct business authorization, safe data flow, or acceptable provenance. Conversely, a finding may be unreachable or mitigated in the deployment; document that reasoning rather than suppressing it without explanation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Require qualified, independent judgment

NIST SP 800-218A recommends review by a qualified person independent of the design, supported by automated processes. Independence can mean a separate reviewer, security champion, or risk function, with the level matched to impact. Require deeper review for authentication, cryptography, payment or health data, privilege changes, build tooling, and externally reachable services.

Use a review record that can be reconstructed

For each material finding, record the file or component, risk, evidence, decision, owner, due date, and verification method. Distinguish fixed, mitigated, accepted, and false-positive outcomes. Link the approval to the exact commit or artifact digest so a later reader can tell what was reviewed.

Verify the release artifact and preserve evidence

Connect source, build, and delivered artifact

Before release, confirm that the artifact tested and scanned is produced from the approved source revision and build definition. Compare hashes or other immutable identifiers, verify the container or package contents, and ensure that no post-scan step injects files, dependencies, configuration, or credentials. If a release is rebuilt, repeat the checks or use attestations that prove equivalence.

Maintain component provenance

NIST SP 800-218A practice PS.3.2 says: “Collect, safeguard, maintain, and share provenance data for all components of each software release (e.g., in a software bill of materials [SBOM], through Supply-chain Levels for Software Artifacts [SLSA]).” Produce a current SBOM for the release when appropriate, protect it from unauthorized alteration, and make it available to the teams responsible for response and maintenance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Retain an evidence package

The package should contain the approved revision, AI-assistance disclosure and permitted context, review and approval records, test results, security-scan results, dependency decisions, artifact identifier, SBOM or equivalent inventory, and any accepted-risk expiration date. Retention periods should follow the organization’s regulatory, contractual, and incident-response requirements.

Make disposition and follow-up explicit

Choose one of four outcomes

Disposition When to use it Required record
Approve Requirements, security checks, provenance, and release evidence are satisfactory. Named approver, reviewed revision or artifact, and date.
Approve with conditions Residual risk is bounded and a specific post-release action is acceptable. Condition, owner, deadline, monitoring or rollback plan.
Reject or block A material vulnerability, unapproved component, missing evidence, or unsafe permission remains. Finding, remediation criteria, and re-review trigger.
Accept residual risk The authorized risk owner knowingly accepts a documented exposure. Business justification, scope, expiration or reassessment date, and approver.

Prevent unreviewed corrective actions

Generated output should not independently deploy, alter production configuration, or “fix” a finding without review and approval. NIST’s DevSecOps reference model states that corrective actions should not modify software or system state without that control. If an automated agent can open a change, require the same evidence and human gate as any other change.

Reassess after release

Monitor newly disclosed component vulnerabilities, abandoned dependencies, artifact drift, unexpected network behavior, and changes in the AI tool or supplier. Re-run the relevant checks when dependencies, prompts or model versions, build infrastructure, deployment permissions, or exposed interfaces change materially.

Choose controls by the risk question they answer

Control or evidence Primary question Best point in the lifecycle What it cannot prove alone
Peer and security review Does the design and behavior fit requirements and threat context? Before merge; again for high-impact release changes That every dependency or shipped binary is known
Static analysis and tests Do repeatable checks expose defects and regressions? Pull request and continuous integration Correct business intent or absence of novel flaws
SCA and lockfile review Are declared components vulnerable, unexpected, or unapproved? Pull request and release Components hidden in opaque binaries or generated images
Binary or image composition analysis What components are actually in the supplied product? Release candidate and high-assurance delivery Why a component was selected or whether its code is logically safe
SBOM What components and versions make up this release? Release and maintenance That components were built or acquired with trustworthy controls
SLSA-related provenance or build attestation Where did components come from and how were they built? Build and release That the resulting code has no vulnerabilities
AI-assistance record What context and tool produced or influenced the change? Development and audit Correctness, security, or originality of the output

A practical pre-merge and pre-release checklist

Before merge

  • AI-assisted files and the responsible owner are identified.
  • Relevant provenance is retained without exposing secrets or restricted data.
  • Requirements, data flows, authentication, authorization, input handling, logging, and defaults are reviewed.
  • Manifest and lockfile differences, transitive dependencies, integrity data, and known vulnerabilities are examined.
  • Generated permissions, network access, secrets handling, and build scripts are reviewed for least privilege.
  • Build, tests, static analysis, SCA, secret scanning, and applicable configuration checks pass or have documented dispositions.
  • A qualified reviewer independent of the design where practical approves the exact revision.

Before release

  • The release artifact is built from the approved revision and definition.
  • Artifact or image contents are checked, including binary composition where assurance requires it.
  • A current SBOM or equivalent component inventory is generated and protected.
  • Provenance or build-attestation evidence is collected for release components where required.
  • Scan results, approvals, accepted risks, and remediation deadlines are retained.
  • No automated agent can deploy or change production without the established approval gate.

Standards and applicability

NIST SP 800-218A (July 2024) adds generative-AI and dual-use-foundation-model practices to the Secure Software Development Framework. Apply model and training-data practices when those are part of the system; use its provenance, review, and risk-modeling recommendations for AI-assisted software as relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

NIST software supply-chain guidance addresses acquisition, use, and maintenance of third-party software. The associated guidance page was updated November 1, 2024. Related SSDF practices apply to software built in-house or by suppliers.

CISA’s Software Acquisition Guide for Government Enterprise Consumers (July 2024) is written for government enterprise consumers. Its questions about supplier governance of AI-generated code, security-impact assessment, and data-leakage review are useful procurement prompts, not a universal legal requirement.

The UK Code of Practice for the Cyber Security of AI is voluntary guidance. Its audit trails, external-component risk assessment, and testing recommendations should not be presented as binding rules in every jurisdiction.

Bottom line for engineering teams

Make AI-assisted code earn trust through evidence. Trace the change, challenge its security design, inspect every dependency and permission, test automatically, review independently, verify the final artifact, record provenance, and assign a human owner for the decision. That process addresses both ordinary software risks and the additional uncertainty created when code, configuration, or components originate in an AI-assisted workflow.
